Hello all-

I am still trying to adjust to working nights. Between that and my double shift yesterday, a 4 month old starting to teeth, and my other 2- I have been busy.

I weighed yesterday(I know I am way off schedule), I was down to 394. 6 lbs since last time I weighed on the 23rd.

Nanny- I think you missed my Oct 12th weight of 400.

I reached goal #1 and broke into the 3's.

I have made some eating changes. I have been eating a lot of ff refried beans, topped with a range of things from ff cheese, low fat sour cream, lettuce/tomatoes, etc.

I also have decided to use pork skins as my snack. I know SB prohibits them, but knowing they are no carb and remembering that Atkins allowed them, I decided to snack on those to see how I did. I still lost while snacking on them. I keep them in my desk drawer.

I appreciate the tips, suggestions, and recipes.

Talk to you all soon.

I have my lunch bag right at desk with me and it keeps things cold, so that isn't a problem.

The pineapple/mandarin oranges with pork in the crockpot sounds good. What phase are you?

I want a burger so bad and bought a lb of extra lean beef yesterday. I'm going to have one later with some swiss.

I do like cottage cheese and yogurt and eat that.  Not a big fan of lunchmeats except when on bread, not sure why but I really dont like the taste/texture otherwise.

I so wish pork rinds(or pork skins as we always called them) was allowed. I could snack on those all night.

I eat at the same time as the family for the most part, but I don't eat what they eat. They don't want to do South Beach and my 75 year old father lives with us, I am not going to be successful in changing the way he eats. LOL

I think I am starting to get bored with it, because I been eating a lot of chicken and getting sick of chicken. But, I got me some other stuff when I stopped at Wal-Mart after work Sunday morning. I'm not giving up yet.

I tried the Jennie-O turkey burgers(southwestern I think) and I really didn't like those.  Would it taste any different if I bought just plain ole ground turkey and made patties?

I think I am going to make up a big pot of chili and freeze it today while I am off.

When I was in the hospital after I had my son, they served me broth and I really liked it. However, I bought some swanson's broth and really didn't like the taste of it. Wonder if they put something in it at the hospital?

I need snack ideas....I got sugar free/no added sugar  popsicles/fudgsicles and sugar free jello, string cheese, cherry tomatoes. I am going to slice up some cucumbers. Any other ideas that I can sit on my desk and snack on?

Well, I had a chance to weigh today. I lost nothing. But, I didn't gain nothing.

It has been almost 2 weeks since I weighed, I thought something.

Biggest problems I can think of off hand that was different from week 1 are:

1) I didn't eat 3 meals a day with 3 snacks

2) I drank a bit more soda(diet, but more than normal)

3) I had to eat out about 3 times, I made 100% better decisions, but none the less it was fast food.

4) I ate more processed food than week 1.

I can handle the 0 loss because I didn't gain and I now that I ate healthier for 2 weeks whether I lost or not.

Wow, has it really been almost 2 weeks since I checked in?

My 3 day a week part time job has gone to full time. I have been working a variety of shifts, but going on 3rd shift permanently tomorrow night, which is why I am awake at 4:22 am, so I will sleep tomorrow day. I have been busy getting adjusted to the working life again, plus my 3 month old has decided to start teething. And the 2 older ones having soccer practice/games 3 diff days a week. And traveling about 100 miles one way for my husband's dr appts. So, I didn't forget you all, just been extremely busy, so busy I never even got weighed this week. But will weigh on Monday. I didn't get to walk this week. I normally walk on Mondays and Thursdays. Monday I worked 2nd shift and we had flooding rains on Thursday. But, I will get back at it next week. Or I may be swimming if the rain don't stop.

I have had a few small cheats. Like eating about 5-10 raisins, 4-5 small pieces of popcorn chicken, etc. Nothing big. Still on phase 1, because I really didn't even realize until earlier tonite that it had already been 2 weeks since I began phase 1.

Last night when I made supper, I had made the others baked beans and I wanted some beans. So, I had some fat free refried beans. I heated them up and tore up a slice of fat free or low fat(can't remember which) Swiss cheese in them and let it melt. I then put a few spoons of salsa on the plate next to them and kind of mixed them as I ate them. Very good.  I had leftovers tonite.

