Fitness What weight machines do you use at the gym? Aug 20 2009

I've also been using the weight machines.  I had no idea they could be bad for joints.  Thankfully, I go to a gym with a women's only section so there are free weights in the women's section (not as many as in the co-ed, mind you).

But my question is then, what's the point of going to the gym if you're using free weights?  Couldn't you just invest in a few for home?  Plus one cardio machine (a treadmill or an elliptical), an inexpensive exercise bike, and a few free weights probably cost about the same as a year's membership, no?  Especially if more than one person in your family is using them... Thoughts?

I'm kind of glad this thread slowed down since I've missed so many weeks.  I haven't dropped off the face of the earth, just haven't dropped any pounds.  I've been hovering around 140 for weeks, 10 lbs short of my goal.  Haven't had time to go to the gym or track calories very well but I'm hoping when exams are over in a couple weeks to get back on track.

Congrats to those who've lost and met their goals!  And madamebones on the engagement!  Everyone else hang in there!

Redselene, that's awesome!  Maintenance...!  Well I hope you stick around and post about how that's going!  I'm guessing your goal weight is 120?  I'm thinking once I finally hit 130, I'll probably want to get down to 120-125.  This weight loss thing is pretty addictive when it's going well and you get lots of positive feedback.

I haven't really been logging my calories for a few weeks now, but I keep losing weight.  I feel like 3 or so months of logging has really helped me learn how to eat even without meticulously counting everything I put in my mouth.  I've come really close to overcoming my habit of overeating.  I can manage portion sizes pretty well even though I haven't been weighing and counting.  I haven't been as tempted to snack at night time (which was probably why I gained so much weight in the first place--eating half a box of cookies while watching TV every night), either by keeping busy or even sometimes I am just watching TV and I still don't get tempted.  Then if I'm feeling really hungry, I might have a little something but I haven't lost control.

Anyways I only lost .5 lb this past week so I do need to start logging meticulously again so I can get as close to that 140 goal by May 24 as possible.  I think I need to keep a 600-800 deficit, as when I get to close to a 1000 cal deficit I don't seem to lose as well.

Ughhhh, yummy_kitty that SUCKS!  I am really blown away by all the job losses and bad economy talk on tv and everything going on right now, sometimes it just seems so surreal it's like somebody's just making it up to be a jerk...

Start Weight (Jan 28): 162

Last week: Dunno

This week: 146.5

Height: 5.3ish

Goal: 140 by May 24 (daughter's 2nd b-day), 130 by August 31 (my 25th)

I'm worried I'm not gonna be able to meet my May goal at this point since I've only got a few weeks to lose the last 6 or so pounds.

Madamebones: what's your height?  We're at almost the same weight right now, but you're goal is a lot lower than mine!  I am guessing I'll probably be unsatisfied at 130 and want to lose more then... but for now it seems like a reasonable goal.

I can't weigh in 'til I go to the gym later (which I've barely been doing lately, hence missing last week's weigh in) but I just wanted to quickly 'weigh in' on bnfowler's comment about drinking alcohol.  I pretty much drink every Saturday night (and sometimes Friday too :o) ... Usually I drink beer which prob isn't as high cal as sugary drinks.  I don't think it's a good idea to eat way too little when you plan to have a few drinks, so I usually let myself get close to maintenance cals on days I drink alcohol. I.e. 1800-2200, and I DO log the drinks.  At least in my head, if I'm out (i.e. a bottle of beer is about 150).  Of course that means I don't lose any weight those days, but I also don't gain any and get to enjoy myself with my friends and not feel deprived.

If you wanna make a really low-cal drink, sometimes I mix lemon and lime juice with water and ice cubes (you can blend it if you want) and stir in some rum or vodka.  It's pretty sour, though!

Yeah, I think my activity level is more like "Light" on days that I don't go to gym and Light to Moderate on days that I do.  I mean I don't just sit around all day... I have a toddler!  It's just there's big 4-6 hour blocks where I sit doing nothing but school work so that makes me think "Sedentary" ...

This Friday when we do our updates, could everyone post (again, if applicable) your height, weight, and also activity level and daily calorie intake?  I want to compare to see whether I'm on the right track... Embarassed

Thats 3 of us who increased calories, and lost weight?  I'm wondering if perhaps I was underestimating my activity level slightly (perhaps I should consider it 'moderate' instead of 'sedentary') and was operating on too much of a deficit.  I've stuck to 'sedentary' so that I can add activities, namely the stuff I do at the gym, since some days lately I haven't been going...

Well, I think I accidentally broke my plateau unintentionally by going over my 1300 daily calorie limit to an average of about 1600 (sometimes more! gasp!) and only going to the gym a few times a week (instead of almost daily) because of time restraints for the past couple weeks...  Crossing my fingers that it's not just muscle loss, but...

