http://www.djsteveboy.com/intervals.html I use this intervals workout program on my iPod. I'm only on week 2 but the music is pretty good to keep me focused on maintaining a consistent pace and it plays an "up" tone what you are to start running and a "down" tone when you go back to walking. Simple and effective. I'm enjoying it. There are also additional programs for moving from 5K to 8K and one after that for moving to 10K workouts. |

I had Plantar fasciitis last year in one foot. It felt like a knife sticking up into my heel. To help it heal, I did the achilles stretch 5-6 times a day for about 6-8 weeks and did my best to NEVER go without shoes with a good padding in them. I don't wear flip-flops so it was easy for me to wear decent shoes most of the time. I got some Dr. Scholl's heel inserts designed for plantar fascitis, which helped quite a bit. I also took advil regularly and stretched my achilles tedon in bed before walking on it in the morning. If that is what you have, there is lots of good info out there to help you through it. Good luck. |

I am using an iPod couck to 5k "intervals" program that I really like. It is at this link: http://www.djsteveboy.com/intervals.html I am on week 2, run 3, so I'll be moving to week 3 next week. Yikes! The link also includes training for longer running programs after the 5k, so there is a lot to use if you want to pursue even bigger goals. I like this program because it has good music that distracts me and keeps me motivated. I don't really think about it, I just wait for the next tone that tells me to run or go back to walking. I am on my second round of week 2 because I had to take a 10 day break and start again after overdoing it on mediocre shoes. I took time off and got new running shoes so I'm back on the trail. I can't believe I'm running at all, but I am! |

I'm doing a couch to 5K program with this "intervals" program:
http://www.djsteveboy.com/intervals.html For people who are already runners, it can be used to increase intensity during the "up" times (when you hear the tone) and go back to your regular intensity during the "down" times. I run on the "up" segments and walk on the "down" segments but it is designed for anyone who wants to increase their level of training/intensity, according to the intro. |

Wow, I am on week two of the couch to 5K and just happened upon this thread. I quit smoking a month ago and starting the program 2-1/2 weeks after that. I am on day two of week two tonight. Everything is sore and I'm tired all the time but I think that is normal as my body is still adjusting to quitting smoking as well. I felt really good after the first week and two days of rest. I started week 2 on Sunday and now I'm sore and tired again after starting the next level. I hate exercise but I'm terrified of gaining weight so I figured I can start running and combine healing my lungs with maintaining and/or losing weight. I took a day off between three runs and took a second day off the first week so I ran 3 days in 7, and started week 2 as a new 7 day week. I plan to do the same thing this week and run the program for the full 9 calendar weeks running 3 days on 4 days off. |

| Fitness | making running easier on the knees. | Jul 14 2009 18:54 (UTC) |

I just started a "couch to 5K" running plan and my knees hurt too, although probably mostly from getting some use after all this time. All the things I've read talk about trying to avoid running on concrete as a major injury saver (especially shin splints). I run on asphalt and dirt. Also, they all say to run every other day and do upper body or other training on alternate days to keep injuries down. Maybe you could try alernating days of running and eliptical until your knees feel better. |

Sounds like you are going through a really tough time. So sorry to hear of all your troubles. Clearly you are experiencing some despair. When I feel that way it helps to think of my grandmother always saying "this too shall pass." She was an eternal optimist. For binging purposes, I find giant bowls of popcorn (with butter!) or watermelon give me that satisfied feeling of being able to eat as much as I want without too much self-sabotage on the calorie front. Walks are good too, but not the same when I'm thinking FOOD! Talking to a friend or my sister helps a lot. I'm one for reaching out for help when I need it and find it really does help and others really do want to know the truth about how people they love are feeling. There's too much hiding of negatives in our lives when we all feel the same way sometimes. Have you looked for a low cost clinic in your area like ones they are opening in Wal-Marts that I read about? Also, call the company that manufactures your prescription. The pharm companies have programs for people that can't afford needed medications as part of their corporation outreach. Try all available avenues or call your doctor and ask for samples and tell them your financial situation. You never know until you ask. Best wishes to you. |

