Greetings from Hawaii!

Okay, so between the back tweak and vacation, I'm not exercising as much as I like.. but there's a personal trainer waiting to kick my ass as of Wednesday, so I'll live.

Im still doing well with the diet - lots of fruit to eat here, fish and salads. I think I can keep it around 1700 and not screw myself with the crunchy and the fried...

Oooh...get some sun for me.  It's been raining ever since school let out, grr!!!

I'm sure you'll be fine, and also allow yourself to taste the local delicious food.

Good morning everybody!

I'm still at 124, but I took it light yesterday.  It's summertime, and I have to stay away from the ice cream.  I found a new favorite, which is not good, lol.

I will break this plateau! lol

Have a great day, everybody!

Lynn~

Love the new picture! and I love your advice to marmel ("next time just fall.")  I don't seem to have a problem with falling.  I have more of a problem with walking, lol.

Speaking of walking, (nice segue, huh?) I walked a mile today.  I have a 4 mile route that I started doing, but my knee spasmed on the last leg, so I got new shoes and took it easy this week.  So it's a light week for exercise, but I am watching very carefully what I eat.  I would love to get off this dang plateau, lol.

Marmel~

You need to take it easy there, as if you didn't know that.  And like someone else here asked, what do you think of the wii fit? I'm considering it as well.

Welcome to everybody.  This is the third challenge I've been with marmel.  He's great!

I seemed to have plateaued in a big way.  I think I've just gotten too complacent about it.

Anyway, here are my stats:

5'3" (on a good day, lol)

SW: 136 (September 07)

CW: 124

GW: 118, that's a pound a week.

I am excited because I just received my new walking shoes, so now i can do some "serious" damage...although I wonder if I'm not walking vigorously enough.  I just started doing 4 miles, and I come in at around 17.5 minutes a mile.  I do get slightly elevated and sweaty, so I think I'm doing fine.  (I don't have a bp monitor at the moment.)

Anyway, good luck to everybody!!

I'm in, even though I haven't lost any either.  And I'm going to vegas in July for my b-day...either I'll gain from eating and drinking, or lose from sweating, lol.

I don't have facebook, but have yahoo and AIM.

I'm starting a Slim Fast program. Need to make sure that I'm getting the right amount of calories in.

Kudos to everyone who is still on track!

CW: 123/124 - I don't have a sophisticated scale some of you, lol.

I drink Slim Fast in the morning with a banana.  I was making my own breakfasts shake but these are higher in protein and lower in calories than the ones I make (although it is a beef protein, and not rice.)

That Salad sounds fabulous, lynn!  I'm big on avoiding all salad dressings/ketchup and bbq sauce though...I wonder how it tastes with balsamic vinegar and a smidgeon of olive oil?

I walked four miles yesterday, gearing myself up to do it 3-5 days a week this summer.  I'm hoping that will get me over this hump. I do have to be careful, though.  I came back and I was starving!  I can't over-eat after that walk or all my efforts will be down the drain.

Great job, everybody!

WTG everybody!! Even our little slips are mini-victories in that we can figure out and learn from them (sorry, it's the teacher in me, lol)

I'm down to 123...but I have a feeling that I'm stabilized at the moment at 124.  My ultimate goal was to be 118 (no time limit, but by my birthday would've been fantabulous!)  I've found a new walking route, which I'll be able to do once school let's out, so maybe that little change in distance and pace (I got some music made for walking, bpm's for 3.0 - 3.5 miles per hour...and then some more for 4.0 mph)

So we'll see.  I've come a long way to get to 123, so I'm extremely happy!

Again, wtg everybody!

Hey Ali!

Yeah, I'm going to do another one of these. I like it here.

The fact is, if I didn't do this every day, I would go back to bad behavior... and I have a trip to Hawaii AND a trip to Colorado in the next 30 days.

This place keeps me on my best behavior and, to be honest, it's really really working for me. But it's working for me because I feel like I'm part of a group bigger than just me and a gym...

...it's the community that makes it work.

Here's my personal dilemma: I promised myself no booze and no pizza until I hit a specific weight. I'm... close. I can see it. And... I can see the pizza.

So now I'm torn, because I want to keep moving down my path, but I feel like I totally deserve my "Day of Pizza and Whisky!" Although I'm sure I'll gain a few pounds in the process. That's right. Pounds. Plural.

Question: Is there anything to the "You can only absorb so many calories in a day" myth? I remember, when my friend was dieting like 12 years ago, he would have a "cheat" day where he would literally eat as much as he wanted because at some point, his body would poot out the rest.

I paraphrase.

Thoughts?

My thoughts...if, after re-training your body on how to efficiently take nutrients/calories out of your food, it will absorb the calories, end of story.  However, on the flip side of that, (and I'm speaking from experience here,) if I eat a lot of rich foods after eating nothing but lean foods, then yes, my stomach rebels a bit.  But I think a maximum absorption level is really a myth.

And I would think, marmel, that you have internalized this enough that if you didn't come on here you would still be on the right path.

I'm still at 124...saw a glimmer of 122, but then it vanished in the train wreck, lol.

