Fitness Confused -- Cardio AND weights for weight loss, or just cardio? Mar 02 2009
18:05 (UTC)

i have had similar results as you...and i have been at the same weight for over a year...i have lost approx. 100 lbs.(since aug 06) and still have 40 more to go but i have been at the same weight since nov 07!!!  and i do weight trainng 3 X per week cardio 6 x per week  each for 60-75 minutes a session.......its very ver frustrating but somehow my calorie intake somehow is more than i think.......my endocrinologist also tells me the same thing that must be  taking in more calories than burning.......it pisses me off but the sad fact is ...its simple arithmetic.........althoug i believe that i so screwed up my metabolism that anything over 1500 calories a day puts me in a deficit.........so what do we do.........what i do is...i show up and keep trying because i am so much beter than when i was 100 lbs heavier........and i also think..if i didnt exercise than i would be really screwed.......i think if i even look at a slice of pizza i would gain weight!!  keep it up...talk it out...but consider the alternative of being the way you once were.......and the alternative is worse... at least thats my opinin...good luck...

ok...thanks for your reply...they also suggest a carb powder to make a drink with...again...your thoughts.........prior to this...ive taken a 12 ounce glass of milk with a hard boiled egg....but on paper it seems there are more grams of protein with the powder.......im wondering if a 3 ounce piece of  chicken would also suffice....thanks

i am concerned....i know im eating more than 1500 cals per day but what if im not and burning the 2700............shouldnt i be losing lbs. i mean simple arithmetic says so......but i am worried now that i screwed up my metabolism by excercising too much.........that sounds so screwy.......i mean i love to excercise now...........several years ago i was a 300plus couch potato........anyway ill be advised by your replies.thank-you and ill try to mix it up...D

THANK YOU for the help and advice...during the past year i have stayed at the same weight ....within a 3lb. plus or minus....the only drop below 212 had been after a few days of drinking an over abundance of water....i will try your suggestions but its funny about how i am now compared to 3 years ago  i.e. i feel bad when i dont excercise......i will try it for several weeks.thanks D

it seems when i do squats and rows.  i tried something called a "pendlay row" and wrecked myself on that.   i visit this rx excercise site and its been helpful but i really think i need a trainer but i couldnt afford one let alone go to a gym...so i look for help here.  i'll look the book up you suggested...and i am convinced i really effed up my metabolism with the cardio i was doing and now i cant lose weight for nothing...i mean when i do the simple math on calories in and calories out i should be at 2 lbs. per week.and guess what....nothing.....im doing something wrong....maybe i sleep walk.and knock off a side of beef while im sleeping.lol.......but i never find any bones the next morning....

ok.checking in again at the end of week two...lost 3 more lbs.  so it's been 10 lbs. in 2 weeks and i must say a great way to break that plateau i was on ...it also is good for a person like myself who needs to be on specific guidelines...it seems when i get to be put in charge i start to change things to suit me and then chaos ensues...but following what was in black and white fits me...i will take it a day at a time and  i will continue on stage one or another week....i think its what i need to break away from some cravings,  although i wonder about the lack of fruit in the diet...but next week ill add my 2 apples a day...(to keep the doctor away) lol  thanks D

just figured i'd post the progress...i started last thursday and after completing the first week i have lost 7 lbs.  it's a funny thing how the brain operates....i guess i needed the restrictions to break the plateau that i had been on for over 4 months....its a good way to jump start and get away from the white flour, white sugar etc.  and i must say that the fruit abstinence had me wondering but i guess that all the natural sugars in them arent a good thing when the body is trying to break away from the sugar dependance...  well enough from me because its only been a week...one day at a time...thanks D

i thank you all for the replies...my stats are male age 56 5'8" 220 lbs.  i weighed approx 310 lbs aug 06 ..need to lose 40 more..  weight training 3 x per week approx 1 hour.   6 X per week elliptical and treadmill approx 1-1 1/2 hours.  i am currently trying to restructure my diet because i just cant understand how i could have gained 5 lbs...  somewhere along the line i mustve messed up my metabolism...i at one point was doing 3 hours  of weight training and cardio  but was told i was over doing it...so i cut back....i must say that ive come to enjoy the excercising but i wonder if my "metabolism" got used to how much i was doing and im not burning what i think im burnig.i dont know.it seems im in a real mental rut right now.

