Hate to tell you this but I understand that soy milk and soy products deplete testosterone (sp).

Better keep you man/men away from it.

Life is crazy but good.  Working out very hard.  Lots of core work and running.  Runs consist of interval sprints, interval hills and a long run (under 11 min miles).  I've reduced the time in my long runs by a min/mi. in the last two months.  Weight's not coming off like I'd like bu teating well.

Last week 221

This week 223

Oh well.  WW, I was probably too aggressive with my labor day goal.

Contrats to everyone on the level of work.  I can't understand half of what you're saying, but it sounds good.

Welcome to all the new lads.  Good luck.

I'm busting my a** at a new business.  Don't have time to write much on this site.  But I'm keepin' up with the running and I'm on the abs diet.  I like it.  All clean food.  Doing it for 2 weeks an d it has cut down my desire for bad carbs, etc.  If interested you can learn about it at www.menshealth.com

Wili: you're doing a great job.  AS a leader, runner and as our unelected and underappreciated historian.  Thanks.

RK:  lets do that race at Christmas.  I'm ready to sign up.  Do you have the web-site for the run?  Please drop me a note.  Here's my e-mail address johnbcunningham@comcast.net

Final   weight 223.

rk described to a T what I've been goin' through thiese last three months.  Very small weight loss but continued heavy workout routine that includes 3 days of running and 3 cross train per week.  I continue to drop fat and replace with muscle and a reduced waist line.  I also continue to stay healthy and injury free as I try to listen to my body, go slow, be patient and not get frustrated by little setbacks.

I'm rededicating myself to another round of "BIG" fat loss for the Labor Day Challenge.  My goal is to be at 205 which represents 6 lbs/mo/ which I believe is do-able.  Since Monday I've been eating 1,500 cals or less/day.  In April I got my BMI down to 18% from over 30 when I started last October.  My new BMI goal is now 11% which is the lowest recommended level for my age group.  I don't know if I will achieve this BMI by Labor Day but I will be working on it----hard.  I've  ordered the book "The Abs Diet" and plan to follow closely.  I've been doing a lot of circuit training lately.  Different types of aerobic exercises with weighs and high reps.  My core is taking a beating but I feel really good.  My trainer friend at the YMCA turned me on to the following web site.  I've only spent a short time with it but it is full of great stuff.  Check it out!

http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/excercise.htm l

I'm OK with any direction you guys want to go with as respects the thread.  Count me in.  I ain't goin' nowhere.

I know this is gettin' a little old but I can't thank you guys enough for your input on real life stuff, your successes, your failures, your fears, etc.  It gives me a high level of belief that if you can do it so can I.

Wili!  You are the man.  Kudos on the "1".

You got me pumped.

Hello All:

Sorry I missed the weigh in.  Been on vacation.  I have no idea what my weight is.  I will update next Wed. when I get back to the regular routine but I don't expect any major changes.

I ran my 5K today in the Fort Lauderdale Freedom run.  It was 85 degrees at 7:00 AM and the humidity was brutal.  I've done longer runs so was apprehensive about my first official 5K.  Goal was to break 30 mins. and came in 27.30.  Finished 7th in my age group out of about 20.  It was a great time and all the hard work and preparation was certainly worth it.  It was great to read all the great stuff from this last week.  The entire weight loss, training thing has been a very cathartic experience for me and it's cool to see other guys going through the same thing.

"No matter how old I get, the race remains one of life's most rewarding experiences. My times become slower and slower, but the experience of the race is unchanged: each race a drama, each race a challenge, each race stretching me in one way or another, and each race telling me more about myself and others."

For those thinking about running for the first time.  Take it slow.  Check out some running books on Amazon.  You can get used books for 3 bucks.  Also look at Jeff Galloway's web site. He works with beginners all the time.  I'm reading one of his called "You Can Do It" all about running your first Marathon.  He also has books on Half Mary's etc.  I start his 28 week program with 4 runs a week starting in August.  I've been building for it for the last few months and feel real good about my chances  to "Do It".

Keep your head up.

Rob and rk:  I certainly am a pugnacious SOB.  Sorry if I offended.

After trying whole wheat pasta I can't eat any other.  Great with homemade meatballs, grilled veggies and a nice red sauce.  Domino's is coming out with a whole wheat pizza (or maybe it's Pizza Hut--whatever).  I gotta stay away from white breads and pasta (the sugar kills).

I'm in Fort Lauderdale next week and running a 5k Saturday the 28th.

rk, I look forward to running with you when you come down and also having you and the family over for a little Christmas cheer.  If anyone else is going to be in the neighborhood we can have a party.

I'm running the Sarasota Marathon on 2/15/09 so I could definitley do a 5k in December, '08.  Before you sign up let me see what else might be available.  I belong to the ManaSota Track Club.  You can check out there site http://www.manasotatrackclub.org/

Since joining this thread near the end of last year the total amount of new information that I've acquired as respects "FAT LOSS", nutrition and good health in general is truly amazing.

I started CC last Oct. and I've dropped over 44 lbs.  My goal is to lose an addition 24 lbs. to get to my goal of 200.  I work out 5 or 6 x's a week religiously with that ultimate goal in mind.  Without this group I don't think I'd be in this position.  Feeling good but still motivated to accomplish more.

Matter of fact most if not all the guys that started 4-6 months ago are the guys who ..."are in a much different place"... as described by alexrob.  But we also used to be the fat guys at 50+ excess who couldn't walk a mile let alone run one.

