| Foods | CSA farm share...anyone done one? | Oct 10 2009 01:24 (UTC) |
|
I've been a member of several CSAs over a number of years and I Love them. I do a workershare - I don't have to pay anything, I just go out to the farm for at least 40 hours over the season and work off what I would have otherwise had to pay. My farms also allow you to do half shares and half workershares, where you pay half and work half or you get half a box or something. They're pretty flexible. I get some stuff that I don't care for, but I just give it away, or trade for what I do like. The CSAs are always willing to work with you - if you don't like cabbage but love celery, they can work it out so you get way less cabbage and way more celery etc. I can never eat a whole box quick enough, though. I just chop up most of the veggies right away and freeze them. I also get goat milk, cheese, and all sorts of meats and eggs from my farm. |

you can freeze it. It'll actually keep quite well and then you can just make more zucchini bread when you get more :) |

Hey stephanie, my boyfriend has also been on prednisone and every time he gets on it, he gains a ton of weight. I was recently reading up on some medications that I'm on when I found some people in forums talking about being on steroids and then their doctors added another medication to their regimn to control the weight gaining effects. I don't know if it's true or how safe it is, but you might want to talk to your doctor about how to counteract the weight gain from your steroids. Most likely you're not doing anything wrong, it's almost definitely the drugs. |

| Fitness | I need advice on buying an elliptical machine. | Aug 21 2009 15:01 (UTC) |

I have a life fitness that I love. It was about 1k from 2nd Wind. If you want to spend only $500 you should just go on craigslist and see if you can find one in your area. You can always talk people's prices down. The most important thing with an elliptical, though, is comfort. Don't just buy it because it's cheap, get one that's actually comfortable to use regardless of how much more it is - cause really, if it's not comfortable, are you really going to use it? Then, even though you only spent $300, you basically threw it away since you never use it. I use mine daily and even though I spent a lot more than I wanted to, it was worth the extra to get one I liked. But craigslist is a lifesaver if you want to spend less. And if you do decide to get one from a store- get the warranty! I can't stress that enough. :) |

Good morning all! As far as at-home exercise goes, jump rope is awesome. You can even do it without the rope if you want ;) and it's way easy to do interval training with it. I should get back into that... Anyway- I feel kinda lame cause I'm still crapping out on actual exercise. No Ellipticalizing yet this week. But! I think it's kind of okay because I'm sleeping instead and with my psycho schedule and being completely exhausted all the time, I think it's fair to try and get some sleep for a while. Plus, I'm still doing weight training despite not doing cardio. Man are my triceps sore today from last night! And I'm still doing well with food! I think as long as I can get and keep food on track, everything else will fall into place. |

Yay for you and your wine asamoss! I think it's completely acceptable to eat/drink anything you want if you can stay within your calorie range :) rebg - I know exactly what you mean about those last 10 lbs. It's crazy. I've actually been on CC for nearly two years and around xmas was down to 113 trying to get to 105-108ish and just could not do it for the life of me. I ended up getting super discouraged and gaining back to about 118-125 whereever it is I am now trying to get right back down again. It sucks how hard it is to get those last pounds off! From what I understand, eating healthy and exercising are great for those - but you almost need to go uber clean and cut out white flour and sugar and everything. Luckily, I think you can add it all back in once you're down to where you want to be. Or not :P I think you can probably get down to whatever weight you want without doing that, it just takes longer and more effort. Heh, I'm a total sugar addict so right now I'm trying to cut sugar and caffine and white flour and things out to see if I can't get back down to at least my 113 days. Thanks to this - so far so good! And yay recipes! I'm hoping to make a yam and parsnip mash tonight to go with my tilapia or chicken. I'm almost considering throwing my two supersoft (cause I should have eaten them sooner) apples into the mash - I think the sweetness would be pleasantly complementary with the yams. :) How's everyone doing today? :) |

