Original Post by trhawley:

I think that a lack of education about the proper way to drink alcohol is the problem.

I was so amazed when I attended a parents evening at the new school of my boyfriends daughters school. The biology teacher explained the subjects he was going to present to the kids. Ok, the ordinairy things like cells and sex but also smoking. And I thought: what about drinking?

I worked at a hospital that has a special clinic for teenagers that arrive in the hospital unconscious because of alcohol use and get special intensive care there until they wake up. One of the pediatricians has specialized in alcohol use in kids. I've read some of his stuff and it makes you shake what can happen and will happen when they go through such a moment in their life. I live in a state in Holland that is not really highly populated but still every weekend one or two kids arrive there. They get their cure but are then moved off to a special therapy for pre-alcoholism. All of them.

I agree that kids get their info way too late. We focus on smoking alone but "forget" alcohol. How to handle it and what to do when your friends use it and you don't want to. Learning to find the strength to say no (a lot of kids use it because they think they have to).

I think that is much more important than just put a law up and tell them it is forbidden. It only becomes more exciting to drink. You're drinking AND you're breaking the law. How much fun is that when you're a teenager?

Use it as a "cucumber salad", put a bit of salt on it to drain all the moisture and then pour on an olive oil and vinegar dressing on it. I love zucchini that way. It looks like cucumber but has a slightly different taste that way.

I haven't started yet :-) I'm starting Oct 1st.

I do agree that it all comes down to burn and intake but I'm talking about a metaphysical level. What do you think?

Maybe it is a bit woo-woo talk but this really makes me wonder.

yeah just take you time. your life probably changed  tremendously so don't forget to enjoy this wonderful time in your life. These are times you want to remember when you're 90, not the agony of forcing yourself back into a regime you really don't want to be at this moment :-)

good luck

I recognize your "problem". I had the same thing. But it is fairly simple. You are just too focused on your boyfriend and that is really normal in the beginning. Accept that it is so, it will become better when you know each other for some time longer. Don't be angry at yourself because of it.

Before you had your boyfriend you were probably single and had all the time in the world to focus on good food and enough exercise. All you had to do was do that and you got great results.

Now your attention is elsewhere. You are in love and he is all there is (at least that's how it worked for me). After some time (and I notice that I'm now after 5 months am getting back into it) you will have the attention span again to focus on him AND food/exercise.

It is all about keeping damages to a minimum. I only gained 5 lbs in the last few months just because I decided to focus on one thing. You can chose what you want to focus on: drinking water, exercising, not eating sugar, whatever you want. Only choose one thing.

Keep that as your main focus besides your boyfriend. After a month you choose another thing while you keep on focusing on the first thing (which is a habit by then). Keep on adding one thing every month.

And keep on enjoying the boyfriend. Maybe you only gained 3 lbs because of him Wink. I mean... only the faster heart beat MUST stand for extra burn! hahaha let alone all the other activities you like to do with new boyfriends.

Have fun and don't be too harsh.... you are doing great and I bet that those 3 lbs are only water weight because you had so much chips (which is loaded with salt).

Fitness Beginner Runner Apr 15 2009

I started running 7 weeks ago in a class. I am still very much overweight (220 lbs) but I am doing it anyway. I go s-l-o-w. My teacher didn't allow us to start before we bought good shoes and gave us a good interval planning for our practice outside the running class. She said that most people start way too fast and too long and then get hurt. Any pain is a signal that you overstep these aspects.

So we started with intervals between walk - active walk - jog. When we jog we do not get faster than someone who walks actively (we even practice this with partners where one walks and the other runs) and we still build the same condition. At first I could not run more than 30 seconds and that was quite milestone! I never imagined I would ever run. Now I can do 2 minutes. I tried to build it up faster but then my muscles start to hurt and I will lose time instead of win time.

