Weight Loss Down 85 lbs now the final 15 are not coming off!! Nov 23 2009

Great job on the weightloss!

But now, you definitely need to increase your calories. 1200 calories a day would be the BARE minimum you need just for existing and add in working out.

The chart below would be for a 185 lb woman trying to reach 170lbs. This person is 5'5" and 25 years old. (Since I don't know your age/height, I used this as a guide). As you can see - your calories are HORRIBLY low. This is dangerous and will cause your body to begin to slow the weightloss (thinks it is starving - there aren't enough nutrients to fuel the basic function). You need to eat at least 1500-1600 calories!

Your husband will be more happy that you are HEALTHY which you won't be if you continue to starve your body!

These results will help you to know how many calories you need to maintain your current weight, and the number of calories needed per day to achieve your goal weight in a healthy, steady manner.

You need 2167 calories per day to maintain your current weight without exercise.

You need 2103.1 calories per day to reach your goal weight slowly and maintain that weight without exercise.

If you reduce your current caloric intake to 1667 calories per day you will lose one pound per week without exercise.

If you increase your current caloric intake to 2667 calories per day, you will gain one pound per week.

Exercise and Calorie Needs

If you exercise for 30 minutes each day, you may increase your caloric intake to 2405.3 calories per day and still maintain your current weight.

If you exercise for 60 minutes each day, you may increase your caloric intake to 2703.1 calories per day to maintain your current weight.

If you exercise for 30 minutes each day, you will be able to reach your goal weight with 2333.8 calories per day.

If you exercise for 60 minutes each day, you will be able to reach your goal weight with 2622.1 calories per day.

Foods Fat-Free Milk vs Soy Milk vs Almond Milk Nov 23 2009

I think it would be fine. I know you can't always go the other way (replacing normal milk with soy/almond milk) because they don't react the same way in cooking (and as a side note...I once used soy milk in a noodle recipe instead of real milk and it was horrible).

But for other recipes using almond/soy milk as an ingredient, it is likely that its main purpose is moisture. With that, you're probably fine replacing it with FF milk.

I cook a lot and cater on the side and I wouldn't think twice (meaning: I would do it) about subbing alternative milks with real milk.

Good luck!

Brine it and then use the Reynolds bag. Comes out perfect, juicy, and beautifully browned every time (and takes less time). Never tried a paper bag - I have a habit of catching things on fire so that probably wouldn't be a good idea for me to try. :-)

I mostly eat just whites (but do occassionally through a whole egg in for fun...love egg yolk). I freeze the yolks (put them in a freezer container and then pop the yolk). When they thaw, they are a bit of a wierd texture, but perfect for baking. Or I give them to my uncle when he wants to make Hollandaise sauce.

Weight Loss No time for exercise, does studying burn calories? Oct 26 2009

I'm in law school which has required WAY more work than any of my 2 undergrad programs (I have 2 bachelor's degrees)...and even with an insane workload in law school - I make the time to exercise. (I don't have the time either.) You will feel better, it helps ease stress, and helps brain function. I frequently take a textbook and read it while on the elliptical (although I have to say, trying to highlight while on the machines is not easy). LOL

I also tried going a semester without exercising and gained 10 lbs (stress eating). Exercising helps me get better sleep too.

Not to sound like a commercial or anything but...JUST DO IT.

If you make time to study, you can make time to exercise.

I'm with heatherparks. Chips and salsa. I make homemade fresh salsa, and no matter how hot it is, I can't stop. My new trick is to make cucmber slices with salt and use them in place of the chip. You get the crunch, the salt, and the salsa flavor and it's a pretty good substitute.

Also, any kind of jalapeno kettle chips. I once ate an entire bag of hoppin' jalapeno crunch tators (back when they still made them) and I got the worst earache! lol

And then there are french fries...I skip all fast food places because I can't bring myself not to order the largest fry order possible and then eat the entire thing. I can't even tell you the last time I had a french fry....

