Weight Loss Question for diabetic people Dec 05 2007
02:04 (UTC)
I am not only a type II diabetic but an RN as well. I agree with everyone who said go and see your doc, but if you cannot get in to see him for a couple of weeks, I would suggest making the appt asap and then using your dad's glucometer a few times a day and keep a record of the readings to give to your doc and also make a list of any symptoms you may be having such as night sweats, urinary frequency, becoming shaky/sweaty if you miss a meal, excessive tiredness, headaches, excessive thirst or excessive hunger. Keep a diary of intake, excercise, symptoms, and glucose readings. Mark each entry with a date and time and bring it with you to your doctor's appt, that way if you are diabetic you will not delay treatment. And I have to agree with jenmcc....since begining a diet and excercise program, I am now off all diabetic meds (glucophage & insulin) and my sugars that were 120s fasting before are now between 85-95 all the time, so just because a person is diagnosed with it doesnt mean it cant be treated without meds. Good luck!

Weight Loss 3000+ Cals A Day!! Can This Be Real??? Nov 24 2007
06:12 (UTC)
1

Duke,

You have lost a LOT of weight over the last months as I have seen in some of your other posts, so dont get discouraged. You definitely need to listen to your body and right now it sounds like you are gonna need 3000+/day but as your weight drops that will change. You should notice that you will gradually need fewer calories and that as you build muscle you will burn more even at rest. And like skinny kitty said, always listen to your doc, especially if you are losing faster than 2lb/wk. Keeping your doc in tune with you will help prevent any problems from weight loss and increased activity. I see my doc every 4-6 weeks just to keep her up to date on what/how I am doing, that way if something does go wrong, she knows how to handle it especially after hours when she has no chart in front of her. It is so important,( I have been a nurse for 14 yrs and cant begin to tell you how many times Ive had to call a doc for admission orders at 1 in the morning to have the doc say something like..."what is going on with them? I havent seen this patient in several years. How can I give orders for her?, just have the on call resident take a look at her and I will see her in the morning") I hate to see people get poor care but if you dont keep your doc posted thats what happens. Keep up the good work and keep your head up, we all hit plateaus every now and again but if you stay focused, all of a sudden the scale will just drop, so just keep it up. You are an inspiration to many.

Foods Please don't let Splenda products fool you. Nov 20 2007

Personally, I have been using Splenda since it came out and so has my husband and 15 yr old daughter (I don't keep any sugar in the house). I cook with it, bake with it, put it in coffee or anything else that requires sugar (except peanut brittle- doesn't set properly) and neither my husband or daughter can tell the difference and neither can my parents who swear up and down that they can tell. I am a diabetic and so much as a cup of coffee with 1 teaspoon of sugar can raise my blood sugar 50pts within 30 minutes but the Splenda does not. I am also an RN and the only docs that don't recommend Splenda to their patients are the old school docs who are getting ready to retire and I have yet to meet anyone with those types of complaints. Now I had similar symptoms up until about a month ago and we always thought it was my diabetes meds, but turns out I have celiac disease and within 3 days of eliminating gluten all symptoms disappeared completely. Now I wouldn't recommend certain sweeteners like xylitol or mannitol as they are low doses of laxatives and most of your sugar free candies are sweetened with them and they will cause diarrhea and cramping but as for your case, I think you are probably looking at more of a hypersensitivity than just mere side effects.

I have the new version of the traditional cookbook by betty crocker and i love it, it gives you all the nutritional breakdown for each recipe and it also gives some substitutions like yogurt for the fats in a recipe and covers everything appetizers-soup-salad-meat-vegetables-sides-t o desert. It can be found almost anywhere.
Motivation I need to lose 70-80 lbs. ~ Anyone else?? Nov 14 2007

Here's my update: I started at 232.7 on 9/24/07 with 102 lbs to lose. I have worked out faithfully 6 days a week with the only exception being from 11/3-11/11 because I had surgery on my left hand, but follow my caloric intake closely. I met my 1st goal of 10% of total body weight lost a few days ago. today, I weighed 207.2 which is 25.5 lbs lost and 25% of the way to my ultimate goal of 130 lbs. My next mini goal is to reach 188 pounds by 1/21/08. As of today, I have 77.2 pounds to go. My husband bought me new jeans, size 14(size I wore before we got married) for my birthday and I can now get in them, not comfortably yet, but I can now get them on and zipped. When he bought them I couldnt get them past my knees so I figure 10 more pounds and I should be able to wear them and I cant wait for that!!!

After looking at their website, i think the only people that should go there are those who need to come up with extra calories. Its good to know though, especially on the days that I cant seem to figure out how to get those last 200 calories in, now I have a solution without excess fat intake.
Weight Loss How many calories in home made meals? Nov 13 2007
18:01 (UTC)

Heres what I am getting:

Chicken breast:284 calories/6.2g fat

Roasted Potatoes:143 calories/2g fat (4 ounces)

Sweetcorn:168 calories/1g fat

Carrot:16 calories/0.1g fat

Suet pudding:188 calories/10g fat (2 ounces)

Gravy:112 calories/4g fat (1 ounce)

Given these portion sizes, this meal would be 911 calories & 23.3 fat grams. Another way to find out the calories in a home cooked meal is to use the New Recipe link on here. I use it almost every day 'cause I make a full home cooked meal for my family daily and also because I am a celiac so I have to build my menus myself.

