This isn't the nicest subject but one that goes hand in hand with diet.......... it could be your poo's. When you make a change in your eating habits it can make you become irregular. Whether the change is from bad eating to good, or vice versa. Even from eating 3,000 calories a day to only 1,500. Being a dieter for several years now I notice it all the time. Often, one birthday party with cake and pizza can make me irregular for 2 weeks when my body has been used to salad and fruit and low fat whole grain healthy things.... Even if you are still going you might not be evacuating everything. If you stick to your diet things should all work themselves out and I bet you'll see a drop any time now. It's always the hardest in the beginning. ...... And in the end....... When they say the last ten pounds are the hardest they mean it, I've been stuck there forever! |

Well I looked at my numbers for last week and according to them I burn 2,200 calories a day. I was pretty shocked by that considering CC says 1800 and it seems if I have a bad day and eat 1900 calories I will GAIN 2 pounds overnight! But it's like you always hear, the last ten pounds are the hardest. That has turned out to be especially true for me! I.ve been fighting to loose the last ten pounds since, lol, the day after Thanksgiving 2007!! WOW. But after loosing 50 pounds and feeling soooo much more comfortable in my own skin I've definitely become a lazy dieter, not taking it as seriously. Plus I've always been torn between CC activity choices, between light and moderate. I chase 4 kids around, not to mention cook and clean and all that fun stuff for my large family of six. Do the soccer Mom thing, go to school, go to the gym, and garden and maintain my acre lot. At the same time I'm a spoiled housewife, I'm busy, but I can sit down and take a break any time I want, do things at my own pace. So because of that I choose light activity. Better underestimate then over, I figured. But I just changed it to moderate and it says 2100 now. So I guess I'm more active then I thought. Now if I could just stick with the calorie counting for a few months and loose that last ten pounds!! |

Why didn't I think of this!? I have been trying to loose weight since I had my last child, 2 years ago..... I lost 50 pounds the first year. Had a rough start trying to figure out the whole diet thing, and good nutrition, and building up discipline as well.... This last year I haven't lost an ounce. I actually bounce back and forth consistently between about 128 and 131. Ultimately I want to weigh 115. Maybe 120, we'll see when I get there. And I've been thinking a lot lately "If I only knew how many calories I REALLY burned in a day I might be a little more successful with these last few pounds" I never put a lot of faith in calorie counts burn meter. You can google a calories burned calculator and try 50 different ways and get a WAY different answer every time. I've gotten answers anywhere from 1,500 a day to 4'000 a day. CC says between 1800 and 1900.... Same thing with like the machines at the gym. One elliptical will say I burn 200 calorie in 30 minutes, another will say 350! It all drives me nuts. It was so much easier to loose weight when I was overweight... was a larger person therefor I burned more calories! Now that I am a more petite version it seems wether I eat 1000 calories or 3000 calories and no matter how many trips I take to the gym my weight still just hovers in this 3 pound range I've been stuck in. Starting today I am going to do this. I can't wait to know what I truly burn in a day! |

I would guess thats about 800 calories, myself. Thats exactly how I eat, every 2 hours all day, each time something very low in calories. Except that I eat at 8 pm and 10 pm as well. My target is 1200 calories a day, which is what Calorie Count recomends for me. But I am short, only 5 ft, and not overweight. So I need less calories then say your average height female that is overweight. I think a girl 5 ft. 6, and 50 pounds overweight could loose weight on 1,800 calories a day. But I would gain if I ate that much. So it really just depends on the person! Fad diets don't take the needs of the individual into account. |

I had a huge one the other day. Sometimes when I go into town to go shopping my hubby calls me and asks me to pick him something up at a drive through. I usually don't get anything for myself, just what he asks for. SOMETIMES I get a small chocolate shake, If I am doing well on my diet and know it wont blow my day. BIG treat for me. The other day I hadn't eaten anything but a cup of coffee that morning. It was like 2 pm. I was starving. My husband asked me to get him Taco bell. I've only eaten taco bell a handfull of times my entire life. Nachos sounded sooooooo good. So I got myself a "Nacho's BellGrande". Ate it on the way home, a good 30 minute drive. Get home, look it up...... 790 calories!!! I'm on a 1200 calorie diet!! Long story short. My day was blown.... |

