| Fitness | I hate running, but... | Apr 07 2009 19:06 (UTC) |
9 |
I hated running when I first started... now I love it. I was a gymnast for 18 years, and running is commonly used as a "punishment" for other sports. That and distance running uses completely different muscles than gymnastics. (Gymnastics = fast twitch, Running = slow twitch). I took up running to lose weight 2 years after my retirement, and I never thought I would continue with it and eventually run in races. So, there is hope. :) |

| Fitness | Stress fracture vs. Shin splints | Apr 01 2009 19:29 (UTC) |
|
Thanks for the replies everyone. I've also had two stress fractures in one foot as well as one in my hand once... so... It feels more like a stress fracture than shin splints, but I'm no doctor (although we gymnasts tend to believe we're better doctors than the real ones!). I've also had some swelling in the area... mostly around that part of the leg and below. Sometimes it will be swollen and I'll be able to press on my leg with my finger and an indent will form and stay for a minute or so. Is there any correlation between the pain and the swelling, do you think? I first noticed the swelling way back around July, but there was no pain in the leg at that time -- at least that I had noticed when pressing on it, and certainly not while running. It's weird. I hate going to the doctor, especially if there definitely is something wrong, because I'm not good at.. following doctor's orders, I guess you could say. Growing up in a tough gymnastics environment, we were taught to work through pain, and it's kind of a habit now! |

| The Lounge | Getting one Wisdom Tooth removed tomorrow. Super nervous. | Mar 31 2009 03:49 (UTC) |

Last year about this time, I had one wisdom tooth removed. The next 4 days were awful. Mind you, my tooth had been infected and I was on antibiotics for a week before the surgery because they will not remove an infected tooth. 5 months later, I had the other 3 removed, and healed MUCH quicker than I did with just the one tooth removed! I was confused with that, but also OK with it :) |

Ahhh, my fruits and veggies!!! I love my grapes and strawberries, mixed together in a little bowl. When I get close to the end, I add a little low-calorie Reddi Whip as a little treat. Sometimes I like to add sliced banana into my little bowl also... and even pineapple chunks. I also like my grapes frozen! I love oranges plain. Watermelon on hot summer days is a tasty treat! Veggies... our family has this thing of spreading this Kraft Old English cheese into celery, it's delicious! People think it's weird, but I love it... and it's been a favorite in my family forever. (I, however, find the celery and PB combo to be a little strange, and didn't care for it at all when I tried it). I also love my carrots, cucumbers, and broccoli (except lately it has been giving me crazy belly aches. This happened to my dad years ago, and it seems as though he's beginning to outgrow it, so there's hope for me too!). As far as cooked vegetables, I love a good heaping of corn - or in the summer, corn on the cob. I love green beans and cauliflower steamed to perfection. :) |

Me too :( Although, I'm near the end of it. I've been sick since last Wednesday... kept me out of the gym Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. I'm training for a half marathon, so it's been hard for me to miss my runs, but I knew I needed to rest if I want to be able to train my best. Friday and Saturday I spent my entire day in bed... no fun! |

| Fitness | Sweating more??? | Feb 19 2009 14:22 (UTC) |

I don't think it's so much that you're sweating more during the cooldown/stretches, it's more that's sweat's "job". Sweat is your body's way of cooling itself down. The same thing happens to me... while I'm running, I definitely sweat a lot. But when I'm finished and doing my cooldown walk, I'm absolutely dripping. |

Eek, I have not weighed in the last two weeks. Oopsies. I did realllllllllly good the last couple weeks and got down to 108.5... then over the weekend developed a bit of a sweet tooth and became a little bit lazy :-/ Good thing is... next week I begin my half-marathon training program, and I am MUCH more dedicated when I'm in a training program. So, as of Sunday, I won't be allowing sweets, junkie foods, etc... so hopefully I'll get back down to where I want to be. I'm setting my goal date for the date of my half-marathon (May 17th), which gives me plenty of accomplish it. |

I'm opposite of you. I run so much easier when I am outside rather than on a treadmill. I hate winter for this reason -- I have to run on the darn treadmill. It takes quite a bit of motivation for me to get going on the treadmill, especially for my long runs. When I'm running on the treadmill, I get bored very easily. I don't like being stationary and seeing the same thing the entire time. Outside, the scenery changes. I wish I had the lungs to be able to do my running outside in the winter... |

| Fitness | anyone have a nike plus? | Jan 30 2009 18:50 (UTC) |
|
Have you calibrated your sensor? If it's available to you, the best place to calibrate your sensor is at a track. When I first got mine, I went for a run before calibrating my sensor (for kicks, I wanted to see how it worked, etc) and it initially told me I was running a 6:15 mile... which I knew was NOT possible for me! Once I calibrated it, it gave me a correct and more accurate reading. I've been using Nike+ for almost 2 years now and I've never had any major problems with my calibrations... I'm already on my 3rd sensor, however. :) |

| Weight Loss | your weight in HIGHSCHOOL | Jan 30 2009 13:26 (UTC) |

I am 5'2" and weighed about 120lbs. in high school. After competing 3 years of college gymnastics and battling eating disorder issues, I gained weight -- because, contrary to popular belief, gymnasts actually do like to eat! I weighed in about 140lbs when I started to lose weight, although my highest was probably closer to 150. I currently am 108-110 lbs. |

| Fitness | Problem with my Nike+ Ipod | Jan 30 2009 13:22 (UTC) |

Mine will do this too -- the graph thing. It doesn't bother me. Occasionally during a run the sensor may lose its touch for a few seconds, therefore appearing to slow your pace. Sometimes, mine will tell me I'm running a 20 minute pace, which obviously, is not true. I'll push the button again and the pace will be back to normal. If it's not affecting your overall average pace, I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's not going to be spot on perfect every single time. |
|||
| Fitness | What's your mph average for longer runs? | Jan 29 2009 19:09 (UTC) |
3 |
I try to keep my pace for shorter runs (2-3 miles) between 8-8:30... my pace for longer runs is typically between 8:30-9:00, occasionally slowing to 9:15ish. I am also training for a half marathon and my goal is to finish in 1:45. That was my goal last year and I barely missed it, finishing at 1:47:13... which was an average pace of 8:12. The more I push myself to run faster on my shorter runs, the more it builds my endurance and it eventually reflects in my longer runs. |

| Fitness | Half Marathon | Jan 05 2009 15:23 (UTC) |

I follow programs from halhigdon.com. Although you can run 7.5 miles, I would recommend using the novice program for your first half marathon, just since you've never run one before. I was running 5-6 miles a day and I ran my first half last May and used the novice program, and I was very prepared for the race. I used the novice because a) I had never run a half marathon before, and b) I did not want to overdo it when training for my first half. The novice program is designed for runners who haven't run a half marathon before, but can consistently run 3-4 miles a few times a week. This year, I'm going to use the intermediate program. I also run slower on the treadmill... I'm not sure why that is, either..! I also get bored on the treadmill after quite ahile -- running outside gives me various scenery and there are different things happening every day. I see the same people and the same TV shows when I'm on the treadmill... |

Same with me! The old armband for the old generation ipod did not do this... I wish they would make a duplicate armband for the 4th generation armband. Sweat didn't seep through, and it was much easier to operate the click wheel. As for advice, I have none... but would like some as well :) |