Weight Loss Help please I am new here Nov 13 2007

There are 28.35 grams per ounce

1 tablespoon=1/2 ounce or 14.18 grams

1 teaspoon=1/6 ounce or 1/3 tablespoon or 4.75 grams

1 cup= 8ounces or 226.8 grams

Hope this helps. If not, try a digital scale that has both ounce and grams. The one I have is made by Good Cook. I dont know where you are, but I bought mine at Meijer a couple of weeks ago for about $30 to replace the one my husband melted on me. I know Walmart carries that brand too cause thats where I got my 1st one.

Weight Loss Do you still absorb the calories if they pass through quickly Nov 09 2007
19:34 (UTC)
8
Im not too sure if the calories are absorbed or not, but I can tell you that our bodies quite simply put, do not digest the skin of the corn. Most people see the corn when they go to the bathroom whether its loose or formed. As far as having the runs within an hour of eating, regardless of how much you ate, can be an indication of bigger problems. I had that problem everytime I ate for over 3 years and associated it with the Glucophage they had me on for my diabetes and never thought twice when they changed my meds but I was still running EVERY time I ate. I was passing absolutely undigested food only to find out not long ago that it is celiac disease, which is an autoimmune disease that is triggered by gluten. After they tested me I started playing with my diet and realized that it only happened when I ate gluten containing foods such as bread, pasta, or anything that contains flour. Now I am on a gluten free diet and within 2 days of switching I started noticing the difference and now I am pretty much back to normal, something I havent seen since 2004. My point is, it can be a food intolerance or allergy or it can be an indicator of something much worse like an autoimmune disorder like celiac or chrohns but I really think you should discuss it with your doctor.
Weight Loss Artificial Sweeteners, Splenda Nov 09 2007
15:38 (UTC)
19
I have been using splenda since it came out. It is a byproduct of sugar which is a result of processing cane sugar into table sugar. I am a type 2 diabetic, I was diagnosed a couple of years ago and was put on Metformin 2X/day then advanced to insulin when I got pregnant and after I lost the baby, my obstetrician wanted me to stay on it for tighter control in case i conceived again but now that I am losing weight, excercizing and using strictly splenda...no sugar whatsoever, I am off of everything. I still monitor my blood sugar 4X/day but I am not taking anything and my sugars are in the normal ranges and I havent really had to give up anything....I just traded sugar for splenda and you really cant tell the difference. My mom who swears she cant stand any artificial sweetener, doesnt even know the difference when she comes to our house. Besides, hospitals have even replaced equal and sweet'n'low with splenda on the trays of all their diabetic patients and being a nurse, I havent met a patient yet who prefers the "blue" or "pink" over the "yellow" one. And its no calorie just like the others, only tastes better.
Weight Loss Embarrassed, but need some advice about #2.... Nov 09 2007
15:19 (UTC)
2

Ive been a nurse for a long time and deal with a lot of constipation issues with my patients, though mostly due to their medication regimen and warm prune juice before bed tends to work wonders in the morning and then if you have a cup of coffee (or some espresso would work too).

Lately, I feel your pain too, after 3 years of nonstop diarrhea every time I ate, we found out that my problem was celiac disease and now that I went gluten free, I have the absolute opposite....now I only go once a week and my doctor says the diet change is just a shock to my body and that I should take a laxative every time I go 3 days without going (medical standard)but I beg to differ. I eat a salad made with romaine lettuce almost every day in addition to green vegetables and fruits and lots of water and do as much walking as you can after meals and that will help move things along too(im on crutches and this still helps) Most importantly, dont get discouraged, if one thing doesnt work, try another until you find the thing that works best for your system.

Weight Loss November-May Weight Loss Challenge ? Count Down Till Weigh In #14: 2 Days!!! Nov 07 2007
14:41 (UTC)

I didnt have too good of a start for the week, either. Only difference is I am way down on calories. I had surgery on my left hand on monday then they gave me saltine crackers (I am gluten intolerant) with the vicodin they gave me after IV anesthesia and pain meds before they sent me home so then I was pretty nauseous afterwards so I only managed to get around 400 cals that day, and yesterday I only got in a little over 500, not for lack of trying, but not realizing how difficult it was going to be to prepare foods with only 1 hand, not to mention, I havent been to the gym since friday....was going to go sunday and monday before surgery but the doc told me no on saturday because of the increased blood flow and then i was going to go back yesterday but the discharging nurse said i have to wait til my follow up....thank God, thats today.....I feel out of sorts from not going to the gym.....cant wait to get at least back to the gym, i can handle nonuse of left arm but i can still do my cardio, legs and right arm.....5 days out of the gym....im afraid if i dont get back to it soon, i am going to fall too far back and get discouraged.

PS...do i get to take into account the weight of the cast they put on my arm for weigh ins?
