1200 calories is not nearly enough for a 16yo... you had a meltdown because you were HUNGRY!

The Lounge Boyfriend cheating, I'm pregnant, cannot confront him Oct 17 2009

Sweety, you don't want to confront him about this but you HAVE to. He knows how you feel about fidelity, and he's ignoring it. I know it's tough being apart, but that is no excuse for his cheating on you! He probably thinks that by sleeping with somebody who's already married he can have his cake and eat it too... but it's a very immature (and selfish) behaviour. Do you really want your child's father to be somebody like that?

I know how hard a long-distance relationship is - my husband and I spent four years at opposite ends of the planet before we were finally able to be married... but there would have been absolutely no question of either of us cheating on the other! If he had, that would have been the end of our engagement right then.

I just caught up on the last couple of episodes so I'm up to date now. At first I felt sorry for Tracy for having the bad luck to get so ill right at the beginning... but as soon as she actually appeared on the show she showed her true colours. I can't wait to see her gone because she's an evil game-playing b@tch. I don't often say that about people either...

As for her injury, it was serious enough. She might be evil but she wasn't making it up. She's lucky she didn't kill herself by running a mile full-out on the beach in the middle of the day in the heat of summer with no preparation. She literally melted down her muscles, and that can kill you. The show probably was so vague about it because they don't want to scare people off.

The pain and muscular weakness that you feel after strenuous exercise is caused by damage to your muscles... it happens to everyone, but in the extreme it leads to a condition called rhabdomyolysis - your injured muscles release proteins that put a strain on all your other organs and in the extreme it can literally kill you. Dehydration makes it worse, and certain medications and genetic conditions make you more susceptible.

But back to this week... evil manipulative b@tch she may be but she knows how to work the system. I can't WAIT to see her gone, but with her ability to manipulate other people that may wait awhile. I think her team was MAD to keep her because she is sheer poison...

Weight Loss What is your opinion about Artificial sweetners? Oct 16 2009
15:23 (UTC)

Personally I avoid them as much as I can. Splenda is okay in moderation, but anything with aspartame or the older sweeteners are just plain VILE! I'd rather use less real sugar than have something super-sweet that's artificial. All the artificially sweetened yoghurts are inedible.

Weight Loss Is it possible to lose some vanity pounds (in my case)? Oct 16 2009

Fiber has NO EFFECT on your thyroid or your body chemistry. There are certain foods that you need to avoid if you have thyroid issues - the major one is cabbage, especially raw. It contains a chemical that can makes your thyroid work less efficiently.

Seaweed is very good for you because it contains iodine, which is a thyroid-improving chemical. When I was a kid I had to take kelp tablets for that reason...

Look at it this way... if you were in the 20th percentile, that means that 80% of teens are heavier than you... that's still pretty low. For best health you really want to be somewhere in the middle of the pack.

Nah. Not unless you're sleeping on a treadmill or something :P Ordinary daily activities are already counted for you... you only need to add it in if it's something out of the ordinary or extra-energy-intensive, like if you spent half the day digging in the garden or traipsing around the mall.

Foods how do you say no to your own birthday cake? Jun 05 2009
14:43 (UTC)

Why would you WANT to say no to your own birthday cake... just be glad that somebody cares about you enough to get you one! (cakeless for as long as I can remember...) If you want to cut the calories, scrape off the frosting and just eat the cake. Frosting is just icky fat and sugar anyway. And if you don't want to have a lot of calories, just have a small piece... nobody says you have to pig out on it.

Happy birthday!

Weight Loss technically underweight BUT.... Jun 05 2009

The fact that you got your period back when you stopped exercising (for whatever reason) and lost it again once you started suggests that there IS a direct corellation. Your body weight is very low, and you don't have the reserves to burn off... if you want to exercise, you need to eat a lot more. You can feel 'full' on 1000 calories a day if that's what you're used to getting, but that doesn't make it healthy.

