I just went through the same thing.  Is your seat on your bike high enough?  You may need to raise it up a bit.  You want to make sure your legs extend all the way when you peddle, but you don't want to reach so far when you leg is extended that your hips rock back and fourth.

Hope this helps.

Weight Loss Biking and eating right! Can't lose weight. Help!! Jul 09 2008

Wow, I can't imagine that you are eating enough.

I just biked 35+ miles in about 2 hours the other day.  I had on a heart rate monitor and it showed that I burned almost 1800 calories.  I'm 5'6" and I weigh 155 lbs.  I was biking flat road as well as a number of hills.

I must say I agree with zeke79.  You need to consume more calories, and change up your cardio.

Good luck.

I have a "work out buddy" who car pools to the gym with me.  I have a set time that I go every day, 5:30 AM each morning.  I find that knowing someone is sitting in my driveway waiting on me each morning ( or picking someone up on the days I drive) holds me accountable.  After a while, ( I've been doing this for 5 years) you feel guilty if you don't work out.  I also find if I work out every day M-F it's easier.  When you skip a day, then it's easy to get off track, and let your exercise slide.

Good luck! Hope you find your motivation again.

I enjoy spin classes as well.  During the winter months I take two classes a week.  I did find this past winter I was doing a spin class on Tues/ Thurs and boot camp on Monday/ Wed & Friday.  Although the boot camp would use bands and lighter weights, I felt like my strength training was going by the way side and I seemed to have a ton of cardio.  ( we did a lot of jumping rope and running in boot camp)

Recently I went to a trainer and asked for a simple weight lifting plan that I could do at home with the dumb bells that I have on hand.  She walked me through a "drop down" method.  I enjoy it and it is really making a difference in my strength and my muscle definition.  In class we were using 5 & 8 lb weights, now I'm using 20, 15,  & 10 lb weights.

You need to do what is right for you but personally I feel that 3 spin classes or 3 cardio classes a week is plenty, adding strength training on the off days is a good choice and then if you want to run on the weekend that would be a great exercise week.

Don't know if this helps, but good luck.

Weight Loss Metabolism shift?? Jun 26 2008

I tried to check your profile to see how tall you are and how much you weigh..... but didn't see any information there.

If this helps.... I'm 5'6, 152 lbs, I also attend a boot camp: combination of cardo ( jumping jacks, jump rope, step, running etc. ) and strength ( bands, weights etc.) I wear a heart rate monitor, and I burn anywhere from 500-700 calories in 60 minutes.  I'm quite a bit older than you as well ( so you should eat more) .  My resting metabolic burn is 1720.  I never eat less than 1800 calories a day...... hope this helps.

Yes, I can relate to the slow weight loss.

I'm 5'6, that looks funny in print because ALL of my life I thought I was 5'7, when I went for a recent Dr. apt. they said I was 5'6 1/4, I argued with them, but they showed me the measurement..... Ha! so.... 5'6

I'm from Iowa.  I had my metabolic screening done in Cedar Rapids at a Hospital/fitness center.  They put a face mask on me.  Once the mask was in place you had to sit in a room for 30 minutes to get the resting rate.  I've heard other people who post at this site say they had to sit for 60 minutes.  Anyway, mine was 30, and you had to breathe through your mouth.  Then they put you on a tread mill.  They started me out with a 6 pace of jogging, then they elevated the tread mill ... I think it was 2% every minute.  They made me stay on the tread mill until they had a good reading.... I don't know maybe 10 minutes.... it wasn't long.  They have a measurement call at V02 max.  I'm going from memory so forgive me if I'm off a little bit here, but I think they said a woman my age should be at a 23(?) mine is 46.3 - very high for a person my age. ( It has something to do about the oxygen use that your body does during exercising etc.- the thing that spurs on your metabolism- anyway, mine is suppose to be very good)   I think they determined my resting heart rate was 53, and I burn 1720 calories at rest, by the time they factor in my office work during the day it bumps to around 2100. Then if you tag on a spin class I usually burn about 600 calories there so I'm at around 2700 calories burned per week day.  I try to attend a spin class 2 times a week, jog, and attend a boot camp for the other 3 days.  I always have at least 5 days of exercise for 60 minutes each morning.  I've been trying to get back to lifting weights and I try to concentrate on upper body 2 days a week, and lower body 2 days a week, but I usually only spend 15-30 minutes lifting weights.  I've been consuming any where from 1720 -2000 calories a day ( it depends on if I worked out that day or not if I consume more than 1720)  Last month when I hit the analysis key for the month I averaged 1800 calories a day.   I've been increasing my calories since March 4th.  I usually have at least a 400 calorie deficit up to 1000 per day.  I don't get why I'm not losing.... but, I'm not discouraged.

