Hi -- Remember me anyone? It's been months since I've posted and months since I've logged my eating habits and - guess what - I've gained about 8-10 lbs. over the past 4 months. Ugh. I am in danger of not fitting into the smaller clothes I've gotten! Yikes! Sounds like you all have kept better on track, and are inspiring me. Thanks. I've been having workplace stress, but that's no real excuse. I just can't lose unless I track. So I am going to make a fresh start. It's not that I've gone crazy eating, but eating a bit more & exercising a bit less really does let the pounds pile back on! Sorry for being scarce - hope you don't mind my joining back in! Pat |

I had haddock when I was on my trip. Delicious! Firm, white fish, very mild. Yeah, I walked there, but not since I've been home. :( Gotta get back on the straight & narrow! Fingers crossed for you, Ann! |

Hey everybody! Sorry I've been out of touch... I did go away for a few days - met my SIL in Chicago for a girls' weekend (or, more accurately, a middle-aged women's weekend). I have no sisters, and I love my SIL dearly, though we live half a continent apart (she's in Wyoming, I'm in Virginia). Went to the symphony (I will deny to my death that I had micro-dozes during the last piece!) walked a LOT, went to art museums, ate really great food. It's something we talked about for a long time & finally did it. Gotta admit, my health issues kind of spurred me on to get it done. It was only three days, but so good to be away. Ann, sorry you're not feeling well, I hope you find out what's going on. Be insistent that you find out - don't let the docs blow it off. BEB, wow, glad you're still in your place, I wish I had any wisdom to share about what to do with your son. I admire your cheerfulness! (btw, regarding your last post, I had a chance to try fiddleheads in Chicago but chickened out - never ate ferns before) Nancy67, four years per relationship? I should have gone through 6 DHs by now! I do change hobbies about that often, though. Gardening, knitting, jewelry making, needlework, etc., etc. Chris, it's been pretty here too, gotta love it. Monica, welcome. Good people here. Just stick to it. I am losing really slowly right now, but I think it's ok. Better than going the other way, right?

Hi everyone - just checking in. I just got a new thyroid prescription, increasing because my levels are still too low. Of course, my thought is that it will help the weight loss (I hope!) I still think it has helped with my mild depression. BEB (like that!) - you had a question about milk. I think if you search milk & soy milk on this site you'll find what you need. We use the soy milk on cerealat our house, and it's good. I'm not fond of it straight up, though. I haven't been able to log on much lately, but you all are in my thoughts! |

Pretty quiet around here! I have had a really busy weekend - even played matchmaker & went out with the pair I matched up! Didn't get yard work done, but made a tote bag (cute!) & cut out another for my SIL. I have reached a new low weight (yay!) so I feel pretty darn sassy right about now! Happy Monday, everybody! |

Off-topic alert!!! Yesterday I bought some Bolthouse Farms yogurt-based salad dressings. I tried the caesar-parmesan last night. OMG, is it ever good! Much less fat than regular dressing, and not too high in sodium! I may start craving salad again! |

Nancy, even with the most responsible kid it's scary to let them behind the wheel. I think you are wise to wait until he's ready for the responsibility. Ro, I have some old Leslie Sansone walking videos. You've inspired me to get them out again! (I've never made very much on a garage sale - congrats!) |

Hey everyone - I have been off the site for a couple of days and missed lots of posts. Trying to catch up...Welcome back, Ann (Napoli) Last week we went out to dinner & I gained about 3+ lbs. Of course the overnight weight gain takes a whole week or more to lose. So far I've lost 2. Grrr. Why is it so easy to gain & so hard to lose????? Thanks, Ann, for asking about the medical test. Seems to have gone ok, the nurse called & said so, but the dr was out of town this week, so I'm supposed to be getting a letter from him this week. I hope your job is going well. Anyone have a cure for waking up in the middle of the night? I am consistently waking up at about 3 a.m. and having a lot of trouble going back to sleep. I worry about anything that I can imagine. It is ridiculous. Then I go to sleep an hour or so later and wake up for work exhausted. No tennis match this week, just practice tomorrow. Thanks for the kudos everybody. Nancy 56, my younger DS is 16 too. Edit: Took out something that didn't come out sounding the way I intended.....

