I think moodymomma has the right idea. Go completely over the top with it:

"I'm a vegetarian because I hate vegetables. Smarmy little bastards, growing wherever they please, ignoring my right to walk wherever I want to. They deserve to be ripped from the ground and eaten like the losers they are!"

or

"I'm a meat addict and trying to stay clean. The last time I had a hamburger, it got pretty ugly. I couldn't stop, and before I knew it, half of my third-grade class was burger meat and the rest were running for their lives."

I'm not a vegetarian, but I was for several years, and I found that people who were inclined to be jerks weren't looking for reasonable debate: They just wanted to ridicule me for being different. If you find people who truly want to debate with you, by all means, go for it.

hahahaha

Ummm-so I HATE McDonalds anyway but those sneaky devils tricked me back with there fruit and walnut salads with gelatin-free yogurt and the Asian salad. However-be warned-the NEWMAN'S SOUTHWEST dressing is NOT vegetarian. Read the label!

So-my purpose here today is to simply get people to list surprise non-veggie foods.

It may be old news but gelatin is a pork product (mcd's shakes, Skittles, Starburst, Ice breaksers gum, etc...)

Please add as many foods as you can so that people can just glance at the list and know where NOT to eat and when they must eat at cetain places, they know what NOT to eat. Thanks!

Mcdonalds is Satan anyways. Did you know even the fries contain beef by-products?
Taco Bell, here I come! (Beans instead of meat, hold the cheese/sour cream, possibly add rice/potatoes/hot sauce)

I really like gimme lean brand soy hamburger and sausage, it comes in a tube and is very sticky and pliable just like real raw ground meat. It would definitely work better for making meatballs than the crumbly fake ground beef that you usually see.

Agreed! I'm vegan, and the Morningstar Farms does NOT work for fake meatballs (although perhaps I could use really soft mashed kidney beans as a binder). It also makes a good "meat"loaf

Honestly, I don't like taking the time to deal with the stupidity of "omg eat meat" debates. Last time someone gave me a hard time, I told them, "Go back to the stone-age, Neanderthal meat-eater."

I get migraines (with aura) but it's not from my veganism, as I have always had them, and it is genetic. Actually, I get far fewer migraines than anyone else in my family, so I suspect my diet helps with my migraines, doesn't cause them.

Of course it does. Flesh of any animal is meat.

Here here! The rule of thumb I use is, "Did an animal die for this/Is it a dead animal? Yes? Then it's meat!" ::stamps "not veggie" on it and asks for more beans:: ;)

I never knew about gelatin, but I didn't really read tons of sites when becoming vegetarian(Dec07) and I am also only a kid. I guess I will have to find out what all those scientific words mean so I can make sure not to eat anything that an animal had to do for. Haha this will make my mom so mad ..... .__.''

(I know my vitamins don't have it atleast)

Maybe you should read a ton of sites or books, hun. It would really help you out, trust me. I've been vegetarian for 12 years (vegan for three), and reading up and learning the complicated ingredients really helped. I also stumbled across a lot of good recipes along the way.

Make sure you track your nutrition carefully until you get a good feel for what you need. Also, consider buying nutritional yeast (yellow powder. tastes nuttyish, from health food stores) for B12.

Vegetarian Gelatin: Veg or not? May 05 2008

I vote not veggie-friendly on gelatin. After all, why would you eat the bones/hooves but not the meat?

Vegetarian from a vegan May 05 2008
14:46 (UTC)

Eating gelatin is tantamount to eating meat, but many people do not realize what gelatin really is. I've even heard some people say, "I thought it was fluffy sugar?" (seriously) The people who say gelatin isn't veggie and then eat stuff with it in it may not realize what they're eating contains it. Maybe let them know? Stuff like that is why I almost never take someone's word on "oh it's vegetarian" and always read labels. I don't point fingers, however, and call out, "you're not one of us!" If a vegetarian honestly doesn't know, I'll gladly tell them. Lots of people really don't know where it comes from, and most people stop eating gelatin once I tell them what it is (even meat-eaters..gross-out factor from gnawing on bones).