Leslie Sansome, eh? That sounds interesting! I'll look for that the next time I get over to half price books- (I like to not pay full price for media ;) ) And the recipe is super easy! It's just however much chicken you like - I used about 30 oz of boneless skinless breasts and 14 oz of Jeanie-O turkey sausage, a 28 oz can of diced tomatoes not drained, 1 small red onions, a big red bell pepper and a big green bell pepper, 10 oz of mushrooms, 3 cloves of garlic and tons of assorted spices. I think I put a lot of chili pepper, powdered garlic and onion, a dash of salt, black pepper, oregano, maybe som curry spice - I bet canjun spices would be awesome with it too. I'm a spice-a-holic and stick a huge variety in everything I make. I pretty much just diced it all up, threw it in a giant baking dish at 425 F for like 45 min then took it out and stirred it up and threw it back in for another 20 min. I think it turned out pretty well and made a TON of servings. And it's great on rice- especially since the rice soaks up any extra liquid. I think it would be neat to add some tomato paste to it - or if you like things sauce-y to add a big ol can of tomato sauce. There was plenty of liquid at the bottom of mine, so it's kind of a taste-test thing. I tend to experiment with foods a lot. My roommate always makes fun of me cause I'll be like "I'm trying a new recipe!" and she'll laugh and remind me that despite the fact that I have a recipe in front of me, whatever I make is going to be tweaked so much that the recipe ends up little more than a suggestion rather than something I actually follow. But it usually turns out pretty tasty anyways! so Woot! |

Good Morning! I hear ya, asamoss, even though it's only day two, I feel like maybe I can stay on track now thanks to joining a group and actually feeling like I ought to be accountable. Yay! Well, I'm off to log my egg tomato onion scramble and carrots. I'm kind of psyched cause I made a chicken, turkey sausage, tomato, onion, mushroom, red and green bell pepper bake thing with rice for lunch and it is tasty! |

Well, currently I'm eating waaaay too many calories- but that's because I've been slacking and not counting for the last few weeks. I usually aim for right about 1200 calories. I mess up most weekends though but even with that - I even out right around 1400 cals. I've tried eating more in the past and I just instantly stop losing. Plus, if I actually accurately eat about 1200, I don't tend to be hungry - that is, provided I eat real whole foods and not cake or cookies or something. |

My motivation at the moment sucks - so getting back on the bandwagon is my current motivation :P I've kind of been off the wagon for a couple of weeks now. For exercise: I was using my elliptical machien 45 min a day 5+ days a week but lately that's dropped a bit. About to re-start that tomorrow, hopefully. I also work out with a personal trainer doing really heavy weightlifting and occasional boxing. It's awesome! I highly recommend getting into kickboxing- it's fun! And lifting weights will help just about anybody. Don't be afraid of the weights! What is everyone else doing for exericse and motivation? |

I hear you - I too need some serious accountability/motivation - I'm in! Height: 5' 1/2'' Lowest Weight: 113 Starting Weight: 147 Current Weight: 125 ? maybe? Goal: 110 (for now)
Yay for us short girls, asamoss18! I like the tips idea! I, too, did the lean cuisine thing and that actually got me from 147 to 130 but it took a while :P Now I'm trying to eat really cleanly - so no more processed foods. I make a lot of crockpot meals with chicken and extra lean ground turkey as well as home made chillies and curries. Cooking is fun! I always make huge meals so I can dole them out into little tupperwares and freeze them and eat them for a week at a time as lunches. It's just like those frozen entre' dinners except I know exactly what's in it! It also helps to drink a ton of water and get more protein into your diet. :)

| Health & Support | IUD rant/ advice please! | Jan 21 2009 14:30 (UTC) |

I'm sorry to hear that you're having so many problems with your IUD. :( I actually got the Paraguard one right before the holidays and though it was intensely painful for about two days, it let up immensely after the third and I even just went back to my normal routine on the fourth day. (I got it on a Tuesday and was doing kickboxing on Friday with no problems). I definitely had breakthrough bleeding for a week after my period was supposedly done but had a completely normal, campless time since that first period. I'm suuuper happy with the paragaurd, but they definately told me to watch out for cramping and bleeding for the first three months. From what I understand the Minera is the hormonal IUD and because of that, it's going to act very similarly to most other forms of hormonal BC. It's just such an intense process to get it put in in the first place that I would give it at least the 3-4 month run to see if things don't normalize. I know the cramps suck hard but it really might be worth it to stick it out and see. Personally, I feel that the 10 years of no taking pills or getting shots or anything is totally worth the month or three of cramps and bleeding. Good luck - I hope it works out soon. |

