Motivation I swear my family is trying to keep me fat May 06 2009

If you say, "Oh thank you sweetie" kiss him on the cheek, and throw them in the fridge, or drawer and don't touch them again, he might get the picture.

If he doesn't, the next week, when he hands you two more, say the same thing, Only this time, add, "I'll throw it in the drawer with the other 2 you bought me last week".

Slowly, as the number grows to 10 or so (or more), you might even ad a "Wow, there must be like, $15.00 worth of candy bars in here!" with a cheery smile at him.

Hopefully, He'll get the picture and see you are serious and stop buying...

You may also consider that he may be doing the whole thing that guys do sometimes, "Wow honey, you bought me a bowling ball for christmas in YOUR size, and I don't even bowl!".

With the family. If they pressure, say the same thing, "Okay, I'll just save it for later!" with a huge smile and hug/kiss. Get it boxed to go and either toss it or put it in the fridge at home.

You're family will probably get frustrated that you are not fulfilling their expectation of eating something in front of them at that moment. They will stop offering.

If you've tried it tons of ways and you still don't like it, well, you just don't and you can't "make yourself" like it. I'd try for alternative quick snack protein sources.

Check the rest of the forums out, there are lots of suggestions for high protein snacks.

Excellent job!

I was jogging for a while to lose weight until I found out I was pregnant.

When I first started, I couldn't jog a quarter of a mile without doubling over and throwing up. I also would get excruciating pain in my ears and bad joint pain.

I took it slow and before long I was running a few miles around the park, and felt myself getting lighter and enduring less pain.

I could not have done it without and MP3 player, good shoes (good sports bra) and cotton balls to stick in my ears for those days when my ears got bad.

You are obviously well beyond the "beginning" point, but I figured I'd toss all those out there for anyone else who wants to start.

Yours is the first time I've ever heard of a work place having a no heat policy.

I tend to keep: Cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, bagged salad, fruits such as apples (I keep a jar of peanut butter for my apples too), and a bottle of salad dressing in the fridge.

I dunno if anyone at your office has coffee, but you could run hot water through a coffee less machine to get hot water into the carafe (I use this for oatmeal packets, and dry soups.

I know how you feel.

One year, I had plateaued just before thanksgiving, then thanksgiving week, I ate a LOT more than my caloric intake was supposed to be (not bad stuff like twinkies etc, but healthy stuff, like turkey, veggies, etc.) .

Lo and behold I LOST a LOAD~! Imagine my shock. I thought, "Wait, something's backwards, this isn't supposed to happen, I'm supposed to be PUNISHED by gaining weight, not LOSING!

So I realized, sometimes, you have to take a few steps backward to jump start yourself, and then keep moving forward again.

Good Luck.

BTW - Sabotaging shouldn't involve ho-ho's and moon pies (which would be a REAL sabotage), keep it healthy.

Actually...

I was doing the same thing and had lost a TON of weight and:

My hubby got a bit jealous that I was spending so much time counting, logging, and talking about it and told me I was doing it too much. I stopped around fall of last year.

Long story short: I fell off the wagon and have been seeing my hard work disintegrate.

I promptly announced to my hubby that I was getting back into counting again.

I explained to him that for me, it's all or nothing, I can't help it, I don't know any other way, it's how I work, and it's the only effective way I've ever done it successfully. He nodded, said that he won't ever get in my way again because he (most of all) understands.

Now, when I talk about it (I try not to too much), he occassionally hust "uh-huh's" his way through what I say, but I don't call him out, I'm just happy he lets me blab.

I recommend what flybee says.

IMO

If you get to that point (respectively, the one where you are): STOP counting to LOSE, count to maintain.

Just allow yourself to maintain for a while and plateau for a bit. I know it's not what you ultimately want but: Wouldn't you rather prolong than fall off completely.

Everyone thinks of a plateau as a bad thing, however, it allows you time to adjust slowly. I figure, if you rise to the top quick, you can fall even faster.

Once you regain control... start up again.

Slow and easy buddy.

Misscharliejo -

I'm the type of person who never thought to do that, but I can actually tap into anger pretty easily as a defense mechanism and y'know what?

I never thought to use it that constructively.

Of course, it'll all stay in my head (as it usually does), but working myself up enough to use it to get what I need is gonna be a life saver for me.

Thanks so much!

Weight Loss What is a processed carb?? Apr 24 2009

That's interesting. I'm always hearing about simple vs. complex which from what I understand fits more of the white bread & pastries, vs. veggies explanation that Spirochete and Lafoutloud talk about.

However, your use of the word "processed" makes me think of what I tend to keep in mind when I limit what I buy at the store.

