Weight Loss To Weigh Or Not To Weigh Nov 28 2009

I weigh myself everyday at the same time under the same conditions. It's the only way to check if you're on track with the weight loss.

Any fast food salad..(McDonald's, Wendy's,etc). Panera is not real "fast food" but you can get a healthy lunch quick. I agree with above that Subway or Quiznos are places you have complete control of what goes in the sandwich therefore can make it very healthy with wheat bread. I have found in western NY that the grocery chain, Wegmans, has a great fresh food are and deli where you can pick/create a very healthy meal cheap.

When I travel and use various hotel treadmills some HRM are OK and some are way off. Take your own pulse manually a few times to get an estimate what your rate is at different intervals. Once you know that you'll know if the machine is close to accurate. Good to have some idea for various workout levels, inclines, etc.

When I started getting serious about weight loss I carefully measured everything I ate. I was blown away how much more I was eating after being careful and honest. 3000+ calories per day!!!  I would guess the vast majority of those who say they can't lose even when trying to watch calories are not measuring accurately. Once I was more exact I became much more healthy and combined with exercise the weight came off easily.

There are many wacky posts here.

  1. How would you like to envision yourself and your life in 10 years?
  2. If you were that person right now what would you be doing?
  3. What can you do today to incorporate the characteristics and life-circumstances of the man or woman you want to be in 10 years?

Please feel free to post as many times as you want.  I'm interested in what others have to say.  Thanks!

1. I'm 56yo now. At 66 I hope I'm the exact same person and still working full time. I plan on working well into my 70's for the enjoyment and of course to make money!!

2. Same thing obviously.

3. Nothing different.

Portion control!

Last years' Thankgiving was my first after losing weight. I sat down in the morning and planned what I was to eat. This was easy because we host the big meal so I knew what was being served. I played with the amounts of each selection...and I had all the "good" stuff like stuffing, potatoes, etc BUT was careful to know in advance what my portions would be.  It worked. That night I felt great that I was able to control yet enjoy like everyone else.

I always struggled with an exercise plan. Over a year ago I decided to just "walk" so it is easy to do any where any time and I can do it until I die.

I really got into it and have walked virtually ever day since only missing 13 days in over a year. I walk 3 miles a day and quite fast. I guess it classifies as "power walking" because I do 4.5 miles an hour. On weekends I sometimes do 1 1/2 hours which is 6 miles. My longest was a 9 mile walk in Florida while on vacation.

I average 40 mins a day and add that to a complete lifestyle change I have lost 50lbs, brought my BP and Cholesterol down, lost 7" off my waist.

BTW---I crank Rock and Heavy Metal music to help me get into the walking.

Don't do it...you'll regret it. I disagree with those saying "make it up tomorrow" because that kind of thinking will eventually get you to totally fail at your goals. A little here...and a little there....will cause failure.

I lost 50lbs last year by exercising and eating right...changed my whole lifestyle at 56 yo. I wouldn't say I'm "happier" but definitely more confident and proud with the accomplishment. I realized at 56 I was heading down a road that would have led to serious health issues and started to look like the "old guys" I never wanted to be. Not a problem with age but I didn't want to be the old fat grandpa who doesn't do much more than complain and drink.

The process of changing my lifestyle expanded to include every aspect of my life.....I bought all new clothes and work at dressing properly even when around the house. No more old dirty shorts and t-shirts because no one is around. Its for my self esteem. Changed my hairstyle dramatically.  Plus many other aspects of my life I changed gave me a whole new positive outlook on life. I am enjoying my grandson and my other daughter has #2 on the way. As they grow I want to run outside with them, play ball, and just be an active part of their life. I also want to spend time with my wife traveling, etc. So the goal was to shape up for "Part 2" of my life and it worked.

Follow the CC food logs and read alot because it works and keeps one motivated. I lost 50lbs in a little over a year. Now I find it easy to exercise and eat right without a care. Also be patient....regardless of what you hear it takes time.