Welcome! This really is a great sight huh? I found this sight about two years ago. Decided I would try the "counting calories" thing, googled "calories in an apple" and it led me to this. Ever since I found this site I have learned so much about healthy eating. I have fallen off the wagon a few times, but have successfully managed to loose 50 pounds. Only 15 more to go! I wish you success! |

From my understanding its common to implant several embryos in the hopes that one takes. On the rare occasion more then one takes the Dr.s talk to the patient about selective termination of the excess embryo's. And in this case the Dr. did but the mother refused. And unfortunately (when thinking of cases like this) a women has the "god given" right to have as many kids as she wants. So there was nothing the Dr. could do to stop her from carrying out with all 8 embryos (they only knew of 7 until birth). The Dr.s job was only to ensure this women was making a informed decision by explaining the medical risks. I have to think that this women must have concealed her situation from the clinic that helped her get pregnant. I don't know anything about who helped her with fertitilty treatments but I do know that the Dr.s that took care of her during pregnancy and with birth came across her after she was already in her first trimester. I have to blame this entire situation on the mother. No women in her right mind who has 6 kids (not sextuplets by the way, 4 singles and a set of 2 year old twins), is single, living with her parents, and on welfare would go in to have fertility treatments to have more, even if she only MEANT to have one more. And the latest news, by the way, is that she is now seeking 2 millions bucks and a TV show deal with Oprah Winfrey. This lady is nuts. |

| Foods | what is a healthy split of carb/fat/protien? | Jan 29 2009 18:00 (UTC) |

I've always understood it was a pretty simple 50/25/25. 50% Carbs. 25% fat. 25% protein. At least 25 grams of Fiber, of course. And for good weight loss.....they say.... multiply your ideal weight by 0.42. Example, my goal weight is 115 so 115 X 0.42= 48.3. So I try to eat at least 48 grams of protein a day. And "they" also say to try and not eat more then 150 grams of carbs a day. So Every time I log my food I look at my analysis and if I am low of Fiber grams I plan to eat a bowl of Fiber one for my next meal. Or if I am low of Protein I plan on eating something high on protein for my next meal. Hope that helps! |

I got so scared over this. One of the products that was recalled was the Austin brand PB sandwich crackers. I had a box of those and my kids had eaten all but a few packages. My son had inexplicably started vomiting the night before. As soon as I read the article in my local paper it became explainable...... I knew salmonella poisoning could take up to 72 hours to show symptoms, and that a few people had actually died from the outbreak. One in Idaho which is not far from where I live..... I was just waiting for my kids to all become violently ill! Luckily, other then my sons vomiting episode none of them did. I am definitely blaming my sons vomiting on the crackers though. He definitely ate a lot more of those crackers then any of my daughters. He eats non stop! So he must have gotten a small but luckily harmless dose of salmonella. There isn't anything else that would explain it.... I am just so relieved that was all that happened. |

I recently gained back some weight too. I got, at my lowest 126, down from over 180. Teetered between 127 and 129 for a looooooong time. Then this holiday season I gained a little, up to 133. And I felt FAT. I'm finally back on track now. Back under 130 (now if I could just get to my ultimate goal weight of 115!!). Looking back I really really felt fat at 133. Way fatter then I felt when I was loosing weight and got to that weight. And I think the reason is because the first time I got to that weight it was a victory. I was feeling good and confident because I was loosing weight so every little pound was an improvement from where I started. But then going from getting as low as 126 to 133 that WAS NOT and improvement. That was a gain, so........I think thats why I felt so much fatter at 133 recently then when I did before. Hope that helps! |

I still say she should be eating less calories. Reason being she is a small person, as am I. Barely over 5 feet tall. And weighs about the same as me too. CC says I would have to eat 1200 a day to loose 1 pound a week. CC says if I am light activity I only burn 1600 cals a day. Just over 1800 if my activity is moderate. It's different when you are small. With what she has eaten in the last week, being as small as she is, she probably only had a deficit for the whole week of 1500-2000 calories. Equal to only 1/2 a pound of weight loss. Several factors could change this to be no weight loss like If her food measurements aren't precise, or she is holding onto water weight right now..... |

