I hear your concerns because when I was in your position I was panicking too. I know it has been said before, but every ones body reacts differently to medications, so you'll just have to take it and see. Also keep in mind too that the people who want to take the time to complain about how horrible their experience was were probably just extreme cases. I mean think about it, when have you ever took the time to go on the Internet just to say something was okay? Anyway, on to my Lexapro experience. I only took it for about 3 months due to the high cost and my lack of insurance. When I first started taking in I actually noticed a decreased appetite, but it did come back to normal after a week. I also felt very, very tired for the first month, but then that also leveled out and I began to feel awake again. There weirdest thing though was for the first couple weeks I kept having the most bizarre, vivid dreams ever. I was told that side effect happens to some people; it was freaky but pretty cool. As for weight, well I didn't gain any, but its hard to say considering I was actively bulimic at the time. When I'm actively using behaviors my weight fluctuates a lot and tends to more upward. It didn't help my ED or really anything for that matter. The stability in mood that I experienced was not enough to keep me paying for the meds so I stopped. I tapered off slowing so I didn't feel side effects. All in all it was an okay experience and I would probably still be on Lexapro if I had the money. So try it and push aside all of those people who have had praticularly bad experiences because they are not you. |

| Weight Loss | Depo Provera shots causing extreme weight gain? | Oct 31 2009 23:10 (UTC) |

I did Depo for about 9 months. I must have gotten lucky and didn't gain weight (however I was 17-18 at the time). I remember the gyno weighing me and saying in shock, "Wow, you're the only person I've seen that didn't gain weight on Depo!" Regardless of the weight, I hated Depo because I had so much break through bleeding. This caused me to quit, but it took over a year for my periods to return to normal. So yea, I wouldn't recommend it. |

I like pumpkin in my oatmeal. I partially cook the 1/2 cup of oatmeal. Then I add 1/4 cup of pumpkin along with some splenda, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger. I then pop it back into the microwave. It tastes like dessert, yet it is crazy filling and guilt free! |

Definitely get them out! Back when mine first started coming in I was too scared to get them removed. Since I had the space in my mouth for them I just toughed out the pain figuring it was no big deal. Turns out my bottom two are partially impacted. They can't fully grow in so I have a constant wound in my mouth that gets chronically infected. I'm actually toughing out an infection as we speak. I've been in so much pain that I can hardly move, I went to the doctors in tears yesterday for anti-biotics, so hopefully I start feeling better soon. I don't have insurance anymore, so I can't afford to get them removed, but as soon as I get the money these things are coming out! I week of pain can't even compare to the pain and annoyance of chronic infections. |

| Weight Loss | Does cheat days actually work (in weightloss)? | Oct 18 2009 14:48 (UTC) |
11 |
I like the idea of "cheat days" for the reasons said above and and usually just indulge, within some sort of reason, one a week. Its nice when you feel comfortableto apply this belief to holidays and restaurant meals. I was never a believer that eating too little would cause plateaus and always thought the less I ate the more I would lose (hence developing an eating disorder), but in my recovery I have been experimenting with eating my recommended intake and having cheat days. By following this philosophy I finally broke a month long plateau and have dramatically reduced my binging episodes. So yea, I'm all about "cheat days," they work. |

Yes, bulimia does cause weight gain. I gained about 25 pounds from binging and tend to drop weight when I don't do it. I've also develpoed acne since the onset of my ED. Bulimia sucks...hope you're doing well and good luck. |

OH. MY. GOD. 6 Feet Under is my all-time favorite show! Last summer I locked myself in my room and watched every episode back to back in a matter of 2 weeks! *Okay, I'm slightly embarrassed*. Though I do agree that the first 2 seasons were way better than the rest. Dexter is also REALLY good, its a close second! |

| Health & Support | Is there anyone out there who was bulimic yet massively overweight? | Jul 01 2009 14:04 (UTC) |