Believe me, I'm happy at 124, but it's been about 6 weeks, and I would love to ultimately get down to 118 again, but I'm thinking that might not be an option.

I guess I could go to a gym, but somehow I feel outraged that I should have to pay someone to get me back into shape lol.  (I have a lot of these mental blocks - don't even get me started on technology or cars, lmao)

As for jeans, I've been a 7 juniors down from a 10/12 petite woman.  I have a pair of 5s waiting for me...they zipper up, but I have muffin top, lol...so some work is definitely needed.

I think I just need a kick in the butt to get myself in gear again.

Happy Monday! (Well, it might be Tuesday for some of you, lol)

CW: 124....still

I think I'm over-relying on summer break to get myself in gear.  Plus I was a big slacker these past two weeks.  It was teacher appreciation week last week, and there was a lot of food all week long.  (I had no will power...pizza is one of many downfalls, lol)

But I lost 12 pounds since January, so that averages to about 2 pounds a month.  Since I'm 5'3", I think my body has been fighting it lately.  I'd love to be 118 by my 38th in July, but I'm not stressing about it.  It'll happen when it happens.  In the meantime, I'm back to working out and logging calories and making my own meals.

Now if I can just win the lottery so I can hire a cook/nutritionist and a masseuse, I'd be one happy camper!

Great job, everybody!

Staying at 123.

I have an ultimate goal weight that I would like to make by my birthday on 7/5, but I don't do well with time vs. weight, so I'm just thrilled if it keeps coming off, especially around the midsection.  My waist is finally coming back, yeah!

First, mortal, buy yourself your Italian suit.  It'll be a fine tailored suit, and when you get down to your ultimate goal, you can have it tailored again.  Go back to the same tailor, they'll understand the nuances of the material and the design of the line.

I buy new jeans for ever five pounds lost and kept off.  It gives me bragging rights.  And I like it!  I also treat myself to a piece of jewelry every other month if I haven't reached five pounds, but have maintained or dropped.  I also get a massage every four months.  Not only is this a treat, but it's also healthy.

I think of treats as a luxury, so I try not to be too health related.  It's a celebration of me, and all that is me.  And I'm more than diet and exercise.

Mortalmonkey~

I know what you mean about being comfortable. I'm like that now, even though I'm not at my goal weight yet. I give myself way too much lee-way to enjoy other foods that aren't all that healthy (but oh! so delicious).

CW is still at 122, which is probably why I'm sabotaging myself. It's a good weight, but not my goal weight. Still have pockets of flab that I know I could get rid of, but lazy days happen.

Today was Cinco De Mayo ..and I totally ate guacamole, chips, chillequilles (sp?) and fried somethingoranother with cheese. Definitely not healthy. Good thing I took the fish out of the freezer today.

I'm also buying myself an mp3 player as a treat so I can listen to 30 minutes of walking music...in order to increase bpm to increase speed and heart rate. I'm off for the summer, so I want to take advantage of the gorgeous weather. Plus it's cheaper than a gym membership.

I'm up for another month thingy! Great job everybody!

Weight Loss How to plan for successful weight loss May 04 2008

I agree with gi-jane.  Don't do everything all at once.  You're body is a system, whether it's well-functioning or not, it has learned to maintain its own idea of a status quo.  Any change to a system needs to be done gradually if the change is to be permanent.  Otherwise, the system (in this case the body) will do its hardest to force the change out, to quell the disruption so that it can return to its former state.

Let's be realistic here.  You won't be able to lose 30 pounds superfast if you want to keep it off for the rest of your life.  You may drop a large amount in the beginning if your body feels it can spare the weight.  But the closer you get to your target weight, the harder it becomes because your body does not want to lose it.  Your body will also require a different amount of calories to maintain the weight, and will also require a different amount of activity level.  Losing weight and becoming healthy is a dynamic process.

That being said, here's my advice.  Try not to eat anything with added sugar (in the first four ingredients) or High Fructose Corn Syrup, like in sodas.  Avoid those 100 calorie snack bags.  Shop the perimeter of your store.  And don't deprive yourself.  Replace bad food with good food.  Replace chips with veggies and hummus.  A chocolate bar with a small dark chocolate square (55 calories, and a glorious way to end a meal.)

My plan works for me, it may not work for others, but I eat 5 times a day, and stay around 1500-1600 calories.  I could go down 2-300 more, but then my blood sugar level will be all crazy and I'll start to binge and crash.  In order to lose my last 4 pounds I have to add to my work out, which I will.

Diet smart, not hard.

Good luck!

LOL...you can do it!!!  I bet the food at that brunch will be spectacular.  I love good food (which is why I'm now trying to lose, lol).  And you did better than I would've at the mexican place.  I love mexican, and my downfall is cheese enchiladas.

Keep up the good work, and don't forget your sunscreen when you go out walking!  I was in Boulder last august (first and last time, I think, definitely not my cup of tea).  Man, was that sun hot!

I would like to say that vacation calories don't count, but we know they do.

Good luck!  But if you go up in spite of everything you do, no doubt it will be minimal, and you'll not get all guilt-trippy on us (lol) because you did the best you could!

