Hi CarCar-- just wondering what your symptoms were? How long until they resolved? I also notice it's been quite a while since you posted initially-- has the weight gain resolved itself? I too suspect I am gluten intolerant (b/c of a test from enterolab). I tend to lose weight b/c I have more energy to workout and, also, I do less emotional eating from feeling bloated and miserable. |

Hi there- I also used to have extreme issues with feeling that my day/week/whatever was pointless if I had not exercised. For me, it was similar to brushing my teeth. I did not understand how people could feel okay without a run/elliptical workout. Like you, vacations or other times that should have been enjoyable and meaningful for me were not because I was preoccupied with the fact that I could not get my workout in. I think it will be too hard for you to give up exercise completely right now, even though it is what , I think, would benefit you the most. Realize that it is okay if you gain weight. Clearly it seems like this is still an issue for you if you are afraid of not exercising. Not only is it OKAY, but you need to in order to look and feel your best-- only then can you improve and become more healthy. Also keep in mind that if you don't change now, your body will eventually stop being able to run or exercise at all-- you will inevitably develop some kind of injury going at the rate you are. That thought alone may scare you enough to back off a little. Every time you push yourself to run, actually picture your muscles fibers breaking down at this point--- because that is WHAT THEY ARE DOING if you still aren't eating enough (which, at 5'6" you aren't-- you would need to eat maybe 2500 calories a day if you are running 8 miles-- and that is too maintain, and you are trying to gain weight, no?). This should help to discourage you, to literally picture your body falling apart in such a way. But because you are having such a hard time giving up the running at the same time as eating more, perhaps what you need to do is to switch exercises to something a little more gentle (swimming, perhaps?) and that will give your leg muscles a break-- without making you feel lazy. But eventually, I believe, you will actually need to get yourself to a point where you can go a couple days without working out and still feel "okay" about yourself- as much for your mental health and for your weight gain that is needed. There are so many other things in life to be enjoyed than exercise, and it is horrible to miss out on those. |

| Health & Support | High level of bad cholesterol | Jan 09 2009 12:31 (UTC) |

Hi there! I also have genetically high cholesterol. Even when i was like 8 years old...I was scared of eating eggs for 10 years because I thought I might get a heart attack.. He he. I still have high cholesterol, but thankfully my numbers are better (low triglycerides, high HDL and medium LDL). You can have high cholesterol and not have a problem. But if you do have high triglyclerides, you might want to limit your refined carb intake. You can still eat sweets, but eat less of them and get more exercise to burn off some of that sugar so it doesn't get converted into fatty acid chains. Exercise also helps to boost your HDL levels tremendously, so if you are getting lots of walking in already, that's great-- maybe boost your speed a little? Add in some vigorous exercise like running or get on the elliptical too. That will REALLY help. Cholesterol is not as important as they once thought it was in heart disease risk. Now they think that inflammation (marked in your blood with certain proteins) is a far greater predictor. Eat an anti-inflammatory diet, including lots of fruits and veggies and less refined carbs and saturated fats (note I said less, so one coca cola won't kill you if you balance it out with other healthful things) Exercise also decreases inflammation in the body.
Some great anti-inflammatory foods are: dark chocolate or non-dutch cocoa powder, acai berry, blueberries, green tea (doesn't mean you can't add honey!), balck and red beans, red wine, spices like cinnamon, cloves, curry, turmeric...good luck!! |

| Weight Loss | I keep burping! | Oct 23 2007 16:53 (UTC) |

| Hi Timsmom- Just wondering what the timing has to do with it?? I am a snacker/grazer and occasional BINGER and I too have chronic burping and bloat, which doesn't seem to go away despite following a low calorie, clean diet for a few days. Would the fact that I have spent years being a grazer and not following a time table for meals have something to do with it? |