| Weight Loss | 5ft and 1200 cals...does this sound right? | Jan 15 2009 13:56 (UTC) |
|
Hey! I'm also 5 foot 116 lbs and eat about 1200 cals a day. I work with a personal trainer twice a week lifting heavy weights and boxing and do elliptical cardio on my own 5+ times a week. It is insanely hard to lose weight/fat being as small as you are, but I wouldn't cut calories any further because I seriously doubt it would help. I personally can eat an entire pizza by myself in one sitting so I think that any less than 1200 cals for me would feel like a lot of deprivation. Plus, you're working out enough that you need every calorie. It really looks like you're doing everything just fine and I think your calculations are probably right on. Since you're at the point where further weight loss will be very difficult, I would look at exactly where your calories are coming from and start paying really close attention to macros - pro/carb/fat. If you're lifting weights, make sure you're getting a ton of protein- my trainer told me to get 1 gram of protein per lb of body weight. It'll help you retain muscle and lose fat. Make sure you're eating clean foods and not a lot of processed stuff. Maybe cut out the white stuff- white sugar, white flour (whole wheat is awesome). I started doing that a little while ago and it definitely helped - I mean, I at least feel better doing that. Another thing I want to mention is that at 100 lbs you're sitting pretty for weight, so you really should focus on body fat % rather than the number on the scale. Plus that way you'll lose a lot less muscle as you try to lose fat. Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | Has anyone changed their goal weight? | Nov 12 2008 14:21 (UTC) |
10 |
Heh, I've actually changed my goal weight several times - I'm just over 5' and about 118 now. I usually change my goal weight down though, not up. Alas, now I'm at a point where I'm actually gaining muscle and leaning out without dropping weight on the scale so I'm not sure what to set a goal weight at. :P Pretty much, I think that if you're happy at the weight you're at stay there :) Potentially, you could just have more muscle making you lean without actually weighing much less. So, since you're at a healthy weight and feel good about it, it couldn't hurt to maintain for a while and see how you like it. You can always try and lose more weight later if you feel like it. :) That said, I'm not sure how to maintain as I, too, have been doing the slow weight loss thing for so long now that I can't remember what it's like to stay one weight :P My guess though, would be to just eat more (good) calories (adding slowly if you're not comfortable just jumping from 1300 to 1800 or whatever your maintence should be) and don't cut back much, if at all, on the exercise. Exercise is good for you and will keep you healthier in the long run - besides, everyone likes to eat more :) Congrats on your weight loss thus far and good luck! |

| Weight Loss | Am i at a Loss?? | Nov 05 2008 17:39 (UTC) |

So, to be clear, you're essentially losing a pound a week but it's showing up as a loss only every other week instead of on a regular weekly basis? I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but I could be wrong. That's actually what's happening to me, too. I'm 5' 120 lbs and i do lots of elliptical and kickboxing/regular boxing and some weight lifting throughout the week eating roughly 1200 cals (which is actually only a 700 cal deficit max) and I've only been seeing losses every two weeks or so. It's very weird and somewhat discouraging, but I doubt you're doing anything wrong. Being relatively short, your intake should be fine. However! If someone has different ideas on this - let me know! I'm not really sure why it's not a regular loss either. :\ good luck! |

| Fitness | Need big help with resilient back fat | Oct 27 2008 13:13 (UTC) |

I know how you feel about the back fat :P Alas, ankow is right: unless you're taking steroids there is no way you'll bulk up your neck and there's no way to spot reduce. That said, I'm not sure how this would work for you in regards to lower back pain, but I've noticed a real difference in how my back feels since I started doing boxing with a trainer. It doesn't work out your arms like you would think - it's all your back and core. Plus it's way fun. You might want to consider taking some different classes and things just to spice up your workout. In the meantime though, really all you can do is wait for the rest of the fat to drop off in whatever way it chooses - usually being where ever you want it gone most will lose it last. :p Congrats on your loss thus far! |

| Fitness | new trainer today - will this get results? | Oct 16 2008 20:55 (UTC) |
|
I'd never been to a personal trainer before, but I started working with one for the first time about 5 weeks ago - and I've decided it's totally awesome and well worth the cost. I actually started seeing a difference in my legs after 3-4 sessions (i go twice a week). I'm not sure if that just has to do more with how my body burns fat (usually from the bottom first) or with the actual workouts I was doing - which aren't uniform. But having a totally different workout every tiem I go is exactly what I wanted. It's nice to have variety :) So: yes! I definitely saw/am seeing results thanks to my personal trainer, but you have to keep in mind that even if you're working out really hard it's still going to take time and everyone loses weight/tones up a little differently. Good luck! |