I will check back in on Monday with my new weight. Good luck everyone and catch up with you all again soon.

Thanks for the replies all. I am finding that I really like SB WOE. I got the book and been reading it. Stopped by the sleep lab to see my aunt this morning and weighed. Down 9 more pounds. I can't believe it.

I am going to walk on Monday/Thursday this week again with my other aunt at the soccer fields.

I got a job and should be starting next week, working Sunday-Monday-Tuesday. So, I will have to switch my days for walking.

My husband's boss runs an antique/junk/everything store and I saw she had a treadmill. The hubby stopped and his boss gave it to him. It is an older one but works(worked) good. Until hubby broke handle that slows it down. He is going to fix it though. It has the monitor panel on it, and a place to plug in an ear clip for keeping track of heart rate. But the clip is missing and I doubt I'd use it much anyhow. Will be a nice treadmill for when ice/snow is on.

Back when I had a scale and weighed food, with apples I would weigh it before I ate it and then weigh the leftover portion. I could have sliced, but I prefer eating apples whole.

Well, I just ate 3 teaspoons of PB, so not too bad.

I walked again tonight, 0.8 mile(that is how far it is from where my daughter's soccer field to the other end and back is). I stopped halfway through at the bathrooms to use it, but that was it.

I am finding SB to be much better than Atkins so far.

Few more questions-- as long as there is no added sugar is things like chili seasoning and taco seasonings ok? How about cinnamon?

I logged all my food yesterday, for the first time, and I only had like 1436 calories for the day. I ate 3 meals, 3 snacks, and dessert.

Is it ok to have a low number of calories?

Hello all--

I know weigh ins are on Thursdays, but I weigh in on Tuesdays at the Sleep Lab, so I will just use my Tuesday weights, if that is ok?

I didn't weigh last week because it was ttom, but weighed today, 409. Down 4 lbs in last 2 weeks.

Yesterday I walked .8 of a mile at the soccer fields while my daughter was practicing. I only stopped for about 5 secs about 1/4 of the way through. I plan to do this 2 or 3 times a week until I get more used to it.

Did my shopping today and I am officially starting SB WOE tomorrow morning.

Thanks Karen(that is my mom's name)!

You are right, I shouldn't be too restrictive for too long. I didn't think about that.

I appreciate all the information.

I have a couple other questions..

Salsa-- ok in phase 1 or no? I use Pace and it doesn't list added sugar and all the ingredients are on the approved vegetables list.

Sausage/Ground Pork-- ok in phase 1 or no? The supermarket has fresh sausage and fresh ground pork, I would be ok with either of them for breakfast time or to make burgers out of.

I do my next round of shopping Tuesday the 6th, so I am making a list of approved foods.

Sorry for so many questions.

ETA: Seems sausage and ground pork comes from the shoulder butt cut of pork. It isn't on the approved or not allowed list.

Also, another question-- under pork on the approved list it says loin, does this include all types of pork made from the loin cut, such as chops, ribs, roast?

I ordered the South Beach book today from B&N.

Hello everyone.

I hope I am not intruding here. I have been a member for a few years and have tried losing weight various ways and have given up in the past. However, I am determined to do it this time. I have had many challenges over the past 1 year and so far have made it through them, including quitting smoking and almost doing away with soda. I haven't had a cigarette since I checked in the hospital to give birth to my son on July 1st and I have went from 6-12 sodas per day to maybe 2 a week.

I am going to try the Southbeach diet and see how it works for me and would like to participate in this thread with you all.

I also have a few questions if anyone cares to answer them.

Is cheese included in the 2 cups of dairy per day? If not, how much is allowed?

Where it says, for instance on breakfast, minimum 1/2 cup vegetables- is there a maximum amount of allowed vegetables per day?

Has anyone stayed on phase 1 longer than 2 weeks?

I was doing some searching online and it said the doctor that created SB stated if morbidly obese then as long as 2 months in phase 1 is ok, but not longer.

I was thinking of doing phase 1 for 2 months, going to phase 2 for a month and then back to phase 1 for 2 months, repeat.....   Any thoughts?

