Foods Clif Bars get an A??? Jun 19 2008

Mint Chocolate Clif Builder bars taste like a Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookie and they are an excellent protein/carb combo - go for it for the occasional meal replacement or snack.

I was going to suggest same...you need a protein/carb combo in every meal!  Eating fruit/veggies or cereal only will just turn to sugar unless you add protein.

Health & Support stupid freaking birthday Feb 04 2008

I enjoyed a birthday last week as well! I ate calzone, drank wine, loved my birthday cake (last bit is in the freezer) and shared a few nice dinners with friends. It was fun while it lasted! I worked out 3 of the last 4 mornings and will do so next two because my weigh in is Wednesday so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a decent weigh in. Even or < .5 would be great! So don't sweat it - remember, that 1.4 lbs is 4900 calories OVER your maintenance...doubt you did that every day.
Foods When you crave for a slice of cake Jan 30 2008

I typically ignore the craving... for about a minute then I give in if it won't go away. My sweet of choice is a vanilla/vanilla cupcake from a little bakery in my neighborhood.  I wish I could say I cut out 1/2 the frosting but, sadly, I eat it ALL and it's delicious!  I'm usually good for 6+ weeks until I start needing one again.

It's that moderation thing that we're all learning, right? To completely forbid any treat at any time makes for a difficult if not unenjoyable existence.

I echo the salad suggestion - it's an easy way to contribute to the gathering while insuring that you have something healthy to eat.
Foods Polenta...what to do with it? Jan 24 2008

A Polenta classic:  creamy polenta with sausage and peppers...

put the polenta in a pot, add chicken stock or veg stock if you prefer and break down till thick and creamy.

Sautee onions in 1 tsp of olive oil or non-stick spray if you prefer.  Add chopped bell peppers (red, yellow, green or orange - whatever you prefer).  Sautee til softened the scoop veggies and sauce over a serving of creamy polenta - classic Italian - YUM!

PS...polenta from scratch is a snap and super cheap - just buy the cornmeal and stock to cook it in for extra flavor.

Weight Loss percent of carbs, fat, and protein Jan 17 2008

I've heard two suggestions for percentages: 50% complex carbs, 30% fat and 20% protein.  For those good carbs consider lentils, whole grain bread, cereal or granola bars, beans and fruits and veggies.  I mention lentils first because the fiber content is super high.

The other split I've heard and am now attempting is 50% lean protein, 25% fat, 25% complex carbs.  I'm finding this one more difficult and am only on day 2 so I can't express how it's making my body feel quite yet.  I'm drinking 1/2 oz water for each lb - that helps flush the fat too.

Finally, my Doctor recommends twice daily Metamucil to really raise fiber intake.  He says it's a sure way to keep the system going efficiently and claims that he wouldn't even have a medical practice if more people got sufficient fiber in their diets.  Good luck!

Though I don't have any personal experience with gout, my father has trouble with it.  When he drinks 4-8 oz of black cherry juice per day his problems go away.  Now, I can't compare his severity to yours but this definitely works for him.  You can find it at bigger grocery stores or health food stores.  Good Luck!

To kick a cold I simmer a quart of chicken stock or vegetable stock along with an entire head of garlic, one chopped onion and a nice handful of cilantro.  Simmer for an hour or more until everything is soft then blend if you are able.  If not, it all goes down nicely because it's very well cooked.  All ingredients help with the detox - you may be a bit stinky but I've found that I feel so much better after eating the whole pot...  you can remove the cilantro before eating if that makes it easier.  Feel Better!

According to www.Nurtritiondata.com, both have 3 grams of fiber per serving but I would imagine that the less processed food would be healthier in the long run.
Health & Support Salt cleanse, has anyone tried it? Nov 01 2007

I tried it while I was doing the "Master Cleanse" or lemonade cleanse.  My gag reflex kicked in about 2/3 in from the salty water but I finished it.  I basically saw it as a very natural laxative rather than a true cleanse.  It definitely washes through the bowels...

My internist says that if everyone took 2 tbs of Metamucil twice per day he wouldn't have any patients.  I am not sure you can get too much - RDA is 25-35 grams for women.