My BMR is also around 1380. 1385 to be exact. I've been dieting for 2 years now. I am not the best dieter. If I were, I would have reached my goal weight a year ago. I've been struggling with the "last ten pounds" for.... I don't even know how long..... Actually gained back some as well :( So now I am working on "the last" 15 pounds! But I have been dieting long enough to know that at my size and activity level, I really have to eat the bare minimum (1200 calories) to see results. I also know that it is really easy to have little nibbles throughout the day without even realizing it. Just one little bite of something here and there doesn't seem like it would be significant to add up to anything that would effect weight loss, but trust me, it really does. 3,500 calories equals a pound. If I eat 1200 calories a day, I will loose a pound a week. But if I don't watch what I eat I can VERY easily eat an extra 3,500 calories in in 2 or 3 days, and GAIN a pound instead. It's much much easier to gain then to loose, at least for me. .....Easier to eat more then I should, then less then I need...... you know? And as far as activities go, I find it much easier to just pick my activity level (sedentary, light, moderate, active) I figure I fall into the light category......and just leave it at that. If I do anything intensive that i know is extra calories burned I don't even bother to try and log it. I just live my life, and try my best to control my will-power and eat healthy. And when I am good, I loose weight. When I am not, I don't.....or I gain! So I guess my advice to you is, don't pick, or nibble. Really plan and think about what you eat. Get a food scale for sure so you REALLY know exactly how many calories you are eating. And don't even worry about logging your activities. That probably only makes you think you have burned extra, so you can eat extra, and is going to mess you up! Edit: Now I just looked at your profile and see why our BMR is the same. We are the same height ( I say I am 5'1" cuz I like to round up. lol) and have the same goal weight, 115!

LOL santonacci. I have that laziness too. Except I will have those nibbles anyway. It always happens at night. I start nibbling on things I shouldn't and they don't get logged. Next thing I know I have no clue how many calories I have eaten, I just know it's probably not good. And yes. I have a HUGE problem with sugar. Carbohydrates in general to be more specific. The way my body reacts to sugar is down to a science. I react to them the way anyone's body does, but to an extreme. Being that If I eat anything high glycemic, I produce a lot of insulin which makes my blood sugar drop, when my blood sugar drops I crave more sugar/carbs to bring my blood sugar back up. When I eat more my blood sugar drops more, etc. etc. A vicious cycle. A year ago I was sick all the time. Nearly passing out practically every 5 minutes. Literally passing out a few times a day. So I went to a DR. and after lots of tests my Dr. Diagnosed me as being insulin resistant. I make WAY to much insulin so my blood sugar gets dangerously low. Which explains it all. Once I knew what that was I completely understood everything. Why I felt the way I did. How it connected to what I ate. I know now what I have to do to keep myself comfortable, happy and healthy. Even what to do to loose weight. I just get stuck in these ruts that I can't seem to get out of! And a lot of it has to do with what I see in the pantry! I don't look in the pantry when I am looking for food for myself. I keep all my "diet" stuff in a separate cupboard. When my kids want a snack they ask, I tell them what I will allow them to have, and they get it themselves. Honestly, the late night give-in's are when I am packing my hubby's lunch for work! I just have really sucky willpower. Anyways, the reason for this post in the first place was only to see if any other mothers (or parents, not to leave out night or any other Dad) in my situation have any tricks up there sleeve they utilize to get through the day with there willpower in tact. I've come up with several myself but after a while they just quit working. And I am out of ideas! |