I was getting very burned out with this whole thing a while ago, but I feel good, and for the most part, my clothes fit.I would just like to drop some of the fat off my body.  I tend to cary a lot of body fat.  I think what bothers me the most is... I've done everything your are suppose to do to acheive my goal, but I have stalled out.  I did the screening, I eat right, I exercise, I've enlisted the help of a trainer, etc. etc.

Oh well, that's enough about me.

Have a good day!

Hummm... not sure what happened with this thread, I wasn't getting up dates on my computer when people were posting... so I kind of spaced it off for a while... but I'm b-a-c-k!

OK, bonton, snow, robbie, I feel like a heavy weight weiging in at this thread..... I weigh a whopping 154!  After I had the kids, I weighed 135, but I've given up on weighing that again, especially since I can't seem to drop below 152!  Ugh! I'm 5'6 and according to the metabolic screening that I had in March I should be consuming 1720 for my resting MB. Sounds like a lot more than most of you.  I was eating 1200 to 1300 calories per day, but the trainer told me to up them. AND, I guess the good thing is, I haven't gained, but I haven't lost either, just seem to be holding in there.

I have two boys: one is 25, the other soon to be 22, both live within 20 miles of me and my husband, so I have all my chicks under my wing so to speak... at least for now.  No daughter in laws and none really in the immediate future, from what I can tell.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

I'm avoiding the scales today.....TTOM.... I think I'm the only woman who is nearly 51 who continues to have a period.  It makes for a very cranky old lady!

Tuesday in my world means "spin class" day.  I purchased a heart monitor so I know that I burned 685 calories today.  The only problem is.... I was working too hard.  One thing that I did learn when I had my resting metabolic rate screening is... you need to work below your anaerobic heart rate... for me that is below 163.  For my work out today I spent 95% of my time at that rate so I only burned 35% fat! ( when you back off and work in your "zone" you actually burn less calories, but a higher percentage of your calories are from fat- does that make sense?)  I need to back off a little bit during class to get my heart rate down, but when you have an instructor barking at you to pick it up, I tend to cave. ( somewhere in my life, I became very competitive.... must have come along from raising two sons) Oh well, I guess it's better than sitting around, reading the paper all day eating bonbons..... wait a minute... that is sounding pretty tempting right now.

Well, hope you all have a great day!  I'm off to work.

PS.... did I read the word wine here?  Does anyone have a favorite?  I personally like the Greg Norman Wines..... anything red.  I just had a sip of a wonderful red wine at the local restaurant the other day... too rich for my blood.. $60.00 a bottle, but it was a Scott Harvey... I believe.  Yummy!  Wine is my weakness!

OK, I just stumbled onto this thread... looks like it's been in the "works" for a while, but what can I say... I'm a little slow.

I have been saying in the recent past that I just turned 50, but in reality, I'll be 51 in June.... Ugh, I haven't got use to the 50 yet!

Reading all your posts, I feel like I have twin sisters all over the place.  Some one here wrote, "I lose a pound, only to gain it back in a few days!"  That is the story of my life.

I think I am very active for my age... as a matter of fact, most of my friends don't exercise and I usually exercise daily.  I currently attend a spin class on Tues/ Thurs, a boot camp on Wed/ Fridays, and then usually Jog or attend a Yoga Class on Mondays.  Weekends are kind up up for what ever I feel like doing.  Sometimes I bike, other times I just exercise my dog.  Other than having an office job, I'm pretty active.