Height: 5'3"

Last Week (Apr 3): 150

This Week (Apr 10): 148 !!!

Goal Weight: 130

I almost fell off when I set the scale to 150, got on it, and the pointer immediately dropped signalling that I'd set it too high!  No wonder I'm actually weighing in on time for once!

Weekends are usually my worst time for going over the 1300 calories, but starting Monday I'm going to try really hard to stick to it for a couple weeks to see whether I hit another plateau or weight starts dropping off again like I did when I first started at 162...

How'd everyone else do?

I've never slipped and eaten meat when drunk, but I've slipped and eaten non-vegan things for sure.  I can't think of an example, and I don't make a habit of it, but no veg*n is infalliable.

I think people have covered the reason for the guilt pretty sufficiently already; a lot of veg*ns ARE vegan for moral and ethical reasons.  For me, at least, I consider killing another being to be immoral whether they are human or non-human.  Period.

Not intending to be rude, but (if this was directed at me) I was asking about vegetarians, not vegans.  Veganism I will never be able to grasp! Smile

The point of the asterisk is that it means vegetarian/vegan.  Many of both choose their 'lifestyle' for moral and ethical reasons.

Don't underestimate yourself, it's simple.  Veganism is the logical extension of vegetarianism.  The dairy and egg industry is just as (if not more) exploitative, environmentally destructive, and the products can be just as unhealthy as meat products.

The 'mess in the bottom of the pan' statement makes me wondering if you're buying firm or extra-firm tofu?  That's the kind to use for stir-frying.  Soft and silken tofu is best for processing for desserts and smoothies and dips.

Ugh, don't say halvah!  I can't get vegan halvah in the city I live in now (it has egg in it).  When I was in Vancouver and pregnant, I ate a halvah bar almost every day.  Now I also try to avoid processed foods for the reasons tintinity said but I definitely contribute my first major weight gain after becoming vegan to Oreo-like cookies, samosas, and Earth Balance.

Vegetarian New Vegan needs nutrient advice. Apr 08 2009

Eat a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains each day.  This goes for veggies and omnis alike--when picking veggies and fruits, you can make sure you get balanced nutrients by eating a wide array of different colours of them (as hokey as it sounds).  Eat every day some leafy greens like broccoli, spinach or kale; something orange like yam or squash; some 'fruit' vegetables liked red and green pepper; etc.  Same with fruit, try to eat several servings to curb sugar cravings and vary them ... blueberries, bananas, strawberries, pears, mango one day... etc.  Eat at least a cup of legumes (kidney beans, chickpeas, tofu/soy milk, etc.) and throw in a couple tbsp. of nut or seed butter to your salad dressing or on a sandwich, in hummus, etc.

I followed the Eat to Live diet for a long time, and while I found it too restrictive to continue, my current diet in the way I ensure to balance nutrients when possible is still informed by Dr. Furhman's book.

Sounds like a milestone week!  Congrats coralbell on the new BMI and redselene and bure7360 for hitting the 120s!

Welcome jembop and sauvignon.  Weigh-ins are on Fridays but I almost always forget to post until Monday.  (sorry!)

Madamq, my cousin has lost about 30 lbs. or so over the past year and her feet are smaller.  She had to go get new flip flops for the summer cause her old ones were too big and broken in wrong for her 'new feet'.

I was really hoping to reach MY milestone this week (get past that 150 on the medical scale at the gym), but unfortunately I just hit it for a loss of .5 lbs.  On my cheap analog scale at home, I weighed in under 150 almost every day last week but I've been doing my weigh-ins with what the gym scale says so I am sticking with that.  This weekend was kind of a write-off because it was my niece's first birthday party and I had to bake 100 cupcakes for it and spent all day yesterday grazing on food my sister made for the party.  But I -really- want to get under that 150 this week, even if only by .5 again, so I'm gonna have to really stay on track over the next 4 days.

Luna bars I think are just like rice crispy squares with protien powder and chocolate or something, aren't they?

I like the 'unisex' Clif bars better, I think, though they do taste really vitamin-y.  I posted a message on another forum looking for clif bar/energy bar recipes to no avail, unfortunately.  I was thinking of doing something like oats, spelt flour, protein powder, a few ground up kids multivitamins, almond butter, agave nectar, and then whatever flavouring ... pat it into a baking pan and bake for half an hour...