That being said, I'm not completely opposed to breaking this thread up either.  The problem lies with administration.  It takes work to keep track of this stuff and Wili is the only one that does it.  Pink, our leader is MIA so we seem to be struggling a bit.

However, before we ditch this group I'd encouage the new guys to go back in the thread and read the valuable info. that has been contributed over the last months including web-sites for extra help, phord, wili, pink, alpman, rk's stuff, etc.  Maybe after reading the new guys might have a greater level of appreciation for where we came from.  Why bounce guys who have done what you want to do.

Alexrob, thanks for your note.  We need to shake this thing up.  We need a little emotion out of people.  Alex has the quihones to ask "What do we all think?"  Well????

Peace'

This would be considered interval--power training.  Keep track of what you can so that you can compare with the next time you do this activity.  Number of intervals, time and distance for each and total, heart beat, etc.

Good luck

I had my BMI done with calipers by a dietitian at the YMCA.  Came in at 18.7%.  It's probably in the 85-90 percentile.  That's pretty cool.  At one time I was over 30%.  Weight understandably is coming off slower but thats OK cause it's pretty obvious that I'm losing fat-fat-fat-fat-fat.

Good to see so many people running.  WW don't worry about not being able to finish according to plan.  The key is to move at 70% of heart rate for 40+ min.  Next time go out 1.5 mi. and then walk back.  You're doing the right thing.

Good work rk.  You'll do a 1/2 mary with no sweat.  I did 2:13 so you'll do under 2 hr. easy.  My goal in the marathon is 4 hrs.  It's great to sign up for an event because then you know you have the goal out there and it's always in the back of your mind.  My goal prevents me from skipping workouts.  It's just little improvements at a time.

I hear a lot of frustration out there with a lack of progress.  This is natural for me too.  But I need to remember that if I'm sticking to my diet/workout objectives I know I'll get there.  I know that I'm heading in the right direction.  I just need to stay consistent, remain patient and stay committed to the PRIZE.

Phord's comments about a slowing metabolism and being cold (I was freezing at Augusta) if accurate, this would mean that our bodies are fortifying and protecting itself against a calorie reduction.  So only natural that we would plateau.

I have a tendency to look at my progress by looking only at the last couple weeks.  I need to look back from the start of this journey.  I'm 55 years old (soon to be 56).  6' 3.5" and I used to weigh 268 lbs (last year) and I was getting bigger.  I was fat, sloppy and sick.  Now I'm at about 225 and heading toward my goal of 200.  I feel younger, stronger and healthier and I have a lot of you guys to thank for your motivation, drive and desire to Just Do It.

I have a goal to run a marathon next year when I was unable to run a mile last year.  My brother asked me if my knees hurt after a long run.  I tell him f*#@ing A.  Everything hurts.  But you know, the body is an incredible machine and it recovers usually within 48 hrs.

I was an athlete in highschool/college.  I started somking, drinking (other stuff), chasing girls and everything changed.

My goal now is to live a long healthy life.  Its real simple, you don't see many 300 lbs dudes out there over 65 years old because----they die.  I don't want to be one of them.  My wife of 29 years (can you imagine putting up with me for that long?) is a petite girl.  I've thought of her having to lift me around as an old fat guy and it's not a pretty vision.

You young guys need to do it now.  Don't wait till you hit your fifties.  I regret burning all those years.

On a lighter note, Augusta kicked everyone's ass including mine.  The elevation change from the club house to Amen corner is about 10 sorties.  Amazing.  I collapsed at the end of each day.  Saturday and Sunday were two of the toughest workout days I had this year.

Keep on keepin'on.

Running Motivation:

Hitting That Big Old Wall How to Keep Going When You Feel Like Stopping
-- By Julie Isphording, Olympic Marathoner

Just about everyone has heard of the "Wall," as in "hitting the wall." And lots of us - in running and in life - have run straight into it. Head on.

A wall is the point in a race (or in life) where you're used up. You're officially done. You feel as if you are draining away into a little puddle on the ground. Your legs don't respond to the word "go." You vow never to do this again.

Although I hope you never have a wall get between you and a goal, here are some tricks I've learned from running that can help you get over your own wall when it's in the way:

Keep going regardless
Promise yourself that, no matter what, you will press on, even if you are walking, crawling, or puttering. In the Boston Marathon in 1993, I was running so slowly to the finish that I felt like I was actually going backwards. Stay on your feet. Eyes straight ahead. Move.

Don't think
Just go. Do not dwell on how overwhelmingly awful you feel. Focus on the cheering crowds, your friends and family waiting at the finish, the cool water, the trees... anything.

Try bribery
Tell yourself, "Self, when I get done with this, I'm going to buy you a new car, a new house, whatever you want."

Word-watch
Watch the negative words and thoughts. Think instead about all the successes you have had. How about all those hills you conquered? All those long workouts you endured? You are a great person. Relish those thoughts.

Negotiate with yourself
Give yourself permission to simply go to the next water stop, or to the next milestone, or even just the end of the day. Keep repeating that strategy until you see the finish line. Just one more mile before you say one more mile!

If it was easy, everyone could do it. You are the one who will make it. And don't forget the finish line pose!

7 days away shouldn't be a problem but adjust based on how your body feels.   Always err on the side of going slower and shorter.  You won't fall behind as far as you would if you get injured from over doing it on your return.