I have been counting calories here at this site religiously since the first of the year... Jan 1'st to be exact.  Since the first of the year, I have lost about 6 lbs.  It all came off in the first month, every since then, I have been yo yoing up and down several pounds.  In my frustration, I had my metabolism professionally checked- I thought mine was as slow as a snail, but found out it was pretty fast, so I started to eat more calories.  When that failed to work, I bought a HRM, I found out that I usually burn any where from 500- 700 calories in my boot camp and spin classes.  I've been pretty annoyed with all this lack of losing weight after all my efforts, until I've recently been distracted by the deep smile lines in my face.  (Honestly, it's like I just noticed them last week)  I'm pretty sure I've turned into my grandmother....over night!  Ugh!

Glad to see I'm in good company.

Have a great day!

Fitness Best way exercises for losing love handles? May 09 2008

Richard,

Thank you for your post.  I exercise quite a bit: Jogging- Mondays, Spin class on Tues/ Thursdays/ Boot camp on Wednesday/ Friday.

I've been having a hard time reducing my body fat %.  Many times after exercising, especially in spin class, I detect an ammonia smell.  Honestly, I thought it was some sort of hereditary thing.... (when my son played football, his uniform would smell terribly of ammonia).  Thanks for solving this mystery.

I did buy a HRM so I can keep better track of exercising in my "zone".

Thanks

Weight Loss Effective Body Fat Measurement Mar 26 2008

Do you belong to a gym?

Usually one of the trainers there have calipers they can use to do a "pinch" test.

I have a "fancy" scale and it tells me my body fat is 35% Ouch!  I knew that wasn't correct because I had a body fat analysis done at my gym a while back and remembered it was in the 20's. I went to a fitness facility that did a metabolic screening and asked them to also do a body fat test.... they measured 27%.

I'm throwing out the scales.

Good luck!

Helllllooooooo

I came across this thread the other day, but didn't have time to post to it until now.

I'm 50, been married 30 years ( this October), have two adult boys 25, and 21.  I found CC last fall, but didn't start counting calories, and logging information until New Years day.  I've lost 6 lbs- so it has been a slow process.

I know I've read where a few of you hate to exercise, sorry but I like it.  I think it's because my children are out of the house, and now I have ME time.  I usually work out 5 days of a week, for an hour each day.  I like to mix it up, I do spin classes, aerobics, and I belong to this daily boot-camp at the gym.

I haven't gone through the big M yet, but my . are irregular.  Don't have a lot of night sweats, but, I do have an addiction to red wine, I tend to have a sweet tooth, but have been keeping it a bay lately.

I recently had a metabolic screening.  I found out that I burn a lot more calories on a given day than I originally thought.  So just in the last month I have upped my calorie intake.  I am still waiting to see where this all shakes out.

Hope to keep track of this thread and get to know you all a little better.

Oh, Finally, my photo... the car....... my mid life crisis.... I know you all will understand. Cool

I wouldn't mind adding you all as friends so I can keep track of your journals... do you mind?

If you create a 500 calorie deficit per day, you should lose a pound per week. (3500 calories in a pound; 500 x 7).  If you create a 1000 calorie per day deficit, you should lose 2 pounds per week.

Cell-

I agree this is all very time consuming, and the longer I stay at it I feel like I am getting addicted. This must be how drug addiction starts ( lol)

The V02 max reading was out of the same test for me. It has to do with the amount of oxygen that you utilize while resting/ working out..... I don't quite understand it all. You may want to take a 2nd look at your print out that they gave you concerning your screening, possibly it is hidden there somewhere. Unless they told you up front that it was an additional test.  Is that what happened?

I am interested to see how things go for you. Would you consider adding me as a friend and keeping me informed. Other than the age, we have similar goals.

Have a good day!

Weight Loss Professional Metabolism Assessement Mar 08 2008

I came across your post this morning and was going to suggest you have your RMR professionally checked, but I see you beat me to the punch.

I recently had my Metabolic Screening performed just this past Tuesday and I came up with some similar results.

I'm much older than you; 50,  but I'm 5'6"1/4  ( shocker, because I always thought I was 5'7"), I weigh 154 lbs.  I work out 5-6 times a week pretty intensely, but have a desk job during the day.

When I put in my profile here at CC the numbers were all over the place, they indicated I should eat 1200 calories on a day that I don't work out and more on days that I had my spin class, or my boot-camp.  I was hungry all the time, and I would gain a pound, lose a pound.  It was quite frustrating.