I don't have a wii fit (but I want one!) but I DO have Pump It Up - It's like Dance Dance Revolution, but it actually came out before DDR and has 5 pads instead of 4. It's two up corner two down corner and center. Now THAT game is a waaay better workout than DDR, IMHO. Especially if you use it in normal or hard mode instead of easy and do songs that keep the beat up. Like all of the artist Banya's songs. It's pretty much my favorite game. It's only for the PS2 and computer though (if you have an emulator). I'm sure it would also work on a PS3, but I've never tried. And! It's way cheap 'cause hardly anyone uses/knows about it. someday I'll get a wii fit though! I'm glad to see that people actually like it! |

I was a professional florist for about 5 years. Good for you for learning to make things yourself! It really is a useful skill if you're looking to save money on things like weddings, grad parties, anniversaries, etc. Heh, I totally understand where you're coming from with the wedding flower pricing - they charge ridiculous amounts and they almost all charge roughly the same thing. And more if you live in certain areas of the country. It's just insane. But yeah! Good luck! My only advice to you for making your own wedding flowers is I would recommend going with silk flowers instead of real ones unless you have a giant cooler to keep them in. Not only is it cheaper, it's going to save you a TON of hassel with trying to keep them alive. You also don't want to be making a million centerpieces and handboquets the day before your wedding - trust me, your fingernails/hands will thank you. Good luck! |

| The Lounge | I want to adopt | Sep 08 2008 14:13 (UTC) |
10 |
aww yay for kitties! My girls (who happen to be my profile pic) were both adult adoptions from humane societies. I found through trial and error with my parent's cats that a kitten will not always look like it does - the color can change drastically as it grows and a playful kitten will not necessarily become a friendly adult cat. Hence opting for adult cats to adopt. Personality of a cat makes a huge difference, and I liked the idea of knowing what I was getting into when I got my girls. As far as cost goes, Wanda- the tabby - has crystals in her urine that had something to do with the way her body processed phosphorous so she's on perscription cat food for life now that costs a good $20 for a 4 lbs bag from the vet (which lasts about 2 weeks)- but it works to keep her from being uncomfortable and peeing on all my furniture. There's no way you can be sure your cat or kitten won't have that kind of a problem, but if it does the cost to treat it can be pretty high. Not to scare you or anything, it's just a possibility. Actually, I've heard a lot of good things about getting pet insurance, too. Just in case. So for cost, I actually end up spending $60/ month on food (both dry and wet) and somewhere between $10 and $20 on litter plus normal vet bills of about $100 per cat per year since they're both young adults. |

| The Lounge | Who to tip and How much? | Sep 03 2008 13:39 (UTC) |

Tip anyone who does you a personal service. So hairdressers always, waiters and waitresses, bellhops, bar tenders - you could even tip your florist if you wanted. I always tip waiters/waitresses on the high end -around 20% unless they're awful, because they only make about $3 an hour. Everyone else you tip will probably at least be making minimum wage. The norm is 15-20%, higher if they do very well, around 10% if they do very poorly. But even when people aren't that great, I still like to tip at least 15%. Hope that helps! |