I've had a lot of luck with Cooking Light magazine recipes. They really lighten up the calories and fat without losing the flavor. I made a mexican chicken casserole recipe from their site last week that was awesome and very rich. It used low-fat cheese, a bit of low-fat cream cheese and condensed skim milk for the "sauce". Honestly, we loved it. They also have a feature in the print copy, which I got for about a year, where people can write in their recipes and the magazine reworks them into light recipes. Some of them are amazing how many calories the original v. the revised is able to reduce. I'm sure they have a good mac and cheese recipe on their site and their recipes have reviews, so I always stay with four or five stars and read comments for tips on improving flavor or tweaking if necessary. Plus they provide serving size and nutrional information for all their recipes. It's been a real godsend for logging here. One of my favorite indulgences is their baked garlic fries recipe. They are simply awesome. |

I like a baked potato and caesar side salad from Wendy's in a pinch. The sour cream with the potato is lowfat and I only use about 1/3 of the dressing they provide for the salad. Wendy's used to have an awesome spinach chicken salad with a really good low fat dressing. I'm hoping that will come back. I liked their pitas too, but they also went away. |

| Weight Loss | Anyone tried Alli? | May 07 2009 19:58 (UTC) |
|
Too bad everyone is so fascinated by the side effects. Alli can actually be very helpful for people like me. I took it last year and lost 2 lbs. a week with no side effects for the duration that I was on it because I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS. Prior to that I was averaging about 1 to 1-1/2 lb. a week, so it was spot on for what it promised in my case. Anyone having side effects from Alli is not following the instructions, but everyone seems to love to talk up the possibilities out of some gross fascination, I suppose. Sad. Alli can be a helpful supplement to the "eat less-move more" weight loss plan, which is obviously the only one that works. Anyone taking Alli and having those horrid side effects described in the pamphlet is not serious about weight loss - they are looking for a quick fix and not an assist to a change in eating behavior and a more healthy relationship to food. |

| Calorie Count | Alcohol | May 06 2009 20:51 (UTC) |
|
I noticed that when I add a glass of wine from the search it still lists my alcohol content for the day as 0%. It is polite of the computer not to notice, but I am still drinking it. I was wondering about it. I'm assuming I shoudn't get an A for my nutritional analysis if I'm drinking, more like a frowny face, even if I'm within my calories. I also tried several times to find a calorie count for Black Box Pinot Grigio wine and couldn't. I'm stuck with generic counts for a white 3.5 oz. glass of wine. Who pours a 3.5 oz. glass of wine? Any counts out there for my Black Box in a more realistic 5 oz. pour? Sorry I can't help with your beer question molly2009, but thought I'd tack on to your alcohol thread. Hope that's ok. Thanks! |

I make sugar-free jello with a 1/4 cup of blueberries in each serving and top it with about 2-3 tablespoons of vanilla yogurt with a tsp or so of honey and a drip of vanilla added to it. The creaminess of the yogurt makes it feel more decadent for me than something like a fat free cool whip, plus I get a serving of fruit in, and some calcium and protein. |

| Weight Loss | to those who eat roughly 1600 calories a day... | May 06 2009 18:12 (UTC) |

On weekdays, I'm pretty routine when I'm counting my calories. I have 1 cup of Kashi Cinnamon Harvest cereral (which is like a cinnamon shredded wheat with a hint of sweetness) and 1 cup of organic 1% milk. 290 calories. Sometimes I'll do a honey-wheat (double fiber!) english muffin with honey. I forget what the count is on that but it doesn't hold me as long as the cereal with milk does, so I need a yogurt or something before lunch. In a pinch, I'll grab a 90 calories yogurt for breakfast and much on saltines mid-morning (120 I think) but that also will leave me starving by lunch. |

| Weight Loss | Lost my first 5 pounds!! | May 29 2008 20:36 (UTC) |

Hey, me too! I started at the beginning of May and took off five pounds by last week. I haven't lost another yet since I pretty much ate maintenance over the weekend and that sure felt like a treat! Back on the wagon this week though and I hope to take another 5 off before my beach vacation in 2-1/2 weeks. I usually lose weight on that trip too since I walk a lot and tend to eat healthy at the beach. Weirdness, huh? I went out and freshened up the summer wardrobe over the weekend and it felt really good to be comfortably back in my size. Those five pounds were straining the seams! Five more will have them with a little room to spare. I also got back into my jeans, which I hadn't worn in months. Another 5 pounds and they'll actually be comfy. Congrats to you and me! |