We are not allowed to practice more than 1 time during the week besides the lesson. And I am convinced that because of that I'm still boo-boo free and have fun running (even with my weight) while someone else whom I know got hurt after 3 weeks becuase she went too fast and too far.

I hope you'll have fun and get where you want to be...

Enjoy the memory of nice foods and probably good company and go back to the original plan. Do not cut back on anything or work out more. Just go back to normal. That's all.

And no worries... it will happen again and you will learn to keep within limits.

Weight Loss What are they feeding their kids? Apr 10 2009

I wonder if it is all about the food and the amounts kids eat. I think that the emotional state that a lot of people are in contributes more to weight problems than they can imagine. An (emotionally) balanced person does not have the need to overeat or drug him/herself with sugar and fat. Food is a very good way to fill an emotional gap in your life. This is not just book talk but I've experienced it myself.

That is why you can lose weight but still gain it all back (and more) if you do not address the reason why you ate in the first place. All major life change starts in the heart and the mind and not on your plate.

Kids (and grown ups as well) can handle food much better (and do not need as much sugar and stuff) when they learn how to like themselves. Address the insecurity, fear and sadness and they will rather go out and play than hide and eat.

Parents will have to learn that they cannot quiet their own emotional gap by giving sweets and other crap to their kids. 40 years ago you got a sweet or a kiss if you fell on your knee, now you get a handful of sweets (if not more) to make up for the time that they feel they should be there but can't because they have to work or are not (emotionally) available for other reasons.

This is not an attack to parents but more a call to not only focus on their overweight kid but also on themselves because the kids do not go to the supermarket

I agree with Sara. Where it comes to patient safety your boss is really taking some grave risks that he can't talk straight when someone dies. If you are starting to make serious mistakes there is a chance that you may have to call in sick??? But I wonder if that doesn't bring you more problems than you have now.

This really worries me. In my country you can call the health inspector anonimously but I don't know if that is an option.

Fitness Anyone doing this workout Mar 16 2009
22:24 (UTC)

that's interesting. I am glad that I informed my trainer in November that it was my dream to run. He changed my weights training then and I recognize a lot of these exercises... :-)) I lost 50 lbs before I started. I'm still overweight but I didn't want to start before I would hit that 50 lbs (afraid to hurt myself).

I had my first running class last Wednesday. I have an exercise schedule next to my normal weights workouts which consist of a lot of "active walking" (a bit slower than power walk) with every so now and then 1 min of jogging. Active walking goes as fast as jogging and it isn't as intense on your muscles. I've been doing that for a couple of months as well. But now I'm f-i-n-a-l-l-y running. I dreamed for so long and to be honest it was my thing to keep losin weight. I want to run and see if I'm going to like it as much as I think I will.

I'm so proud that I'm doing this and I'm glad that I chose a program that starts really slow. There was also a class that focuses on a 5K in June but I chose the class that trains for a 5K in October. June would be too fast too soon. October fits me better.

Maintaining Defining the "Binge" Mar 10 2009
13:34 (UTC)

I think you are quite right. There is a difference between being out of control with food and feeling guilty because you ate something that you THINK you shouldn't have. In my opinion there is more than enough space to have that bowl of ice cream or that snicker bar. But if the bowl becomes a whole tub or you eat 10 snickers bars then you might have a problem.

But binging is quite something different than allowing yourself a little bit so now and then.

Weight Loss BMI range--how is it supposed to be understood? Jan 31 2009
11:17 (UTC)

don't make the bmi range holier than it should be. When I work out very hard I can lose fatcells and gain muscle cells which are heavier. All in all I've lost fat when you look at it but my weight can go up and so the BMI goes up. That is what is happening to me these days but I'm still very satisfied with what is happening. BMI is "just" a number and in the end it counts how you feel about yourself and your body.

The Lounge Is this true about sugar?! Jan 29 2009

Check what the sender of the poster is... this is the Sugar Information Center... they want to sell sugar.

oh well... 50 yrs ago they also said that smoking was healthy! We also know what a big load of ... that was. A lot of people died from that. Too much sugar is also harmful for your body.

