Catcher in the Rye stunk. And the biggest literary disappointment ever for me, On the Road. I'd have locked myself in my mother's house too if I were Kerouac, turning out that pile of rubbish- ah, I mean that great modern classic. |

I have to have some sort of chocolate every day or I just sit around and think about it all night anyway. I just work them into my calories. My faves are the sugar free fudgesicles, slow churn dreyer's ice cream (1/2 c. is 120 calories), or there are these Ghiridelli chocolate squares that are prepackaged and about 50 calories each. I want to marry chocolate.

i absolutely believe in this. when i was actively trying to lose, i would always plateau if i had a deficit of more than 500-600 calories for a few days in a row. and whenever I had a maintainance day (usally on friday night), I nearly always woke up a pound lighter. ideally, i found that my smoothest progress was when i kept around 300-400 deficit daily. it makes sense. You want to be nice to your body, not try to beat it into submission. |

thanks for the replies. I'm shooting for less than a 9 min/mile average in May for the Bolder Boulder (10K). Don't know if I'll be able to keep up that pace for that long, though (maybe a lot of it will be downhill LOL!)
bbfxvtub, it didn't occur to me to do shorter runs to increase my speed. Maybe I'll try that. |

You know, one of the most counterintuitive things I've learned this past year is this: usually when I go over my calorie goal I wind up LOSING weight the next day, I guess because you give your metabolism a jump start. So don't worry about it. BTW, I always wind up eating a ton the day or two before TTOTM as well. Its the only time that I can't seem to keep my eating under control. As if cramps, bloating, and being an emotional basket case weren't enough, eh? :) |

lara bars rock. i love that there's nothing unhealthy on the ingredient list AT ALL. Cherry Pie is the yummiest, though banana bread comes in a close second. |

i have around 300 calories for breakfast, then instead of a 'lunch' i have a midmorning snack and a midafternoon snack of around 300 each. by dinner, i'll have had around 900 calories which is half of my intake. dinner is around 600, which leaves me another 300 for an after dinner snack (I love my snacks, can you tell?) |

Just a thought, but do you yank your shoes on by the heel when you're putting them on? I noticed big holes in the inner backs of my running shoes, and realized that the hole is where I put my thumb when I pull my shoes on . I got a new pair of shoes and started being more gentle with them, and haven't had the problem come back. |

I've learned when eating out that dairy is not my friend. Cheese adds another 100+ calories to virtually any sandwich/salad. Ditto for mayo. Cut those two out of any fast food burger and you've knocked 200 calories off your meal.
Other than that, fried foods are worse for you than grilled, salads with light dressing will probably be better for you than fries (I say probably because there are always exceptions). I love grocery store sushi when I'm on the run, or Subway, or a naked vegetarian Chipotle (still kinda high in calories but filling and okay if I can plan for a smaller meal at dinner). those are my rules of thumb anyway. Maybe it will help. :o)

BTW, I have a 7-year old, and she and I both love steel cut oatmeal for breakfast. 1 cup in a slow cooker with 4 cups of water overnight and you have a breakfast thats high fiber and filling. throw some berries on top or add a boiled egg on the side, and you've got a perfect meal (and one that's kid friendly!) |

I'd add another 200 or so for breakfast, including some protein and fiber. Just a bowl of fruit to start off the day will probably leave you feeling hungry a few hours later. I've found that when I skimp on breakfast, I just wind upwith the munchies anyway and devour everything in the house :) |

| Fitness | Bike to work anyone? | Jan 19 2009 22:35 (UTC) |

I bike every day, 4 miles each way, even when it snows (although I drive if the temps are below 20 degrees). I always wear gym clothes, mostly because I don't want to sweat through my work stuff and stink it all up :) I use a backback. The panniers are kinda cool, but they're too expensive for me |

i also went a little overboard the last few weeks and went from 135 to 143. mentally i know most of its water weight and will probably be gone in a week, but i just hit my goal weight the day before christmas, so its a little disheartening to see the scale go back up :( ah well, water weight or not, its back to every day workouts and no ice cream (or beer) for awhile.

| Health & Support | Does anyone know about accupressure? | Oct 17 2008 19:40 (UTC) |
|
Hi ClaireElaine I'm an acupuncturist and I can tell you for a fact that acupuncture can work wonders. if you're going to make an appointment, get a NCCAOM certified acupuncturist, since they know all the theory behind their diagnosis. A lot of MDs and chiropractors are certified in acupuncture as well, but they usually take weekend seminars, so they really only know a few points, and not much about the nuances of the medicine.

I hate free food at work. No one ever brings veggies and dip to share. No, its always fresh baked banana bread and pastries the size of my head! When I see that stuff, I always try and tell myself that I'm not poor. I can afford the treats in the break room on my own so who cares if they're free. I just don't WANT them, which is why I don't BUY them. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't :) |

I've lost 45 lbs and gone from a size 16 to a size 6 since I started Jan 1. I started out just counting calories, then started biking to work, then I joined a gym. I think the best thing about CC is that you learn really quickly how to balance your nutrition. It's become not just a 'diet' per se, but a way of life that has really become habit. I used to go out to eat and order the fattiest thing on the menu. Now its just second nature to look for the healthiest option. Use the tools on the website to find out what your calorie intake is and log everything and eventually the pounds will start to drop off.

| Vegetarian | Buying Special Vegetarian Foods is Expensive :( | Aug 30 2008 16:49 (UTC) |

I've found a lot of the lunch meat to be pretty reasonable. I can get a pack of Smart Life Balogna for $2.29 and my daughter loves it. They also have veggie salami, turkey, pastrami, and who knows what else. That's actually cheaper than when I used to buy lunchmeat turkey and ham from the deli (I think I usually paid about $4 for 3/4 lb of it, but its been a few years). For cheaper hamburger type crumbles you can use TVP. It's about $1.50/lb and lasts forever. And when Boca and Morningstar are on sale, I can usually get a box for about $3.00. 3 bucks for 4 burgers is a pretty good deal, I think. A lb of lean hamburger runs about $5.00/lb now, doesn't it?

| Maintaining | Too much attention at new weight | Aug 27 2008 01:32 (UTC) |
12 |
I'm sure that some of this is the new figure, but it's possible a lot of the negative attention (ie, women getting snippy with you, etc) may be because your attitude is defensive. If you walk out the door expecting people to be rude, you'll usually find some who are, or misconstrue what others are doing as a personal attack. My advice is to be oblivious and live your life. Who cares what others think, anyway? anyway, just my opinion. :)
