once you have got your bike fitted, ask for the measurements to be written down.  It is handy to keep those numbers.

like what umneydurak said:  Locking your elbows will make most of the shock from going over bumps absorbed into your wrists and elbows... basically keeping the elbows slightly bent with my arms fairly loose feeling, and core tight is how i ride, that way, the shock from any sudden potholes or bumps will be absorbed through the bike... which may be better than your arms ...depending on whether your value your body or bike more... When I hit a pothole that was hiding in the shadows, I really don't like to think about how my bike feels, but it is better than feeling like my arm bones just shattered... yikes!

on the other hand... climbing is when i let my arms work, pushing down with the right foot while pulling with the right arm on the handlebars... opposite on the other side... especially while on a steep long climb... sorry i have started to daydream a bit...  just remember to keep the downstroke fluid

corvusorax:

It seems that the calories burned being off, that kinda messes with the deficit calculation.... time to get a heartrate monitor and rpm and avg. mph computer on my bike!  Thank goodness christmas is coming ....christmas is soon, right?

example being... Right now, i have eaten 1700 calories, but my burn estimate, after the 3hr 20 minute ride today is at 5000.  ?!  meaning i have a deficit of 3300 calories?!

Starsfall:

the bumpy roads are part of the excitement of riding!  My ride to school and back (3 hr. 15 minutes total...) half of it was basically trying to avoid the potholes without swerving... riding in a straight determined path, so the drivers know you are a confident rider...

I can't imagine riding in LA!  Maybe get a bike rack and drive to an 'un-urbanized' safe spot to ride?

amyalisonb:

Spin class is good for really working on your form and pushing yourself real hard, and sweating out a million pounds of water! there is no air to blow in your face :(   But if you have a really nice bike, it's hard to lock it up outside the gym to ride another, not so nice bike.

it takes more energy to move a heavier object up the hill.

haha... true.

I took a spin class at my gym, they have the rpm and distance and such computers on each bike, it is sooo cool, I want one

the calories burned would depend on the weight of the individual, yes?     about 1/3 of my ride is usually uphill.... but definately not at 16 mph (I wish!!! I want to be a better climber, it's not fair!!!-so im trying to loose weight)

 i also use  http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?units=0&mi leage=17.9693&lastLeg=0.0213&legDraw= bike&weight=150&calories=2038.4362983 924348

to calculate my miles gone, and then when i use that to find my calories burned... it is waaay off, according to this calorie calculator (which obviously would be more accurate)

Things tend to taste gross after OJ

that is so funny that you should say that... because a month ago, i was with my grandma and mom on a trip, and they had oj every morning, and i had my oatmeal... after them trying to get me to drink oj with my oatmeal every morning, i had a dream that this crazy maintenance man at a school told me to drink oj with my oatmeal!!! (in my oatmeal i like to put pureed pumpkin), so i yelled back at the man, 'oj and oatmeal tastes too sour together, or too sweet!'  the next morning i told my grandma and mom, and they thought it was hilarious, they didnt pressure me with oj after that!!

dont get me wrong, i love walking... but i guess i got into the mindset that it was all i could do, and so i should get bored of it.... if that makes any sense.

thank you all for reminding me of all of those things i love about walking!  i am re-inspired!

i will try the pool out also.  just two weeks ago was when my 'pool restrictions' lifted!

and franchellb: i am so glad you told me about your success from walking, that motivates me even more.

i was just about to curl back up in bed with a cup of tea, but im going on a walk now.

good morning!

Fitness 'Belly pits' My work out and diet regimen (please advise) Nov 18 2008

try putting some hemp powder in your smoothies or foods.  and flax is also a good way to get protein.  ground flax seeds are real good in yogurt, and hemp powder is strange tasting, but super good with blueberries and bananas and yogurt and strawberries. whole foods sells both.

ground flax has 90 cal. per serving and 2 g. protein (thats an okay amount of protein)

hemp powder has around 120 cal per serving and 13-16 g. protein (try that one)

i am a vegetarian so i have tested different kinds of grains.  so far, my favorite is millet (it is a seed actually) it takes 20 minutes to cook and goes good with any vegetable, or any non-soy veggie burger.  buckwheat is next.

enjoy....  my teacher actually had something to do with spirulina.  This is a direct quote from my yearbook:

"In 1987 Spirulina, or Blue Green Algae, supplied five percent of the worlds protein.  Mr. Donnelley made a trip to South America in search of a source of protein to supply third world countries.  He found Blue Green Algea.  Blue Green Algae is not only a good source of protein but also a potential cure for cancer and gets rid of PMS." (2005)

that would be good for you getting over the moods swings!

the Clif Kids bars are amazing!  they have a good portion of bar.  120-140 calories... fiber protein... and tasty.

i like the chocolate one when i feel like chocolate, i like the honey graham one when i feel like something sweet, and they have chocolate chip...

they are not just a bar for kids.

Foods Ever binge and discover something amazing in the process? Nov 14 2008

i had an epiphany while bingeing on raisin bran.  i typed it when it struck me, to make more sense of it... here is a copy:

Raisin Bran Epiphany

Have you ever poured cereal into a bowl, whether it be raisin bran, lucky charms, honey bunches of oats, or whatever, and gotten a ton of the raisins, marshmallows or honey clusters in your bowl. You think, wow, I really got it good this time.
Then, after you have anticipated how good that bowl of cereal will be, it gets thrown out of your hands by a freak accident. (Like a little brother running through the kitchen). Right when you have the milk poured in, and the spoon has been sifting through the bowl of cereal, marveling. But you have yet to taste the cereal at the bottom of the bowl.

