Three words: Tesco Value Range

I buy loads of their products and they are absolutely FINE!

Some eg's: Value noodles 9p (ditch the flavour sachet and  use them as the noodles with a stirfry)
Value Yogurt 6p
Value bread 40p
Value Oats 55p
Value eggs (15) £1.45 or (6) 88p
value orange juice 56p
Value Peanut butter 69p

Those are just a few examples off the top of my head.  The range covers pretty much every basic product you can imagine. If you want to get an idea of what you could buy register for their online grocery site and type in 'tesco value' into the search box.  You wil see all the products.  (good to get an idea of what you want before you go to the shop because often the value range products are tucked away and you have to play store detective and hunt them out).I totally think you wlll be fine on £10 for a week with 2 people, but you will have to shop smart and it won't be a gourmet week by any stretch.

You mention you have a bag of lentils.  Lentils are so unbelievably filling. One of my fave things to do with them is making up a sausauge/lentil/potato/other vege casserole.  Yum!

Hope you finances pick up soon :)

Most people experience stress at work, some more than others, but unless your boss is forcing food into your mouth she's definitely not making you fat.

The only cranberry sauce we have here in the UK is the one you get in a little glass jasr by Ocean Spray.  It's not really a jelly though.  Is that different to what you guys are talking about?!?!

Well it is the standout part of the OP's post!

Don't know if you like kids but if you do think about being a nanny. With your degrees you would get paid pretty well. I have been working as a nanny for 6 years and love it.

Actually I have thought about that... All the really awesome nanny jobs tend to be in London for posh schmancy-fancy families.  It's something I'll explore a bit further if I do get more desperate!  Luckily I have a wonderful BF who is happy to support me while I look for a job, so I do have the luxury of not having to worry about rent etc.  Phew.

Eh not necessarily. I knew I'd need more than a BS in psych to do anything and had always planned to get my PhD in Social Psych. Things just change. However, I'm not sure my upcoming MA in International Peace and Security will do a WHOLE lot either. haha

Come over to Europe and get a job with the UN. Smile

I've got my fingers crossed on a paid internship with Human Rights Watch when I graduate. However, there's only one spot open so I'm not going to hold my breath.

One of my friends from high school who is doing her Masters in International Relations is currently in Geneva doing some placement thing.  It does happen!

Heh.  I do think performance arts are a possibility if you're the cream of the crop.  I have a friend who is an opera singer that is doing some sort of internship or apprenticeship or whatever-they-call-it with the Metropolitan Opera.  So, she's made it work.  If one's talent warrants it, then by all means pursue it and be prepared for tough competition.  If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

However, if you're just average (e.g., my piano playing, at best...violin playing, not even close! :D), fuhgetaboutit.  I suppose it's about developing multiple interests.  I love music, but I realized long ago that it wasn't going to pay the bills.  Pursued other things that I liked as much and made a career out of it.

That's absolutely brilliant! I guess one of the things standing in the way of me getting a proper grown up career is because I'm still doing singing on the side, with the aim of getting into a postgrad course over here at Royal College/Royal Academy/Guildhall/somewhere similar, hopefully within the next 2 years.  Because that takes up A LOT of time, I really don't want to commit myself to working 40 or 50 hours of corporate bullsh*t.

And anyway, our Times is way older than your Times Tongue out

Heh.  If you switch from an arty bachelor's to something actually worthwhile for grad school in the US, it indicates that you basically realized later than most that you can't make any money in the humanities (the word "sucker" comes to mind). :D

Yeah well unfortunately no-one told me that when I was 18 did they?  I freaking wish they had.

What did they tell you, then?

Well we had NO careers advice, and just got told to do what we enjoy.  Pfft.  My baby sister is just about to start University in February and I'm gonna make sure she doesn't end up making the same mistakes as me!

And further to your comment about suing universities: Article from The Times

Ali: Your friend sounds absolutely amazing!

I am totally willing to be flexible in terms of where I live, but my partner is less keen on moving.  If I manage to find a job in London we will be forced to move closer though (at the moment am 50 min train ride from central London).

I'm also facing the uphill battle in that im on a 2 year visa and I DEFINITELY think it makes prospective employers think twice about hiring me.  Sigh.

Possibly the 2 most pointless degrees on the face of the earth:

Bachelor of Music with Honours (Voice Performance)

Bachelor of Arts (German)

Psst...you're supposed to go to grad school when you study the humanities, silly.

Lol, I'm not in the US.  We don't have a culture of doing an arts degree as undergrad and then going on to do grad in what you actually want to do.  I think that's what people tend to do in the States?  In NZ where I'm from it is fairly common to do 2 undergrad degrees.

Yeah wish I'd had someone tell me that about 5 years ago. Sigh.

What kind of job have you been looking for? Music jobs such as teaching are in very low demand because many public schools are cutting their music departments due to budget cuts.

German is a different story. I'm not sure how qualified you have to be, but have you thought of being a German translator? My friend is studying Chinese in school in hopes to become a Chinese translator. They are actually paid pretty well for just listening and translating.

You could also look into German teaching jobs.

Well I'd like to find a job to do with music, although not necessarily teaching.  I'm looking for jobs already.  No point wallowing... but I so wanna stuff my face with chocolate right now.  Reaaallly trying hard not to. :(

What reasoning did they give you for firing you?  I mean, whether you have 2 degrees or not - if you're swearing at customers or throwing food at your boss you're more than likely to get fired ;)

HAHAHA I WISH!!!

It had a 4 month probation period and the managers would pass/fail you after each month.  Obviously if you get a fail then you're outta there.  This was my last pass/fail.  Official reason for not passing this month was that I was not meeting targets.  Ummmm.... Hello, I was meeting them all the other months... so no idea really what their reasoning was. I'm just majorly p****d because I felt like I lowered myself to do the job then have to suffer the ignominy of being fired.

The worst part?  The job was a **** telemarketing job. UH-HUH.  I lowered my standards THAT much.

I am just SO p****d right now.

Weight Loss How is this possible? Oct 10 2009
20:02 (UTC)

If you have a cold your system is all gunked up with mucus and things anyway, and it needs to retain water in order to keep producing all that mucus!

The sodium could also be adding to the problem.

Don't stress until you are well again.  I bet you have lost weight ... just don't be surprised if you put it back on again after a couple of days of eating regular again.

are your mushrooms dried mushrooms by any chance?  If so, then they could be high calorie because the water has been removed.  If raw, mushrooms are about 15 cal per 100 g.  Preeeetttty low calorie in my book!

You see I don't want to end up on Wikipedia for bodging the job....  has to leave me well under the radar.

I did read a (fictional) story once where the wife blatted the husband over the head with a frozen leg of lamb, unwrapped it, popped it in the oven and then returned home a few hours later to be 'upset' at the tragic discovery.  As the police are making their inquires and looking for the blunt instrument she's serving up the murder weapon with mint sauce and peas!

Love that story! We read it at high school as part of a short story class.

Weight Loss Does flavored water count for your daily water intake? Aug 01 2009
18:11 (UTC)

Even drinks with caffeine count toward your daily fluid intake.  I think people confuse fluid intake with water intake.  Your daily fluid intake is the recommended 8 cups per day, but that can come from anything - water, tea, coffee, fruit juice, soda, milk...

Ideally, you want to drink more water than other beverages, but all fluids count toward your daily intake.
