For me it depends on where I'm walking and what time of year.  If I try to walk in my neighborhood chances are I will be interupted by people wanting to chat or worse they say they'll join me and then they are either slower or they stop every 5 minutes.  I love to walk on a trail in a county park near my house cause I don't usually see anyone I know.  Right now, the sidewalks in my neck of the woods are  just ice covered and it does make the whole process of walking verrrrry dangerous.  I figure if I break a leg -my walking days will be over for a long time!

We have an exercise room set up in our downstairs and that is where my treadmill, recumbant bike and weight machine live.  My hubby put in a surround sound stereo, and hung up a T.V. with a dvd/cd player.  So, I just walk the tread during the time I would be laying on my butt watching my favorite shows or a sports event (love those hockey games, Red Wings fan!).    A lot of the time I just crank up my favorite tunes and "tune out" during my 1 - 1.5 hour workout time downstairs.  Everyone knows that the house better be on fire if they come knockin on the door.

So, I figure that the ambience is everything and for some folks it is nature, for some it is a crowded gym and for some it is peace and quiet and alone time.  I will say that I get in some real quality "thinking" time while walking the tread.

Don't beat yourself up for days you just don't feel like it.  It seems to me that if I workout for a few days in a row - it is the day off where I feel like I've lost weight.

Your body needs reset days and you need them to keep your attitude good and your committment strong.  Just get back at it tomorrow.

Also, try to do mini-challenges on some days to change up the workouts.  Like do 20 arm circles, 20 leg lifts, 20 crunches, 20 legkicks.   Keep track of these "little" workouts and at least you will feel like you've accomplished something and are making progress even on your off days.  Get a list of these kinds of exercises for your "off" days.

Sabine,

I bought a 15 lb. Turkey and I do what pattikins said.  Rub it down with paprika, salt and pepper or any herbs, seasonings that sound good.  Saute some onion and celery (in olive oil) and place it in the oven bag. Put a couple of tablespoons of flour in the bag as well and then put the turkey in.  I use a Nesco roaster and cook it for 3.5 to 4 hours for the 15 lb. bird or until a meat thermometer register 180 in the thigh.

Oh, and I stuff it with a homemade wild rice stuffing.  I got all these recipes on Allrecipes.com just type in turkey and stuffing to the search.  It is a great resource for all kinds of cooking.

5'6" tall and graduated at 112 pounds.  I was very thin and very happy with my body but I did think my thighs and behind were a little floppy even then.

In college I gained my freshman 15 and when I got married I was 123 lbs., size five.  After the first baby I was 135, the next 160 and then the twins 200.  After my second thyroid surgery I balloned up to 260 and I am working back down from there using this website.

My own reflection still suprises me - even though it's been years since I was at a reasonable weight.  My first goal is to be able to buy clothes in the regular women's department not the plus sizes even if I am in the biggest of the normal sizes I will know I have accomplished a lot.

It is fun - and the kids remember all the turkeys we've had by name.  They just reminded me about Bruce - he was kinda uptight looking; Winnie - shaped like Winnie-the-Pooh; and the menancing but lovable turkey - Tony Soprano.

I am going to be home from work tomorrow.  Plan on taking Rocky for a two-mile walk in the neighborhood (weather permitting).  Then, when my husband gets home from work I'll lie and tell him Rocky still needs his walk.  He'll feel guilty and we'll all go to town for our usual evening constitutional and window shopping.

This way everyone is happy - Rocky is totally happy and exercised,  I am totally happy and exercised, my poor husband will at least be exercised.  His work has been so stressful lately and a lot of nights he gets home late and prefers napping or vegging out in front of the tv.  I don't blame him but he needs some exercise and fresh air - I'm afraid for his health if he doesn't keep moving some.   He never has time for working out and this is all he gets.  A couple of months ago a guy he worked with had a heart attack at work.  It freaks me out!

I noticed that the calorie count on my home treadmill is lower than the estimate on cc.  I like theirs better.  My machine has me burning about 325 calories in 45 minutes with varying inclines and varying speeds (average about 5 miles/hr).  I usually run for a bit and then slow it down and I also adjust the incline and walk briskly on a steep incline for 5 minutes.  It feels like I should be burning more than the 325 that is listed on the machine.  CC plus says more like 600 but I was wondering which was correct as well.  The mileage I usually do is 3 - 3.5 in 45 minutes.  It can be confusing!

