Foods How do you calculate calories when it's a home cooked meal? Apr 30 2009
02:30 (UTC)
Original Post by tessa178:

You can use the New Recipe tab in Foods - add the recipe yourself number of servings and ingredients (using their instructions) and it will give you the information you want.  Then tag it so you can use it again in the future.

I second tessa's post.  I use the "New Recipe" tool all the time for my home cooked meals :)

If it won't find a match for an ingredient you put in there, find it yourself in the food database, and look at the number at the end of the URL for the food you need.

Then put that number in square brackets behind that ingredient in your listing.

Like this:

2 tbsp butter [1145]

You can also put in how many servings your dish will serve and tweak that to your needs.  It will also tell you how many grams and calories in that serving, so you can weigh it out if need be, or just guestimate.

HTH!

Depends what's on it I guess.

Air popped popcorn with nothing added?  Fantastic crunchy snack!

Popcorn in a micro bag with all those chemicals and junk?  Gross.  And I'm pretty sure not 150 cals a bag!  Probably double that at least.

Have not tried cinnamon on it yet.. will have to try that sometime!

So gimme the chemicals and gross junk.  I like Orville Reddenbachers 100 calorie microwave kettle corn.

Here ya go:

If you do a little research you can find more info.

But, congrats, it appears ConAgra (who makes OR popcorn) has decided to remove the Diacetyl from their popcorn.  I don't know about the chemicals in the bag itself though.

Weight Loss MASSIVE PLATEAU! Help, please? Apr 28 2009

twilitwing, I'm the same height as you, but quite a bit older.  Personally at your age I think you should be eating more calories, so I'm glad you're upping them to 1,500 on your workout days.  I would think that even on non-workout days you could eat that and it wouldn't hurt you.

Having said that - I've also plateau'd (rather solidly!) at 125 in the past.  What I would suggest (and this is only if you have the willpower to get back on the wagon once it's done!) is to stop counting and exercising for a week.  Give your body a complete break.  Don't go hog wild on calories, but stop counting.

If you can't (or don't want to) do that, then change things up completely for a week.  Get yourself some workout DVDs from the library and try something new.  If you find you're always eating the same thing each day, swap it up completely.

I guess what I'm saying is... shock your body out of the plateau!  :)

As another 5'1"er, I agree with the others.  110 is a great weight for you!

Focus more on toning your body instead of the number on the scale.  Do some strength/weight training for definition and you'll love your body more :)

Weight Loss so frustrated! Apr 03 2009

I had similar stats, at an inch taller.  I'm now 119 lbs. but expecting that to spike before it goes down again.

I keep my cals around 1300.

How about chicken breast, cut into strips.  Stir fry with veggies and eat on a low carb tortilla?  You can add cheese/sour cream and even salsa, just watch the sodium amounts in the salsa.  You can also do this stir fry over rice or barley.  All fairly quick and easy to cook.

Grilled chicken breast with veggies and a baked potato?

If you log your cals, look at your food analysis and see what your sodium intake has been with the boxed dinners.  When I've gone over my sodium by quite a bit I know I'll see a big number on the scale the next day.

Get some Mrs. Dash spices... lovely spices with no salt!

I'm putting my April 1st weight as my start weight.  My weight has been a little weird, at the end of the March challenge I was

March 31 - 121
April 1 - 120
April 2 - 120
April 3 - 119

Hm... weird.  So I'm putting 120 as my start weight, and 117 as my goal.  This month may be a bit harder for me, because we're going to be on the road for about a week and I probably won't have much control over calories OR exercise.  My ultimate goal is 115.

If you're going to eat the skin - weigh it with the skin.  I really don't think it's going to make such a huge difference, you'll drive yourself crazy for a tiny fraction of calories, LOL.

If I'm going to eat an apple, I wash it and weigh it, and log that weight.  I don't first remove the core and then weigh it.

If it was something really calorie dense, it would make more sense to be more vigilant about it.

Foods Friday night pizza substitute? Mar 20 2009
21:51 (UTC)

Just throwing this out there.. I make "pizza" for myself thisaway:

1 low carb tortilla (180 mg sodium per tortilla)
1 serving low fat part skim mozz cheese (170 mg sodium per serving)
cooked, diced chicken
sliced mushrooms and sliced peppers (get all the colors, makes the pizza pretty!)

Top tortilla with cheese, add diced chicken and the veggies, bake 'til hot and bubbly, and voila, you have a wonderful tasty pizza.

Or.. just make your own crust.  That way you can control the amount of salt you add into the dough.  I use "Beth's Pizza Crust" on the recipezaar website, tweaked to my liking.

Weight Loss ive been at a plateau for a while now i starting zig zagging will that help me? Mar 20 2009

I am no expert, but at your age, height and weight, I would say yes, you definitely need to eat that many calories.  Follow the zig zag cals in the fat loss column.

Once you up your calories you *may* see your weight increase slightly at the start.  Don't freak out.  Give it a week or two and then the scale will start moving down again.

If you were hardly active at all during the day, you would need around 3100 cals a day just to maintain your weight.

Reggie, use this calculator:

http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calc ulator.htm

Once you have put in your info and hit the "calculate" button, look at the bottom of the box for the "7 day calorie cycle" link.  Hit that and it will automagically zig zag your calories over a 7 day period for you.

HTH.

PS.  I would STRONGLY suggest no one follow the "extreme fat loss" calorie guidelines.  That would just be bizarre and detrimental to your weight loss plans.
