Health & Support Calories in Cough Drops?!! Feb 12 2009

Original Post by jojonannie:

go for sugar free ones, they have 5 or 6

NOOO don't do it. They're made with aspartame and if you have more than 2 you're intestines are not going to be happy. I made the mistake of switching over when I realized the truch about cough drops (don't worry happiness, I felt the same way, you're not overreacting). But the sugar-free ones will give you gas and cramps from hell Embarassed

Oh it's amazing.

I'm shocked every day when I hear my fellow dancers talking about food. One of the girls went on a wheat thins diet. A WHEAT THINS DIET!!! If you're going to restrict food at least restrict it to something healthy.

I have a friend who likes to go on a fruit diet before auditions/shows. She only eats fruit and vegetables. But then I see her eating this huge bag of trail mix w/ lots of dried fruit. Wait a second...what are you trying to accomplish here?

Just yesterday my roommate/dancer friend was complaining that she was constipated. I told her to eat fiber. She asked me if egg whites have a lot of fiber. WHAT!? egg whites a pure protein.

Most of my friends won't lift because they don't want to bulk up. I lift and I'm the scrawniest looking one of them all (granted its all body type...but still)

I'm sure I'll think of more. It's truly amazing. We're dancers. We're supposed to be in touch with our health!

We need to have basic fitness and nutrition education in public schools. End of story.

The Lounge Does everyone have facebook? .... Feb 05 2009

I've had facebook for about 4 years now. I've always used it primarily as a way to share pictures with friends. I never got a myspace because all the gaudiness pissed me off. Facebook's started to lose its original charm though. The pages used to be clean and simple and now they're way too busy. AND I keep getting friend requested by my aunts and uncles. Not okay...

Thank you everyone for your replies. I had no idea I would get such intelligent and insightful advice. You guys are great.

And actually, I do get along better with the "less aggressive" guys (often the wingmen). But then I can't ever get past the fact that they're with me b/c their friend wanted to be with my friend :)

Took a quick look at your profile and felt I had to chime in. I am currently dating a 20 year old dance major at NYU (and have been for over 2 years now), so I have a bit of additional insight into this particular question. My girlfriend has dozens of very attractive friends and was in fact hanging out with a few of them on the night I met her. Now I'm not going to say my girlfriend isn't as attractive as her friends (because I'd like to not get the **** smacked out of me), but she doesn't stand out from the group as the most attractive. Nevertheless, after minutes of talking to her and her friends I found myself exponentially more attracted to her than to any of the friends. Personality is so key to genuine attraction that it can far outweigh any marginal physical differences.

In short, if it's a serious connection with a guy that you're looking for, don't worry about not being the first to be hit on in a bar. Speaking as a college male with many, many single male friends, I can assure you that nine times out of ten, if a guy is hitting on you in a bar, he doesn't intend to pursue a real relationship. The main thing is to not get frustrated before you meet that tenth guy; and when he does roll around, trust me, he won't be distracted by your friends.

Eric

wow. thank you. that is exactly what I wanted to read.

I think calorie counting can backfire in instances such as these. I've done the same thing as you more than I'd care to admit and know that the next day I'm never very hungry (and why should you be hungry when you have all those calories stored up from last night). So I'd say focus less on counting and more on listening to your body. If you're hungry eat, if not, don't.

Fitness I want to buy a treadmill- Any tips? Jan 23 2009
22:15 (UTC)

If you're into HIIT, make sure the treadmill changes speeds at a reasonable rate. This something you take for granted at my nice gym. I joined a small gym over school break back home and the treadmills took FOREVER to speed up & slow down. Very annoying.  Good luck!

The Lounge What's the deal with all the Twilight threads? Jan 05 2009

I've read all the Twilight books. They're...alright. The first one's pretty good, then they just get kind of repetative. The romance is annoying and all the main character does is whine. I'm not saying it's a bad series, but I've read so many better books that haven't recieved this kind of attention.

I've heard the movie's worse, so I'm steering clear of it for sure.

Foods LOWEST calorie alcohol? Dec 16 2008

I think when you factor in mixers and all that, champagne's your best bet. I've determined that an entire bottle (750 ml) of the stuff is 550 cals (not that I would ever drink an entire bottle myself *cough cough*). So calorie wise, it's the equivalent of 5 shots but I think it's more alcohol. Plus it tastes better so...

woah, spirochete we have really similar measurements. I'm 5'7.5" and naturally thin, but when my weight dropped down too low (112) I was basically flat on top (32?) with about 25" waist and 33" hips. And I looked disgusting. There's no way I could ever ever get those stats...