I can't imagine giving up my cheese. Like others have written - switch to Light versions of cream cheese and stick to the Tablespoon serving size.

I usually eat 2 small slices of sharp cheddar with an apple or banana for snack - again the key is serving size. I share it with my dog who is a cheese addict.

I use all low fat versions of shredded cheeses and low fat Feta in salads and recipes when I want that taste. I love Greek salad but I noticed restaurants sometimes really pile on the Feta. I just pull some of it off before I dig in so it is not more than 2 tablespoons - usually someone else with me wants to eat it. I also bring my own spray mist dressing with me in my purse - helps with those dressing calories.

Thanks for your reply.  I hadn't considered parathyroid issues - after the surgery they told me my calcium levels were fine and no one has looked into it since.  It could be a problem because I actually had two surgeries- the first a subtotal that left only a tiny bit of gland.  Unfortunately the thing grew back and it was wrapping around my esophagus necessitating a second (much more risky surgery).  It makes sense that something got damaged or nicked up after all of that.

I do take Armour Thyroid 2 grains and also Levothroid (to boost T4).  My last TSH level was 1.31 and I finally feel good after all this time (second surgery in 2000).

I just don't know why I can't seem to budge the scale.  My clothes fit better - due to a lot of working out - but I fight with the same 5-10 lbs. on the scale.  Since I need to lose 100 lbs. I am getting very frustrated and anxious.  My gyn tested me for insulin resistance but that came back negative.

It does seem likely that some of this could be thyroid related.  I will try to lower the TSH again but too much lower and I also get anxious and heart palps.  I like to keep T3 and T4 in upper range of normal and last test it was there.  Like I said I feel a ton better but after a couple of months on this dose I was hoping for more progress.

I have also heard that if you workout vigorously you will potentially need more thyroid hormone.  I will check back in with doctor after 6 months and see if I need an adjustment as well.

Thanks for the info.  When I was hyperthyroid I lost 60 lbs in a short amount of time but I felt like I was going to die.  After the surgeries I gained 100 pounds and even though I physically feel better now - I know I can look and feel better than this - once I get into my "zone".

Weight on 11/11/07:  263

Highest weight ever:  268

First mini goal:  250

Ultimate weight loss goal:  140

plan:  Calorie count plus logs.  Low glycemic/smart carb based diet.  Cut portions in half (esp. in restaurants).  No more bread baskets on the table!  Workout, Workout, Workout, walk the dog.  Fidget more (I'm good at that).  Drink more water.  Replace items in recipes (ex. plain yogurt for sour cream, whole wheat pasta for white, brown rice for white).  Eat breakfast - oatmeal/ high fiber cereal.  Lots of fruits and veggies ( have a veggie steamer and it is great).  Never grocery shop hungry and shop at produce market first!

I'm sick of looking like I'm still carrying twins - very embarrassing now that they are 15 years old!

Fitness Winter and how can I get used to the cold? Nov 10 2007

Ohio,

I don't even try to get out on the very cold and windy days.  It is not the cold temps but the whipping wind that gets me.  I have a treadmill and exercise bike/weight machine in my basement.  We hung a tv and have a stereo and I look forward to going down and having my "alone" time downstairs.

I do have to take my dog out for walks no matter the weather but in winter a lot of days we cut it short and really bundle up with layered clothing to go ( 20 minutes is a limit).  In these cold climates there's just some days (esp. when the ice builds up on the sidewalks) that it is absolutely dangerous to walk outside.

I just try to do what I can, and really workout inside for Jan. Feb and March when it is just brutal.  It would be great to just fly South like the birds for the winter - but the family and employer would not like this too much.

Good Luck and stay warm,

Michigan

Penny is adorable.  How do you get her to keep the coat on?  Rocky just paws his sweater off and then he chews on it.  I think dogs look so cute with outfits and he just won't cooperate.  Reminds me of my boys when they were little - they kept peeling off their clothes and running around in their diapers.

I love the idea of taking Rocky on the treadmill.  He is so energetic that he might just go for it - I just wish the belt were longer.  It might be fun to hang a piece of cheese of the front bar and watch him run for it and not get anywhere.  Dogs are so fun to tease!