I hate the misconception that you have to be thin to have an ED. I've always been one of those annoying, naturally thin people my entire life until I got hit with bulimia. I was then when I never ate real meals and puked up everything that I gained 25 pounds. I seriously feel like people think I'm lying when I say I have an ED because I'm so heavy. I'm also trying to recover and can usually go about 2 weeks binge free and lose a few pounds, but then I hit a snag for a few days and gain the weight back. It's good to hear you're doing well; its good motivation! |

| Weight Loss | Weigh Loss & Depo Shot....Need Advice!!! | May 20 2009 15:42 (UTC) |

I used to be on Depo. I was on it for a year and decided to quit because of the lack of sex drive and the persistent spotting. Surprisingly I didn't gain weight (my gyno was actually shocked and said that I was the first person she saw who didn't gain on Depo). Anyway, I quit taking it and it took a year and a half for my period to return to normal (not sure about the sex drive), so beware, it can take a long time to get it out of your system. |

I am also in this bulimic hell. I've been doing this for a little over a year now and it has consumed my life. I have been diagnosed and see a therapist. I was on meds, stopped, but intend to go back on them. Bulimia has also caused me to gain 25 pounds over the past year, but I still can't stop. I'd love to have people who can relate. |

After a long hiatus from CC and ED recovery in general I decided to come back and give recovery another try. This topic touched me because I also have a lot of mental issues the inhibit me from making rational choices as well. I have been diagnosed with bulimia, severe general anxiety disorder, and bi-polar disorder. I do see a theapist, but quit my meds (though I'm reconsidering). Due to money issues I don't get all the help I need, but I still try to get what I can afford. Everything you guys say makes me feel like you're reading my mind. We are not alone, we can do this. |

I've never tried the ranch, but I have tried the blue cheese. It was ok...not anything like the real stuff, but it got the job done although I found that I had a drown my salad in it to get any taste. As far as ranch goes I usually just go for the fat free kind, which has about 25 cals/serving; once again, not like the real stuff but gets the job done. |

Don't feel bad, I'm a fan of American Eagle too. Back when I was skinnier their Artist fit, size 2 looked awesome and gave me a butt; there're now the "goal jeans." Nowadays Express, Stella fit, size 4 fit wonderfully, and the regular length actually isn't too long for my 5'3.5 self! |

I work at Denny's so I see some pretty gross, unhealthy things... The two weirdest combination of food the stick out in my mind have to be a woman poured honey into her scrambled, cheesy eggs. And one time a man asked me to melt American cheese on top of his apple crisp. Also I've noticed how appealing "brown" food is to so many people. For example people will order a fried chicken strip dinner with a side of fries, onion rings, and garlic bread. Everything on the plate is a brown color. When I look at the plates I just think, "ew, so much brown," but every time I bring out the plate the customers say how good it looks. I guess I'm just used to colorful plates of veggies! Some of the breakfasts are just rediculous as well. The Lumberjack Slam: 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage, a slice of ham, hash browns, 2 pancakes, and two slices of buttered toast! Seriously people?!?! I sell SO many of those. On another note, my ex and his friends used to have McDonalds double cheese burger eating contests, him and his friends would down 6-8 of the burgers in about 2 minutes. Needless to say they usually ended up puking in the parking lot. My ex also used to order a quadruple at Wendy's. They had to used 2 wrappers and when he bit into it, grease just flowed out! |

Although I haven't had much success at avoiding binges, I have found the drinking A LOT of diet pop or fizzy water helps because it gives me that unbearably full feeling.

I usually sip on some diet Coke instead. (I do this when we are slow then once we get hit with people I'm running around like a crazy person while on the verge of peeing my pants!! haha--maybe not the smartest idea) But I know what you mean, its hard to be around bad food without eating it. |

| Health & Support | Do any other bingers have this problem? | Jun 09 2008 13:31 (UTC) |

I do the same thing. I also think, for me anyway, that the whole "eat enough so you won't binge" isn't the case what-so-ever. My binges do not correlate to how much or how little I eat in the day; they are totally physiological and have nothing to do with hunger. This makes it so hard and frustrating because no matter what I do or how much I eat, that alter-ego in the back of my head always just pops up and forces me to eat. |

I've never had the steel cut oats because they just seem to time consuming, so if you fee the same way get the old-fashioned oats as opposed to the instant. I cook mine the same exact way as I cook the instant and they taste a million times better :-) |