Hey everyone, hope you had a good weekend. I haven't weighed myself today, and I am dreading going to the doc tomorrow for another stress test, because I will get weighed on the blasted scale there. (tho I am pretty sure I've lost a couple of lbs since I was there 2 months ago) Played the first tennis match of the season today (I'm on a ladies weekend team) and my partner & I won! It was a real nail-biter - I'm glad we hung in there. Oh, and our opponents were easily 15+ yrs younger than my partner and me. Did I say that I'm kind of full of myself at the moment? Welcome all new folks! Jump right in, the water's fine. |

Hey all- Beth, good news for you! That's gotta feel good! Meena, I always thought a regular old Pepsi made me feel better with a hangover. Something about the sugar & cola syrup I think. Kim (& NancyC), I agree with Ann & Chris. We're ganging up on you now I have another nuclear stress test Monday, I'm trying not to think about it, but just got a phone reminder from the doc's office.... The last one turned out fine, but the doc wants to be cautious, and I appreciate that. I also have to go back & get thyroid re-tested. ugh. |

Good for you, Ann!!!! Glad to hear your good news! **throwing confetti** Chris, it is so confusing trying to figure out what's what when the researchers are always disproving last week's theories, you know? Coffee's good, then bad, then good again, etc., etc. Kim, best wishes for your dd and the baby. It sounds like they've been thinking straight about what to do when the time comes, and that's great. I've been noticing the lip lines too, and they distress me. I attribute them to too much whistling. In the car whenever I'm not humming or singing I'm whistling. I'm a pretty noisy driver, all in all. I wish I could just get the lips reinflated, lol. If you find the magic potion, please let me know!!!! Hey, awhy is it that men never get those things, I want to know. Maybe we women should have been shaving the upper lip all these years.... |

Ann, I hope you're feeling more like yourself soon. Meena, you crack me up. Hope that cake was good. I love the idea of the outdoors, but I like hearing the birds & smelling the fresh air from inside, being totally honest. Creme brulee -- I think it's basically whipped cream that is put in a flat bowl, covered with sugar, and then blow torched. Literally. (brulee is French for burned). They burn the sugar to make it golden & crispy. You have to break through the hardened sugar to get to the creamy stuff underneath. There is no redeeming nutritional value, but it is very tasty stuff. Nancy C- I'm with Meena. Shouldn't your ex be overseeing this? And if not, I thought of the photo idea too. Or if you can twist your son's arm far enough, just have him write a real letter to the folks. I bet they'd like that better than any "thing". Hey to everyone else, have a great day~ |

I don't fall asleep every time I sit still for an hour. I don't snore (maybe those two things are related!) My feet are getting smaller too (lost 30#) I fit into restaurant booths that were too snug to be comfortable before (so embarrassing)

Very impressive, Ro! Alyson, that snow storm sounds beautiful. So we went out last nght and I ate (& drank) too much. I even ate a whole portion of creme brulee for dessert. It was nice, though. And I think I worked the bad stuff out this morning playing tennis. At least it feels that way. I hope you all have a great day! |

Welcome,glos2lv! I am dealing with the lurking menopause too. Ugh. You just never know what any month may bring! I have very conflicting feelings about whether I want it to actually hit or not... No HRT for me, but I can't say that I've done lots of research on the topic. DH had a very busy day working on a big last minute project and at the end of the day his client told him to take me out to a nice dinner and send him the bill. I say sure! Now we just have to figure out where to go...I know that I will play tennis in the morning, and I think I will throw caution to the wind tonight and have something tasty. Chris, no secret to the sleep, I guess I was just pooped! I am listening to the birds sing. Don't you just love spring? (sorry, Meena!)

I lost 30 too, and no one at work has said a word. People at church, who only see me weekly, have noticed. Most of all, I can feel a difference. Mladdy, you look great. Anyone who just saw the before & after would see the difference right away. Keep up the good work!!! |

Hey everyone! Ann, I hope the job thing works out for you. meena, you're blowing my mind with the reverse seasons! Aren't you moving to West Virginia, or do I have you confused with someone else? I have actually slept through the night for the past three days and woke with enough energy to exercise BEFORE work. Of course, by the time I get home I'm beat, but it sure is better than waking up at 3 and not getting back to sleep. Have been at one weight for the past 3-4 days, but also got TOM today, so I am hoping for a bit of a drop tomorrow or the next day. I guess that explains my cravings & insatiability in the past few days. I'm so irregular now that I never know for sure if it's hormones or just gluttony! NancyC, if I didn't say it before, I am so glad your boy is home. ((hug))

Puppykisses, I drove through Corolla twice yesterday -- went to drop off DS in Nags Head! Long drive - 3+ hours each way. We got home at about 10:30 and I hit the sack immediately. Tired all day today - from riding in a car! Doesn't make any sense, but it's true. Sorry about your accident. I don't have a big vehicle, and I don't think I'd ever be comfortable driving one. I've been having food cravings like crazy, I wish it would stop! But I did hit my official 30# loss mark on Friday, and it was still my weight today, so I'm happy about that. Ann, orzo is rice-shaped pasta. It's about the size of long grain rice, and quite yummy. I usually make it with lots of garlic and finely chopped vegetables., like zucchini, peppers, onions, etc. - oh, and parmesan cheese. |