Sugar may not be a weight gainer (calorie in-out story) but what it does do is cause you a high in your bloodsugar followed by a low because your body starts to make more insuline. When you are low you start eating because you become hungry.

As mint-julep7 I've also cut out almost all sugar and sweetners out of my diet and since then I'm doing just fine with my weight loss. I replaced it with slow carbs which take much longer to get into the bloodstream.

If I want a sweeter taste I use honey or guavasirup. Again: since then my mind and body is so much quieter. I almost never have binges anymore. I only eat sugar if I can't hide from it (i.e. when someone else makes my food) but those moments are not often.

Health & Support Winter Depression!Please Help!! Jan 29 2009
12:56 (UTC)

thank you for the advice.I do have the lamp but it causes some serious headaches!!It is really annoying.I am sooo low about this all.

with a good lamp 20-30 minutes per day for 5 days should be enough but you can easily take 3x10 minutes per day because this seriously "wakes you up". Because of the lack of light your body keeps making the melatonin and your body thinks it is night all day long.

make sure that you don't take the sittings too late in the day. I myself get red eyes but that heals after a day when I'm done with it. You do not have to look in the lamp all the time, maybe that accounts for your headaches? Just read a book in front of it and look at the lamp for a few seconds every so now and then.

I was also very low but after a cure of 5 days last week I started "hopping" again... I feel great again. Invest in a good lamp because this is not going away but will come back every winter.

Symptoms of SAD is not only feeling trememdously tired and the need to sleep for ever but also a great need for carbs and for some people weight gain, also pulling back from social stuff.

what a nitwit... I experienced the same thing some time ago. People who "hog" a machine while they do another exercise while in their 30 seconds rest. But this girl really took her time with the other machine and left her towel over the machine that I wanted to use.

I would use some lighter weights while getting back into your routine.

I can sure understand that you shocked the living daylights out of her and that all she could do is cry. When she nagged at you for being overweight maybe she was telling you in a (okay, very very) hidden way that your health was important to her. People act strange when they are shocked. Especially when they see when other people do what they secretly want to do as well.

I never knew how worried my mom was about my health until I started to lose it. Even yesterday she called me to tell me how wonderful I look while before she would never even say that. My weight was a nono to talk about. Not so long ago she told me that she worried that I might die of an obesity related illness and I never knew that she worried about it. I don't think by the way that it would have helped if she would have expressed her worries to me. I would have probably been eating more and faster... ;-)

But, I'm glad that you now know that losing weight is something you have to do for you. Not for someone else. And yes of course we want to hear from our mom that we are good but some are just not capable of it. I hope that your mom grows into it.

There are glutenfree breads and even flour (if you want to bake it yourself). It looks a bit different but with a bit of imagination you can pass it on for bread. This way you can have you toast again :-)

You'll probably be able to get it online somewhere. I'm from Europe (Holland) so I don't really know where to look for it but it must be there. You could ask a local nutritionist.

Wow it really cleared up a lot for you! For me it helped great in my mental blocks and feelings of anxiety. When I look back on it I think that my moments of anxiety could have been sugar highs going over the top. It sure feels the same way. When I have sugar now and I experience the rapid heart beatings I can look at my situation and see that there is nothing I should or could be scared about but I did eat sugar.

A while ago I found this list on which you can find lots and lots of problems that might be caused by sugar intake. I found it rather shocking to read. IF and I say IF it causes so many problems then people should really watch out what they put in their body.

I still find it really interesting to find out how much it helps me in losing weight and my personal development journey.

It try not to become anti sugar but when things become so much better in only a good month then it is hard to stay neutral about it.

I have a feeling that the quantity of what's eaten is the major problem. Unless there is some medical problem.

Yep that was my problem as well when I didn't lose anything AND I wasn't eating enough fruit and dairy. A visit with a nutritionist gave insight.