Weight Loss Exercising or Dieting: Which One is Easier? Nov 09 2007

I love the exercising - it is the dieting I find much harder.  I cook for a family of 6 - 3 teen age boys so the food requirements in my house is just more, more, more.  The kids always groan about mom's "health nut" foods.

They are very active kids 1 football player, 1 basketball player and 1 lacrosse player.  My daughter is in soccer so they all come home hungry.  My husband and I are both thyroid patients and we would certainly have more salad only nights without the kids.  We do o.k. in limiting portions for ourselves and we try to fill up on the salad but I think it will be easier for me somewhere down the road.  I have replaced a lot of ingredients in favorite recipes (for ex. plain yogurt for sour cream and if I am sufficiently sneaky they just don't notice).

I have an execise room in my house with a hanging tv and surround sound stereo.  I have a recumbant bike, a treadmill and a weight machine.  I love going down there and look forward to it as "me" time.  I put the music on loud and just shut out everything else for an hour.  I also use this room for yoga and I hope to get a mini tramp for rebounding.

Weight Loss Thyroid issues Nov 09 2007

I have had two thyroid surgeries, the last removed the entire gland (Hashimoto's disease).    It has taken me almost 8 years to really get optimized on the meds and I think I finally have it licked.

I don't know which drug you are on but a lot of thyroid patients do not feel as energetic or alert unless they take a drug with T3 as well as T4 in it.  Synthroid and its generics only provide the T4 (which in theory should convert to T3 but in my case my body just didn't do the job).  I take both Armour Thyroid (natural dessicated- which has all the T's) and to boost the T4 I also take Levothroid.  Some people take the Synthroid and then add a T3 only drug (like Cytomel).

It really is a delicate balance and in my experience you need to keep the TSH down to a lower level as well as having T3 and T4 in the upper range of normal.  This can take a long time and while you are not optimized you can certainly have the weight gain, lethargy, bloating, exercise intolerance, muscle aches and foggy head etc.  It can be hard to find a doctor who will treat you based on symptoms and how YOU feel instead most just go by whether you test in a specific lab range.  The lab range can be as high as 5.5 for TSH .  For most people I have networked with - numbers this high cause them symptoms of hypothyroidism.  I feel the symptoms if I creep higher than 1.  Some people do o.k. up to 3 or 4 but no higher.

Since I brought my TSH down to 1- I finally have the energy and I am finally seeing results on my diet/workout regimen. I found the About.com Thyroid board moderated by Mary Shomon to be a great resource.  There is so much information and you can network with so many other people who have been in this boat.  This board is the only thing that kept me sane for a long time while I fought this disease.  There is a lot of info about diet/weight loss as well.

I am still finding that even with a careful diet and a vigorous workout program it is still hard to budge that scale.  I don't think I am using thyroid as an excuse as the proper functioning of this gland is vital for your metabolism.  That being said it is even more important when you have thyroid issues to be vigilant about your diet and exercise to stay healthy and fit.  When you don't feel well and are tired and achy it is too easy to sit on the couch and eat and sleep.  Good Luck and I will add you as a friend -  we have a lot in common.

Yep - Terriers in general I think are the most stubborn animals on the planet.  Airedales are even more difficult because they are the biggest terriers.

When I had my big boy Rudy (100 pounds) it was like the elephant jokes - he sort of ran his own show.

Rocky has a great lineage - he is from a working line of dogs that were rescue and tracking dogs in the Alps.  I'm afraid that we have him so spoiled in our house that the only tracking he does is for his favorite treats!  He loves cheese and we always joke that if a burglar breaks in to our house carrying cheese - he would have no problem with Rocky.

Is your horse very stubborn?  I knew people who had big horses and a couple of them were absolutely obstinate - they showed some them at the State Fair but didn't dare take the sassy ones.  They also had one that was half donkey - that one was very stubborn as well - it liked to chew on your hair.

Chasing cats all over your house certainly counts as human-pet exercise.  What naughty things do they do?

When my husband lived at home many years ago his brother found a stray cat that they named Fred.  Fred ended up being quite the hussy and she kept getting pregnant.  I remember several litters of these adorable but very naughty kittens.

