Motivation Lost my battle to weight loss Oct 24 2008

Dust yourself off and get back on the horse...  It can be done but you need a different mind set.  Last October 12 (07) I weighed 212.  Today I weigh 165.  And I stagnated from April-August after separating from my husband but I didn't gain it back, I just didn't lose any during that time period.  What I found was that you have to look at it as a lifestyle, not as a diet.  That's how it works for me anyway.  Nothing works the same for everyone.  After years of doing high fat, low carb, I went low fat, calorie counting.  And it's worked.  I won't say I never eat anything with fat or that's just not good for me, but if I do eat a piece of pizza then I enjoy it and move on.  I don't gorge on it and I don't cry about it, it's just life and a slice of pizza.  By eating mostly low fat and knowing when I've had too many calories, you control your own destiny.   I read all labels, don't buy ANYTHING with trans fat on the label, although if you look at the ingredients, you can bet that it has some trans fat.  I've cut out most saturated fats and eat things high in mono, poly and omega 3s.  Go for it.  You can do it.

Hi all:  sorry I was late weighing in.  I don't have internet where I'm living right now so I can only do it at the office and Friday was busy, busy, busy...  I wish I knew the secret to losing so quickly...   But I guess as you get closer to your goal, it gets harder to get there.  Since I started in October, I've lost 21% of my body weight so I don't guess that's too bad.  But it sure is slow going at this point.  I've lost 44 pounds but want to lose another 29 pounds.  Maybe my goal is not realistic... I want to get to 139, I'm 50, 5'6" and medium framed.  Anyway, I'm going to keep at it.  Y'all have a great day.

Swimchick - where are you located? I'm in eastern Virginia and we are having a long run of 95 plus since last Tuesday. The last few days it's been 100+ and then figure in the humidity factor.  I also don't have ac but I've never liked it anyway.  I'm definitely a summer time person.  I get mean in the winter - LOL - due to lack of sunshine.  I think our weather is supposed to break Wed. and go back down into the 80s.

Fitness Polar F4 Heart Rate monitor ! Jun 09 2008

Hi: I bought an F6 on ebay for about 55.00 and love it. I don't need, nor know how to use the functions of the higher numbered Polars and this does the job for me. Times my workout, shows me calories burned, heart rate at any given time and in summary it tells me how long I was in the "zone".  I think it actually does much more but I'm not too worried about it.  I bought my hubby an F1, which was all that Walmart had, but all he wanted was something that showed his heart rate, so he's happy with the F1.  I love the HRM because when you are doing things like cutting grass with a push mower, yard work or heavy house cleaning, you can see the calorie burn and heart rate.  It's great for a lot of activities that can't normally be rated for calorie burn.  Go for it!!!

Spaghetti squash is great!!  And versatile.  It's just kind of a pain in the you know what to cook.  I've used it many times, either with fake butter, like spaghetti or you can put sweetener on it too.  You can eat a whole bunch of it for small calories.  One of those undiscovered foods!!!  Have at it.

Hi all - 50 here (51 in November). I've been on CC since October last year and have lost 43 pounds so far.  My goal is 139.  This site has helped a lot.  I keep a daily log book with me to enter everything I do.  My family thinks I'm a bit obsessive about it but it works for me so I don't really care what they think...  LOL.  Everyone in the family is over weight by quite a bit and they all complain about it but aren't willing to change their habits to fix the problem.  Oh well.  Sorry the beautiful weekend is over and now it's back to work.

Well, I see that this thread has finally died.  I finally broke into the 160s but today I don't have a scale available.  And that cooking out over the weekend probably didn't do me any good either but it was worth it.  And I found that the Hebrew National 97% FF are really good.  I think only 45 cals. per dog.

Oh, I'm making sure I do the "good" fats a lot.  Just cut out ALLLLL trans fat and as much sat. fat as possible.   The things you mentioned, I eat all except the avocados. Just can't do those things.  LOL.  And I'll splurge maybe once a month with a good old fashioned steak.  Eat lots of cold water fish, etc.

If this is a sudden onset of sciatica, you may want to get it checked out by a doctor. I had it but it was caused by a collapsing disc and I eventually had a total disc replacement (the Maverick disc). Just a thought.

Thanks. Usually for breakfast I will also include a whole wheat bagel or maybe cereal. My eating style is low fat and counting calories and it's worked so far (43 lbs lost since Oct) but I've been in a stall for the last 2 months so I was trying to shake up my diet with some fruit, which I don't usually eat a lot. Making myself eat breakfast is probably the hardest part of my eating style because I just never did, even as a kid and usually skipped lunch as well.

Many years ago when I was a young woman, I waitressed at a restaurant that primarily served seafood.  I live in the Tidewater area of Virginia and blue crabs are one of the favorites here.  So this couple ordered hard crabs and when I brought them out to the table, it was obvious that they had never had them.  They tried to eat them with a knife and fork - LOL.  After I showed them what they were going to have to do, they ordered something else.  Just a little too  messy for them.

Gloucester, Virginia here.  My husband and I are separated at the moment but working on it.  He has also started working out on Bowflex and doing the treadmill and we are starting to play golf together.  I brought the machines to the house as part of my weight loss program and he seems to be in a much better frame of mind since he started working out.  Yeah - endorphins.

Hi all:  STill stuck but I think I'm in too much of a calorie deficit and that's what's doing it.  I worked in the yard Sat. for 8 hours and kept the HRM on the whole time.  It said I burned 1945 calories just in that 8 hours.  Nothing strenuous and except for when I was pushing the mower, I wasn't even in a "burn zone" with the heart rate.  But if I burned that many calories in 8 hours then the estimate on this website is just too low.  Someone else suggested that as a smoker, I'm burning more calories anyway.  So I guess I need to shake up my body, eat more, etc.  Friday I played a golf tournament with my husband and his company.  My first official game and since it was Captain's Choice, there really wasn't much pressure on me.  It was fun.  Then yesterday we were supposed to play a couples tournament at the local golf course but they canceled at the last minute because not enough people showed up.  So we ended up playing with another couple I had never met.  Definitely not as much fun as  Friday but at least it was some exercise and practice.  I had one brilliant hit in the whole game but that's better than nothing.  Just going to take practice.    My goal for next week is to be in the 160s.  Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Motivation I've been stuck in the 170s for 2 months!!! any suggestions?? May 15 2008

Thanks. I'll try it.  I've been keeping the calories low because I know I'm not doing much exercise but anything is worth a try at this point.  I know as I get closer to my goal weight, it's going to get harder but jiminy Christmas, give me a break!!  Thanks for the suggestion.

Interestingly enough, I had that conversation with my Rabbi when I was 13, about losing faith.

God, according to the Rabbi, understands the human condition. He understands how people move away from him and then move back to them as they get older and more comfortable with their life and want to reinvite God back in. God doesn't mind.

I absolutely like that idea.  It makes much more sense to me than bible thumping, fire and brimstone, going to hell if you don't do so and so.  No offense to anyone intended.   If God created mankind, in his likeness, then he certainly ought to understand their failings.

I can't say I've read the whole of any testament, old or new.  If, when you die, you sit at God's side, is there a determination of who was good and who was bad or do they all get to sit there?  And I'm not trying to be argumentative, just curious...

To some extent, I'd say Sartre's version of hell is a bit more correct. Hell is other people.

Not all people, but people in general.

Absolutely!!! And each person's hell is different and personal.