Thanks smwhipple, I will have to try those!
My kids will know what they are missing! LOL . I have 4. The oldest 9. When I went from buying Cookies to granola bars (examples) 2 years ago, at first everyone was ok with it. But the more time that passes that my kids don't get things like cookies or ice cream, the more they complain about it. My oldest is the toughest. She complains about being hungry so I give her options, and she says no to each one and mopes around and whines. Reason being? She wants a cookie or ice cream, and knows we don't have it, and I wont buy it, and if she even asks......she will get a scolding! My 7 year old is the same. The 4 and 2 year old are a lot easier. 4 year old was only 2 when I started making changes in what I bought. And of course, my 2 year old was just born. But I really do my best to keep an even balance between buying my children snacks and treats while keeping it healthy for them. But still, I feel these things are good choices for my kids, but not myself as I am trying to loose weight. And I am one of those people who does just fine all day until late at night. Then I give in to temptations. And late at night it doesnt take very many slip ups like that to take your calorie intake from deficit to maintaining. And when you do that, your obviously not going to loose weight. This is my problem......
And to night, the reason I made this post is because I DO have issues with sugar. And Bananas are in fact high glycemic, I am not just making it up. If your not sure what this means, I recommend researching it, it could be very helpful to your diet. I also do the shopping and do as you. Buy what I think is fine for my kids, and different things for myself for my diet. But like I said. I have poor willpower at times. Especially at night. Which is my problem! And if I only bought apples, carrots, and celery as snacks for my whole family (5 of whom are NOT dieting) I think there might be a riot...... |

LOL. Thanks Altagracias! It's all so true. I believe I have been eating out of depression. Of course eating and gaining only makes it worse. It's a vicous cycle. And I have also eaten candy and junk I shouldn't because I felt I had already gained back so much weight, why try to deny myself something I want! (like M&M's). Such a horrible excuse of a thought process. I remember when I was so dangerously close to 200 pounds, thinking "your already fat, might as well just eat what you want, what difference is it going to make?". I'm starting to realize now I am getting back into the frame of mind I had back then, when I was obese (I sooo hate saying that. I think that is my least favorite word, but it's true! I was!). Thinking a few cookies or a bowl of ice cream or a chocolate bar here and there wasn't going to make any difference in my life. Maybe even added some extra enjoyment to my life. When in reality it is what was ruining me. I can't let it ruin me again! And you know the saddest part of it all? I am insulin resistant. When I eat sugar or High Glycemic foods I get really sick! Yet, I do it anyway..... |

Thanks guy so much for you support. It's funny but everything you guys are telling me is stuff I know! It seems I have just slowly forgotten all of it along the way, all of these basic "weight loss" principles. Eating lots of fiber, drinking lots of water, getting my fruits and veggies and protein. Stuffing myself with lots of healthy things, lol. Which was something I definitely used to do, like I said, eating a ton of steamed broccoli or carrots at night, when I am most hungry and most likely to screw up the whole day...... Working out..... I guess I just got lost. Hearing it from you guys I think is re-motivating me! I can't wait to start going to the gym again. I started going about 4 months ago, for the first time in my life. I wasn't loosing weight but I was getting nice definition in places and felt good about myself. RUNNING on the tread mill which is something I never thought I would catch myself doing.... Now I WANT to work out. I miss it.... When my daughter was injured I quit going. She was in no shape to be taken out in public and put in a playroom every day while I worked out. Working out seemed selfish all of the sudden after she was hurt. Not to mention the germs in gyms, let alone a playroom in a gym. She was at high risk for infection. How she injured herself was, she was wearing a plastic headband, took it off, bent it, and it broke. When it broke it threw her hand into her face with the broken headband in her fist, and she stabbed herself in the eye with it. Deep into the eye. Truly one of those freak accidents. Half the fluid in her eye drained out, and she lost 30% of her iris, she also recently had her lens removed because it developed a cataract, which will have to be replaced eventually, and she has to go in soon for a cornea transplant. It was devastating. On top of it all, I live in a smaller area with just your basic Hospital and health care needs. They had to fly me to Salt Lake City Utah, 250 miles from where I live, the closest place with the specialists she requires. And I have to drive her there every week now to be seen and operated on. I might have to miss the gym for a little while after my daughter has the cornea transplant, but as soon as she is well enough to be out and about again, I'll go straight back. But.....my work out buddy is out of town now. She will be back in about 2 weeks and when she is back we are going to start going again. I'm a boob, I can't go alone, haha. And I am getting excited. Especially now that I am finding new motivation, thanks to you guys, to get my diet back in order. Might actually loose weight this time! I feel so motivated right now!