Health & Support the ed clinic triggered me to relapse. May 15 2009
04:35 (UTC)

If your parents are triggering you, you need to develop the self-control and self-understanding to not let them get to you emotionally... their problems are THEIRS, not yours, and if they are saying things to you/about you that aren't true, well you know that. And yes, any experience can be a positive one for your healing journey if you make it that. Even having a minor relapse is positive - if you recognise it and understand why it happened and work on doing what you need to do not to let it happen again. That which does not kill us makes us stronger...

Health & Support Daughter's eating habits... what to do? May 15 2009
04:25 (UTC)
13

I'm not going to repeat what's already been said... you're stuck between a rock and a hard place, and parenting a child with multiple mental and emotional health issues is a tough thing to do. But you need to remember this - MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS ARE NOT VOLUNTARY. Your daughter didn't 'choose' to have a brain that's wired differently to 'normal'. She didn't choose to have trouble relating to other people and showing affection in a 'normal' manner. And she didn't 'choose' to develop an eating disorder. She's living in a whirlwind and she is feeling terribly out of control... and from the sounds of it, she's probably been feeling like that for many years. She and you both need professional help to deal with this, and you need professional help to help YOU deal with the emotional strains of raising a child with problems. Of course you're angry and frustrated and feeling helpless at your inability to help her, and her apparant unwillingness to comply... you wouldn't be human if you weren't. You've been dealing with her myriad of problems for seventeen years, and that's a very long time. Has anyone ever sat you down and said 'how can we help YOU?' She's not doing this because she wants to punish you, or because you screwed up as a parent, or because she hates you and her sister, or any other of the thoughts that may have entered your head. She's doing this because her brain and her body have gone haywire, and she needs help.

Foods My shortest relationship ever... (Food warning) May 15 2009

I'm not worried about the sweetener because it's the only thing I eat that's sweetened and I don't use very much of it at a time... the 'artificial' flavour comes through if I have more than 1/4 cup at a time. But the Fiber One caramel squares are NOT artificially sweetened.

The Lounge Biggest Loser Finale May 15 2009
03:34 (UTC)

Three hours for the live finale was ridiculous... even two hours is too drawn out and they added in all sorts of junk to stretch it to three. We watched the first hour, turned over and watched Fringe while our DVR recorded the Biggest Loser, then turned back to our now-recorded program and zapped all the ad-breaks and interminable time-wasting, and we caught up to 'real time' five minutes before the end of the show!

The final three were very close... I thought for sure that Mike or Tara was going to win but when you saw all three together you really couldn't take any bets on it. It looks to me like Helen and Jerry are BOTH thinner than they should be for optimal health. Looking at Jerry all I could think was 'I hope he never gets seriously ill, because he has NO reserves left to lose.' But I always think that when I see a really thin person...

Kristen looked FANTASTIC and so did a few of the the other formerly extremely large competitors. To be honest I don't think they should even let anyone under 250 pounds go on the program, because they end up losing too much weight in the end. The really big people really NEED to lose the weight and the smaller competitors always end up going too far.

I would have liked Mike to win... and Kristen to take the at-home prize. I didn't expect either of the people who actually won (and they both looked scary-thin to me...) But it was a very close-run competition.

One thing that annoys me - when they get to the last competitor in each bracket, they don't tell you the percentage of weight that they lost, just 'not enough'. Then they start jubilating on the winner. It's annoyingly incomplete.

I'm getting such a very late start this month that it's pathetic! But I went for a swim today... put me down for 1000 minutes.

EDIT - actually, I realised that I DID excercise last week because I walked to the market three times... I just never got around to making a new log for the month or recording it because I was too busy. I've fixed it up now and I'm up to a little more respectable 175/1000.

Weight Loss It's so EXPENSIVE to eat healthy. Mac n cheese - $0.99, blueberries - $5.99 May 10 2009

If you possibly can, don't buy your fresh fruits and vegetables at the grocery store... go to the farmer's market or a market stand instead. The produce might not look so shiny-perfect as in the grocery store, but it'll always be cheaper if you buy stuff that's in season. I spent twenty dollars at the local farmer's market this morning and came home with BAGS of fresh produce.

