| Weight Loss | Calories-to-fat? | Aug 07 2008 03:12 (UTC) |

Your body is constantly converting fats into sugars and vice versa. Thats just how the body works and you shouldn't worry about it. Its normal! However, it takes several hours for a meal to even digest and the "calories" (sugars, fats, etc) to be absorbed. And even then, the fat is initially stored in your liver for quick consumption when you need it. I'm not well-versed enough in human physiology, but I can tell you that fats are not immediately deposited into the adipose (fat) cells upon consumption.

Drinking plenty of water is essential when working out to prevent dehydration, but I'm not sold on the idea of 8 glasses a day. The 8 glasses a day has no scientific basis. In fact, it arose out of WWI when the military was trying determine the water ration for the soldiers. Recent studies have shown that, in fact, being slightly dehydrated is alright. Now, drinking 8 glasses a day won't hurt you, but don't be fooled into thinking its a miracle cure. The best rule of thumb is to drink when you are thirsty (unless you are exercising, in which case drink BEFORE you get thirsty).

| Regarding your insomnia, have you tried taking melatonin? Its the hormone your pineal gland secretes to regulate sleep patterns. I'm a mild insomniac and have found that it really helps when trying to get to sleep at night. The great thing is that it doesn't make you drowsy in the morning like Tylenol PM does to me. You should be able to get it at the supplement isle at your local wal-mart, et al. | |||

| Given the water content of cooked rice and all the air pockets between the grains of rice I doubt there would be much of a difference between using a liquid measuring cup vs a dry ingredient measuring cup, Being the "tweaker" I am when it comes to cooking, I tend to use a dry measuring cup for everything and "tweak" the liquid/dry ingredients if they aren't quite right. | |||

You shouldn't have any trouble handling bike riding. When I started my diet, I weighed 274, and regularly rode my bike around campus during the semester. Since then, I've lost 44 pounds and I'm down to 230. As long as you take it slow at first, it shouldn't be too bad. What are you actually hesitant about? Being able to ride, or your weight in regards to the bike? If the former, you know the saying: "Crawl before you walk, walk before you run." Don't try to go out and ride 10k on your first trip -- you'll likely fail. Take it easy and enjoy it. If its the latter, just make sure you get a decent bike (NOT a Wal-Mart bike, trust me!). Make it an investment and go to your local bike shop and buy an entry-level Trek (Trek 4300 is very nice - costs ~$350). You might want to see if your class has bikes that you can use before you invest in a bike, though, in case you find out that cycling isn't for you. I think if you go slowly and don't overextend yourself from the beginning you will find cycling to be a very enjoyable form of exercise. Beats the heck out of walking any day! |

Keep in mind that not all sugars are created equal. There are literally thousands of types of sugars, of which glucose, sucrose, fructose, and lactose are the most common. I'm by no means a biochemistry professional or nutritionist, but you should keep in mind that any sugar other than glucose must be metabolized (broken down - requires energy) into smaller sugars (ultimately to glucose) before its energy can be extracted. To put all this in perspective, 1 medium carrot (78g) has around 6g of sugar in it. As long as you stay away from so-called "processed" sugar, you shouldn't need to worry too much about it. |

| Health & Support | Messed up metabolism due to excessive dieting.. | Oct 23 2007 00:25 (UTC) |

One sure fire way to bring your metabolism back up is to start exercising and slowly raising your caloric intake. Actually, you might want to slowly raise your caloric intake before starting an exercise regime. It sounds like your body is in starvation mode, which means it has slowed its metabolism to the absolute minimum and utilizes every chance it gets to put gain fat. By slowly increasing your caloric intake over the course of 2 to 3 or 4 weeks, you are avoiding the sudden shock your body would experience if you immediately upped your intake (which would lead to rapid weight gain). Once your metabolism has sped up a bit and you are out of starvation mode, exercising should help boost your metabolism. The exercise doesn't have to be "excessive" so long as your "normal" eating habits don't include fast food for every meal, etc. |

| Health & Support | gaining? starvation mode | Oct 23 2007 00:17 (UTC) |
|
As long as you are burning the same number of calories every day as you consume, you won't lose or gain weight. Having said that, though, it might be pertinent to increase your caloric intake gradually so your body and slowly move out of starvation mode (if its in starvation mode), hopefully resulting in little or no gained weight. I would imagine you are in starvation mode, though, because if you have a calorie deficit from caloric intake alone, and then you add in the 700 calories burned in the gym, thats a huge deficit (your body is only getting 500 calories from food as it is).
I would think that slowly increasing caloric intake from 1200 to 1900 or so (so that you are effectively getting 1200 calories from food) over the course of a few weeks should do it. I dunno, though. |

I've always thought of the low carb/no carb diets as more of a fad diet. I understand the concept behind it, but it seems more difficult than a traditional "eat a balanced diet in moderation and exercise" to most people I've talked to. Simply put, your body is made to run off carbohydrates. I'd suggest getting some nice, whole grain bread (I love Arnold Flax n Fiber bread). It has both GOOD complex carbs, as well as a ton of fiber. Oatmeal is also great! Keeps me full for 3-4 hours in the morning, and I'm a big guy. |

I still run Windows most of the time), $1099 for a Macbook is cheap for how reliable, rugged, well made, well designed, and just down right sexy it is... especially when compared to similarly priced PC laptops. I kinda agree that Apple is over-hyped, but I've been building computers for years (and reinstalling Windows over... and over... and over again), and I will never consider a PC laptop over a Mac. And hey, if you don't like OS X, you can run Windows on your Mac, too! |

| Fitness | Sauna?? | Oct 22 2007 03:39 (UTC) |

Logically, there are two forces at work in the sauna. As the sauna heats you up, your body reduces the amount of calories that it burns to maintain body temperature. Conversely, as the sauna heats the body up, your body is both working harder to cool itself down, and any raise in actual body temperature would increase cellular metabolism, which would burn more calories. So you have something that looks like this: Total calories burned = (net difference in calories burned from raised cellular metabolism) + (calories burned as your body tries to cool itself down) - (calories saved from trying to maintain body temperature) Googling shows something like 300 calories during a 30 minute session. Of course, this is by no means an alternative to exercise. ;) |