Peanut Butter Pie

  • 16 oz. soft tofu
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. soy milk
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 unbleached, 9-inch chocolate crust, chilled

Combine all the filling ingredients in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Spoon into the pie shell. Refrigerate at least 2 hours and serve. Preparation time: 20 minutes Chilling time: 2 hours

I like to melt vegan chocolate over it.

Also, if you freeze then thaw tofu, it takes on a chicken consistency. Try mashing it and pan-fry it. Add taco seasoning. It's yummy vegan tacos!

Vegetarian How long have you been a vegetarian? WHY? May 05 2008

I'm 24 years old, and I've been vegetarian for 12 years. Vegan for three. Why? Well, a lot of reasons. First is the whole animal rights/harm none thing (I'm Wiccan/Pagan). I dislike how the meat industry treats animals and the environment. Meat (and animal products) are unnecessary and, often times, unhealthy as well. Yes, I know they have vitamins (but so does cheesecake), but one can get them from other sources easily.

I'd be eating a lot more than that if I were you!

We have pretty similar states - I'm 5 foot 8, atm 151 and aiming to get down to 133. Also carry my weight on my thighs and hips which I hate.

Anyway, I eat 2000 calories a day and lose1 and a bit pounds on that a week, though I'm cutting to 1800 to lose a bit more before the prom. Mind you I am very active, but I'd up to at least 1500 if I were you, when I ate 1200 cals a day I lost 5 pounds a week, when I stopped I gained it all back...

Well the thing is, I'm pretty much forced to be sedentary at the moment, which is why I have it so low. Reason I'm forced sedentary is because I got into a car accident; I broke my pelvis and am confined to a wheelchair for a few months. I'm not losing 5 pounds a week so don't worry. I've actually been losing a pretty healthy about-2 a week.  I also use a nutrition tracker to make sure I won't drop dead from malnourishment.

Carolina: I too wish I was as low as you. I'm 5'9". I got up to 325 lbs but am now 180lbs. My goal is 135lbs. What does the CC recommend for your caloric intake? If you go too low, your metabolism will slow down. It recommended 1225 to me.

dayummy- I keep telling myself the same thing, that some day something will give and the weight will start melting off! Until that day it's so hard not to get frustrated!

slainna- congrats on the awesome weight loss to date! keep up the good work! as for me, i wouldn't mind if it was just the occasional plateau, but you've got to lose something to begin with to HAVE a plateau. I can't even get that far! I've got about 60-70 lbs to lose so it's not just those that few stubborn lbs. But none of it will come off at all. What's a girl to do???

kashicat- considering I have about 70 lbs to lose, the 1000 calorie deficit doesn't seem like it's too much. believe me, I've tried upping my calories, reducing my calories, zig-zagging my calories. You name it, I've tried it. As far as my cardio, I do try to incorporate some interval training. I use the interval program that both the elliptical and treadmill have built in. I feel like I get a really good workout, but I will certainly look into the HIIT training and give it a shot! A typical day for me is either steel cut oats w/fruit and skim milk or an egg sandwich made with a thomas' light whole grain english muffin, 2 slices canadian bacon, one egg, and a slice of 2% american cheese. Lunch is tuna fish or a turkey and lite swiss sandwich, every once in a while a lean cuisine. I try to limit those as I know they are loaded with sodium. Also a piece of fruit. Dinner is usually either grilled chicken and veggies, or some form of lean protein with a veggie. I'll snack on string cheese or natural almonds. Sorry this is so long. I just know that as far as eating and exercising go, I've made significant improvements and should be seeing some sort of results!

It's just frustrating when it happens, ya know? What are you doing and how long have you been doing it for?

Oh, people are cruel alright, but it's not just children. I've suffered because of being fat at the hands of adults as well. A grown man I know used to "moo" at me and refer to my hands/feet as "hooves". I had gotten it from people ever since I hit puberty and my metabolism fell through the floor, and I gained a ton of weight. I didn't like to admit it, but it hurt. It may have not been the answer, but I got fed up and beat the crap out of a few kids I knew growing up because they were mean to me about my weight. My highest weight was 325 lbs. I'm not 185lbs (which is out of the obese category for 5'9" but still "overweight"). Though I'm technically "chubby" now, I still feel like the fat girl, and perhaps I always will because I spent so long morbidly obese it's hard to think of myself any other way. I admire the people who have gone through the hell that is obesity and still have faith in humanity.