| Weight Loss | Hey Ladies..How much protein do I need? | May 29 2008 16:30 (UTC) |
10 |
Wow, 17 grams sounds really low. Like others here, I would agree you need much more than that in a day. Even one serving of chicken or fish would provide more than you have been getting in a day. Have you thought about beans? They are cheap, versatile and good in just about everthing. Black beans are particularly good for you I've read, and they are good in anything: chili, quesedillas, dips, soups, alone as a side with salsa. I even make black bean burgers, which are awesome! I had a masseuse who was training for a figure competition and she was on a very serious training program. She was told by her trainer to eat 1 gram of protein for every pound she was while she was training. I would say most regular people need what others have recommended, which is like 70 grams or something. Good advice here on dairy, nuts and soy as great sources of protein. |

| Weight Loss | Started Alli today... | May 29 2008 02:42 (UTC) |

I took it for the first three weeks of May and lost 6 pounds. I had NO side effects because I followed the 15g of fat per meal/48g per day, 1600 calories/day guidelines. I think it helped me because it created accountability. I tend to just treat myself if I've been good (with fries or something equally awful) and Alli kept me on track. I went off it for Memorial Day weekend because I had a terrible cold leading into that and was pretty much living on oatmeal and Lipton soup, which made taking Alli useless. I only take it for meals with more than 5 grams of fat, which is pretty much most of them, but I have skipped a dose or two. I indulged at a picnic over the weekend after being off Alli for 72 hours and enjoyed my greasy burger with cheese, mayo-laden salads, and dessert. I am back on Alli now and will finish out my bottle, which was for 30 days worth. I now pretty much know what I need to do. If I can't keep losing without Alli I'll get more once this is done. Sometimes some of us just need a little something extra and with this FDA-approved pill, maybe it will be enough for some to kick it into gear. Don't listen to the naysayers who come around and love to point out the potential nasty side effects. You will not have them if you follow the program. Good luck! |

| Recipes | What's your favorite light cooking magazine or cook book? | May 27 2008 19:54 (UTC) |

I really like Cooking Light magazine and the website. I have had some recipes that I made out of the magazine be a little bland, but none that I thought were really bad. I find I get better luck at the website where I can read the reviews of recipes along with suggestions from others. I've found some great recipes on there. I currently get the magazine but I probably won't renew it since I've noticed they tend to repeat recipes after a year, so one year is probably enough in hard copy. I really like that they include serving size and nutritional info for all of their recipes and they still use all the ingredients that provide flavor like butter and sour cream, but in small quantities. I can't stand most fat-free products, so it is a great resource for me. I especially like their baked goods recipes, which can be fit into a healthy diet since they modify them to cut back on fat and calories. I love Cook's Illustrated, but it is also not good in terms of low cal recipes. Same thing with Taste of Home. |

Yesterday I got the Wendy's (low fat) sour cream and chive baked potato and a caesar side salad. I skipped the croutons and ate half the serving of caesar dressing. It filled me up and wasn't TOO awful on calories or fat. You could do a lot worse, I suppose. I have read that a Wendy's small chili isn't too bad either but have also heard that the later down into the pot you get your serving, the less fat you will get (from off the top), so get it at the tail end of the lunch or dinner rush rather than at the beginning if you can. Not sure how true it is, but it does make some sense. |

I like 1 cup Kashi Organic Cinnamon Harvest cereal with 1 cup of 1% milk for breakfast. 290 calories and it keeps me full to lunch. I sometimes substitute cereal or oatmeal for dinner if I'm "cooking" for one. Probably out of pure laziness but cereal can be cheap calories if you indulge at lunch! |