My stats:

Name: Kristy

Age: 29

Height: 5' 5"

Weight: 413

1st mini goal: 350

Overall goal: 150(at this time)

Someone mentioned the winner being a role model and doing promotions and what not. If Vicki won, she would have to be offered a lot of money to do that stuff. Even then, I am not sure she would take the time to do any of that because she will have the prize money to be pizzing away.

LOL!  I have the same problem.  After losing more than 65 lbs., none of my old clothes fit.  I'm down to 2 pairs of jeans I bought this summer which are also getting baggy.  Too bad insurance won't pay for new clothes as we get healthier and thinner!

If insurance did it would be a great cost-saving tool for them.

More healthy you get= less doctors visits in most cases.

Hi proud mom of 2.  It does make sense what you are saying but when I log in today that I shopped for 150 minutes  it shows I burn 266 calories per hr.  Normally I would burn on an average day about 2490 calories.  Now it is showing that I burn 2900 calories today.  That is 410 calories more than I would normally burn.  So the deficit would be , considering my eat metre daily goal is 1700,  1200 calories for that day.  Does that make sense to you?  Maybe we are saying the same thing here ...lol...or I am really confused.

Also, thank you very much for taking the time to figure this out with me! and good luck on your weight loss too.

Your post makes sense except for the "when I log in today that I shopped for 150 minutes  it shows I burn 266 calories per hr."

I am curious why you only logged in 150 mins if you went shopping for 7 hours. That would be 420 mins of shopping.

What is your activity level set on?

I second taking measurements. I'm not good on the calorie intake portion, so I won't comment on that.

But, I have read where people have lost inches but not pounds.

As for muscle weighing more than fat, that is true and not true.

A pounds is a pound. 1 lb of fat weighs the same as 1 lb of muscle. However, it takes more fat to make a pound, than it does muscle.

However, if you were to get a piece of fat and a piece of muscle the same size, the muscle would weigh more.

Look at a person who weighs 200 lbs that has a high BF % and a person who weighs 200lbs with a very low BF %, both weigh the same but the one with less BF will appear much lighter than the other.

While you may have burned 650 during that time from the walking/shopping, you didn't burn an additional 650.

Even if you set on the couch that entire 7 hours, you would have burned calories.

So, when you log it into your activity log, it will automatically determine how many additional calories you burned.

I don't know how many you normally burn on a sedentary level per day, so I'll make some numbers up just to demonstrate.

Let's say you normally burn 1800 calories per day at a sedentary level. That is 75 calories per hour. For 7 hours you were shopping, which burned 650.

So, if you had not went shopping those 7 hours you would have burned 75 x 7 = 525 calories, but since you went shopping you burned 650 calories, which is 125 more calories than normal.

As to where on a non-activity day your burn meter would show 1800, it would show 1925 calories after logging in the activity, if that is the only activity you logged in.

Make sense?

On the nuts........buy them in the hull. This way you have to crack them before you eat them.

On the chocolate, try freezing it and only thawing what you are going to eat. This will work for some, not others(like me who likes frozen chocolate). But some can't eat frozen chocolate.

Also, when you type in the number how are you sure that it's what you want? Like what if you wanted cherry tomatoes, but it only gives you the number for regular tomatoes?

After you type in your ingredients and the next page comes up where it shows the nutritional information and gives you the option to save........look at the ingredient list....to the right it will save (view) click on view and it will show you the particular item it used.

And on the tomatoes.......there is one listing where you select regular tomatoes or cherry tomatoes after you click on it. But if you look through the food list there is a listing for just cherry tomatoes.

If you go to the Food Browser, and look up the ground beef you want, once you click on it and it shows the nutritional information, look up in the address bar and look at the very end of the address, there will be a number.

For example, on the Ground Beef 95% lean/5% fat, crumbles, cooked, pan-browned

The address in the bar is

http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-beef-g round-95-percent-lean-i23560

When you type the ground beef into your recipe, type [23560] after it. This will tell it which type of ground beef you are using.

Like this:

1 lb Ground Beef [23560]

Hope that helps and I'd enjoy seeing the recipe.
