I think that you'll never be trusting of this physician again and therefore need a new doctor. As a health care provider I know that trust is paramount. A few things about your original post. Hypothyroidism rarely results in dramatic weight gain (contrary to what we all want to believe). However you need to have a lipid panel, thyroid panel, insulin and cortisol levels, body composition analysis, chemistry, blood count etc to look for any possible causes such as elevated cortisol (that actually happens just not like in the tv commercials about stress), insulin resistance (early diabetes), Increased fluid volume and malnutrition.
Find someone else and start the relationship with a statement that you are looking for someone to trust that will help you.

I think the best way to acquire your body make up si to go to a physician, nutritionist, or trainer that has a body composition analyzer. My physician has a scale that calculates your fat content and muscle content based on soundwaves passing through your feet and returning to it. She's board certified as a bariatric specialist (that's a fat doc for all you skinny girls). At my last appt I weighed 249. I was very upset. I had lost 18 lbs in the previous month but really felt like I had about 80 to go. She told me that she didn't want me to get to 160 or 140. She said that my body make up doesn't allow for that. She then showed my the composition reports. I have always had 140 pounds of muscle alone when I have been on her scale. Everyone is different. The calculators where you put in measurements are a guideline but not necessarily accurate more of an average. I am hoping to get to 137 before my next appointment on Tuesday wish me luck. That will be an even thirty.

I eat subway when I need something quick and I want to know what the calorie content is. I have a standby sandwich that I know the stats on and when I was telling a nutritionist about it once she termed those types of things as "meal substitutes" I'm not sure I would go as far as that but what she meant is that it is a known entity that you don't have to beat yourself up over. You should as others have pointed out know what you are getting when you go in. I find the roast chicken to be the most satisfying for the calorie content so I get :
A six inch roast chicken with cheese toasted with lettuce, tomato, onion and cucumber. I get the fat free sweet onion dressing as the topping. I ask that they go easy on it. that's the only true unknown is how much the sandwich maker puts on. I like this because it has a lot of flavor and the meat seems substantial. My hubby and I can split a foot long if we choose. and both be satisfied. |

I am 34 years old, 244 lbs, 5 feet 6 inches and i need...... 720 calories according to this same site to maintain MY weight. Obviously they have some sort of glitch going on.

Here's a way I used to get my fix for wings.... take chicken tenderloins about a pound. Put a pan on medium heat and put in about 1 tablespoon of real butter. brown the tenderloins in the butter then coat in your favorite wing sauce I liked quakersteak and lube's louisiana licker. Serve with fat free dressing and carrots/celery. you can also serve with cut up pitas. I got the idea when I lived in Pittsburgh and they served "boneless wings" at quaker steak and lube. much better than deep frying. That little bit of butter gives you the fat you are looking for in the wings with out the skin and deep frying.
I also have a recipe for using the paket of mc cormicks seasonging that's pretty good though I've only used it with shrimp. I take peeled shrimp and toss it in a bag with the mc cormick garlic buffalo wing seasoning and cook on grill or under broiler. I serve those buffalo shrimp on a salad with ranch dressing.
Both of those are my fix for wings. |

I guess I come at this from a different side. I'm a mother with a husband and two young children. I'm strugging to help everyone eat healthier. I have found that I love the recipes from cookinglight.com. You should look for some your family may like and ask your dad to give them a try with you.

I am an oncology nurse practitioner. I have to say that as of yet I've not started targetting artifical sweetners as a primary risk factor. However, we do a lot of things to our bodies that place us at risk and do damage. I don't think this is any different. The only thing as of yet that diet coke is linked to is increased risk for osteoporosis. In my practice I'm not seeing an onslaught of people in increasing numbers with huge tumors. Yes I see huge tumors and not all are explained but not to the level that you would if this were translatable to humans.

ggaron, I have heard both of the following theories: calories in - calories out + energy to store or burn . Second theory - this is the one I was taught in nursing school so I favor it. Your body breaks down different elements differently. It takes the most work to break down proteins, your body uses what it needs then stores continues to store the remainder as fat, however, it takes energy to keeps changing from one to the other for storage. Carbohydrates are similar. Your body uses them for quick energy then they are converted to fat and stored if there are left overs. Fat takes the least energy for storage and your body tends to use it last for energy. So, protein and carbs will get used sooner, and they are harder to store away as fat. Therefore, the theory is if you concentrate on protein and lowsugar carbs, you will use more energy at a cellular level to use your nutrition, and your body will use energy to store it as fat.

