Well, week 1 of Phase 1 is over, and I've lost 2 lbs as of today.

I found a good Phase 1 soup, but one batch apparently makes 14 servings...

If anyone wants it, it's available for this year for free on this website: www.americastestkitchen.com . It's their White Chicken Chili.

But take it from me, and cut the recipe by at least half. LOL!!

so how worried should I be if the scale isn't moving very much? I'm not cheating at all, so I don't quite understand why the weight isn't coming off very quickly.

And how worried should I be about struggling to hit 1200 calories?

I REALLY want this diet to work for me. so far, nothing else has. my doctor is aware of these things, but it's still very discouraging and very frustrating.

any advice or helpful tips would be appreciated.

Day 6, so far so good.

I'm not missing carbs much at all, except for my whole wheat bread.

I'm still struggling to get up to 1200 calories a day. I'm not terribly hungry, but it's quite difficult to get there.  I've heard people say that you shouldn't worry about calories, but still.... not hitting 1200 seems awfully low.

Scale hasn't moved much, but I still have another 15 days to go.

Day 3, and so far so good.

I'm finding it sort of difficult to eat enough to get more than 1200 calories per day. I finish a meal of 1.5-2 cups of veg and a protein, and MAN, I'm full.

I do find it difficult to plan a good lunch. What suggestions do you guys have? Anything particularly easy and tasty?

How is it that broccoli or cabbage could hinder weight loss? What do they contain that has that effect??? Don't worry, I'm not trying to argue with you!! I'm just super-curious...I can't imagine finding out that stuffing myself with broccoli instead of something yummier could've been a bad idea!

Broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, and others are called "goitrogenic" foods. In raw form, they can hinder thyroid function, which slows your metabolism and contributes to weight gain.

Now, that's just the raw form. If they're cooked (steaming works too), it seems to deactivate it. I think you have to eat a pretty large amount of raw goitrogenic veg in order to get that effect, but for hypothyroid patients, it's something to watch out for. Our thyroids are screwed up as it is... no additional help needed!

As a side note, soy interferes with the thyroid as well. I have no idea how much will cause problems, though. Since I'm on replacement therapy, I tend to avoid it as much as I can. It's in nearly everything (including my vitamins!!!), so it's quite difficult.

Day 1 - so far so good. I didn't miss carbs too much, though finding out how to navigate the new diet and multiple meals per day is a bit rough.

I do wonder, though.... what should an average Phase 1 diet look like on the analysis? How much of my diet should be composed of carbs, protein, and fat? I know that this phase is intended to cut carbs down quite a lot, but how much is it supposed to leave in?

can anyone explain things a little, or point to a resource (post, thread, link, whatever)?

Hello everyone,

I'm starting South Beach. I have hypothyroidism AND PCOS, and haven't been able to shift the 40 lbs I gained before the hypothyroidism was caught. I've only recently been diagnosed with PCOS, so the first order of business is losing the extra "me."

Since it's been so troublesome, I have a difficult time thinking that this will actually work, especially since our diet (my husband's and mine) is rather healthy to begin with. SB won't be terribly different from how we eat from day to day; will it really work?

Anyway, here I am, and here I go.

I'm 28, and I go by lynnoliver when online.

My husband is becoming a bit more supportive, seeing as he's gained quite a bit of weight over the previous semester and holidays, and now he's working on a belly of his own. (har har)

So we're increasing our intake of fruits and vegetables to at least 5 servings per day, cutting down our eating out to 1 time TOTAL per month (save up and make it more special). Being super busy makes fast food very tempting a lot of the time, so we have to be more diligent about that.

I'm on Armour thyroid (for now), but I suspect that my endocrinologist will want to change my meds after this last blood test. Since becoming (more) stabilized on these meds, my weight GAIN has stopped (hooray!), so now it's time to start losing the weight. I've made calendars, check-off lists, and all sorts of other things for myself, so we'll see how it goes this time.

Weight this morning: 161.5 (which is 4 lbs different from yesterday, so I think it's water weight)

Thanks for the encouragement so far, guys!

Could I join in?

I'm currently 5'4", 165.5 lbs. I would like to lose 40 lbs total (and weigh 125 lbs), but would even settle for 30 lbs. Losing weight, by all reports, will take longer than average for me because I have hypothyroidism.

CC says I can eat 1250 calories per day to lose all the weight by September 19, but I'm ignoring that date.

I've joined the Guide to Health study (www.guide-to-health.com) to help keep me on track and accountable. It's an 18 month diet and exercise study, so that gives me a good long time to form healthy habits. :)

At this point, I'm working to increase my fiber and protein intakes and get a program in place for working out. It's a huge struggle, because I LOVE to bake, and I LOVE what I bake (hehehe).

My good friend MollyMouser pointed me to this thread, so here's hoping that I can do this. She's been wonderfully encouraging, and very inspiring!