I think of processed carbs as: Cheez It's, Crackers, Cookies, most chips and other things that come out of a box or package.

Unprocessed, to me would seem more along the lines of what gi-jane was describing. I figure, if it can be picked off of a plant or bought fresh from a butcher, it's not processed.

Yeah, these look pretty good for weight gain. I hope you are getting enough calories for the whole day. I don't see meat. Unless you are vegetarian or avoid meat for other reasons, you might want to step that up a bit, but your fats look decently healthy.

I'm in the exact same boat. I refuse to give up my tortillas, frijoles, mexican rice and taco's.

Here's some of what I've done.

- added veggies: I've never seen my family eat veggies aside from when they are making a chile relleno or something of the like. My aunt died of colon cancer and I honestly think most of it was due to heavy starchy mexican foods/eating out with no fiber.

- cut out the lard/use PAM. I use PAM when I make my corn shell tacos. Stay away from burrito's unless you make them yourself and can control what goes in them, they are so packed with cheese, creams, lards, potatoes etc, it's insane. If you make one at home, use lean meats, lots of veggies, and go easy on the condiments.

- Beans are good, so is rice but make sure to have reasonable portions

- Watch the goodies/condiments - Guacamole and sour cream pack one helluva wallop when it comes to calories. So, prepare it the lowest calorie way you can (I also use low fat sour cream) and have reasonable portions. Also, salsa has really high sodium so watch the portions on that.  Mexican candy is packed with sugar, and you know that the pan dulce is not much better either, split a concha rather than eating the whole thing. When you use cheese, make sure to watch the portions and use low/no fat if you can. Queso fresco - only eat it every once in a while, too fattening.

- Watch the Horchata/Jarritos/Tamarindo: Full of sugar, once in a while is great, get a small or split it with someone.

Also, as much as a love my family's food, I only make a mexican dish a few times a week. I can't possibly eat it every night, it's one of those genre's where, it's kind of hard to make sure you get enough fiber, don't get too much fat, and get good nutrition without compromising the quality.

Vegetarian So sad.. Jan 06 2008

*sigh* This one's tough. I myself have eaten rabbit before. Just cause an animal is cute it doesn't mean it's not eaten. Having been raised 1/2 of my life in the south, I've had to eat animals I've grown close too as well.

Let me just say, that despite all the different opinions about what's safer/cleaner etc. I think the one thing that I gained out of having to watch an animal that you grew close to get slaughtered and then having it served to me later, is an unbelievable appreciation for what it gave so that I could eat.

The sacrifice is, I think, a figment of human survival instinct and a testament to the humans ability to understand that some deeds take exactly that, sacrifice. If you couldn't do it (which I understand) then you would suffer the consequences (like, starving if it was your only source of sustenance).

Although some would cry and consider that a horror, I can't imagine that someone starving in another country would consider it so horrible. There are so many worse things a person can go through. There are countries where kids watch their whole families get raped/shot & "ethnically cleansed" by people who thinks they just "don't belong". The kids are lucky if they survive.

Personally, I know now that I could do the job if I HAD to, but I am thankful there are people out there that get paid to do it. I pay. Gladly.

Thanks for sharing the story, it's very thought provoking.

I think I am going to switch soon, but I am not sure whether I'll go the almond breeze route (which I haven't tasted yet), or the soymilk route.

Hi Michelle,

I know how you feel. Here's a script I played out in my head:

Evil Co-worker: "Here, have a piece of *insert cake/cookie/bad food here* "

Me: "No thanks, *insert excuse (or not) here*"

Evil Co-worker: "C'mon!"

Me: "No, really, I shouldn't but thanks"

Evil Co-worker: *Insert evil reason why they think you should here*

Repeat exchanges until I lose patience. And then comes the "Grand Finale":

Me: "Fine! *almost snatch evil food from co-worker, then proceeds to throw it in the trash in front of his/her face*

Bet you Evil Co worker never makes the same mistake again.

Muahaha, I think I'll use this one. I'm not kidding. I'll do what I have to for my health/to meet my goal on my terms.

I'm have the same philosophy as Molly, I don't get to excited about paying money for something I can make at home. So, if I go out, it's not likely to be a sandwich unless there isn't much else to choose from.

I prefer the sweet onion chicken teriyaki on wheat, with almost all the veggies. I don't feel like I have to add any extra sauces. I have trouble eating a sandwich that's pretty dry (I like my mayo).

I think muffin top/camel toe (which is gross) could be the side effect of a few things:

1. Being broke and not being able to buy new clothes.

2. IMO the most likely: DENIAL. "If I can still SQUEEZE my rear into this size, then I MUST not be gaining as much weight as I THINK, right?