Weight Loss What's your diet secret? Nov 12 2009

Others have said it...

1. Write down...with real honesty and accuracy...your intake. Using CC works. I was shocked how much I was eating when I thought I was eating properly.

2. Exercise. As much as you can BUT it doesn't have to be hard. I have always struggled with running and weights...more than a year ago I started daily walking and keep it up, 2-3 miles a day rarely taking a day off.

3. Eat healthy foods. No cheating.

4. This is the hard one....give up alcohol. Even an occasional glass of wine adds a ton of calories. If your drinking 2 or more a day thats a ton of calories you don't need. Plus it gives you the munchies.

Weight Loss Sodium Levels Before Weigh-in Nov 12 2009

My experiences are not scientific but I've noticed more weight a day or two after high sodium intake. I keep my weight +/-  190lbs consistently for months. I weight myself at the exact same time/same scale/ same condition after breakfast each day.  When I hit 192 or higher its always after an increase in high sodium foods outside my normal diet. So I'm a believer that it matters but to determine how much sodium causes how much t=retention would be a wild guess.

When I started I wanted something simple I could do into my 80's. So I walk(power walk) every single day usually between 2-3 miles. On the weekends I sometimes do up to 6 miles. I also do crunches, pushups, leg lifts, etc. Been doing that routine for over a year. I missed walking only 13 days last year.

BTW---Everyone thinks I'm a freak but I don't care because I'm in great shape, lost 50lbs, and my BP and Cholesterol came way down.

Sounds like the "book" reward is the right thing to do. Too many times I read people here giving themselves a "food" reward of something off their plan or they build in "days off" the lifestayle change where they eat unhealthy food. Why plan to eat something that is against a diet? Never understood that.

Reward yourself with non-food. Great idea.

What is with men?  The first time I ran 5k outside I was so excited I called my mom and told her.  Her boyfriends response was "that's not a jog, that's a walk!".  My mom tried to hush him but the damage was already done.

..............

It's not only men!  I've been on a plan for two years and have done quite well(lost 50lbs, totally changed my lifestyle and eat very healthy, exercise daily and at 56 never been healthier) but I have some female relatives that make fun of my efforts, think I'm wacked, and try to convince me to eat unhealthy stuff when were out. Its amazing how many people react to someone getting healthy and cleaning up their act like me. I always fire back when they try to get me to have a dessert I don't want or food I don't want. I ask them..."would you offer a drink to a recovering alcoholic?" They don't realize this is not a game but at 56 if I didn't do something I surely would be in declining health. My BP and cholesterol came down, my doc says I am healthy and should keep doing what I'm doing.

So ignore the husband but try to educate him why its important to you.

Sounds like you're in good shape.

On pushups---I started 2 years ago struggling to do 5 a day. I worked at it and slowely added one every few weeks. Now I do 25...take a break then do an additional 10. I feel this has been my biggest physical achievement. I walk each day between 3-4 miles and eat right. Lost 50lbs and feel great. Just have to accept that it takes a long time.

Another suggestion.....weigh yourself the same time, on the same scale, in the same condition each day for accurate tracking. My weight goes up through the day and I am always 3lbs heavier in the afternoon. Plus weigh at the same time like before or after breakfast because that food in you will make a difference. Last weigh under the same conditions (naked or clothed) because your clotes can be a few pounds. Reproducibility is key.

Young Calorie Counters Giving Up Soda Oct 24 2009

I gave up soda more than a year ago. I was drinking 3-6 cans a day for my entire life(55yo now). I'm glad I did and after a month it was easy. With that success I went on to stop coffee and switch to green tea. Now I have reduced alcohol to barely a glass of wine a month. I only drink water, natural fruit juices, and brewed tea. No reason it just became habit. I'm not trying to "all natural" or anything like that. The benefits have been wonderful....less jittery...less bloated....and a lot less garbage from empty cans, etc. Plus I saved a few bucks.