Vegetarian Vegan and Engaged! Apr 01 2009

Ever since I became vegan, I have dreamed of having an all-vegan wedding with something crazy like Meat Your Meat playing in the background.  The thing about weddings is they are the one event in your life that is pretty much 100% about YOU (and your STB husband, of course) and people come because they love you and want to spend what will be one of the most important days of your life with you.  It's the one event that it's pretty rude for invitees to not come unless they have a good excuse.  In sum, it's the once chance you're ever gonna get to serve almost all of your friends and family a fantastic vegan meal and they can't say anything cause it's YOUR special day ;) ... For me, having meat at my wedding would basically ruin the day for me.  Obviously not everyone feels that strongly about it, so it's really up to you.  Anyone who knows me and loves me knows that I'd be really uncomfortable having meat at my wedding, and anyone who'd complain, well, I wouldn't want them there sharing that day with me.

Jeez can you tell I've given this a bit of thought?

In any case, congrats!!!

Thanks for the link raginheadache.  After reading it, I'm not sure it's a real plateau or whether I've just started slacking a bit.  I used to actually weigh food, now I just sort of guess on volume a lot of the time... When I first joined the gym, I was working out really hard almost every day, now (that I've started school) I'm lucky if I get there 3 times a week, and I never wanna overdo it since I know I have a lot of stuff waiting at home for me to do.  So yesterday I made the effort to, once I was there, stay longer and try harder.  Weekends are also probably killing me.  Last weekend I didn't even track calories at all.  It's not just the eating, though, we always always drink beer on the weekend and a couple of those can throw you way over your calories.  Sigh.  Well, at least .5 lbs this week, better than nothing!

Oh that article also scared me when it said something about going over by 50 or 100 cals. or something a day can equal a lb. after a month!  Yikes.  I guess I'll have to start being a lot more careful...

UGH! Sorry to post again but I just had a revelation.  I was writing my first CC journal post in a year and a half, and the course of the post led me to a blog I kept while following the Eat to Live diet last year (early 2008).  And then I read the blog.  And I got stuck at 150 lbs. then, too!  And, in the blog I noted that two years prior (early 2006) that when I was Calorie Counting (on here), I got stuck at 150 lbs.  Luckily that summer I managed to get down to 142 when my boyfriend at the time and I were hitchhiking across the country... but that was the lowest I've been in years!  This all means that for the past 4 or 5 years, except under extreme circumstances, I've been going up and down between about 150 and 170 lbs!!! Aughhh!  Now that 150 mark is even more important!!!

Wow, quite a few new names since I last checked in, welcome to all.  And congrats on the 8-10 lb. total group loss in the last week!  (I should tally it up and get an actual number, that might be fun.) I've kind of been avoiding checking in because I've been floating around the same weight for the last few weeks and still haven't managed to get below that 150 mark I was hoping for.  I'm hovering right around it at 151 still.  I'll post on 'official' update on Friday ;)

raginheadache ~ that was like me!  I didn't really see how big I was getting until about a year after I'd started putting on weight, I saw a picture of myself in the newspaper (eh, long story) and I was so embarrassed... But I didn't even start trying to lose weight right away.  It wasn't until a few months later I tried, but ultimately failed, to diet, but luckily managed to tone up a bit working at a bakery.

And you know what, coma_red, all that weight I gained in year prior to the newspaper photo had been right after my last year of high school.  In my last year of high school, I went 'vegan' which was in part just a cover up for eating a few hundred calories a day.  I lost about 10 lbs. or so which really only put me at about 130, but I felt better about myself so that was good... But as soon as I started eating relatively normally again (new boyfriend, first year of college, etc.)... I packed on 10, then 20, then by the time of the photo--40 lbs!  I had hit about 170 lbs. at only 5'3"!!! Anyways, that's just an anecdotal example of how your body can be totally thrown outta whack by not eating enough.  The sad thing was I probably didn't even look that bad at 140, but now I'm going to pay for that gain for who knows how long trying to tighten up all the extra skin ... Ugh!

Melinksa, I bet your 'gain' is probably just because it was your TOM.  I noticed the scales stayed about the same for the week during my last TOM even though, surprisingly, I did pretty well with eating and going to the gym.  Then the week later I noticed a significant drop.

I'm really looking forward to getting under the 150 mark, as silly as it sounds, cause then I won't have to use that extra '50' notch on the medical scales at the gym.  I don't know, guess it'll seem like a milestone to me.  Hopefully this Friday coming up, but probably next...