Bonna, so sorry about the cataracts. This growing older business is not for wimps! For years we have celebrated every holiday with our best friends & their kids. We won't be together tomorrow, so I'm cooking dinner tonight (not diet food, but not horrible, I guess) Roast beef, asparagus, orzo with peas, sauteed mushrooms, and for dessert a yellow bundt cake (saving the calories by not frosting) with fresh strawberries & no fat whipped topping. Yum! Hope everyone likes it. Sadly, only one of the kids will be here, but life moves on. Nancyc, if you feel free when you leave church, maybe you haven't visited the right one yet! When you go & feel like you're home, then you're at the right place -- (Just my opinion. I stayed away for many years, but I'm glad that I returned about 15 years ago) Alyson, glad you got some sleep - I've been waking up at 3 am for the past several nights & unable to get back to sleep for an hour, creating tiredness in the afternoon. It turns into a vicious cycle. Happy day tomorrow, all! |

Congratulations! Mikelane, I have a question - what about a heart attack survivor whose total is less than 150? I had a mild one six months ago and now with diet & meds my total is a terrific 134. |

Nancy67, we will be in the car most of the day. :( We will go to church, where DH & I sing in the choir, and younger son is helping to accompany by playing trumpet. :) Then we are driving him to meet his friend at the beach for the remainder of his spring break. It's about 3 hrs each way, so we will be having car fatigue by the time we get home. On the other hand, we'll stop by the other son's college to have dinner with him. :) So that adds up to a happy face overall! :) Ann, those recipes sound great, I may try the British flapjacks tomorrow... djmommy, so glad you are feeling better! Pam, welcome! Pat

NancyC - Done! Hugs to you! Chris, as Mary mentioned, adding butter instead of shortening (or in place of some) will make them flatten out. I have a book that talks about the chemistry of cooking and the author does all kinds of experiments on things like that. And I'm rather geeky in that I like to read that kind of thing. |

NancyC - Thoughts are with you & your son. Chris, how are things with your daughter? Looking up, I hope? Regarding the BMR, I think it's very confusing. Hadn't heard that 7 times your weight formula, but I agree, Chris, if it gets to be less than 1200 you have to stick to the 1200. But the author deals with a lot of really big folks. There's got to be an outside (high) limit, too, or a 400 lb person would be "legally" eating 2800 cals/day to lose! Honestly, I do not know what's wrong with me, I have been overeating and underexercising -- maybe it's hormonal. I will say that, since starting on thyroid meds I am feeling much less depressed. I don't know if it's a placebo effect or not, and I don't care, as long as I feel better! Off to church choir tonight, lots of music for holy week - we have a service on Thursday as well as Easter. |

Ann, the way i understand it (and I'm no expert!) you just want to eat something like your BMR to lose weight. What you actually burn if you are sedentary is like 1.2 times your BMR. You would not want to eat this much to lose, but it should help you maintain. At least that's my understanding. Eating that much may take a while to lose weight, but it is supposed to not mess up your metabolism like doing way restrictive calories. Does that make sense? There are probably lots of threads on weight loss forum that would explain it better than I did. Agh - I missed my Tuesday tennis to go pick up DS. Good thing I love him a lot! Now I have to go get on the bike for a while as I watch Biggest Loser. I have been neglecting the exercise a bit lately, I'm afraid....

Gosh, so tired, need to get to bed, but I haven't posted today, and wanted to check what's going on. Went with a friend and my son to a symphony performance -- Verdi's Requiem-- soooo good! Perfect for Holy Week. Sorry I can't coherently comment on all that's going on with you all, but you're in my thoughts......

Hey Meena, welcome back! Ann, here's a link to a BMR calculator: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ The BMR is what you burn doing absolutely nothing. Check the weight loss forums for discussions, there are many. Ann,I love the "scrumptious" description! NancyC, I haven't read your journal, but I wish you and your son well. Pat

Ann, sorry to hear your news. My best friend recently lost her job because of company reorganization and is at a loss for where to go from here. I hope you will land in a better place quickly, and that you prevail in your request for redundancy pay (not familiar with that term here). I won't be going to NYC for the fabulous haircut any time soon, that is a dream of mine, but maybe I can make that my payoff when I finally reach my goal weight! I have been losing weight really slowly, and I am trying out the theory I have read about on cc that you should eat your BMR (for me, at current wieght, about 1700). I won't go out on a limb yet, but I think it actually may work. I was at my lowest today, and I think I will keep this up for the next few days to see what happens. I had been keeping the eating at about 1500 or so. We'll see. Have a great Saturday, all! |
