i prefer raw, as well, but occasionally i'll microwave them. brings out the sweetness, but if you're roasting, i'm guessing you're into the savory. :)

Health & Support Period back? Dec 04 2008

yes, i did... but the light periods didn't last, unfortunately. *sigh* oh, for our health. no, my period was pretty light at first but now it's normalized... almost. i went through a phase where it was like when i first starting getting it and it was beyond the normal capacity of heavy.

hopefully that doesn't happen to you.

congrats on getting it back, dubsmom! it's a pain to deal with, but the best sign that everything is working properly in your body.

could someone remind my new boyfriend that tongue is meant to be an ornament, not the kiss itself?

i'm a lip kisser. and a good one, at that. nothing messy, subtle tongue-age... very sensual, very sexy. i've got an ego about my kissing, but i figure i make up for it in the lack of ego in other areas of my lie ;) ;)

i just want to add that this is really. really. really. really. funny.

and, my beagle smells like horseradish right now, wet or dry (though it is intensified when he's wet which is often since i live on an island and it's november) . he desperately needs a bath but, ugh, he hates it so much.... it's like i'm killing him, like i'm those bad guys in "beethoven's 2nd" (remember that 90's flick?)... you know, the ones that steal the puppies?

my skin went discoloured when i was at my worst and even now, on occasion, i get funky pigment. it is malnutrition. or rather, a vitamin deficiency, as my doctor calls it.

it's because of the lack of fat in the diet.

the only solution that completely worked for me was to watch the intake of beta-carotene (carrots, broccoli, mangoes, cantaloupe, sweet potato) and also UP THE FATS. when i ate, like, 1/2 cup almonds a day (which is ridiculous) my skin went back to normal.

you're also staying awake very late. you're feeling the hunger a lot of people feel in the morning (or don't because they've slept through the hunger... you know?)

my guess is that yes, you need to up your intake, but also make sure you're getting enough sleep. you're probably eating because you're tired.

wow, you guys are very informative.

i agree with what you are saying re: condoms. i really don't get it and i think a talk about it is definitely in order. i know that before we don't use them i'm going to insist that he is checked for STDs. since i was checked over the summer, i feel like i've done my part in that area.

csberier: i'd never thought that the "start-and-stop" would be detrimental but now that i think about it, you're totally right. eek.

Ims: i don't have issues buying condoms. it's him. he has issues using them. i don't know, i'm fed up with my own thoughts about it.

i appreciate all your input. i suppose the real issue is that i don't want to use hormonal methods of contraception and i feel like there's not any other choice, given the circumstances. but that's not true. no exactly. i have a feeling this might be one of those times where i'm "people-pleasing" and neglecting myself... *sigh*

Thanks so much for all your replies,

josna: i'm glad to hear you and your friends didn't gain when you went on it. i'd like to wait a while, but i'm not sure if it is an option... i don't know. as for the guy carryin' the condoms, i just feel a bit insecure with 'em, that's all.

karen: being pregnant would be a serious effect. so serious. *shudder* just so not ready yet. thanks for your advice on the hormonal effects/dosages. you've inspired me to look up some on my own and see what i can find out.

emilyd: i've considered the diaphragm, and wanted to go that route but my significant other isn't all too interested in condoms so it kind of defeats the purpose since diaphragms aren't really reliable on their own. did you gain weight on nuva ring?

The Lounge At a loss! what advice to offer? Oct 25 2008

this subject has interested me for ages... i worked with an autistic boy for a few years. it was really quite intriguing. at the time, i did a lot of personal research. i'm not a qualified therapist but i have taken in oodles of information.

one documentary i saw dealt with a child who was trying to be "mainstreamed" into public school and experienced expected problems socially, including violent incidents. they found that what was actually the most effective way of easing his relationships was to EDUCATE HIS CLASSMATES on autism (or asperger's, as it was).

as soon as they had insight into the subject, they were much more compassionate with him and the violence between them stopped. yes, he was "different" - your nephew is "different" - but teaching children that differences should be valued is so important. teaching anyone to be more open and accepting at any age should be valued. if your nephew does not feel threatened by these kids, he won't "attack" them.

so that's my advice. get your sister to talk to the school about talking to the class about what autism is.