i figured my calories from this site based on my height and weight and activity level.  it came to around 2900... so i figured(which is probably wrong!) to knock off 500 cals a day X 7 days would bring a deficit  of 3500 cals which is a lb.  and then with the approx 1000 cals burned per day excercising that would do another 2 lbs.  and even if i went out to a dinner or something like that, i would still be ahead of the game.but zilch.....so now im banging my head thinking  i really effed up my metabolism......but i still like the excercising....so im not giving it up.i was just hoping for some help and feedback  thanks D

this talk really has me dizzy.....i have been in the same boat.no weight loss or inches in months and i have really faithfully followed a good eating regimen of 5 small meals every 3 hours and strength and aerobic training 6 days per week....i am baffled to think that the reason i havent lost any weight is because im not eating enough!!  that sounds so absurd, but i am beginning to wonder if it is true because of my situation.....but the fact is.i am not giving up......i lost 100 lbs since aug o6 but nothing in many months...but i guess thats the way it is.i come on this site to get new ideas and i try them out.in the past i know why "dieting" never worked.because i got pissed off and then gave up..but not this time.cause its not a diet im on.....hahahhahaha.it's a lifestyle change......sounds so corny, huh.but its true....good luck to all who show up every day!  D

Fitness does the body still go into "starvation mode" when your still 40 lbs. overweight?? Jan 30 2008

thanks for your reply..i will take this into consideration and try and switch things around on friday.  as an example i finished my weight traing today  it was 3 hours from start to finish which of course includes rest time.but i do not rest  more than 90 seconds between sets..sometimes 30-45 seconds..that is another thing i read so i dont know if that is beneficial or not...anyway i do approximately20-24 different routines.  3 sets  each.  maybe i am duplicating the same part of tyhe body..i got the web-site from here: ExRx.   and i do the dumbell and cable excercises for each muscle group...but i will change it around because i am very frustrated after busting my ass and not seeing any weight loss and staring at this flab...can this be excess skin.......i mean i was over 310 lbs on a 5'8" frame and i know i have to lose a bunch more although i was 175 for about 3 hours when i was 20 years old.lol.........i'm 56...the chart says i should be 148-155 and quite frankly i'd look like i was from biafra...but i'm shooting for it...wow.i talked too much.......as for "a link for my program"  i dont know what you meant.....i made up my program from the ExRx site ...thanks  D

i have been consuming approx. 2000-2200 calories a day.  i do a full body weight training routine every other day and since im retired i have the pleasure of having the time to do it.  it runs 2 hours.  i had previously taken a whey protein drink right after the workouts but i thought that was the cause or lack thereof of weightloss.  ive started (Yesterday) to eat my oat/barley breakfast before my excercising and then on completion i make a vegetable drink. i then will have a can of tuna.   i have been eating every 3-3 1/2 hours.  the cardio will run a minimum of 30 minutes to 75 minutes.  30 minutes on the day i do the weights and 60-75 minutes on the other days.  i have all my fat around my gut...and i do 6 sets of 70 crunches...but i know that the fat has to be lost before any muscle will be seen, ...but my point is.shouldnt i be losing this damn fat with all the excercise im doing...

i just looked at the videos of this pendlay row.....why do they let the weights hit the ground and rest for the second or so?  and why only 4-6 reps?

thanks for the responses...i have been winging  it with what ive been suggested to do.  i go every other day working my chest shoulders back and arms and the rest day i just ride the bike and the elliptical.  i have set up a cable system in the basement for some excercises and also use the dumbells  and an "olympic" bar.  i do 3 sets of 12-15 and push the limit on the third set sometime making only 8-10 reps.  im an old guy (56) who is trying to change some past  bad lifestyle stuff and this site has been pretty helpful.  ive lost 100 lbs but still need to go another 40 or so...i never thought i'd be doing weights, but then again i never thought i would be running either......lol........