I discovered thought this metabolic screening (New Leaf) that I have a resting burn of 1720!!!! Unheard of for a woman my size and age.  With a light lifestyle added in I burn 2236 per day.  This is before any exercise.  I found my fuel mixture is 85% fat 15 %carbohydrate.  I have 27% body fat, and I would like to get it in the 20% range.  They gave me a number called a V02 max it is considered your horse power for your metabolism... mine should be some where around 23, it is in fact 46.3.  All these numbers were considerably higher than the information I got from CC, but it's understandable.  We are all not built the same.  So to make a long story short, in the past few days that I have been able to implement my calorie intake of 1720 or more, I've lost 2 pounds!  I can't believe it.  I feel like a different person.  I feel better knowing my exact numbers.  However, I was reluctant to believe the machine.  It took my thick skull a few days of thinking about this whole thing before I could apply the information.

Glad you had your screening completed and you know exactly where you stand.

Weight Loss am I eating too little? thoughts please Mar 06 2008

Hey I saw your post and thought I should respond.

I am WAY older than you, but I weigh 154, and I'm 5'6.  I just had a metabolic screening performed this past Tuesday and I was amazed at what I was able to find out about myself.

I too am quite active.  I work out for 60 minutes M-F and occasionally lift weights on the weekend.  My workouts consist of a boot-camp on MWF and 60 minutes of spin class on T/TH.

When I started to log my profile here at CC I plugged in sedentary( because I have a desk job) and then I would input my work out's.  Based on this information on days that I wasn't working out CC said I should consume 1200 calories. ( FYI- just so you know I'm 50). I thought because of my age, this should be pretty accurate.  I found out Tuesday that my RMR is actually 1720- this is before I do my mundane office job, and working out.  I had been eating anywhere from 1350-1500 calories per day.  I recently just upped them to 1720.  Sorry, I haven't increased the calories long enough to see any results ( since Tuesday) but I am anticipating I should be seeing some soon.  I too was loosing weight but stalled out at 154.  By the way I had a body fat test done as well I'm at 27% - which I would like to see reduced to 20% and I should accomplish that if I drop to 140.  I also found that during my screening I have a V02 Max measurement of 46.3, a woman my age should be around 23.  The VO2Max is a measurement that they explain should be considered the "horsepower" of your metabolism, so the bigger the better.

The reason I am telling you this is...... I'm older and shorter than you which means my metabolism should be slower than yours, and I should require fewer calories, with all this being said...... I think you are eating the right amount of calories..... possibly you should up them a little, but I wouldn't drop them.

Hope this helps you.  I would be interested in hearing what you think.  Since our statistics are so similar, if you want a work out buddy ( the age of your mother) Coolfeel free to add me to your buddy list.  I have managed to loose 6 pounds since the first of the year, and I would like to loose an additional 14.

Hey thanks for the tip.  Do you mind sharing what brand you purchased.

I don't use a kitchen scale.  I try to use the method of size of your thumb, fist, a deck of cards etc.

I recently purchased a heart monitor ( still waiting to get it in the mail), and I checked my metabolic burn, so I might as well go all out and get a kitchen scale as well.  If I'm going to do this, I might as well do it right.

Oh, I also have that last 14 lbs to loose.

Thanks again.

I agree with an earlier post here that it would be helpful if you get a trainer to walk you through the basics.  If this is a financial strain, there is a great women's weight lifting website that walks you through technique, and they even post photos to show you the correct way to lift.  They also give you suggestions about how heavy of weights you should be using.  I believe it is called stumptuous.com.

Check it out.  I found it to be very helpful.

Weight Loss Not doing so great... Mar 06 2008

Hey Girl,

First of all congratulations on your baby girls!  How old are they?

Second, could it be that you may be suffering a little post p depression?  Your explanation of a typical day; sleeping 10 hours, not eating, going to the gym etc.  sounds a little down.

AT the risk of sounding like your mother....... finally, your an athlete, you know what it takes to make your body strong.  Don't fall into an unhealthy rut of starving your body.  You have more than just yourself to take care of.  You have two small children counting on you.  If necessary possibly get some counseling.

I don't know if you are nursing your children, but I did when I gave birth.  If this is the case you need to eat so they can eat.

If you haven't already, make sure you set your profile, see how many calories you should consume in a day, and how many you burn and apply it to your life.  You can do this.  Good luck!
