I think you should definitely stick toward the 1500 calorie side for your net calorie consumption. 1100 is not enough, and even 1500 is pushing it for a man. Good for you on the weight loss and exercising, but I would say you could probably eat more and still lose weight. Good luck! |

I think I have to say woman. I do think it would be cool to spend like a week as a man to see what it's like, but I don't think I would want to live a whole lifetime as one. I like being a girl! |

In my opinion, I think that a weight loss plan should include healthier foods than what you are eating. You should at least try to change your eating habits in terms of the foods that you eat. It's hard to do, but once you start eating healthier foods, you'll stop wanting those fast food items. I agree with gi-jane in that I wouldn't trust the calorie counts listed on restaurant websites. Someone on here (I forget who it was) once went home and weighed the ice cream cone from McDonalds and it was like twice as much as the serving size. Try to start preparing your own food at home, at least most of the time. Otherwise, choose healthy items instead of items that include the word "smothered" in the title. Eating out is risky when trying to lose weight, because they don't train their employees to use exactly X amount of oil or butter and it's never accurate. |

Are you measuring your food very carefully? A digital scale is the most accurate way to do this so I would suggest buying one if you don't already have one. It could be that you're just underestimating how much you're eating. I hope you figure it out, good luck! |

You are trying to gain weight, right? I am positive that most of that weight is water, since you haven't been drinking as much. Have you eaten a lot of salty foods too? I sometimes gain huge amounts of weight after eating chilli for dinner! Try not to worry about exact numbers on the scale (I know it's hard!!) because these things are not exact. There is no way you could have gained 8 pounds in less than a week unless... no, there's no way! Try to look on the bright side though, because gaining weight should be your goal, right? It's really hard to see a big gain, I know, so maybe it would be best to put the scale away for a while because it really can be triggering. |

If you aren't happy now, you won't be happy at an even lower weight. Losing five pounds won't get rid of the bulges and it certainly won't get rid of the underlying reason that you want to deprive your body of enough food. I seriously doubt you have bulges, but why not try doing some weight training and pilates. Gaining weight in muscle will actually make you look leaner. If you can't see that you don't need to lose weight, you should go talk to a counselor at school about your eating disorder, which is exactly what it sounds like. |

The extra fat you're talking about is normal. Everyone needs a little layer of fat on them, and women especially. One big problem I see here is that you are losing muscle. When you don't give your body enough calories, it always goes to the muscle tissue first for its food. You need a lot more calories since you are a teenager and you work out a lot. Teenagers need at least 1500-1800 a day and that is with no exercise. So you must be burning at least 500 on top of that. I would say to shoot for at least 2000 calories, and you can probably still lose weight. However, since you've been eating so little, you might see a gain at first. Don't let this stop you from increasing your calories though, because you're young and your body will catch up soon. I was eating too little last year, and what I did was add about 100 calories every two days or so, and I didn't gain any weight. You can probably add more though, because I wasn't exercising. Good luck and eat more asap!!! |

| Foods | Greek Yogurt is not as good for you as regular (source Shape magazine)? | Jan 09 2009 20:10 (UTC) |

Yeah, don't listen to magazines. They also probably endorse the special K diet, which is bogus! And I like Greek yogurt better even with the extra calories because it feels more like real food. It's not too liquidy like a lot of the regular ones. So if you want to save the calories per ounce, eat regular. But Greek seems more substantial I think. |

| Foods | When to weigh meats?? | Jan 02 2009 21:45 (UTC) |

I weigh it thawed and raw. That's the most accurate I think. Different methods of cooking will reduce the weight by different amounts, so weighing it when raw is usually better. Plus the weight on nutrition labels is usually given as a raw weight. |

| Weight Loss | Question about burning calories.. | Jan 02 2009 21:32 (UTC) |
12 |
Yes I think it would be the same. The reason you probably see a gain/maintain when you eat more while exercising more is because your body hasn't had enough time to use the food that you ate. There is more weight in food inside your body so that would account for the weight 'gain', but you wouldn't gain fat. Another possibility if this is over a longer period of time is that you are gaining muscle through exercise or at least maintaining it. Losing weight without exercise means losing muscle as well as fat. Hopefully that sort of answered your question. |

I agree! I went way overboard with the eating on the few days leading up to Christmas, and Christmas day. The day after I started back on my plan and I'm feeling much better. I'm way to afraid to see how much I gained though so I'm going to have to stay away from my scale for a few days and start exercising. Good luck everyone! |

If it's not normal that you eat that little, then you're still probably pooping some extra stuff left over from last week or something. Sounds gross... If you're not hungry and eating so little, eat some nuts or nut butter or drink extra calories. Never eat under 1200 though! |

I can see where she's coming from I guess, because she's probably never been close to that weight. But she really should watch what she says. That's very offensive and not appropriate especially since I'm sure she has girls who look up to her who weigh more than 120. |

I am also a night snacker, so I try to find low calorie things to munch on that take a while to eat. Some of my favorites are 100 calorie packs of popcorn, baby carrots, dry cereal (like kashi golean or fiber one), raw green beans. I know it's not quite the same as that bag of chips or brownie, but it makes you full. I also drink caffeine free tea at night and it usually takes care of my "hunger". |

Do pilates!! It really works! My stomach was way flatter after only a couple of weeks. You can buy a DVD and they're not too expensive. I have a Winsor pilates DVD and I find her kind of annoying but if you turn the volume down it's great. Eventually I memorized it anyway so I just do it on my own. |

Have you experimented with increasing your caloric intake a bit? I know that for a lot of people, they just need a little boost to their metabolism to break the plateau, so I would give it a try. Like susiecue said, try a 400-500 calorie deficit to start instead of such a big one. As long as you have a deficit, even if it's small, you'll lose weight. Some people start losing weight faster when they eat more. |

I have a small suggestion because you said you wanted to lose 30 pounds by january? That's a lot of weight in less than 2 months, so I would definitely try to take it slow since you said that you were too strict the first time which caused you to take a break. You don't want to get really off track again, right? But good luck on getting back on track!! |