The one year there were 7 kittens and they all ran up the Christmas tree and knocked ornaments and light bulbs down.  Finally his mother put an ad in the paper that said "Free to good home - beautiful pregnant cat."  A lady answered the ad and was so happy because she had promised all her friends kittens but did not have a pregnant cat!  It takes all kinds to make the world go round.

Keep chasing the kittys - remember the burn meter!

It is amazing how good our pets are for our health - I have to keep up with my Airedale and that is hard - they're not called "Airedale Terrors" for nothing.  He is so very active.

My old Airedale, Rudy, was over 100 pounds.  He was just a big, big boy.  The problem was he tore his ACL when he was pretty young and the surgery just didn't do the trick for him.  He ended up tearing his other ACL in time and he had a harder time walking.  He was a much mellower dog than this one.

Rocky is the standard size Airedale - 48 pounds and he just has tons of energy.  I can do the brisk walking but any running has to be with my kids - and they are always in training for one sport or another.

I will post a Rocky pic when I get some to upload.  Our computer crashed recently and the pics are loaded on a disk and have to be put back on.

I love Mini Shnauzers and Yorkies too.  My mom's Yorkie, Monty, lived to 20 years old!

Chelsea,

Do you live where winters are hard?  We live in Michigan and I am not looking forward to bad weather.  Rocky is very strong and he can be a handful (esp. if he sees another dog).  When the sidewalks are ice covered we don't dare take him on his usual walk for fear of breaking a leg or something else.  Also, the bitter cold and wind takes it toll for months on end.  I try to still get him out  - we will go to a park and walk on the snow but it bums me out when winter really gets its grip.  I was thinking that someone should invent a dog-walking treadmill (like on the Jetsons cartoon) so we could still get our daily exercise in spite of the weather.

Thanks for keeping this thread going 2beitty.  I love hearing about all the pets out there who are benefitting from their people trying to stay healthy.  I know that if I am just tired and I want to veg - Rocky will run to his get his leash and he lays it on his back and he jumps right on me.  When he gets his eyes all bright and his ears all perky there is no way I can say no.  Having a dog makes a big difference for me as it means that I have to move.

We walk Rocky in our town - which is a really cute place.  It looks a lot like Stars Hollow if you were a Gilmore Girls fan.  We walk up and down the sidewalks and window shop.  The bookstore allows dogs to come in and get a bone from a basket on the counter.  There is also a dog bakery where people on leashes are welcome (I don't know about horses). A lot of store owners will put out treats and water bowls for the dogs as so many people walk their dogs in town.  I am glad they are not putting out people treats as I would have a hard time with that oneCool

I love hearing about the mini horse and the bunnies as well.  My son has a friend that walks an iguana - it freaks out the dogs.  How much does your little horse eat?

I have a lot of Eastern European relatives.  The ironic thing is that when I was younger and very thin they used to poke at me and tell me how awful I looked and that I needed to eat something.  They told me I'd have "poor blood."  Now that I have gained a lot of weight the same ones poke at me and tell me how I "blew up" and how I should lose weight.  They will offer me all kinds of food and then shake their heads if I take any.  Of course, if I don't they are offended.  Go figure!

I agree with Kairi - if this continues for more than a couple of weeks I would get bloodwork and check for thyroid problems.  Make sure they check TSH, free T3 and T4 and antibodies.  Also adrenal problems and anemia can be indicated with prolonged fatigue.

My first indication of thyroid disease was this terrible exhausation along with weight gain.  Not long after this, I couldn't swallow and had the worst anxiety in the world along with the insomnia. Nothing is worse than being so fatigued but you can't sleep!

Hi,

I'm new to this forum as well.  I too have 4 kids - 21, 17 and 14 year old twins.  I also have had two thyroid surgeries and no longer have a thyroid gland.  Since my second surgery I have gained almost 100 pounds.  I have been trying on my own to lose the weight and lifestyle changes such as much improved diet and daily exercise seem to only get me about 10 pound loss.

Like other posters I used to be a very thin person.  I told the doctor recently that it feels like I have somebody sitting on my lap.  In recent years I changed the way I carry fat - from the back end now to the belly.  It's been a very discouraging struggle and I am hoping to learn a lot about ways to jumpstart my metabolism.