Hi! I too have been away from CC for a while, but I wanted to reply to this! As some of the previous posters mentioned, it really depends on where you live. But that said, I met my current boyfriend on plentyoffish.com and we've been dating for nearly two years now and I completely adore him :) And since our first "date" was just a coffee date, it went fantastically. If you go through free dating sites, chances are that the same bunch of people are going to be on most of them, so you don't have to wade through all the profiles. And you just have to be really picky about who you respond to. I pretty much refused to respond to anyone who didn't write me a coherent message or anyone who couldn't be bothered to use basic grammer skills in their personal messages. It also helped to mention things that i was interested in that are more eclectic and that got real conversations started. I wouldn't be too terrified of meeting anyone as long as you can hold an interesting email thread with them for a while first. And as long as you keep the first meeting or so public and tell all your friends the wheres and whos, it should be fine. Internet dating is actually getting to be more of a norm, so it's pretty unlikely you'll meet the next Ted Bundy ;) Good luck! |

does he like cheesecake? You don't have to add fruit or anything- you could even coat it in chocolate :D Super Simple cheesecake is: gram cracker crust (or you can make your own...) combine the milk and the cheese with a beater then beat in the lemon juice, pour into your crust, stick it in the fridge for an hour and you're set! It's a super sweet kind of cheesecake, too. good luck! |

honestly, a lot of these questions you should really ask your doctor about. you won't HAVE to use any other form of bc, but it's safer if you do - especially if you're switching partners or don't have a steady partner etc. but you definitely won't have to take pills AND be on the ring. It would be more like, be on the ring and use condoms or spermicide or a femcondom etc... How much it costs is often entirely dependent on your insurance or lack thereof. If you're really looking for an estimate though, I pay between $20 and $30 a month. If you're really serious about getting it, make an appointment with your gynie and bring a huge list of questions to ask them. Asking questions is awesome! They should be able to tell you ALL this stuff and write you a perscription to boot :) |

one thing to add to that, is for the first week (sometimes two) you need to continue to use condoms or spermicide or some kind of backup. This is true for pretty much all birth control, though. When you're switching/starting, you have to give your body time to adjust. After that first week or two, though, you shouldn't have to worry about the backup (though it's a good idea to use it anyways) |

I've been on it for well over a year and a half and I absolutely love it as well. It hasn't caused any trouble in losing weight, either. I was never really moody in the first place, but as far as mood swings go, it definitely hasn't caused any. I really haven't actually seen any bad side effects. Personally, I think it's wonderful - and I've tried pills and patches by the bunch and this is the best (for me) by far. You don't feel it, you don't have to worry about it but once a month and it's super easy to use. I just have to number the weeks on my calander to make sure I don't forget about it completely. I think that it's one of the lower estrogen ones, so that helps too. And I'm pretty sure you don't have to have any certain type of body or genes to use it - you just have to be comfortable enough with yourself to put it in and take it out :) And yeah, anyone can get it. I highly recommend it :) |

I have the same problem - I have my own elliptical machine but I set up a little tv (or you could use a laptop if you have one) in front of it and watch an episode of something. If you pick a show that's supposed to be an hour long, that'll give you a good 45 min workout. Or if you're actually watching television and not a show on dvd, it might even last an hour :) Unfortunately, if you're watching a sitcom, you have to be careful not to get lulled into just trudging along. Watching things with more action sequences tends to make me put more effort into the workout, at least. some gyms have machines with little tvs on them, too. or reading a book/magazine is a great idea - unfortunately, the only problem with that is that you have to hold the book up or open, which takes away from the exercise if you've got the moving handles on your machine. |

| Weight Loss | The Fat Smash Diet -- Anyone heard of it? | Jan 29 2008 14:21 (UTC) |
1 |
my mom actually bought me two of the Fat Smash Diet books. I read through them, and I think they're really restrictive. They actually want you to go on a week (or maybe two week?) long detox diet of nothing buy veggies and water and very few other options. Pretty much, the diet is the type that tells you exactly what to eat for several weeks and doesn't really give you any leeway at all. If you're the type of person who has to have treats or doesn't like things like oatmeal or whatever other assorted specifics are on their list, you're kinda out of luck. Personally, I started it and couldn't even make it through the first day - I'm not about to eat nothing but oatmeal and carrots for a week. Plus, I really don't think that his detox idea is very healthy. You have to have more variety than that. Or not only will you get bored, you'll get so turned off of dieting because you're so sick of those healthy foods, that you don't try to eat healthy at all. Anyways, I say don't do it. It's not worth it. It may work if you're into eating a very limited variety of foods, but in general I think that this site is WAY better for your weight loss goals. |
