Strike:

Thank you for posting the Article, research based lit is the bomb. Well worth the read. If you don't have the time read page 5 at least. I know the research below pertains to me. The Sears diet has helped to calm the carb storm for me.

From the article:

"To be sure, this is the same logic that leads to other unconventional ideas. As it turns out, it’s carbohydrates—particularly easily digestible carbohydrates and sugars—that primarily stimulate insulin secretion. “Carbohydrates is driving insulin is driving fat,” as George Cahill Jr., a retired Harvard professor of medicine and expert on insulin, recently phrased it for me.

So maybe if we eat fewer carbohydrates—in particular the easily digestible simple carbohydrates and sugarswe might lose considerable fat or at least not gain any more,

whether we exercise or not.

This would explain the slew of recent clinical trials demonstrating that dieters who restrict carbohydrates but not calories invariably lose more weight than dieters who restrict calories but not necessarily carbohydrates. Put simply, it’s quite possible that the foods—potatoes, pasta, rice, bread, pastries, sweets, soda, and beer—that our parents always thought were fattening (back when the medical specialists treating obesity believed that exercise made us hungry) really are fattening. And so if we avoid these foods specifically, we may find our weights more in line with our desires."

And I relate to you Strike, I'm moving little things now to my NEW house, and the big stuff on Friday. and you hit the nail on the head General Patton, slow or fast, it is a process for sure for sure good buddie. The transition continues....

My goal is still the same...to burn at least 20 more pounds of fat. As I'm sure others still have their fat burning goals, fast or slow. My only point you should take away from my comment is the talk lately on my forum has been about running and competition NOT how to burn fat.

Tomorrow is weigh in day, good luck everyone.

This month has been about transition. My new house is 95% completed and I'll get the CO hopefully tomorrow. I'll post pics on flickr for all to see. Friday we move the big stuff. I'm in great shape, I can do this. I've not weighed myself in a week, and it's a relief not to. I feel strong. High energy. Eating sensibly. I ate some HagenDas yesterday, as a reward. I've not injured myself in almost 2 months. My body feels repaired from the last few months of lifting and running.

At least on the last few pages of posts, It seems like this forum has become about running, competing. Weight lose seems secondary,  and I'm really A-OK with that. For most of us, fat burning has been integrated in our fitness programs, before we all had a laser focus on fat burning. We've transitioned.

Abner: Proud that you told the truth. Second, do your best. That's all that I want from me, from anyone. You know what is best for you. I may be in the same boat you're in with the work situation. I'm doing a little at a time. Still watching what I'm eating but doing chair lifts, squats, pushup whenever I can.

In fact, I'm now able to do more pushups than I ever could, a little at a time, when ever you can fit it in...and you know what you'll be more productive b/c of it too...KOKO.

I like all y'all's postings. Very focused, grounded. It does keep me motivated. Trend line is a good way to measure. I'm back in the groove. Doing mostly body weight exercises plus squats with 50 pound hand weights. I'm not that worried about weight lose right now. Fat burning is a gradual thing for me these days.

Keep up the great work. Especially the newbees.

Thanks rk1.

MM: Pants fit are a great indicator for me. Like most men, I seem to pack on belly fat...so pants, belt holes may be the best indicator of progress for us MEN burning fat. My scale works and shows fat % AND I am a believer in watching the the FAT %, but again, it is hard to be accurate. It motivates me. I watch the water % too on my scale. Calipers?...I've never used them....I posted something a few pages back about a machine you get in and it tells you your %'s for a price.

Main point: Weight loss alone is not THE indicator of success in my program. I found that it was important to lift weights to retain muscle. We lose muscle mass when we lose weight, not sure on the science of it all...but again...weight loss could mean alot of things, not just fat loss. Diet has the most impact on my fat burning. Then exercise...lifiting weights, particularly squats,  which I hate with a passion and running which comes naturally and I love. Again, read the past posts MM loads of info from other members, they will give you info and hopefully direction for your program. Good luck.

