Hey Sorry about the job! That sucks! I have a BMUS - but mine was research based - 2 dissertations in my last year! Luckily - ended up with a job in research. I'd suggest applying for everything and anything...there are jobs out there. I'm moving to a new job next week in fact. You just need to focus your efforts to your CV, get together with some recruitment agencies as they can really help. In the meantime - xmas work. Good luck! |

| The Lounge | "Obesity Tax" | Jan 05 2009 11:17 (UTC) |

Well, why stop at Soda??? Why not tax fast food? That would make it a little more of a treat...rather than the often cheaper isoption. In my opinion, if alcohol is taxed - then why not tax 'bad' foods and drinks? For most, alcohol is seen as a luxury, bought little and often - mainly due to its price. If fast food was to follow the same path then there would probably be the same effect. At least then the people who are eating/drinking junk all the time would be at least contributing to the cost they will impose on the system. Being British, this system is the NHS, which is coming increasingly under strain from obesity - with more and more children coming in each year with weight related conditions. Junk food/drink should be seen as a luxury and I think the only way to curb obesity is to make the HSSF food/drink more expensive While im on this note, how about more offers on the healthy foods/activities. Gyms here for one could make it cheaper and easier to get fit.

| The Lounge | Can't stop shopping?? | Dec 03 2008 14:28 (UTC) |

I have a major addiction to shopping...i'll always buy something at the weekend. Its worse now Ive lost weight, but thats mainly as I now have no clothes that fit...even my jeans fall down with a belt. I think I'll calm down once ive got my new, slimmer wardrobe sorted though. It is an addiction...I just love the feeling of having something new and the buzz that comes from the whole shopping experience. One thing that I will say is that sales dont really do it for me. If I wanted something I would have bought it, so there is usually nothing in the sales that I like. If I go to sales, I usually walk straight past the reductions to the full price. I also ALWAYS make sure that all my bills and travel are paid before I shop. I have them come out of my account automatically so that Im not tempted to spend that money. |

| Weight Loss | Does anyone here think that girls look better a little mushy? | Dec 01 2008 16:19 (UTC) |

When I was 200lbs, UK size 18, I wanted to be a UK 12. Now Im pretty much there...my target has changed to a 10. I dont think I'll go any lower as it really wont suit me. I think I'll be comfortable at that size. As for being 'ripped' - too much effort! Nicely toned will do. I couldnt stand the thought of spending my days working on my abs! |

| The Lounge | Obese have right to two airline seats for price of one | Nov 28 2008 10:25 (UTC) |

I understand that...but I didnt set that rate - its the standard testing weight for aircraft. If you are using more fuel, why shouldnt you pay more than someone who is using a lot less? Id be happy to stand on scales to get a % reduction on my fuel surcharge - and Im not exactly proud of my weight |

| The Lounge | Obese have right to two airline seats for price of one | Nov 27 2008 10:33 (UTC) |

I believe, if an illness or disability is responsible for someones size - they shouldnt have to pay. If it is the other way round - they should. It is a lifestyle choice for most after all - I can say that having been obese in the past. If someone has decided to lead a life where putting on weight is the norm and have a disability as a result - they should pay. I know its harsh, but it is fair - especially to those who do not choose to we overweight. That said, Ive known people with thyroid issues who can more or less maintain a 'normal' weight. In that sense - apart from those with Prader Willi - people DO make a decision on what they eat and in that sense, can avoid obesity. I also have met many individuals who cannot walk - again - not overweight. So from that angle its a completely different story. Another option is to charge based on weight above or below the standard testing weight for aircraft, which I think is around 185lbs. So you pay a standard amount for your seat and have a reduction/addition to your fuel surcharge. This is due to the fact that, if everyone on the plane was over 185lbs, for example, the plane would require more fuel - therefore the journey would cost more. There could be an clause here that states the disability issue. I think, as obesity is expected to reach a crisis point by 2050 (60% of men, 50% of women and 25% of under 16's), it is time to start taking some action - not just with aircraft travel, but in all forms of public transport. I live in the UK and it is quite painful sometimes to watch people squeeze themselves into the seats on the underground - and also to watch those either side be pushed across. Finally, I believe that - especially from looking at those stats - current obesity levels are only rising due to the society we live in. For a great number of people, sedentary lifestyles are the norm. If society continues to cater for overweight being the 'norm' - many people may not see the need to change. Therefore - society must change before the population does. |

My way of dealing is that I tell myself that Im not going to restrict myself on x-mas day. Its one day in the year where I can just relax and enjoy myself. My knowing this, I find its easier to cope with being good the rest of the holiday period. |

But some parents have to plan activities - especially if parents are working. I do think aswell, in some cases, kids find computer games more entertaining than playing outdside |

I think what you have all said is very interesting - you all seem to have the same idea - that its the parents and the lack of activity. Thinking about the lack of activity, I read recently that one in 5 kids prefers to communicate online - rather than face to face. I think this might have something to do with it too. Children no longer have to face there peers to socialise - they can create an avatar that represents how they feel - not how they look. I strongly believe that until actvity is made 'fun' in the eyes of young kids - they are going to stick with what they know - the computer screen. Anyone got any thoughts about making activies truely enjoyable for young kids... |

Thanks for all your feedback My feelings are that as more and more restrictions are put in place, childhood obesity has become a greater problem. Surely, if it was the cause, or a catalyst, this wouldnt be the case. Do you think that advertising things like portion control and 'good' foods would have a better effect?

| Weight Loss | What's the best way to lose the fat inbetween a woman's thighs? | Aug 19 2008 11:55 (UTC) |

Yep - I've been there. I went to Italy last June and was in so much pain when walking - which I did a lot of! I tended to stay in linen trousers...just to stop the rubbing! 42lbs down and its getting better - I can wear dresses and skirts with minimal rubbing! The only way I did it was through persistent diet and exercise... Concerntrate on toning that area through exercise also.

| Weight Loss | Brand New...need friends and accountability. Any short ladies out there around 200 lbs? | Aug 19 2008 11:49 (UTC) |

Hi I understand completely...I was just short of 200lbs - lost 42lbs so far over 14 months - so it has been a slow process. I'm currently working in the media industry...notorious for parties and lunches...so I completely sympathize. The best thing I can say to you is it will take time... Exercise was also a struggle for me...I get up at 6.30am as is and then get home around 7pm - but after a LOT of push...Its now part of my evening routine and definately helps. In terms of the Pizza thing...I would say limit portions. I still have the occasional Pizza...but just make sure its only a maximum of 2 slices. I'd be happy to answer any questions and offer support throughout your journey |

I really only use my scales for validation...just to know the numbers are getting to a healthy range. Im already looking better in clothes and people are commenting - which is nice - but seeing those numbers go down just adds to the amazing sense of achievement...Ive lost 42lbs over the last 14 months...only another 16lbs to go...I know this bit's going to be hard!