5.5 weeks ago I woke up one morning and decided to make better choices. I am 36 years old and have been overweight my whole life. I don't consider the changes I've made a DIET because these changes must last a lifetime. I found this website by accident but find it very encouraging. People all around the world are logging calories and favorite foods and the occasional rant about life and they are losing weight! So...I've lost 15 lbs so far and have over 100 to go. It's a daunting path but one I am willing to walk in order to be the best me I can be. I now skip the drive thru's and only indulge very rarely in the high fat, high sugar choices that put me where I am now. I eat whole fruits and vegetables and am a huge fan of high fiber choices. This moves the fat OUT. I have not started on an exercise program yet and know that this is a crucial step to my success.

I'm striving to be healthy and to have an hourglass figure I'd love to show off. My goal weight right now is 165 but I don't focus on that. I've lost 10% of the weight I need to and that's darn good for 5 weeks of better eating.

Good luck to you - I've spent a lifetime on various diets, resentful because I couldn't have the fries or pizza or sweet whatever...it was something that shifted within me that finally allowed me to see the better way out of this oversized shell.

Health & Support Good and Bad cholesterol? Oct 31 2007

I agree with Coach K - I too just had an increase in my HDL and was completely surprised as I've cut out my favorite french fries and have been eating so healthy - whole grains and lots of vegetables/fruits...and only olive oil for cooking & dressings...no exercise though.  I've also lost 15 lbs but was told by my Dr that the only way to really increase HDL (good cholesterol) was to exercise.

Congrats to you! It's really exciting to make these better choices and see the results in so many places - waistline, scale, clear skin, increased energy, etc...

I have been at this for 6 weeks now and 1/10 done. My goal is quite a few lbs so I'm VERY proud and so looking foward to the getting rid of the next 10%.

Weight Loss Saving calories. Oct 27 2007

Funny you bring this up - I'm having an extravagant steak dinner tonight with my co-workers and have been saving cals since Wednesday...in that I eat 1700 a day typically but have reduced to 1400-1550 in order to have extra "Rib-eye Steak & fixings" calories. I'll enjoy every bite, eat light again on Saturday and be back to normal by Sunday. I figure with normal water and fiber consumption it won't hurt too much on Monday's weigh-in. I agree with Whipple though - not the best idea to do this regularly.
New Members Anyone Else Consumed With Grades? Oct 06 2007

I too am slightly obsessed with good grades. I don't worry about the grade of each and every food but boy do I want that A at the end of the day! Most days I achieve it but if not remember that it is a day by day process and tomorrow is always another opportunity to treat your body right by making good choices.

Here's a quick bit of advice though - raw veggies really bump up a score - I added sliced raw orange pepper and bounced right up by adding all that good vitamin C and fiber!

I am new too but have learned a few things in the past 2 weeks. Your 'burn meter' is based on your current height & weight - it's what you burn by just existing. So if you weigh less, you burn less in a typical day. If you were to increase your exercise and log it or gain muscle weight, the program would, ideally, adjust for those changes as well.

I watch my grade throughout the day and plan ahead - adding more veggies or protein without empty carbs or fat really helps keeping that 'grade' up!

It takes a deficit of 3500 calories to lose a pound - I'm only counting calories as well and have lost 2.5 lbs in the first week and another pound so far this week. I'm eating healthy foods and limiting my fats to olive oil and the occasional hard cheese for extra flavor. Just stick to the 'good' fats and you'll do well. Good Luck!

You may consider switching to Kosher salt or sea salt - it's less refined than table salt and provides a bigger punch for smaller portions.
Foods Calcium??? Oct 04 2007

I believe women need about 1200 - 1500 mg per day so I doubt your one cup of yogurt is giving you that. There's a good chance, I'm sure, that other foods you're eating contain calcium as well. Check the analysis numbers at the end of the day to see how much you're getting vs how much you need. I always take chewable fiber tabs + calcium (sadly a bit like Tums, but worth it) to increase my insoluble fiber and calcium.
