| Weight Loss | How much of a calorie deficit do you usually have? | Feb 21 2009 04:14 (UTC) |

My deficit was 1190 today on a day I worked out. I wonder...is that too high! I've never really kept track of my deficit before but I'm working on it now... So according to my home page...that was the deficit... Is the defiicit for a daily basis or a weekly basis? You lose weight when your average deficit is over 500? Thanks! |

I'm here rockingrandma! Last week I was 196, this week I'm down 1.5 lbs, so I'm 194.5. I'm doing the Zone, which is based on balance and moderation. I HATE diets, but I LOVE this one, because it teaches you how to think about food and eating vs. giving you a list of good foods and bad foods. It uses "favorable" vs. "unfavorable" and includes why each is on each list. And, if you WANT to eat unfavorable foods (which we all do) then it shows you how much is a portion and how you can train yourself to eat less of the unfavorable food than you're used to by supplementing it with other healthy things. Yes, it's all the things you know, but it helps when someone charts a course for ya. I'm also taking Kickboxing at my Gym now. YAY! So I'm going to kickbox every week. I'm already seeing a difference after two kickboxing classes in two weeks. It's REALLY hard though, and I'm usually the one that stops and takes a break in the middle like 5 times! At first it was embarassing, and still is sometimes, but until I'm used to it, I don't want to DIE...so I'm going to take it easy. How's everyone else doing? |

Ok. I need help. Something is wrong here. I'm not doing my best, I admit that, but at the same time I'm not eating 3,000 calories a day either. Why is my weight such a roller coaster from week to week? I could NOT have gained 3 lbs in a week. I could NOT have lost 3 lbs in a week. This is very frustrating! I have been measuring myself and even THAT fluctuates from day to day. I try to weigh myself everyday and take an average, but it may be driving me crazy. mon = 198 tue = 194 wed = 196 Am I the only one confused? My clothes fit better (on some days) that others and NOTHING is constant. What can I do to kickstart my weight loss? I'm thinking of cutting carbs for a week or possibly fasting for a day, or maybe even trying something new and radical in one area of fitness that might send a jolt to my system and cause it to get working again. Any suggestions? - Austj020

Ok Team Blue, I need help. I had a talking to from a personal trainer about how to get a healthy eating plan. His plan...count calories for 4 days out of the week, for 3 days eat whatever you want. Ok...so week one I lost 3 Lbs of weight. It was awesome-o. Week two I lost 2 lbs weight. Week 3 I gained 1.8 lbs. Week 4 (this week) I'm up 3 lbs. So total from starting this I guess I lost 1 lb. This seems SO wrong... :( So, I did a rough calculation of the cal intake of just yesterday, 'cause I didn't count, and it was 779 calories OVER my burn meter. DUDE!! This can't be right... So I few things: - Maybe this 4/3 plan works if you are JUST starting watching what you eat, because it makes a difference. I somehow don't think I fit in this category, since I've been working on weight loss for a while. It started with a fitness consultant coming to work, and everyone at work is doing this and it's helping them a LOT, but also these are people who don't cook, mostly eat fast food, and barely exercise. So, I don't know if this applies to me.. - Also, That's a lot of freaking calories...am I going to balloon up? 'Cause 4 weeks of intaking that canNOT be good. - Another thing to take in account. When I started this whole thing, it was that time of the month, and this week is also that time of the month, hence why I know it's been a month. So, I have no way of accurately telling how much this helped...but it doesnt' seem to be helping. I don't know how much is water weight, but I do know I ususally go up 5 lbs..'cause I don't exercise and water and a lot of stuff.... - My mom, who doesn't count calories or exercise at all is ALL about this 4/3 plan and it's helping her. I don't want to just JUMP off and discourage her from continuing this, but I don't think we are in the same place weight wise or metabolic rate wise, so I dont' think I can do this, but I want her to keep doing it if it works for her but she doesn't want to do it "alone". Should I pretend to still do it? While not REALLY doing it? - And the last part of this MULTI-FACETED question. How do I get back to a "decent" perspective on calorie counting? I do good on the week, but those 3 days are outrageously horrible, and I'm afraid after 4 weeks of doing it, I've made "bad foods" a habit... :( HELP!!! |