Vegetarian Preparing pet food - weird question.. Oct 25 2008
00:53 (UTC)

hey guys. i couldn't help but respond when i came across this post. i worked in a pet store for many years that specialized in pet nutrition.

my two cents:

dogs and cats are obligate carnivores: they need meat to live. they do not need carbohydrates at all - they regulate their own blood sugar. so meat is a must.

raw is the way to go: i know it's gross, but they get so much more out of it nutritionally. you also don't have to worry about salmonella or problems with the meat for them - their stomachs are so acidic. i've never come across a dog with salmonella poisoning.

if you really can't handle the raw, there is a food called evo which is grain free and probably the closest thing to a raw food kibble on the market. google nutrapet.

if your dog has dry skin and it's year round (if it is not year round, it is probably seasonal allergies) , then chances are, it is an allergy to grain. 90% of food allergies are grain-related. cut out the biscuits and wait for 4-6 weeks and see if the skin improves. fish oil is also the really good for the skin.

are you treating your dog with a flea treatment such as advantage or program? vets tend to recommend them to high-heaven, but they really are a very harsh chemical and many dogs have skin problems and allergic reactions because of them.

other thing to keep in mind: most vets are not trained in pet nutrition. on average, they get about one day of nutrition info in vet school and that day is funded by kibble companies such as hills, science diet, etc. - foods which are stuffed with fillers and crap-protein sources.

your best bet is finding out what works best for your pup by doing your own research. you'll work it out :)

you're probably on too high of a hormone dose. i think that that definitely contributes, regardless of whether the majority experience it or not. i know that there doesn't seem to be any proof for this sort of thing, but i just know my own experiences.

some people have different reactions to hormones than others considering everyone's body chemistry is different to begin with.

i can't be on the pill for this reason. it messes with my moods and cravings too much so i automatically go for food. sounds ridiculous, i guess, but i tried many different types. as soon as i got off the pill, i dropped about 7 pounds. this was back in high school, about four years ago.

Health & Support Nuts about nuts... Aug 15 2008

i've done a lot of research on eating raw almonds because i'm completely addicted to them.

there is a lot of information out there about how they don't actually lead to weight gain, even an increase of 500 cals over the daily limit.

something about how the fats in almonds have "fat blocking" properties so you don't actually absorb everything in them. like, 360 cals is only equivalent to 70 cals.

i mean take the info how you want. it makes me feel better when i'm replacing the majority of my meals with raw almonds. i seriously think i have a problem. hehe

but at least they're healthy!

it's so difficult to break out of the routine.

i came into this summer feeling very much like you, defleplan. i was addicted to my routine and rituals.

then a friend asked me to act in a play and i started interacting with people again. and you know what? i hated it AT FIRST. i couldn't stand that everything was messed up. but by the end of the whole process i was looking forward to hanging out and being with people. now i'm working on another show, my own, and seeing people again and it feels really wonderful. i don't want to go back to that loneliness.

and i guess the confidence i've felt lately has had a positive effect because yesterday i went down to the university and saw a counsellor. interesting that i did it when i'm on such a high note. i suppose because i'm afraid of falling into that hole again.

you can do this. is there anything you can get involved in? try something different where you could meet new people. working definitely helps.

take care of yourself. even if i haven't responded, i've paid attention to your posts. i'm sorry you're having a rough time.

haha i got the job but i was so put off by the interview that i didn't take it.

take care. i've gone through similar experiences - losing/gaining is really tough!

first of all, i'm very sorry to hear about your mom. i can't even begin to fathom what you're going through, but i hope you can heal and regain your strength.

in terms of weight loss, why not take a different outlook? like, you want to accomplish feeling physically strong and energetic. i often find if i am depressed that if i maintain my diet, i feel much more in control of my life and less like everything his chaotic. let your focus be on what you're putting into your body and what you're doing with your body and mostly how you feel, and less about the number on the scale.

that said, often just getting a nice balance of carbs and protein can help with weight loss. for example, make sure you're eating protein and complex carbs every time you eat, and put yourself on a schedule with it so that you know when and what is coming and you don't have to think about it. you could also cycle your calories to keep your body guessing. raw nuts are also a fantastic weigh to boost the metabolism and speed weight loss.

first and foremost, take care of yourself. try to get as much rest as possible and treat yourself well. this is a difficult time and sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is just to let things go, let yourself off the hook.

