This happens to me so often. I'm recovering from bulemia so I know exactly how you feel.

Before the binge patterns become more engrained, I suggest limiting the "trigger" foods you keep in the house. For instance, if carbs or sweets are a problem, don't keep them in the house. Once you get out of the habit of bingeing when you feel upset, you can keep them in the house again :). In the meantime, I suggest keeping loads of fruits and veggies in the house, so even if you get the urge to binge, you won't do too much damage.

If a binge takes place, don't try to purge. Drink lots of water and tea to help calm your stomach. Don't beat yourself up over what has taken place. It's not the end of the world. We all face obstacles and this is just a little bump in the road for you.

Also, try to get in the habit of going to the gym again. I go in the morning and it keeps me feeling great all day. However, if you feel like the gym will help you be distracted from bingeing in the evenings, maybe you should go then. Other helpful distractions include: showering, brushing your teeth, phoning/ chatting online with a friend, watching a movie.

I hope this helps you. It's such a frustrating and painful habit to overcome. I've been working on it though, and guess what? It's entirely possible and I've never felt better.

Good luck :).

colorado: There's no such thing as trying too hard. Maybe it's just fluid. Do you weigh yoursdelf everyday?

Also, you're on the petite side, so have less weight to lose than someone say, 5'10'', so things may go more slowly.

So, guys, I apparently gained back four pounds this week. However, my weight tends to fluctuate a lot like this. It's mainly because of the high-volume, low calorie foods I eat (apples, vegetables etc.), which weigh a lot when they're in your system. I think this explains my high starting weight and initial plummet; It was a few pounds above normal to begin with.

So, I have to lose 4.5-5.0 lbs to reach my goal this month. Can I do it? I think so. My plan is to maintain a 1000 calorie a day deficit and daily cardio workouts and weights three times a week. I've only been having 200-500 daily deficits since the start, so by amping things up, the weight will fall off. :)

Good luck everyone!

Recipes Affordable Low Cal Options Feb 04 2009

I agree, lentils you cook yourself are a great idea. Walnuts are also pretty cheap in bulk.

"Smart Pasta" can be found in any supermarket I assume, since it's sold here in this small town Nova Scotia. It is pretty low in calories (about 300 cal per serving), which is about the same as normal pasta. Significantly though, it is high in fiber, which is important for weight loss. Also, it's high in protein, so you'll need to eat less.

Hi skwashie,

Have you tried Catelli "Smart Pasta"? It's affordable, low cal and packed with fiber and protein.

Other affordable options include: lentils (two to three dollars a bag but take a while to cook - great for soups or as a bed for chicken or fish), frozen vegetables (more affordable than fresh obviously, and equally nutritious), and tomato-based pasta sauces (tomato paste even works).

In terms of recipes, pasta's not necessarily bad for you. Try souping up your recipe by adding frozen veggies and chicken to the sauce. Voila! A balanced meal!

Good luck!

Weight Loss Is anyone scared that losing weight will be disappointing/ ruin things? Jan 30 2009

I totally understand what you mean.

I haven't read all of these posts but many people aren't getting the crux of your concern. As I understand it, you're not trying to be the prettiest thing in the world, but are concerned about the impact your improved appearance will have on others.

I speak from personal experience when I say that being very, very pretty can make it harder to meet female friends.

If you're attractive to begin with and losing weight is the only thing holding you back then yes, you need to prepare yourself for a radical shift in the way you're treated by other people.

When meeting new people, they may be intimidated by your attractiveness (men and women). This can have serious psychological effects for someone who is used to being a fail-safe friend, shoulder to cry on, or social butterfly. When people begin to interact with you differently you may start to question yourself on a deeper level based on the reaction your physical appearance is having with others.

Bottom line?

Be sure of yourself before going down that road and make a plan to keep your female friends and put people at ease around you. Self-deprocating humor, for example, shows people you don't take yourself too seriously and can make you appear to be less of a threat.

Good luck!

It could be fluid. Don't weight yourself until next week and keep up the good work.

You should consume have at least 1200 calories a day that you're not working off. Calculate your daily caloric need using this site and journal calories for significant extra activities. The difference between the number of calories you've eaten and the total number you've burned in a day should not be more than 1000 calories - which will result in a two pound a week weight loss.

Also, I find it very mysterious to have gained weight in the midsection, which was never a problem area before. It probably is because I waseating too much soy and not being a proper vegan.

Thanks for the feedback!

I think the problem I was having had a lot to do with never being full and always thinking about when I was going to eat next. I was constantly hungry!

I had been a vegetarian for years and was eager to try veganism but the fatigue and weight gain became too much after a couple of months.

I'm having a similar experience. Once you've fallen off the wagon it's hard not to become trapped in old habits. The main thing is to stay conscious about all of your eating choices and workout regularly. Even if you have a bad day, figure out what went wrong and use the information to help yourself through similar situations in the future. All the best!

I fail to see your point.

I understand that "underweight" is a touchy issue. However, it's easy to become very thin without drastic calorie reduction. A daily deficit of 500-1000 calories can be used to reach any goal.

Furthermore, it is possible for anyone to be healthy at a BMI of 18.5 or lower. A smaller body burns less calories in the run of a day. Thus, calorie needs change. Nutrient requirements also change because they are proportionate to total intake.

No, it doesn't matter. Fiber in fruits and veggies will help you lose weight and feel full. Whatever you prefer, but good luck eating three M&M's.

The main thing is that you get into a habit of healthy eating.  Continue to enjoy healthy foods to stay nourished. In time, you'll no longer be compelled to binge because your body will be functioning normally. Best of luck!