We are doing the 50millionpounds.com challenge at my job. I work for a large company so every site has a team and we're in competition to see which site can lose the most weight. Of course I know a bit about how losing lbs goes, so it's not the ONLY indicator of health, but I think this is a great start!! I just wonder how long the office will be serious about this and continue to keep themselves and everyone else in check.

Well, admittedly, I know what did it today. It's a choice issue I guess. I work at a restuarant (with NO nutritional facts posted) and when I eat there I have to track down the recipe and log everything individually. Unbeknownst to me the 'healthy' chicken Apple walnut salad was about 768 calories! So that pretty much killed my calories today :( We also have bites of things - so that we can inform guests of what is on the menu. So occasionally I'll have to log things like "1 Tbsp of a Double Fudge Brownie Sundae". Today...just not a good day apparently. But here is what I had so far today Apples - Granny Smith A 86 45 Breakfast blueberry oatmeal 36 120 Asian Sesame Chicken Salad - Hand-Tossed Salads A- 112 147 Lunch Lettuce, Cos Or Romaine - Raw A 98 17 ATHENOS Gorgonzola Cheese, crumbles D+ 42 144 Raisins, Seedless A 28 84 Newman's Own Three Cheese Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing D+ 44 147 Walnuts, English B- 20 131 Skinless Chicken Breast 224 200 Snacks Double Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae D 28 76 Total Calories Consumed 1,110 Also these are for the most part guesstimates... The veggies sound like A good idea. With a lean meat. |

| Weight Loss | How many calories should I eat ? | Jun 10 2008 17:30 (UTC) |

You won't like this at all, I know it already, but here is my suggestion. Eat more calories. (You are a dancer. It's part of your normal activity level, so go and change your activity level in the caloric intake section of your profile and let it calculate what you should be eating. You probably did a GROSS underestimation of your daily activity. You are highly active currently so you burn more calories just to get through your day. By eating only 1250 cals, which is less than your active body needs to do the things you usually do everyday, you are sending signals to your body that it is starvation time. What does the body do when it thinks it's starving? It stores fat and doesn't burn ANYTHING. So..you should probably eat about 1500 calories... Do different exercises. (Switch up your cardio weekly. Instead of a treadmill every day, transfer the treadmill out for something new like a bike for just one of your cardio days. Guarantee me you'll feel the difference.) Hope this helps! I'm large myself, so if you'er thinking "how do you know?" it's because my weight loss buddy is much shorter than me and weighs less than I do and she works out everday to the same exercise tape, while only eating soup and smoothies. I told her this, and she was relieved, and it actually helped her get off her wicked plateau.

Zen - It's cool. I understand how you feel. No doubt. I lose it ALL when I lose it too...my mind that is. 1st of all look at the positive. You're lost about 10 lbs in 9 weeks, even after gaining 3.5 this last week (which by the way is water). That's amazing! I've only lost 5.5 in 9 weeks, which makes me think "What the hell is wrong with me?!" But that's my issue. The point is, you're doing GREAT! we lose track sometimes, and keep in mind this isn't like the TV show. This is life. In life we don't work out 9 hours a day and have someone watching our every move (THANK GOD). The good thing is that you look at what happened and you still want to move forward. You want to correct it. Trust me, that feeling is much better than apathy. I'm struggling with apathy now. I think because the wedding I was going to, I won't be attending any more...and I'm not going to see all those peopel I wanted to show off to. That makes it harder right? That means, I have to do it for MYSELF! But that doesnt' mean I have to do it alone. We are here together. Blayne - Rock out! Did you do anything special this last week to toss off 10 lbs? |

So week 8 is 194. Up by .5 lbs. Not bad for TTOM! I'm usually up by 5-8 so YAY. I'm going on a road trip in a car...Grr.. Any suggestions on what I can snack on while I spend 30 hours in a car? Will try to record what I eat, but I think that'll be hard. That's going ot be my goal...not to deprive, but to record. THat way, I will be like "oh...damn...that was a lot of calories. DO you really want to waste valuable dinner calories on say...chips?" then I'll make healthier choices... And I'm going to PRAY that every gas station has those 100 cal packs...