Fitness Shin pain after running...any advice? Nov 22 2008
14:19 (UTC)

I don't know how dedicated you are to being able to run pain free, but one of the best things you can do is to strengthen those muscles down the front of your leg (and working the calves helps too).

Walk around on your heels until you feel a burning sensation along the front of your shins. If this is too easy, I REALLY suggest getting a theraband. Tie it around the leg of a table and slide your foot into the loop. Then flex your foot against the resistance to work on strength. This exercise can also be modified to work the sides of the shin and the calf.

Do calf raises. Make them harder by doing them off of a step. Add weights.

I also had one doctor who told me he's read studies that correlate weak hip flexors (the muscles that run across the front of your hip joint) with a tendency toward shin splints. So you might want to strengthen those as well.

I hope this helps! I had a long painful experience with a tibial stress fracture (which develops out of shin splints) so unfortunately I know a lot about this topic.

OH and I almost forgot. Always use at least 1% incline on the treadmill. This is probably the best advice I've ever gotten. It really helps. And make sure you're posture is good (that you're not learning back) and that you really roll through your heel before you push off with your toe.

Ok, I'm done now. Good luck :)

Fitness pilates...does it really work? Oct 11 2008

I think it's also important to note that there are HUGE differences in what are and what should be considered Pilates. You will not get the results that Joseph Pilates intended by watching a tape or even taking class at a gym. It is a very intricate method and requires that you learn with a knowledgable teacher in an intimate setting. You'll still get results, it's just different...

I agree with previous posters, you aren't going to lose weight or get drastic muscle gains. But it will help with posture and flexibility.

Yeah I agree but if you tried to tell me that when i was a teenager i would've laughed in your face.

I can remember when I was young it wasn't so much the being really thin that was important but just the fact that you THOUGHT you were fat. Extra kudos to you if you were actually really thin but grabbed your stomach skin and complained about your rolls. How's that for messed up?

I have a question pertaining to this...

When you do HIIT on the elliptical, do you vary the resistance (and inclince if possible) with the intervals or just the intensity of your steps? It seems like ideally you should, but it's kind of hard to keep changing the settings while you're trying not to pass out. haha

Fitness Body Pump Question Aug 03 2008

I think you're fine with the 10 lbs for now. I would suggest, especially for the squat track focusing on form over weight. A proper squat should really go so your thighs are at least parallel to the floor. Granted, you don't have time to do this on the single count squats but really work for it on the others. Otherwise, you are training your muscles to not work full range of motion. And in real life (as in when you squat down to pick something up) you're going to go all the way down or risk throwing out your back. Just my opinion, but something to think about :)

As far as triceps, I say just keep plugging along. I have the same problem with biceps and I'm begining to think it's a metal thing as well. I hope someone has some good tips for that...

I feel you.

When I started eating healthy and lost a ton of weight, some people were really rough on me. I actually broke down and considered seeing a counselor because people thought I had an ED. One of my best friends had to leave school and give up dance because of an ED and I know what it does to you. Being accused of that just tore me apart. Besides, I was PROUD that I worked my but off to get in great shape and people assumed that I did it in an unhealthy way.

I don't really have any advice to offer but I just want you to know that others get it too and it IS tough.

Since I've maintained this new weight for for about 6 months now, people have gotten used to it. Just give it time and hang in there, you look great!

I LOVE bodypump! I rave about it to all of my friends who, when they finally try it, hate it because it has a lot of upper body work and they're scared about bulking up. So not true. The women in class who've been at it for months look amazing.

I like to go once a week and do free-weights two other times in the week. I think it's a good way to mix up low weight-high reps with high weight-low reps.

I just wanted to share something interesting I learned this past year in my kinesiology class. People with narrow hips/pelvis tend to have larger butts than people with wider pelvises. This is because on a wide pelvis, the muscle tissue has more space to spread out than on a narrow one. African americans tend to have narrow pelvises-hence the booties.

I know that's no help, I just found it super interesting as it explained why I have no butt.

As for exercises, I second the squats and lunges.

I think what they might have told you is that when your heart rate is lower, after a certain period of time you will burn a higher percentage of calories from fat than if you were doing intense cardio. However, the fallacy of this is that when you do harder cardio you're burning more calories all around so even if a smaller percent of these are from fat stores, you would probably end up burning more overall.
