I think you should be losing weight for the sake of health--not because you think you'll look prettier. It really bothers me how losing weight and getting more pretty has become lumped together..thanks to the socialization in our country.
Plus, you are already gorgeous! |

It makes me sad to see teens eating so little. I'm 18 and I know I'm still growing! Even if it's not vertically, my body is still changing. If I deprive it now I will face major consequences later in life. So I fuel my body for health! I am barely 5'1'', about 107 lbs and I eat 1600-2000 calories everyday. |

Also, 10-12 eggwhites is only about 200 calories, NOT 4-500 calories.

this calculoator does NOT work for people who are small framed. Wait, I'm not even small framed I just have really little wrists! (seeing as I'm barely 5'1'') According to the sitemy ideals are: chest 29.25 waist 20.4 hip 24.8 thigh 15.5 WHAT?! There is no healthy human on this earth with my wrist size and those measurements. Even when I was at my lowest weight (mind you, I was horribly underweight) I had a 21 inch waist! I have a 23 inch waist now and I look good! And 15 inch thighs?! EW! Also, if my chest was that large, I would topple over. |

First, congratulations on taking the time to stop and think about what you are doing to your body and recognizing it as unhealthy. Second, please go see a doctor. Whether it be your regular internist, a counselor, or even a nutritionist--they will be able to give you the help you need. You can find incredible support in these forums..but that is all it is, it isnt medical attention. And that is what you need. I have been through the ringer of eating disorders. I am about your height, and I too weighed about 90 lbs after months of starvation. I was sickly; my skin was dry, my hair was falling out, my nails were brittle, I lost my period (and still haven't gotten it back). It is not healthy to be that thin, period. Soon afte that, I also developed binge eating dissorder--which is basically how I gained all my weight back, just as you seem to have. I know that you feel uncomfortable right now. But please, give it time. In the re- feeding stage you tend to gain an uncomfortable amount of water weight--especially in and around your abdomen. IT WILL REDISTRIBUTE ITSELF. Give it TIME! That is the best medicine for recovering anorexics. I know you probably saw instant results when you lost weight, but recovering takes time. I think you also need to ask yourself if you are actually unhappy with what you look like, and if the answer is yes--then ask yourself why? Is it your body image perception, is it just the number on the scale? Health is more important that anything that scale will tell you. Rather than looking at yourself now as needing to "maintain" or "lose"--look forward to being healthy. Your body needs time and consistency. The jumps between extreme overeating and undereating can have tremendous impacts on your body. Try eating the same amount everyday--say 1600 calories (more if your exercise), give or take a few hundred. I have to leave now, but I wish I could keep writing! If you need to talk, just message me! |

In my opinion, your calorie intake is too low. And a really big indicator that you aren't getting enough nutrients are headaches and loss of concentraiton and cognitive skills. If you are working out that much, you should be consuming more than the minimum daily requirement for men--even to lose weight. My advice would be to go to your doctor or maybe even a nutritionist to work out a weight loss plan. This way you know you are doing what is healthiest for you!

I wouldn't say that carrots have a better 'nutritional profile' than carrots. They are from completely different food groups, thus their profiles can't even be compared! Nuts are like a miracle food. They have good fats that actually improve your health. So, enjoy your nuts! |

| Foods | Cheese will be the death of me! | Oct 16 2007 22:28 (UTC) |

First to clear something up further up in the thread; cheese doesn't have the "essential fats" that you're talking about. there are 3 major types of fat-- Saturated, which is full of hydrogen bonds, and not very good for you. Trans fat which is a man made fat, and very bad for you. And then there is unsaturated fats(mono and poly), 2 hydrogens dropped, which can be really good for you! The "essential fats" are found in things like peanut butter, nuts, olive oil and avocado, soy..which are all full of unsaturated fats! These fats are all extremely wonderful for your body and essential to your diet! Now cheese has a lot of saturated fat, seeing as it is a dairy product. This is why you might see it with such a bad grade here on CC. Diets very high in sat. fat have shown a much higher incidence of coronary heart disease. When I was reading up on the American Heart Association guidelines, I found that they had published, in 2006, that no more than 7% of an adults daily caloric intake should come from saturated fat. But, all in all, EAT YOUR CHEESE! But do so in moderation. when it comes to a healthy lifetyle, there should be no such thing as banned foods. If you love it, then by gosh, enjoy it! Just do it in a healthy way. Maybe only a sprinkle, as opposed to 1/4 cup. Enjoy your cheese! |

Holy moly! There is some intense exercise going on here. this is my daily routine; 35ish minutes elliptical (300-350) 20ish minutes light free weights/calisthenics ( 100?) lots of stretching Total= about 400 Of course, this doesn't include me walking to class everyday, or the occasional monring run I do. I also love to do yoga and go hiking! Anything active, really. I don't know, I guess I try to work out because it feels good and its good for me, I don't really focus on the calories burned. If I did, I would just feel bad about myself--seeing as most other people on this thread seem to burn a tremendous amount of calories!