Have a little faith, you might even come back slightly down!

alright so i weighed in today

im at 135. still hovering around there. im beginning to think that while i would like to slim down a little this might just be my healthier weight. maybe i should start turning what i have into muscle.

Em~

Have you been using weights in your workout or just cardio?  Cardio is definitely good to get your heart going and to build up that stamina that you're going to need when you start using weights.

Just remember, muscle tissue and fat/adipose tissue are two separate types of tissue, and they can't turn into one another.  Muscle is leaner and denser tissue which may translate to higher numbers on the scale, so don't let this discourage you!  The scale is a good motivator, but so is how your clothes fit, and your energy levels, etc.

Start adding in that resistance training, and you'll see a difference!  Keep up the awesome work!

Here's my opinion on "free days." (and remember that it is just an opinion, lol.) In my experience, free days became loop holes. I used to have free days. And if I slipped on my diet during the week, I'd say I would make up for it on the free days. And I never did. I would feel totally defeated and like a failure.

What I recently learned which has helped me tremendously in eating and exercising is...learning to forgive myself. Before, if I ate a candy bar, I'd feel miserable, thinking things like, "no wonder I'm fat!" Now, I think..."I ate a candy bar. At the next eating opportunity, I'm just going to make a better choice." (Notice I didn't say, "right choice," because it's not about right and wrong, it's about accepting the slips and moving on at the very next opportunity.)

The same holds true with exercise. I'm not always going to be dedicated, and I've learned to live with that. I do the best I can most times, but I am human and I will slip.

I've also learned that I absolutely cannot end a meal unless I have chocolate, lol. So I've acquired the taste for Dark Chocolate. One 1" square from Ghiradelli's is 55 calories. But I have that after I have my humongous salad and an orange, or my small dinner. I build my treats in to my eating plan now.

Like mortalmonkey (who, I assume was a fan of the Man Show, lol,) like he said, it's not about deprivation.

Eating right is a lifestyle change, and sometimes Life requires a little chocolate every now and then. Wink

Zephyr...I heard of some people using stability balls to sit on when they work in an office setting.  That might develop some muscle, which might, in turn, burn more calories?  Just a suggestion.

Last monday: 124

Thursday: 123...although it was teetering a bit back to 124, but I'll take it!  It's a battle, I tell you, lol. I think I'm at the point of only losing .5 pound a week, whew!

Goal: I have to be good on Saturday, because Sunday I have a baby shower and then am going out to dinner.  (May and June are so hard...all those parties, ugh!)

Only 2.5 more weeks???

Reflection: I don't do well with this time thing, I'm beginning to realize.  I feel pressure and then failure if things aren't going the way I like.  I would like to be at my goal weight by my b-day on 7/5, but ultimately I'd like to just be at my goal weight! lol  Interestingly enough, weight is leaving me, but I'm still thick around the belly *sigh* (but not as thick as I was previously.)  I attribute it to genetics..grrr!

Way to go everybody!!  There is obviously a sense of dedication and drive with everybody here!

134 pounds. up a pound from thursday and i totally know why. i cant seem to keep it under 2000 calories. i dont know why really...i am eating fairly healthy, i love fruit. i think i just eat too much bready type things but thats what fills me up best. any suggestions on healthier filling alternatives?

Bready type things...I know exactly what you mean. I love a good hearty bread. I ended up just substituting pasta with brown rice. It's not the same, I know, but it does fill me up. 100% whole wheat English muffins - good for appropriate serving sizes to.o I sometimes have a veggie burger with some marinara sauce, lettuce, and onions on one. Not too bad and good calorie count.
100% whole wheat tortillas work too, but they can be dry. 100% whole wheat pancakes rolled around a half a banana. The banana keeps it moist.

Pitas work well too.

The trick is to get the 100% whole wheat, and those can be dry. So they need to be balanced out with something moist (mayo would be lovely, wouldn't it? lol,) like tomatoes or avocados or Dijon mustard, or organic marinara sauce.

Hope this helps!

Happy Monday, everybody!!!

I was a little nervous about the weigh in  because of my lazy day on saturday, but I weighed in today at 124 - stayed the same, but that means no gain either, so I'm happy.

I've been really sticking to my calorie range of 1500-1600 since thursday, so I'm hoping I'll see a pound drop either this week or next week.  I'll just have to persevere.  (I'm fighting those last 6 pounds, what a battle that is turning out to be!)

It sounds like everybody is working hard and staying dedicated.  Great work!!

Well, marmel, that was some smart thinking with the salad!  I know what you mean about weekends.

Saturdays are my lazy days in every way. I don't work out, I don't do work for work - if that makes sense, I just lay around, maybe take a walk if the weather's nice, but that's about it.

And the same goes for food. I still log my calories, and try to stay around the 1500 mark, but it certainly isn't healthy food that I'm eating, lol. If I didn't have these days, I'd be crazy, lol. (I also run out of healthy things to eat on saturday, lol)

Tomorrow is shopping day and the healthy eating starts all over!

People laugh at me, but I carry a small ziplock snack bag of Honey Nut Cheerios with me where ever I go. They seem to keep me when I begin to disintegrate because of low blood sugar, etc.

Hope everyone had a great saturday!