| Weight Loss | Trip to Disneyland - eep! | May 21 2008 00:10 (UTC) |

I was at Disney World in Dec 06. I didn't really find it that hard to eat well as long as you stay away from the fried foods, which are obviously tempting. They had a few places in the park with totally healthy snacks, where you could buy whole fruit, bags of carrots, nuts, etc. And they had at least a couple of healthy choices at each restaurant. If you eat a healthy breakfast and keep healthy snacks, go ahead and have that chili dog for lunch because you will walk it off for sure! Wear a pedometer and you will be suprised at how many calories you burn cruising around. If you are using Disney tranportation, get off a stop or two before your hotel. Honestly, you may just want to plan on eating your maintenance calories that week and work on trying to stay under that rather than trying to eat your loss calories and feeling like a failure if you go over. Don't spend the whole time stressing over food or it won't really be that fun. Finally, one of the people on our trip had lost about 100 pounds on WW and she didn't complain about the food choices. I know she carried some food with her but mostly she was able to make good choices most of the time. Sitting down to eat at a place with a menu usually gave us a lot more healthy choices than eating on the hoof though, so try to convince your group to go to full menu places for meals. That might help. Good luck! |

I agree with others here. My mom was on weight watchers many years ago and got to her goal and kept it off for a year, so she is a lifetime member. She has gone back to it a few times to take off a few pounds she gained here or there. I remember she used to hear these type of comments from one group of friends in particular. They used to tell her she didn't need to worry, ask why would she skip dessert, why was she always getting the "healthy" thing, and she told me it took everything in her one night not to yell "the reason I am a healthy weight is because I watch what I eat every day!" Her friends were not particularly weight-healthy, but they seemed to be very calorie-conscious regarding her diet. Funny, that... |

Well, hanging out here is a good start, that's for sure. Also, oatmeal, fruit, low fat dairy products, drinking lots of water and the Cooking Light website, for me. I like that they post nutritional information for all their recipes and give you portion sizing. Plus there are reviews for the recipes. I find it a lot easier to plan lunches and dinners with some variety. Today at work we hosted a seminar and lunch was italian or cheesesteak wedgies and buffalo or BBQ wings with ranch or blue cheese dressing. Ugh! I'm SOOO glad I didn't indulge. When I looked up the calories - yikes! Ignorance may be bliss, but it certainly won't lead to weight loss! |

| Recipes | Marinade Question? | May 19 2008 18:17 (UTC) |
|
I was wondering that too. I made a marinade last week for Mother's Day and I was serving 10 people, so I just put in the recipe and counted it as 20 servings, because I figured half of it went down the drain. It's probably more than that actually, but I prefer to overestimate calories in a situation like that. Mine was mostly a citrus marinade, so it's wan't tremendously high in fat or calories, but every little bit does count, right? I'll be interested to see what others recommend. |

| Weight Loss | Frustrated with friends that aren't supportive... | May 18 2008 20:26 (UTC) |

Weight is SUCH a personal issue. You really don't know what is going on in other people's heads, but there is sometimes a jealousy or envy of other people's success in this really difficult endeavor that people subconsciously react in ways that may sabotage another's success. There is a lot of life wrapped up in food and if you are breaking the cycle of weight gain, your friends might feel a little threatened. I agree with the others on going ahead and eating with your friends, but making the best of it calorie-wise, logging what you eat and moving on. You may want to try and make plans with your friend that are more food-optional, like going to the movies, cultural events or other things like that. People really tend to plan too many events around eating, I've noticed! |

| Weight Loss | 5'6 goals? | May 18 2008 20:03 (UTC) |

I'm 5'6" and I am currently at 156-157 (my scale is a cheapo model; need to upgrade!), down from a 160-161 starting weight. Hitting 160 was really when the shame kicked in that I allowed myself to put on 20 pounds in about 4 years, but when it goes on slowly it doesn't seem like that one extra pound is that much. Add it over the years and here I am! I would like to get back down to 140. I was 120-130 in my 20s but that seems a rather unrealistic goal at this point. 135-145 is really probably the ideal range for me since I am a medium frame. |

A group from my church went on a mission trip to build a house in Mexico. They were doing pretty hard labor and they had a hyrdation monitor on the team whose sole job was to make sure people stayed hydrated. They had a solution they would make everyone drink a couple of times a day. I know it had unsweetened orange juice concentrate, salt and water. I'm not sure what else, if anything, was in it or what the proportions are. You might want to see if you can find any recipes for something like that that on the web. A dose or two a day of something like that might help. When asked what it tasted like, most people said it was OK to not great, but they were glad they drank it. I found this, but I'm not sure if that's what they used: Good luck. |
