I think the biggest problem when you are in college is how busy you are and going from class to class...you get really hungry.  One of my really good friends and I went to school together and we would always have lunch in between classes...Unfortunately we always ate at the schools fastfood places.  We both gained weight.  I have started to bring tons of snacks with me every where I go.  I take it to school and to work and then I cook a "real" meal for dinner.  So, what I bring is prepackaged baby carrots, pre-cut and packaged apples, yoplait light and fat-free yogurt, string cheese, dried apricots, dill pickle slices, and measured 2 TBSP portions of peanut butter.  All of this food lasts me from the time I wake up until I have dinner.  The best part is that it all adds up to only 600 calories and I didn't have to prepare any of it.  I do not eat it all at once.  I generally have the yogurt for breakfast at about 8am, I go to class at 11am and have the apples, get out of class at 12:30 and have the carrots and peanut butter along with the apricots and cheese.  After my last class at 3:30 I might have the dill pickle slices.  Then I go home and make dinner...either pasta and salad, baked potato and veggies, veggie chili, veggie burritos, etc...By the way I am vegetarian.  However, you need to find the healthy foods that work for you.  A girl at my work thinks what I eat is gross and asked me, When do you eat "real" food?  I said, I am a vegetarian...this is real food.  The fact is if you want to lose weight and maintain, you either need to change your eating habits or start exercising more to combat the crappy food you might be eating...Just to be healthy, do a bit of both.  Good luck, and don't worry, everyone has this problem when they go off to college.

Weight Loss How much can I expect by Christmas?? Nov 04 2008

That's fine and all GIJane...However, the question posed was not how to lose weight...it was if I get my act together how much can I lose by Christmas?!  Everyone knows that you need a "healthy lifestyle" to lose weight...as there are a million news articles about it everytime you turn around.  This site tells you that losing 2 lbs a week is "healthy" and in order to do that you have to burn 7000 calories over what you intake per week.  It is just math and a biological fact...as 1 lb = 3500 calories.  Sure, you can eat 2000 calories, it doesn't have to be 1200 a day, but then you need to burn 3000 calories a day to lose that 2 lbs a week that this web site tells you to lose safely.  Of course, as always, there is no quick fix and the only way to maintain a goal weight is to change your lifestyle.  Once you reach it, figure out how many calories/day you burn and then eat that many during the day.  Don't give up everything you love, moderation is the key.  The biggest deal is will power.

I am 5'5 and I am currently trying to lose the same amount as you...It sounds like your calories are a bit high for the sedentary lifestyle you have...In order to lose one pound/week you need to burn 3500 calories a week over what you consume.  That means everyday you need to burn 500 calories over what you consume.  If you consume 1700 calories a day, you need to burn 2200 calories a day to have a 500 calorie deficit.  You can either cut your calories down to about 1300-1500 or you can start exercising more.  My doctor told me to do exercises that keep your heart rate in the 120's and do them for a longer period of time and I would burn fat and not just glucose.  I have noticed that on the eliptical machine people are really pushing it, while this is good for your heat...it doesn't burn fat as well.  Slow and steady.  Lift weights.  Also, drink tons of water.  Eat throughout the day...small stuff, carrot sticks, apple slices, string cheese, yogurt, nuts.  Stay away from eating out at restaurants, candy, sodas, etc.  The nice thing about these small items is, you fill your need to eat, and they have very low calories.  It's not just important to lower your calories, but also the amount of fat you consume.  Good Luck.  Be Healthy.

Morganbclaw is right...depending on your plan and your metabolism, you should be able to lose 2 lbs/wk, which should put you in at about 15lbs.  However, that means you have to really eat well and start exercising more.  In order to lose 2 lbs a week, you need to burn 1000 calories more a day than you consume.  Realistically, you need to eat around 1200 calories and burn 2200.  This is because one pound is equal to 3500 calories.  If you eat 3,500 calories more than your body needs, you will put on about 1 pound. If you use up 3,500 calories more than you eat, you will lose about 1 pound in weight...In one week, to lose 2 lbs, you need to burn 7000 calories over your intake amount.  I am the same height at you  and weight about 150.  I am just starting to try and lose 2lbs per week until Christmas too...GOOD LUCK!  :)

Weight Loss What might my size be at 5'2" and 110 pounds? Nov 02 2008

I'd have to agree, sizes are tricky and vary so much.  I weighed 100 lbs and I am 5'5...I was wearing a size 5...I had a pair of size 3 pants and they were tight.  I have a small frame too.  I have a pair of 5 capris and fit in them when I weigh 135lbs.  I just buy whatever fits and looks good.  I try and not worry about sizes...just what I look like in the clothes...and out of them.

I have not weighed in this week...no scale in my house! I go to my parents this weekend and so I will weigh in on Sun. However, I feel good and my body is looking better. I started about a month ago at 145 and 2 weeks ago I was 140...so I'm hoping to have made the jump into the 130's. I am not exercising though. No time with school. Goal is still 125 by x-mas. Probably gonna need to start doing some sit ups at the least. Good luck, and good results so far, keep it up! Might I recommend the new 100 calorie pack snacks...satisfying and low cal.

I agree with everyone completely...I also know that feeling of "needing" to look thin.  I was a dancer for 20 years and I am only 30 years old now.  There is so much importance given to thin people that are famous and it is in our faces everyday.  I think about food all of the time.  I write down what I eat all of the time.  I am on a diet.  However, I eat really healthy most of the time.  I currently weigh 140, which is a healthy BMI and I am a slim girl even at 5'5.  That probably sounds heavy to many, but I am fairly muscular from all that dance.  When I was 22 I only weighed 100 pounds and it was not cute.  Every bone in my body stuck out...every bone!  This is disturbing to me because I hear so many people on t.v. and the radio (usually men) say that a woman that is 5'5 or 5'7 should weigh 100-115!!!  What the hell?  Now, I am trying to lose a bit of weight because I feel most comfortable at 125ish.  I usually do not weigh 140, usually low 130's.  Anyway, my point is the same as all the others, 126.5 is a fabulous weight for someone that is 5'7, that is actually very thin.  I know for myself at 126 I am wearing a size 4/5...men really like a little bit of meat, an ass and some boobs.  We are women, we are supposed to have some curves.  Just be healthy.