I did it at two work places and it worked well each time. And both places, we weighed in together so no one could lie. At one place, there were about 10 of us doing it. Our HR lady had the scale. We'd go in and weigh in and she would keep the weight logs. We all kicked in 20 bucks and the contest went for three months. We started walking together at lunch. At the end, the top 3 people who had lost the most weight split the money $100 for first place, $60 for second place, and $40 for 3rd place. It was fun. I won second place.

The other place I did it was just three of us. Again, we all weighed in together. We pitched in $20 each month on weigh in day. The first month there was a tie for first so instead of getting $30 back and then putting in another $20, we just left the money in. At the end, there was $120 in the pot. I won first place and got $80 and the runner up got $40 (essentially got their money back). I lost about 12 lbs in the 2 months we did it, and was able to keep it off. Plus, it was great accountability at work...instead of snacking on junk food, we were all encouraging each other to stick with it.

You should definitely try it. At least, both of my experiences with it were positive. And the built in support and accountability were great. And winning a few bucks was awesome too. :-)

Good luck!

For a sweet treat, I give it a few sprays of I can't believe it's not butter and then sprinkle it with cinnamon and splenda. Yum.

For a salty treat, I use the spray, and then throw on pico de gallo seasoning (chile and lemon flavor), or grated parmesan. Equally yum.

Enjoy trying all these combinations people have shared!

I LOVE Paula...and her boys! I think she is adorable. I think I've only made one of her recipes (blueberry dumplings), but I can still enjoy her show! It's like Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa), her stuff is often loaded with sugar, butter, and cream, but there are a lot of idea you can get on the food network and then make a healthier version.

Paula went from being an extreme agoraphobic (sp?) to being an incredibly succesful restaurant owner, and TV personality, and she loves herself as she is. I think she should be admired for what she has accomplished. If you don't want to cook with a stick of butter...don't! But stop criticizing someone for doing so! Not everyone in the USA is fat and eating something on occassion that is a bit less then healthy isn't going to kill anyone. And deep fried lasagna really isn't any worse than a burger and fries...or two slices of thick crust pizza...or the millions of other things we ALL have ingested in our lifetimes.

It's so easy to point a finger at others rather than take responsibility for ourselves. In that veign I say, "You go Paula! You make me laugh and you are a true joy to watch."

Hello my lovely ladies -

Looks like almost everyone had a pretty good week.

And finally - here I am on a wednesday for weigh in. :-)

After 3 weeks of no movement...

Last week - 255.8

This week - 252.8

Finally.

Pshew!

Lynners - I think everyone knows this already...but I am in law school (that's my career for now). I've been working with at-risk teens for about 15 years and am going to law school to be a juvenile advocate (don't know where exactly...maybe dependancy, maybe delinquency...we'll have to see where I land).

Follow your dreams. Who ever thought I'd be going back to school...law school at that...at the age of 34. But it's a dream come true and I am soooo glad I did it.

Hey girls-

My weekend hasn't been horribly successful either...but I wasn't logging so I am not sure what my actual counts were. But the worst part is - I didn't get to the gym which is ruining the streak I was on. Grrrr.

Anyway, tomorrow is a new day.

pbear -- can you resend the link to the podcasts for the C25K thing? I got new batteries for the mp3 player so I am ready to download away!

Hope you all have a wildly successful week!

Hi Girls-

I reiterate lynners advice. Any craft/fabric store will have tape measures.

And I'm excited to finally weigh in on a wednesday morning!

So...before Christmas I was about 248.8

After Christmas/new years I've been sitting at 256.4 (GRRRRRRRRR).

This morning -  255.4

A loss of 1.0

I'll take it but I was hoping for more. Although I am retaining water badly for some reason (right now my ankles are a full 1/4 inch bigger around than usual!!!) so I'm hoping that stops and I have a better number next week.

Regardless of what the scale says - I am thrilled that I have done all of my scheduled workouts since I started back to school last week. That is an accomplishment all in itself.

Pbear - thanks for the links for the podcast! I do have an mp3 player (although I am a bit dumb in using it). I'll definitely try that. Yesterday it was kind of dumb trying to remember where I was in my counts and what time I was supposed to stop running or start running again...etc. Oh and congrats on the loss this week!