I personally don't like to set mine at sedentary and then add my exercise. I've been running regularly for long enough to know I don't skip my workouts! I also already log my miles on active.com, and I'm basically too lazy to keep 2 exercise logs! Right as long as you aren't logging it twice.... no biggie.

Lauren, I see several concerning issues in your post. First of all, your goal weight is extremely low for your current height. You also probably aren't out of your growth spurt yet. Girls don't typically stop growing fully until 17. The loss of your period could be caused by malnutrition or excessive exercise. I wasn't sure from your post if you currently aren't menstruating. However, if you aren't that's an issue as well. I know that being overweight as a child is VERY difficult. I was overweight as a child and teenager myself. I know that once you've lost weight gaining any can be terrifying. However, you need to think of your overall health. Eating one meal of 1200-1400 calories a day is not healthy either. You are better off to eat 5-6 small healthy meal/snacks each day to provide your body an stable energy source. I agree with many of the posters that you are most likely eating too little for your needs. I think that you would really benefit from involving a physician, nurse practitioner and/or nutritionist into your life. There are many programs specially designed for teens concerned with weight and nutrition. These professionals can perform laboratory work, assessments and evaluations of you, your health and your current behaviors and make recommendations that will help you set achievable goals while maintaining healthy habits. I appaud the hard work you've put in so far. Establishing healthy habits in your youth is a wonderful way to maintain a good weight and health in the long term. However, you want to make sure that the habits you establish are healthy and that you aren't causing harm to yourself during a criticial phase of development. I like those ideas too. That's how I look at exercise so why not look at losing in the same light. My current goal is to be able to take my son on a 5 mile bike ride. Right now we are up to about a mile. Just rolling hills, through the local neighborhoods. I hope with in a few weeks we'll be able to make it about 5 miles. Good luck! :)

Synthroid med doses are thyroid function related they are very individualized. Not only can the change in activity and weight effect her remaining thyroid function the food changes can as well. I would check a patient's thyroid function every 3 months during progressive weightloss. I think that others are correct as well that you need to be building lean muscle. You should add some very gentle weight training. You said you are in college two days a week. See if there's a gym there where you can participate in some cardio/weight classes. Those can be fun and combine two things that would help jump start you. I wouldn't worry so much about the difference between 1400-1450 and 1600. They equal 8 flights of steps. I would however, think about things like increasing cardio function, increasing weight training, and varying foods. Also what about your menstrual cycle, is it that time? Iknow that I always fluctuate then lose a bunch right when I start.

the only thing to worry about with chicken lettuce wraps is what type of sauce are they using to make them. You may end up with a lot of sugar and fat there. However all are decent choices. I agree with not getting the salad because you can make that at home any night of the week and probably with better dressings.

When health care providers assess whether you are at a healthy weight and have risk factors we look at several things. One is BMI, another would be total fat %, another would be your lipid profile (cholesterol level), another would be the hip waist ratio, and finally family history. When we talk about hip/waist ratio we are typically thinking of those that are overweight. If you are overweight and you carry your weight in your abdomen it increases the risks for cardiovascular issues. If you have a normal BMI (less than 25) and your hip/waist ratio is off, its probably more about your underlying body structure than about the way you are carrying fat.

You want to avoid processed foods like frozen foods, soups, processed meats like hotdogs, lunchmeats, canned foods, and so on. We add salt to items we intend to preserve to decrease bacterial growth. Also, you want to avoid eating out. This is because restaurants use a lot of processed foods and add a lot of salt. Best thing to do: buy some fresh meats, veggies, and fruit and cook at home as much as possible. Track your intake of sodium. Good luck to you.

I went through this as well. I had been morbidly obese for a major part of my life. I had been walking and doing water aerobics and lost a significant amount of weight. I wanted to start running. Here's what I did. I would go to the track at the gym (I was afraid to run on the treadmill because I still weighed about 300 lbs). I would walk and get my heart rate up. Then I would set a goal. Say 1/2 lap (it was like 15 laps in a mile) and I would jog that, then walk, then jog that again, I tried to make my jogging stints longer and the walking ones shorter. I got to my goal which was to be able to jog the majority of the race for the cure. The music will be a big help. Look for some upbeat, faster songs and try jogging to the beat. Don't push yourself to go too fast, go for distance rather than speed. Good luck! Amy |