Sorry for the late weigh in! I just forgot about it! Team 3 SW - 201.5 Wk1 - 199 Wk2 - 194 Wk3 - 193.5 Wk4 - 198 Wk5 - 196 Wk6 - 194.5 Wk7 - 193 Loss This week = -1.5 Total Competition loss= -8.5 3 more lbs til my next goal of 190! If you look you'll notice the 3 weeks down, one week up trend that I have. I'm going to break it this time! It's that TTOM, which is the one week up thing that happens, but this time it won't take me 3 weeks to get back on track, or whatever it is...it will just keep going down. Why? I'm thinking becasue of my attitude. I recently realized I don't love myself enough. Which is a problem. In more than just the area of weight loss. It's like I'm doing everything for someone else, including weight loss. I never pinned down why I wanted to lose weight, 'cause I couldnt' think of a good reason. Then after looking at EVERYTHING in my life from a new perspective I realized why... a) I want to be able to rock a bikini. So that I can look at myself in the mirror and go "Wow, you look hot". If other people think so, great, but I want to not criticize myself in a bikini. I want to know see all of the flaws, or rather to get past them. b) I don't want to be the largest person in the picture with my friends. I want to be "normal" sized. c) I want to look good on camera. I look GREAT in photos, but I mean video tape, film. d) I want to shop in any store, for the most part. I dont' want to find something cute, automatically go for the largest size, go into the fitting room, see it doesnt' fit, and then leave dejectedly with my head hanging. I want to go shopping with my friends rather than saying "yeah guys, no Lane Bryant in this mall, so really no point in me going" or "Yeah, I'm going to go to the women's section while you guys chill over here in Misses/Juniors". e) I want to eat food I enjoy without the fear that "this will automatically go to my hips" f) I dont' want my weight to be an issue for the rest of my life. g) I want to be healthy and strong so I can have a longer life and greater survivability. h) I want to be happy. (which is possible without losing weight, granted, but when I lose the weight, I also want to gain a sense of self rather than lose me...you know?) |

Hey team! When I finally weighed in last it was 194.5! You know what that means? I get my reward! 'Cause I've reached 195. Last week I was at 196 so yay! Now, I must continue. Other good news - I've decided, I'm only weighing in on weigh in days. I'm thinking the everyday weigh thing is acting as more of a downer. SO I'll check it out. I'm sicky poo :( So I've missed the gym for a week and I didn'd supplement for at home exercise so...just lots of fluid. So the other day I made my mom read this article on power foods that help you lose weight, it was about 4 pages long, so she had no excuse not to read it, and guess what? The next day the pantry, fridge, and freezer were packed with GOOD powerfoods! Amazing huh? So now I have all kinds of goodies to have. I decided that for the most part I'm going to work on being a planner. Meaning, I'm going to plan out what Im' going to eat. With my mom aware of the powerfoods, that'll help. Also, I'm setting weekly goals to work towards a little bit everyday. I'm on week 4 of my bodybuilder work out thing. I notice a little tone, but for the most part I'm STRONGER. That's not a bad thing at all,but not the original goal. So, I'm going to keep on it until I plateau, then I'm going to lower the weight and increase reps, to tone. Good plan? I hope so. So for the most part I'm doing well. Yay! Weighing in on Wednesday hopefully, so I won't forget. - Jill |