Now it is just a bowl of cereal and milk, splattered across the floor, people stomping all over it, not noticing the mess on the floor. It wasn’t your little brothers fault, it wasn’t even your fault. Just coincidence.

But, to realize that you were gifted that moment of joy, with your bowl full of marshmallows, is just as good as never having it at all. Do not live in the past, do not regret the mistakes you have made. We all live in the present. Some of us have yet to fully understand what living in the present is. And instead of wallowing in the grief which follows the destruction of how good you thought life would be, after living in three minutes of joy, we must work to create joy from our present situation.

oh, i was also going through a life changing journey at the time.

"The caffeine in the coffee does not affect your heart because it is not metabolizing,..."

I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure that this is inaccurate. I've read that wine enemas are dangerous because it's not filtered through the liver but goes directly to the blood stream. I would assume the same would be true for caffeine. I also read that you would have higher levels of caffeine in your bloodstream after a coffee enema than if you drank it. This could be for the same reason as the wine enema??

so basically any drink can be put up your butt to make you poo.

kindof like a douche?

i was on hard core pain killers while in the hospital, and they wanted to give me an enema.  i said nothing is going up my butt.  i feel like the best way is not to force it.  that first poo hurt real bad, but it was worth it to wait instead of getting a butt douche.

sorry if you feel i am being immature, i think it is good to add some humor to this very serious topic.

peace

i heard that keeping a deficit of more than, something like, 500 puts your body in starvation mode.

So if it calculates me burning an average of 2000-2200 per day, I should only have a deficit of no more than 500?  Just seems like working out is pointless then (aside from muscle toning) if i'm going to turn around and eat what I worked off (or more).

I'm so confused, lol.

you are not alone, so am I.

Weight Loss Does cinnamon really help metabolize sugar?!?!? Nov 12 2008
07:01 (UTC)

cinnamon adds flavor to my yogurt, smoothies, oatmeal, and just about anything else that the spice would not clash with.  the best thing about cinnamon is that it does keep my sugar cravings down.

cinnamon in itself is pretty sweet, spicy and all around flavorful.  i find that the extra flavor is the reason for less cravings.

i try not to look into those claims too much.  there was an interesting article in the newspaper today about cravings.  check it out, i found it very useful.

Weight Loss calorie incrase on days i workout??? Nov 06 2008

i heard that keeping a deficit of more than, something like, 500 puts your body in starvation mode.

i had asked the same question... it may be in one of my forum topics.

here is a few exerpts from a response i got from 'nycgirl' ( to not plagiarize)

"To lose 2 lbs a week you need to maintain a calorie deficit of 1000 per day (makes 7000 cals per week which is roughly 2 lbs)."

"If you eat 1200 cals per day you clearly will not be getting the full nutrition you need. If you do this for a day, here and there, it wouldn't harm you, but to maintain that low calorie of a diet long term could have deliterious effects not only on your diet but on your healthy overall."

i did it! i made it in and out with no problems other than loosing weight.  wow, that was so much easier than i had expected.  it has been 6 weeks and 2 days.

i have learned so much from this experience it is unreal.  thanks for all your good words.

being from a small town, it is hard to find people who are going through the same thing, but i found others going through life changing illnesses, and close friends even family members. i love how much strength, getting through this operation, has brought to us.

the greatest thing i have learned is to be patient.  and i guess that applies to loosing weight as well.. patience people, patience

you are one of the minority of sensible people on this calorie counter thing.  your idea is very positive, and as long as 'we' don't use your idea to project our negativity or frustrations, its good for 'us'.  you have the right mindset. definitely

so.. i havent talked to my surgeon, im going to meet him a few days before surgery.  the reason being- i live in california, and i am having surgery in rochester minnesota.  (I wish i could meet him before signing onto have him as my neurosurgeon)

i uderstand a basic IV is putting a saline solution into your blood, but is it the same for one which supplies you your nutrients?

i do need to talk to my doctor about this- im getting really anxious, but my mom wants to wait until we have more questions to call him.

Weight Loss 500 Calories Per Day Jul 31 2008
23:36 (UTC)

i'll try not to be too harsh:

first of all, dont eat 500 calories a day. eat at LEAST 1000 calories. you will gain weight ultimately because your metabolism will slow down, and when you want to eat like a normal person again (after you get to 110...) you will gain back weight... or so the experts say. Basically your body is not getting enough nutrients every day to function properly.

im going to repeat what has been said over and over in many many posts, so here it goes

you must get the proper nutrition in order to loose weight in a healthy way.

you must eat at least 1000 calories per day

You are setting yoself up for failure eating like this

and there are a lot of people on this website who have EDs and talking about how you eat 500 calories per day casually as you do, is triggering and a little dense.

Edited Aug 01 2008 05:31 by coach_k
Reason: CC guidelines are for 1200 per day, please do not advocate eating less than 1200 calories per day. romotion of starvation diets or habits that exhibit signs of an eating disorder ("pro-ana", "pro-mia", etc.) is prohibited.