Well Jen. I lost 50 pounds by not really eating any meals, so to speak. I would have coffee for breakfast. A sugar free energy drink for lunch. I would tie in a few slim fasts when I was starving. Maybe a few Jell-O's. And end my day with nearly a pound of steamed broccoli or carrots so I was so stuffed I new I wouldnt eat anything else before I went to bed! Eventually I started cutting out slim fast and adding in Bowls of oatmeal or Fiber One cereal. I think I did really good for a full year......as I got tired of one thing I was able to tweak what I ate to keep myself satisfied while still eating at a deficit and loosing weight. When I broke 130 I got a little too confident maybe? Got to 126 and I remember thinking that day "I could easily be 125 by tomorow if I am really good, and then I will officially only be 10 pounds away from my goal". I think that thought alone sabotaged me. I really got too confident. I felt really good about myself. Thought I looked great. And I guess I ultimately thought I could loosen up a bit. Started eating whatever. Some days I would weigh 127, some days 128. But I knew that that was just normal. For weight to fluctuate when you weren't literally counting how many calories you ate to ensure I slightly lesser number on the scale the next day. But I didn't freak out because I wasnt gaining at least! Well, now I have. And I am having a hard time figuring out how to loose again!! The only things I feel to eat are things I SHOULDNT eat if I want to loose weight! So, I don't really know exactly what I am asking for. Just if anyone has any ideas that REALLY work for them or meals any of you guys think are just the bee's knee's throw it out there. I'm open to all suggestions! |

I'm the same way that I notice when I GAIN. I wouldnt have before when I was really heavy but I recently gained some weight back, about 6 pounds, and I can really tell, being thinner now. Mostly because I don't think I look good in any of my tops anymore and my jeans seem a little snugger. But what I said about not noticing when I was heavier goes along with what susiecue said, that our brains are good at recalibrating. We just look like us in the mirror! I had to loose a lot to look different to myself. For a long time during weight loss, like I said, I still looked the same, just fat and round! I was buying smaller clothes, saw the change on the scale......just looked the same, to myself..... |

Hey everyone! My name is Afton. I am 5'1". I started 2 years ago over 180 and got down to 126. My daughter was injured and my life pretty much stopped and revolved around her and I ended up gaining back 5 pounds! My ultimate goal is to weigh 115 (I am large framed). I am hoping to reach this goal by March. |

I'm 5'1". I was over 180 at my highest. When I started dieting and loosing weight I don't think I personally noticed a change until I lost 30 pounds! And to me 30 pounds is A LOT of weight loss! It might sound crazy but..... I think the reason I couldn't see the change in the mirror was because at 180....170....160 pounds I was still fat and still had that round shape, lol. It wasnt until I had lost at least 30 pounds that I realized that I didn't look so "round". At then I even got to a point where I actually had a waist, collarbones even, and then I REALLY noticed. Seeing a real change in the mirror really is the ultimate reward. I felt really discouraged loosing all that weight yet feeling like I still looked the same. But no matter what, it's worth it in the end. So keep up the good work! |

I eat a lot of Fiber one (Original). One whole cup of this high fiber cereal is only 120 cals, and being high fiber its very filling. Put a half cup of Silk brand LIGHT vanilla soymilk on top and it's only 160 cals. A teaspoon of splenda (brown sugar blend or regular) and it's still only 180 calories! Plus I like old fashioned oatmeal, few ounces of the soymilk and some Splenda brown sugar blend ......200 cals, also filling. I'm kinda a cereal freak too by the way. LOVE cereal! Love breakfast food in general but I haven't been able to put together a plate of eggs, sausage and french toast yet that was low in cals, unfortunately :( |

I've seen that done on several weight loss television programs. And I have just never even wanted to try. I've lost 50 pounds. 15 more to go (which is proving to be extremely difficult, suddenly). But When I think about carrying 50 pounds around I just think about all the times I bought 50 pound bags of dog food. Just putting one of those in a shopping cart is a monstrous task. Let alone carrying it from my truck in the driveway into my house 20 feet away. It kills me! Luckily for me I don't have a large dog I have to buy 50 pounds bags of food for anymore! |
