Wow, I think we should start a Haribo/gummi support group. I started eating these things like crazy when I was studying for my grad school comp exams, and I ended giving myself four cavities. It was outta control! My dentist bill alone is enough to keep me away from Haribo gummis these days, but I also find that fresh fruit is a nice, sweet, less-damaging form of sugar fix.
PS: If you do indulge, be sure to brush your teeth after every gummi session. They are like sugar bombs! |

Isn't "detox program" really just a euphemism for "crash diet"? And correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't doctors (at least mine) always saying that crash diets lead to yo-yo weight loss/gain patterns and are surefire ways to screw up your metabolism? |

| Weight Loss | Quitting Smoking | Dec 07 2007 18:29 (UTC) |

From one ex-smoker to another, CONGRATULATIONS! Deciding to quit is the first big step. For me it was a very gradual (and, at times, PAINFUL) process, but weaning yourself off of cigarettes really is one of the best things you can possibly do for yourself. The rest of my comment is really just an echo of all the previous posts. I know it's insanely hard, but try not to worry about potential weight gain. As long as you're conscious of the decisions you're making, it's not going to be that bad. I actually lost weight when I quit smoking because I started exercising more. Smoking was, for a long time, my primary means of stress relief, so quitting meant that I had to find some other way to deal with stress (walking to school, running in the evenings, yoga etc). Besides exercise, my other saviors were tea, coffee, smoothies, gum, or anything that I could use to fill the place of cigarettes. Taking a "coffee break" or going on a "smoothie run" rather than sneaking outside for a cigarette break really helped. I eventually realized that what I liked most about cigarettes wasn't so much the smoking itself but the break/stress release that went with it. It's all about the psychology! Good luck! |

| If you're watching sodium, and you have to eat out, the Subway Veggie Delight is better than the cold cut options. Otherwise, yip. Most fast foods are sodium traps! | |||

I usually preach the gospel of Subway. A six-inch turkey breast & ham on wheat = 290 calories. Cheese is only an additional forty (!) - plus Subway usually stocks any number of healthy sides: baked lays/sunchips (mmmmm)/light lemonade/water/yogurt/fruit/etc. Other favorites: Take out from whole foods or sushi joints. Arby's (only when I want to indulge). Oh, and Baja Fresh is also pretty decent, but sometimes a bit heavy (according to the website one grilled veggie burrito = 800 calories - WOW). |

| Mm. My favorite is a bowl of chopped fruit (pineapple, banana, mango, papaya, berries, etc) topped with a few dallops of coolwhip (only 25 calories per tablespoon for the regular kind -- 20 for the sugar free!). So delicious. | |||

| I started running 3-4 times a week in September. I didn't notice much of a weight loss at first (I would fluctuate quite a bit around my normal weight - 130lbs), but just as soon as I made it to around 3 miles per run (the beginning of November), I really started to notice myself slimming down (currently at 126). This is all in the name of running a 5k, by the way, which I highly recommend as a great way to get in shape! | |||
| Foods | Sodium.... Can anyone suggest foods? | Oct 05 2007 20:11 (UTC) |

I think for me the key is to stay away from lots of canned, pre-packaged, or preserved foods. That seems to be where the sodium sneaks into my diet. I generally try to prepare my own meals with fresh fruit and veg so that I can control the level of salt involved. Just last night I put together a quick stir-fry with leftovers and was able to keep myself in check by using a low-sodium soy sauce. Oh yeah, and you can look for the low-sodium products in the grocery store (the aforementioned soy-sauce, V-8, crackers, etc..). It really will make a difference! |
