Weight Loss My Mother, and Cultural Attitudes Toward Weight Loss Nov 01 2007

Look back at all these replies!  They could fill a book!  Bottom line is: we don't need to A) tell our mothers everything, ESPECIALLY once we're grown and gone, and B) listen to them rant in response.  If you are old enough to go for your PhD, you're old enough to tell Mama to shove it when she starts in.  Better yet---just don't mention weight/fitness if you KNOW (as you surely must by now) that it will set her off.  You two view weight differently---fine!  Don't give her the opportunity to air her views.  But if she does---don't take the bait, just laugh and change the subject!

Beans, beans, good for your heart...:):)

I love LOVE lentil curry---with or without brown rice.  Dice a baked sweet potato over your lentil curry, plop some yogurt on top, sprinkle toasted pumpkin or sunflower seeds, and munch away!

Have you ever baked a spaghetti squash?  When it's done you can toss the "innards" with olive oil, cumin, salt, pepper, and it is sooooo good.  Or top it with spaghetti sauce right out of the jar.

And go get some of those Morningstar brand "crumbles"---you can use them like ground beef in soup or lasagne, without the gross greasy fat.

OUCH!!!  Just read girlier's post up there somewhere and am feeling SO ashamed!  I confess that I have many pairs of fine Italian leather shoes and boots in my closet, plenty of Coach bags, and (worst of all) a black female mink jacket given to me by my husband for our 20th anniversary.  And the cappucino-colored nappa-leather stroller with the huge fox collar---oh, my God, what was I thinking?  I thought I was such a SAINT for not eating cruelly-slaughtered meat, and all the while...oh, dear.

So, question, everyone: if I swear to never again purchase leather or fur, can I be absolved of prior sins and keep my pretty-pretties?  Or would a really good person give these away to charity?  If I do that, though, they'll still be worn by someone, and the poor animals are just as dead as they ever were...

I suppose you can all tell I'm a Catholic.  This guilt is a terrible thing!  I hereby vow I will never again buy leather or fur.  But can I please keep the things I already own...?  They're good enough to last the rest of my life anyway.

I am definitely intrigued and will read the book soon!  I've been pescetarian for about 15 years now, still doing dairy and eggs, although that may change after reading the book...?!?  Luckily, I have a source for fresh eggs---a friend raises chickens on her little farm (really just a huge backyard) and I know for a fact that these hens range free, eat vegetarian feed, and live a happy life while laying their eggs!  They even all have names, so when I scramble some of their products I like to wonder who laid 'em---was it Henrietta, Guinevere, Lucia, etc.?

Dairy is a problematic issue.  I've switched to soy milk and "tofutti" cream cheese and sour cream, use olive oil instead of butter, but when it comes to that first cup of morning coffee, there's nothing like (organic, of course) half-and-half!

Bottom line, I think that whatever we do, be it much or little, to be mindful of what we eat and where it came from is a step in the right direction.

I'm 5'4" and 125, and that's where I think I'll stay, God willin', until I die if healthy old age.  I did the starvation fad in high school (down to 100), gained 29 pounds with pregnancy 15 years ago, but basically this is the size I "default" back to and I actually love my bod!  In the past few years my boobs have grown (?) from a B to a D---don't ask why!  But my waist and butt have not budged, and with exercise to keep toned, I feel pretty okay at 40.  My concern now is nutrition...I've discovered soy, have given up mammal meats (still do fish) and have decided that "white carbs" are a maturing woman's mortal nemesis!  Not near menopause yet, so all this could change later, but for now, I'm more into the quality of food than the quantity.

Weight Loss Why are thin peoples concerns either ignored or taken as insults? Nov 01 2007

One further thought, missreporter---why even come up with replies about why you don't want to have that doughnut?  What happened to simply, "No thanks!"---???  Why do we all feel so darned compelled to offer explanations for what is nobody's business?  When I was attempting to moderate my alcohol intake a few years ago, I found that any "excuses" raised suspicion, but a simple, "Oh, no thank you" shut 'em up and brooked no nosiness.  If anyone was so rude as to press, I just smiled and changed the subject.

I'm new (first post, in fact) and this thread interests me because I've noticed this, as well.  Of course heavier people don't want to hear the sighs and moans of the thin---why would they?  While it's perfectly true that thin people may have painful issues (whether disease-based, like anorexia, cancer, bulimia, or simple genetics, like my SKELETON of a mother who didn't date until she was 27 because she was so ashamed of being so bony, in the Fleshy Fifties!)---the fact is, heavy folks may be jealous of the skinnies, but it's NEVER the reverse.  What painfully thin person ever fantasizes about looking like Kirstie Alley?  The solution, socially, is of course to never allude to weight in any way.  On boards like these, well, hard to say:  maybe calorie-count is trying to be too many things to too many people, and the Fat Faction and the Thin Faction may really never find much conversational common ground.