FOr those of you with a loss this week - congrats! Keep up the great work.

Everyone else - keep your chin up. Remember its a marathon - not a sprint!

Hope you all have a great day!

Hey girls-

Did day 1 of my C25K thing today. Well, sort of. I forgot to look at the chart before I went to the gym so I did what I could remember for a total of 25 minutes....it was intense-but awesome!

My goal is to run 3 miles on my 35th birthday...which is just exactly 10 weeks from today so I have just enough time to get through the program...and a week extra to play with.

It would be awesome to launch my next year with a 3 mile run (longer than I've ever run in my life) to symbolize my new life and committment to health.

I'll keep you all posted. And you veterans of the program-please share any tips/tricks you might have!

Hopefully I will see you all in the morning. Wednesdays are such an early day I often forget to weigh in as I run out the door!

But I'm going to take the advice someone said and change the batteries in my scale....it's been a couple years since I did that.

Oh...if it were only that easy...but I can hope. :-)

I'll let you all know how it went!

Hey girls!

I've been totally frustrated as I've done all my scheduled workouts and been below my calories...and I was up 2 lbs this morning. I know, it's probably water or something, but it's still irritating!

Today I will be over my calories as my team is in the playoffs and I made a feast for game day. Actually, I did it all low calorie (low fat cheese, low fat sour cream, etc) but it still adds up. Plus, since my family is all Pittsburgh natives while I am a San Diego native, this game is the rivalry so whenever a team scores, the person who is cheering for the opposite team has to take a shot. So far I've had to do 2....and I know that alcohol is a lot of empty calories. I'm chalking this up to a cheat day (even though by rule, I don't usually have those).

Anyway, I love the idea of the couch to 5K thing...I may look into that!

Alright lovely ladies, I'll see you all in a day or two. For now, it's back to the game. :-) Hope you all have a fabulously healthy week!

Hey everyone!

I didn't fall off the face of the earth either (though my absence from CC says otherwise).

I will say, that while my weight loss has been pretty much non-existent for the last 4 months, I maintained a steady weight in my first semester of law school and I count that to be a HUGE success...I was terrified that I would gain weight with having time be at such a premium.

However, new semester, new schedule and all that. I have a 4 hour break on Mondays and while I will be meeting with my study group during that time, Ialso think there will be plenty of time for a walk each Monday. Then it is my goal to hit the gym on Tues, Thurs, and Saturday as well as being better with my calories.

I did make it to the gym during my very short semester break, but not nearly as many times as I wanted (and the scale reflected it with a 3.4 lb gain!!!). I also had too many Christmas goodies (let me tell you how good that homemade eggnog was) but went and purged the fridge a couple days ago so that I am not tempted by anything else!

New year - no resolutions but some goals. My immediate goal is to get down to 240 (about 13 lbs) so I can get into the rest of the clothes hanging in my closet. I'm tired of wearing the same 4 pairs of pants over and over. A small loss will get me into some more pants and about 25 lbs will get me into the bulk of my closet.

I was a good girl and prepped my meals and snacks today which is my goal for each day (so that I am not tempted to go and buy something totally unhealthy while at school each day).

So that's my update.

Current weight 254.8

Hopefully it's down an ounce or 2 by weigh in Wednesday.

Welcome to all our new members and Happy new year to everyone!

Wow, that total weight loss as a group is inspiring!

While my weight loss has been about non-existent since school started...I just keep reminding myself that a year ago I was 30+ lbs more than I am now. It helps me feel a bit better.

Now that I amdone house-sitting (I go home tonight) I can be back on track with weigh in's and getting to the gym and stuff. Although I have to say, the trade off of being in this goregeous, clean, peaceful home with an ocean view has been worth the trade off (no weight loss).  :-)

Hi girls! This isn't an "official" weigh in because I did it on Sunday (as I mentioned before, I'm housesitting and there is no scale here...and I'm only back to my house on Sundays so I hopped on the scale).

I think my last weight was 249.2 (September 7).