Choose one. As long as the one you choose is not broken and will give you consistent reliable info each and every weigh in. Compared to my home scale, my doctor's scale makes me heavier, even with clothes. That's another thing, weigh yourself sans clothing. Check the accuracy: take a 25-50 pound free weight and weigh that, that will give a sense of confidence in the machine you choose. There is a calibration lever on the bottom of the scale, move that around if need be for accuracy.

More importantly, it is not about your weight, your weight will fluctuate depending on your water intake, it is about how much FAT you burned. Total weight will give you your weight and not give you what your current water content and fat content is. There are machines that can do this, I highly reccommend using one of these. You can get a good one at K-MART. For the sake of Wednesday weigh in -- Weight is OK, but I like to know if the FAT % is going down. And that is what it is all about -- BURNING FAT!

201 today.

The house is the priority. I've been working more and moving continuously for the past few days. We built the porch yesterday, 10x18 brick curtain with an ogee top with Ipe decking, very sweet. Manual labor is not on the CC list of activities. Should be. Did I grow some muscles on the back of my arms?

Anyway. Testosterone. I've been working with 20 somethings on this house project and comparatively speaking, big diff between what a 55 year old man and a 25 year old think and talk about when and how doing skilled/manual labor...I'll post some pics.

My twin brother called the other night bragging about doing a 7 minute mile average on a 5K over the weekend. That's amazing. for me that is an all out sprint for 3 miles. He's weighs 160. Getting all kinds of trophies in his age class for his running. I know I have the genes for that weight and for the running, he is fanatical. Which I like alot. I can relate to that.

I'm holding my own and I will focus on BURNING fat this week. I watched the Biggest Loser (why not Biggest Fat Burner) show last night and I was so amazed how different the top 5 look after losing 99+ pounds in 130 days. That is so amazing. Finale is next week. Be sure to vote for who you want off the show. Tough decision...losing 13 pounds in one week can't be good for you.

Good luck on the weigh ins gentlemen.

Welcome again to the 4 new men.

What a page of enthusiastic posts...huh. Feels like we need an awards banquet, LOL. Great work Scott. Sararsota, thank you for your recognition, in my humble opinion the missing link in alot of fat burning programs is what the AFC and now the J4C will provide...And Sarasota, you are part of our success, we all are...support in the journey. And yes, we all deserve a big congrats from the stage of life for keeping on keeping on...it takes mental toughness and we all showed we have it in spades.

Phord, I want some of that coffee you're drinking buddie. As for denial...provide them info. Get thier email and send the link to the J4C forum. Yeah, I've had some of the same responses. But we keep trying. As for hotties, well hotties are good, recognition is good. Being healthy is 'mo gooder. Being healthy has lots of benefits. Story: I was painting the stairs the on Sunday along with a very skinny helper. I had to go upstairs but there was scaffaling straddling the stairs. There was about an 18 inch opening that I could squeeze through...and I did without a problem...I could not even of attempted that feat 6 months ago. Let alone keeping up the pace of 14 hour days these past few weeks. So yes, being healthy is very good.

I want to send out a healthy shout out to WW for all his help crunching the numbers. Makes a difference. Thanks WW.

And Phord, you keep it up buddie, I appreciate all your wonkie how-to-healthy body shop talk.

Gentlemen: Start your engines...keep your metabolism high and your spirits higher. I wish you all the very best on this journey.

I spoke too soon. Today I weighed in at 200. WW posted a few ideas. Weight gates. 5 or 10 pound increments. I like this idea alot. My first goal is to get to 195 by May 14th. I started AFAC at 206. But overall I've lost 35 pounds since August. Not counting the pounds when I bounced back and forth over the 200 mark for a month. Why such a magical number? Now that the weather is getting warmer and the days are longer, and the house will be finished, mostly, in a few weeks, during the summer I'm at the club alot with my son swimming, so I'm hopeful. I';m convinced if I move and watch my calorie intake I will be happier and along the journey burn the fat off my body.