Here is what you can do with the first recipe; 1 3/4 cups whole wheat flour Also, for extra nutrient boosts you can buy ground or whole flax seeds, wheat germ, or wheat bran and toss some of that in there. Hope I helped.

| Weight Loss | HELP, binge question! | Oct 07 2007 23:40 (UTC) |
2 |
I don't think what you're describing is a binge. What you're describing is more of a social, junk food pig out with your friends. A binge, according to a source I found is defined as; Binge eating is a pattern of disordered eating which consists of episodes of uncontrollable overeating. It is sometimes as a symptom of binge eating disorder. During such binges, a person rapidly consumes an excessive amount of food. Most people who have eating binges try to hide this behavior from others, and often feel ashamed or depressed about their overeating. Eating binges can be followed by so-called compensatory behavior, acts by which the person tries to compensate for the effects of overeating. Examples of such acts are purging (induced vomiting or laxative abuse), fasting, and heavy exercising. And so what if you have a day where you eat some junk food with some friends?! Everybody deserves that day. I would strongly recommend that you not worry about it tomorrow. Move right on past it as if nothing happened. If you restrict too much tomorrow and obsess over what you ate today you might actually end up developing a binge eating disorder. Just eat and exercise as you normally would, and you will be fine. I can promise you that. Take it from someone who has been recovered from binge eating disorder.

| Weight Loss | calories today..was it too much? | Oct 07 2007 23:33 (UTC) |
|
First, NO, you did not eat too many calories. EXPECIALLY if you burned 300 running. Your body was probably telling you it needed fuel, aka calories! Also, I couldn't help but notice that you are a male; meaning you should be consuming no less than 1500 calories a day to function. Add in your lifestyle and your exercise (which you said you did) and you need MUCH more than 1100-1200 calories. Even if your goal is weight loss, you should up your calories. This will help keep your metabolism up and keep your organs happy! Heck, I'm a 5 ft tall girl and I eat close to 2000 just to maintain. I also urge you to use the tools on this site, or possible see your doctor or a nutritionist if you are wanting to get a healthy hold on your life. =], Maggie |

| Weight Loss | How can I stay healthy with my college lifestyle? | Oct 07 2007 21:50 (UTC) |
10 |
What are your stats? Are you trying to maintain your weight..lose weight..gain weight? I too am in college and its actually really difficult to get enough calories without being unhealthy. but here is what I have done to make sure I'm eating enough-- -the snacks in my room are all really healthy, but not necessarily exremely low calorie. Things like low fat plain yogurt, bananas, peanut butter, oatmeal, kashi granola bars/fiber one bars, higher-calorie healthy cereals (like anything made by kashi),almonds etc. - When I have something like an apple--that's inherently low calories--I boost it up with a smear of PB or a slice of low fat cheese. - I EAT BREAKFAST. Even if I have class at 9 am, I get up early enough to eat breakfast. Even if that means only 20 minutes before class--that leaves me plenty of time to pop a bowl of oatmeal in the microwave or pour myself a bowl of cereal. Heck, if you're that rushed grab a banana! Eating breakfast kick starts your metabolism for the day, keeping you full of the energy we need in college! - My last tip: don't be afraid to have a cookie once in a while. Try not to restrict certain foods too much, this can lead to binge eating dissorder. Let yourself have a treat, chances are you deserve it! It's all about moderation. =] Good luck in school! Stay happy and healthy. |

You are not alone in this, revolution3. I have been through the emotional ringer of anorexia, and I know very well the effect it can have on your relationships with loved ones. I know you feel more alone now than ever, but you're not. I was battling anorexia for about a year (just coming to a close here not too long ago..), and it was extremely taxing on my relationship with my boyfriend and my parents. I know this is really hard to hear, but all that anger he was harboring that ended up bubbling over in one big fight is most likely a result of him holding in all of his thoughts as he has been watching you do this to yourself. I know, if he is really wanting to help you he probably shouldn't have approached it this way. Accusation of something like this is a hard thing to hear, and it just spurs defesiveness and upset. But maybe, and I don't know your situation, but just maybe he is really concerned about you and doesn't know any other way to express his fear. I was bale to confess to my boyfriend that I thought I was anorexic, and after a lot of arguing and denial that I needed help outside of him--he convinced me to go to counselor--best tdecision of my life. I couldn't expect him to 'remain on my side' and help me if I wasn't willing to help myself. Denial is a major component of eating dissorders. Which brings me to another point--your loss of your period and extremely low body weight are two huge red flags when it comes to anorexia. As is your refusal to see it. Even if you are certain you aren't anorexic, please see a doctor. The havoc that under eating reeks on your body is incomprehensible. Just having absent periods has drastic effects on your body. Without a period, you bones weaken and your liklihood of developing ostheporosis increases ten-fold. It can even lead to the overgrowth of the uterine lining, or endometrial hyperplasia, which can be a precursor to uterine cancer and other serious reproductive problems. Please help your mind and body by seeking professional help. I am here to talk if you ever need me--just message me. |

I also am in love with starbucks..and any coffee in general. And you're totally right! People don't realize you can actually get a pretty healthy drink there. I mean a tall, nonfat, sugar free vanilla latte is only 90 calories, 0 grams fat, 9 grams of protein and 30% of your DV of calcium! It is all about the choices we make =] |

550 before dinner? If you are getting the minimum of 1200 calories a day, that would leave you with 650 for dinner. That's a lot! I think you aren't eating enough if you at 550, and you mention that that's "before" dinner. How have you normally eaten by the time it's dinner? And you were planning on running? I think you were just hungry because you hadn't had enough to eat. |