This week was 248.4. It isn't much...but since I had gone back up to 253.6 in the meantime, I'll take it. The 4 flights of stairs in this house are very helpful. :-)

It seems like now that I am about half way through this semester of school, I am starting to find my rythym and am able to figure out how to fit in a workout-athe absolute crucial necessity of that (not just for weight loss, but for overall mental sanity!), and finding I am able to pack quick and healthy meals.

it's all a journey. I'm not tryng to lose 15 lbs a month (although it would be nice)!. If I can lose 4 or 5 lbs a month while I am in law school-I will count that as  a great success.

So my mini goal is to be 239 (or less) by December 1. I'm looking forward to getting into a bunch of clothes that have been hanging and collecting dust. :-)

Congrats to all who had a loss this week and for those of you who are hovering-keep your chin up. You are all doing great!

Hey all-I know I've been MIA also!!!!

Unfortunately I am housesitting for the next three weeks and there is no scale to be found in the house. And even if there was, it wouldn't measure the same as mine....

On the positive side...the last time I house-sat here I lost 5 lbs because it is a 4 story house and I am running up and down the stairs non-stop. I'd be super stoked if that happened this time too!

Anyways...I hope you all have a great weigh in tomorrow. Halizabeth-your mom and family are in my prayers!

You guys are all doing GREAT!!!!

LINZ - I feel your pain. Don't be too hard on yourself...thre are just those times that life is not friendly to our weight loss efforts!

I can't believe this is my first official weigh-in in weeks!

Anyway, I've got no good news to report. :-( I had to birthday parties this weekend (mexican food on saturday and a nacho bar on sunday....GRRR) and then it is TTOM so there's all that extra bloat and fun stuff.

Anyway, last weigh in I was around 248.2 and this morning I was 250.2 GRRRR I was hoping to never see 250 again. This law school endeavor of mine has been diffuclt to balance with any kind of exercise (other than the mental kind). I keep hoping that at some point, I am going to be able to find a routine....we'll see. :-)

But anyways, congrats to all for your weight loss this week. You all inspire me!

Hey everyone!

I know it's not Wednesday....but as I stated before, now that school has started I can't weigh on on Wednesdays. But I wanted to check in anyway!

So, I haven't had a chance to workout since school started (other than the walking around campus exercise) which has been a bummer. I thought I'd be able to work it into my routine last week....and then I got eaten alive by mosquitos last weekend (I had over 50 bites!). This put me in extreme agony and I could barely make it through classes each day before I had to come home and soak in a cold tub to releive the pain and burning!

Thankfully, it's about done now, so my goal is 3 days next week (T, Th, Sat) to hit the gym.

In the meantime, even though i've been missing my workouts and stuff....I got on  the scale this morning and I was 249.2 !!!!!!!!! (My last weigh in was 250.8). I haven't been below 250 in about 4 years. And...now I want to run and have a doctor's appointment....just so I can be below that 250 lb. chub on their scale!!!! This is one of those milestones I've been aching for! I'm about 10 lbs from fitting into a BUNCH of clothes I havne't workn in forever (which will be super helpful for the more professional image I am trying to portray now that I am in law school).

Anyways....I could hardly believe my eyes this morning...even got on the scale again to make sure it wasn't a mistake!

So I wanted to share...and congratulate everyone else on their lbs and inches lost!!!!

Hope everyone has a great and HEALTHY week!

Hey all!! I missed the last two weigh ins.....but my scale hasn't moved. I knew I would stop losing while I adjusted to my schedule for school....so I'm okay with that. Had TTOM and ate like a monster...but it didn't reflect on the scale (thank goodness).

Now that I have made it through my first week of law school, I feel like I can get back in a routine so I'm hoping that my our next weigh in (not the one in 2 days, but the one after that) I will have kicked the 250's goodbye forever!

And thankfully, labor day wasn't an issue. I had so much homework I stayed home. Ate some leftovers for b-fast and lunch....and we're planning chicken and fruit salad for dinner. Then tomorrow it's back to the school grind.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!!!