6 pounds lost with the AFC.

Strikez: Glad you are part of our group, I really like how you think, collect info for us to make informed decisions about fat burning. Keep up the great work.

Here is a Japanese study that used 60 men:
Allowing time for a rest period during your workout burns more fat than exercising for one continuous session, according to a Japanese study that could change the way we look at exercise.

The unprecedented study compared the workout sessions of seven healthy men with an average age of 25. Their respiratory gas and heart rate were monitored, and blood samples taken, while they performed the following scenarios:

  • A 60-minute workout on a cycling machine, followed by a 60-minute rest period (single)
  • Two 30-minute workouts on a cycling machine with a 20-minute rest in between, and a 60-minute recovery period at the end (repeated)
  • A 60-minute rest period (for control purposes)
It was found that the participants had a greater amount of fat breakdown, or lipolysis, during the repeated session than the single session.

Meanwhile, the repeated trial caused a greater increase in free fatty acids and glycerol, which are released when stored fat is burned, than did the single trial. Also during the repeated session, levels of epinephrine increased and levels of insulin decreased much more than during the single session -- a combination that may have further contributed to fat breakdown.

Current recommendations by The American College of Sports Medicine to exercise for a duration of 45 to 60 minutes may therefore not be the most effective, the researchers say. Splitting up a longer exercise session with a rest period may be more beneficial, helping people to better manage and control their weight.

Welcome lueckl, the J4C starts today, welcome. I just updated the header. 3 months have gone, history has been made, how did you do? Meet your goal? Get close to your goal?

The real question is what will you do next?

I guess that has always been the question. The J4C is the place to BURN fat. I suggest we use this word instead of lose. No one likes to lose anything. It is a negative. BUT, burn on the otherhand is strong. For me at least it is a positive. Feels better in saying it doesn't it? When it is burned it is gone, but you get something else in return for your efforts. We're burning fuel to get things done. On our way to freedom day, 90 days to go. Let's make the best of it. And I like WW's ideas. Stay tuned.

I've been working 12-14 hour days for the past 2 weeks painting my new house and recruiting. One more week of this and I will be totally done with painting. I've been burning calories and eating within the Dr. Sears program and I feel confident that I am off the 200 mark for good. Today I weighed in at 196. Not working out just painting. Moving.

As for interval training, yes, my twin brother swears by it. He got down to 160 from 200 and has been there for a few years. Thank for the articles, keep up the great work. Incidentally he has washboard abs. He teaches GED science classes to early offenders in Dallas. He looks like a kick ass prison guard.

Welcome to the J4C everyone.

I appreciate all your posts. It has made a difference. And wrm, welcome to the group. And WW thanks again for the number crunching and your recaps. I really like your recaps. And it is Spring again. In North Carolina it feels like it has been spring all Winter. Who lives in Ohio? Not me.

I'll keep it up. and I forgot: I am the leader of this group, thanks for reminding me. Thanks Abner. I hear you. I too hae alot to be thankful for. Since August I've lost 35 pounds. But I think I motivated myself to workout. I did some body weight lifting, modified push ups and lifted and moved about 500 bricks today, more physical than I've been for weeks. Tomorrow I will run. I will get up and run. I'll let you know if I don't do it. Thanks. And congrats on your success too.

You've changed to a new ifestyle and now are maintaining it! Way to go! Inspirational.

13 days to the beginning of J4C. I'm coasting till then. I've just admitted it to myself. And I wish I could say, after recallibrated my life goals, other things are more important. But they are not. It is foggy where I keep my goals. I've bounced around the 200 mark for 2 months. Lowest was 196. Today 198. Down 3 pounds from yesterday. It's not fat. Probably water and a good dump. Where can I find the mental toughness to get back on the bench, treadmill? Dr. Phil sternly yelling at me won't work. How do I live up to my promise I made to myself? I'm sure you've been here...how did you bounce out of it? OR are you in the same situation as me? Tell us your story.