Weight Loss Am i fat??? [picture] :( May 10 2009

You're not fat - you're just naturally curvaceous. Nobody 'fat' has a waist anywhere near as slim as yours... I bet there are a lot of guys out there who would go nuts over somebody with a natural hourglass figure like yours if you give them half a chance. If guys are staying away from you it's not because you're 'fat'... but it might be because you're feeling bad about yourself and sending out 'stay away' vibes. You are beautiful and you need to learn to love yourself just the way you are.

Health & Support lactose intolerance? May 10 2009
02:26 (UTC)

Buy a carton of lactaid milk and try drinking some of that (or using it in your cooking)... if you do NOT experience digestive discomfort from that, and you do from regular milk, there's your answer... your body does 'forget' how to handle lactose if you don't have it for a long time, that's not unusual. Most people who are lactose-intolerant are okay with yogurt though... yogurt and cheese have much less lactose in them than milk.

Fifty dollars a month is peanuts! You have no reason whatsoever to feel guilty about that kind of personal expenditure.

Foods Mmmm.. Custard.... May 10 2009
02:18 (UTC)
1

You know, you can make your own custard from fat-free or 1% milk and then you can have it with impunity if you just put a little sugar in it (or use splenda)... it's just milk with custard powder or cornstarch and vanilla in it. I made two pints of yummy custardy goodness yesterday afternoon and it's 3/4 gone already. Homemade custard tastes better than bought because it's not so sickly sweet...

But any sort of custard mixed into cereal is YUMMY!

Foods A tale of two ice cream flavors May 10 2009
00:52 (UTC)

Icecream is not a health food... but your cousin is right about one thing - if you're going to eat it, the plain flavours (like vanilla) have less calories than the ones with 'stuff' in them. But it's all relative. If your heart's desire is for triple-chocolate-chunk brownie sundae, you're not really going to be satisfied with vanilla instead just because it has 100 calories less in a serve. That's why I like Edy's - they have some really yummy flavours in the 'light' and 'yogurt blend' lines that don't pack a big calorie punch.

I think you're reading things into their smiles that weren't there... when I pass somebody on the street I ALWAYS smile at them but it's not judging them in any way, shape, or form, it's just saying 'hello, nice to see somebody else out here!' Or I'm smiling at their cute dog because animals make me happy... Please don't feel self-conscious or embarassed about exercising.

Weight Loss Is this too much exercise? May 09 2009
16:03 (UTC)
1

It's not good for your body to go from doing no exercise to exercising seven days a week... your body needs at least one day off to recover. I was doing a moderate exercise routine (an hour of walking 5 days a week) and having great success with my weightloss and I decided to push myself further and up the intensity and really push myself every day. I was really proud of myself for a few months... but all I really managed to do was to trash both my knees in three months time so now I have difficulty exercising at all. Slow and steady really DOES win the race - at least it ensures that you'll get to the end under your own power.

BTW, if you can manage to lose 25 pounds through a healthy diet and exercise, you really don't NEED a lapband to continue your success... healthy habits are forever.

Weight Loss SOS! Portion distortion May 09 2009
15:56 (UTC)

Give her a diet scale and a set of measuring cups and tell her to USE THEM... for EVERYTHING! She doesn't need to do it forever, but even one week of weighing and measuring everything that goes into your mouth (and logging it) is a real wakeup call.

But if she really wants to lose the flab it's not going to happen unless she starts to exercise. She doesn't need to follow your 'all day in the gym' approach, but regular exercise is vital to everyone who wants to be healthy.

Your height/weight/activity sound like you are doing perfectly well for yourself without the hassle of counting calories. If you want to find out exactly how much you're eating go right ahead... but you really don't need to do it as a long-term thing at your size.