i hope that helps... :)

i LOVE riding my bike! i have a blue cruiser and i ride it all over the city, hills and all. the hills are thankfully becoming easier.

i don't drive at all - no learners or license - and i would way rather ride my bike than take public transport, especially in the summer. it's so fun anyway! i ride to work and school and the grocery store/video shop... mall... coffee... pretty much everywhere

whenever i lose my routine, i'm likely to binge

stress and procrastination

things being out of control (ie if i go out to a friends place and have a drink or something, i'm likely to binge when i get home because i feel like i screwed up)

when i have a point in the day when i'm desperately hungry, i usually end up bingeing later on

good for you for wanting to tell your mom.

i told my mom and it has helped me so much. i tell her when i feel one coming on, and she takes me out for a cup of coffee or a walk or something. and when she sees that i' struggling, she addresses the situation with me and asks "is it worth it?" because she knows how guilty i get (like, wretched-crying-guilty).

i really recommend it. my mom told me about her past problems with it and she's been able to help me search for a balance between letting go on occasion and staying healthy.

I have IBS and this happens to me sometimes, too. I take stool softeners sometimes, laxatives if it gets really bad. The one thing that usually does it?

Taking a day off.

Seriously, if I have a day where I take it really really slow, maybe head out for a walk, drink lots of coffee, water and RELAX, I am more likely to go. I've noticed if i'm really busy, I'm in danger-zone.

Hope that helps. I know it's awful. Go easy on yourself!

And half a mini watermelon works wonders...

you look awesome! you look like you lost more than that. you actually don't look much different than your 130 pic.

i went from 155 to 140 a few summers back and went back home to visit my friends and everyone commented and i had absolutely no idea i looked any different! (i actually hadn't even stepped on a scale, just decided to cut back).

see some people you haven't seen in a long time!

your response may have been due to the stress of eating the "forbidden food" ... i wouldn't think that two tablespoons would make anyone sick unless they were sick anyway or you had an allergy.

i wouldn't give up on pb just yet! next time, just have a teaspoon and wait for a reaction.

keep up the good work!

btw, raw almonds are also very yummy and a wonderful source of fat.

Health & Support no, no, no, no, NO!!! Apr 29 2008

i can relate to a lot of what you are saying. i often obsess that people are talking about me and my weight as well. but the truth? they're not. most people could probably care less.

when i was 16 (when it all started, 5 yrs ago), i messed up my metabolism pretty badly and ended up gaining a lot of weight from bingeing after a prolonged period of starvation. i basically "took some time off" after that... i still had very disturbed thoughts, but i ate mostly what i wanted and then some and the weight stayed the same. i remember trying so hard to restrict again but i never lost a significant amount.

three years later, i moved from the city to vancouver island, away from everybody and everything that i knew. i also got a dog, and took the opportunity to attempt to get a hold of my eating. at that time, the weight FELL OFF ME. literally, it was so quick... i just recognized that i needed to be more balanced and watch the muffins. i was in no way starving.

my point is that the metabolism recovers and yes, i takes time, but it recovers. and seriously, eating 100-300 calories a day is only going to make this worse and more difficult. if i were you, i would work to accept yourself as you are - a beautiful, thin girl, in no way chubby at all. you are perfect. you just need to let yourself off the hook, let go for a while - your metabolism will thank you for it.

please don't call yourself chubby at 130lbs and 5'5"... i know it is how you feel but i highly doubt you are "chubby"... at that weight and height, you don't need to lose a thing. it could be so much worse.

Weight Loss Another Sizes Poll Apr 29 2008

i'm an size 2/XS at gap which i find ridiculous. at american eagle, i have a size 0 and a size 2 in pants and then small for the tops. in kenzie clothing, i seem to be a small/4.

the thing is, i don't know if i'm just crazy, but i really think i am a size 4. these sizes seem way too small for me. i'm no stick. i have a canadian made designer jumper(daise) which i'm a snug 4 in which seems accurate. is there a difference in canadian stores and american stores? i know there's a difference with europe.

petite_powerhouse: i was thinking that when i was shopping the other day! at gap, i was like, well if i'm an XS, then what about the really tiny people??

roj47: i do think the consistency is accidental. but why aren't there just standards?? i find the same thing when i'm shopping for shoes, btw.