Another veg here (but not a nutrition or health expert)...  I could -maybe- see it being OK to consume nothing but a few green smoothies (unsweetened fortified soy milk for protein and extra vitamins, leafy greens like spinach and/or kale, and frozen or fresh fruits) for a day or two MAX, as that would only leave out complex carbs... but I wouldn't personally go beyond that.  By blending up nothing but healthy foods, you've got the 'clean' food thing going on, loaded with fibre and nutrients, and also it's sort of pre-digested a little bit and might be a bit easier on your digestive system. I have days where 2 or 3 meals are green smoothies, but I would feel really hungry if I didn't have some rice or quinoa or oatmeal or something at some point and some legumes.

kfirth1, i really need that soy milk in my smoothies.  Can't imagine having nothing but fruit and veggies for a few days.  I'd be grossed out.  Some vegan.  Haha.

Belated Friday Weigh-In

Height: 5'3.5
CC Start Weight (Jan 28): 162
Last Friday: 155
This Friday:  153 (YAY!)
Today (Sunday): 156 (GRR)

Can you seriously gain 3 lbs. over a weekend?  I went over my calories probably by 500-700 Friday and Saturday (for a total of maybe 2100 each day), and this is what I get.  Well I won't do that again.

Clearly, I'm among those who can't resist the temptation to weigh more than once weekly.  It's not every day, but every other to every three.  I should probably keep weighing on Fridays and Mondays to hopefully dissaude myself from binging on the weekend and putting weight back on!

Madamq thanks for bringing up the thing about cardio vs. strength training.  I've been doing both... one day I focus on cardio for about an hour, the next day I do a bit of cardio to warm up, weights for about 30-40 mins., and if I have time, I might do another 20 mins. or so of cardio (usually the elliptical since it's my favourite).  If cardio is that important for weight loss, maybe I should be focusing more on it... Wonder what 20 mins. cardio, 20 mins. weights, then a different type of cardio for 20 mins., would be like...?

Anyone else here go to the gym and happen to notice that the people running on the treadmill often tend to be thinner than the people using the ellipticals?  I mean it's not a hard and fast rule, just a tendency I've noticed.  I'm a bit afraid of the treadmill, I think I'm going to make it go too fast and go flying off it or something...

I didn't have time to login over the weekend to do the Friday update, but I didn't lose any lbs. last week. If anything, I was about 1/2 lb. heavier than the week before.  Still 157.  (5'3.5, goal weight: 140 by May 24 and 130 by Aug 31).

I missed going to the gym a couple days (I am trying to go for an hour a day 6x week), but I think I might be eating too many calories.  My activity level isn't exactly sedentary because I have a toddler I'm constantly cleaning up after, but I do a lot of sitting and studying during the day... plus the 1 hour at the gym... so I am not sure how many calories I really burn in a day.  I was about to do a little tweaking of my settings on the site here but thought I'd catch up on some threads, first...

I guess it could also be that I'm gaining muscle, so I should just get weighed on the scale at the gym that calculates fat % again ... but either way, I'd really like to see the number on the regular scale keep going down!!!

Re: Frame size...  I definitely think the actual measurement would probably more reliable than the finger thing since everyone's hands are different...

Weight Loss I eat well- just to damn much Feb 19 2009

I want to preface this with the warning that I am just starting out (well, this time around) and I've only lost a few lbs so far and have a lot to go.  That said, I am also a relatively healthy-eating night-time snacker.  I am really prone to craving sweet foods immediately after dinner, and then a couple hours later.

I wanted to jump in quickly to strongly urge you NOT to stop counting calories.  You know that guilt you feel for overeating because you know exactly how many calories too many you've eaten?   My goal is 1600 calories a day, and for the past couple weeks I've almost always gone over by about 200 because I can't resist having -something- at night.  So I measure out 200 calories worth of fat-free caramel corn, make a smoothie, or have a couple pieces of fruit.  Then I track it on Calorie Counter.  If I wasn't counting, well, I'd probably eat half the bag of caramel corn or throw chocolate and peanut butter in my smoothie, and knowing that I'd already binged that much... might as well finish the leftover spaghetti from dinner... and so it goes... KWIM?

I'm short too, about 5'3 or 5'3.5 at the most.  I want to lose 20 lbs by my daughter's 2nd birthday, May 24, and another 10 by my 25th birthday, Aug 31.  That would put me at 130, which I don't think I've been since I was about 15 or 16 years old.  (Might've been a bit less than that at that age maybe 120-125, can't remember...)   Maybe my weight loss goals aren't ambitious enough?  A lot of you are AT my goal weight right now...

I LIKE being small; I just wish I was small all over ;)

I'm exercising at the gym 5-6 times a week for an hour a day, plus whatever exercise I get in my daily activities, and trying to eat around 1600 calories.  Anyone else wanna share their fitness / calorie intake plans?

avoiding wheat means I can't have any of my weakness binge foods like Oreos, or PB sandwiches, etc.  plus the way non-organic wheat is grown on enormous, monocrop farms, with loads of pesticides, is bad for us and the environment.