And, even when I do drink, I really only like one beer. Hey Jessica, I'm in the same boat (only I'm a senior). I tend to be an introvert, and don't generally make new friends as readily as some others do. I really only have two sets of friends: those I made while in band in high school and my first two years of college, and those I've made as a member of Phi Alpha Theta (a history honorary club, not a frat ;) ). If I were you, I'd try to get involved in some campus activities. Is there a club for your major? If so, try joining it to make some friends. Or how about a study group for one of your classes? I know that some people find this strange, but it really is difficult for people like us to make friends in college (especially when you are only around a set of people for 3-5 hours a week total). |

drea99, I think she means she's on the exercise bike going 16mph on the moderate effort setting. Remember, bikes aren't just about speed, you have to factor in resistance. I read a good tip in an e-book. "If you aren't getting results with what you are doing, then you need a change." Are you getting any results? If not, then what you are doing obviously isn't working. If you aren't getting the results you are looking for fast enough, then upping your workouts might help, or it might not. Best thing is to try. If your results aren't improving after a week or two, then you will have an answer. |

| In the world of laptops, especially in the lower-end spectrum, you really do get what you pay for. A cheap laptop will last you a year or two, but a good one should last you 3-4 (unless you just throw it around and beat it with a hammer). I would suggest you try to save up $300 more and get an Apple Macbook. I've had mine for over a year and its still perfect. In contrast, my buddy's HP laptop, which cost $750 I believe, is practically falling apart after 2 years. Macbooks are simply amazing, and a very good deal when you compare them to similarly configured laptops from HP, Dell, Sony, etc. | |||

Ditto the lack of real nutrition thing. You should definitely change your diet and start eating less calorie dense foods. AND DROP THE SODA. Soda is horrible. So horrible that I completely dropped it years before I even started dieting. It sounds to me as if you are making excuses to not change your diet. I'm not saying this to be mean, because I did the very same thing before really buckling down and starting a diet. I assure you that it is FAR cheaper to buy your own food and bring your lunch with you to class (I'm in college, too) than it is to eat fast food every day. For instance, I can eat for approximately $5-6 a day by bringing my own food to campus with me every day. Conversely, I'd pay upwards of $7 on a single meal before starting my diet. Buy a nice soup thermos to put your lunch in. You shouldn't have any problem with it spoiling before you can eat it. Also, judging by that link you posted, you have a deficit of over 1,000 calories. I read somewhere that anything over a 1,000 calorie deficit and your body starts to burn lean muscle mass for energy. Either way, its recommended that you only eat 500 calories fewer than your maintenance needs while dieting. You might wanna try slowly upping your caloric intake to around 1800 calories (2373 - 500 = ~1873). |

Given your level of activity, I'd say that 1200 calories is not nearly enough. As I understand, 1200 calories for you would be the minimum maintenance for a more or less sedentary or mildly active person. I don't know how many calories are burned during dancing, but I'd say that if walking burns over 300 calories an hour (according to the activity log on this site), you are looking at maybe 500-600 calories being burned from dancing (thats just an estimate, feel free to give a more accurate number if you can). That leaves you will 600-700 calories a day, which is not NEARLY enough. See if you can bump up to maybe 1600-1800 calories a day to help off-set your dancing. |

| Weight Loss | Why am I so hungry??? | Oct 20 2007 21:42 (UTC) |

Original Post by kandykisss: Not to nitpick, but thats not quite correct. Vegetables are actually very difficult to digest, and that is one of the reasons they are so great. Veggies release far less energy in respect to the amount of energy it takes to digest them than, say, meat does. Fruit, on the other hand, is full of sugar, which is extremely easy to metabolize. Therefore, they release a fairly large amount of energy in respect to the energy needed to digest them. This ease of digestion of sugar is why processed sugars are so bad... our body is very efficient at breaking them down and using them as fuel. As for your body having more energy to put towards fat burning.... eh? Fat IS energy. You don't lose weight because your body uses excess calories to burn fat (if that were the case, we'd all be on a 10,000cal/day diet!). Weight lose arises from fat being metabolized to provide energy for our body. I tell you all this merely in hopes that you will understand the weigh organisms process food, and therefore understand weight loss better. Now, to the current issue... I think the OP is probably overextending themselves with exercise. Your body is telling you that you need more energy for your current physical needs. Either eat more, or exercise less. |

Plain and simple, auto makers don't have an incentive to start developing cars that run on alternative fuels. Personally, I think the only alternative fuel with a future is electric (if they could just get the range up, that is. American's need to be able to drive further than 25mi round trip. I drive 50mi round trip each day just going to classes). For the immediate future, I'm looking to get rid of my car and get a motorcycle instead. It may not be as cheap as electricity, but 65-75 mpg ain't too shabby. |

"The Babel fish is small, yellow and leech-like, and probably the oddest thing in the Universe. It feeds on brainwave energy received not from its own carrier but from those around it. It absorbs all unconscious mental frequencies from this brainwave energy to nourish itself with. It then excretes into the mind of its carrier a telepathic matrix formed by combining the conscious thought frequencies with the nerve signals picked up from the speech centres of the brain which has supplied them. The practical upshot of all this is that if you stick a Babel fish in your ear you can instantly understand anything said to you in any form of language. The speech patterns you actually hear decode the brainwave matrix which has been fed into your mind by your Babel fish.
