Hey Katy, 10lbs is good - are you able to add weight to it?  Once you get used to it, try adding another 5-10lbs.  I work with a 20lb vest now, but I started with 10lb. (I have a love/hate thing with doing bag work with the vest, soooo hard but sooo good for you)

And yep, I incorporate kettleball training as well.  I have a PT that trains me for my fights 3 days a week so we throw that in there at least once a week to make sure we're always switching things up.

And Eddie, I am familier with Tiexera -good fighters.  Is Shinkyokushin similar to Kyokushin?  I train with a few guys who have a background in that style and their leg kicks are deadly!  and tree punching?  You are crazy!  I'll wuss out here - I'll stick with gloves and hit pads... heehee.

Just wanted to second Eddie on the weightvest, the last month or so before I fight I do all my weight training and stair sprints with a vest on - it's make's everything just a bit harder, good for cardio, good for the core and you see results fast.

If you're not used to wearing one just walking around in one for 1/2 hour will make you feel it.  also, I prefer a vest to the belts myself, they don't shift around as much.  Those things are awesome.

Eddie - good luck in Osaka!  What tournament is it?  I won't be able to get it on TB (no cable) but I'll try and download it!  By the way - do you follow K-1 at all?

Oh and just a suggestion for getting your sprints in if your shins hurt - I can't do running sprints because of my kness and I've found that doing my sprints by running up stairs really gets the sprint part done without as much pounding pressure on my knees (not sure about the sprints on that one but maybe they'll work for you to?)

I've also done sprint HIIT intervals on the spin bikes (you have to use a spin bike for them - a regular stationary bike doesn't change the resistance fast enough).  Just make sure you crank up the resistance for the sprint part - not quite as effective as running sprints but it gets the job done and without the pain.

Hey Katy,

I'm also 5'6", train in Muay Thai and my fighting weight is 124lbs so I know what you're going for.

You definetly need to eat more, My workouts are similar and when I'm in full training mode - I need 2500 to 3000 just to maintain at 128.

to lose a couple pounds I wouldn't go any less than 2000, maybe even 2300 if I were you, when you're body works that hard it needs the calories!  It may take a bit longer but the loss will stick and you'll feel a lot better and be able to work out harder.

Thanks!  I'm not too precise on the carbs % but generally if I avoid breads, pasta's and rice I get about 100 to 150 gr a day so may be 12 to 15%?  pretty low but nothing atkins like.  I get them down to about 50 gr a day or less in the last two weeks before I fight for the last lbs to make weight but I couldnt' do that on a regular basis - I need the carbs for energy.

I eat pretty high fat too - minimum 30% (mostly from PB heehee).  I find it keeps me fuller longer than protein.  that's what works for me.

How long have you been doing Muay thai?  I've been doing it for just under 6 years and I go a minimum of three times a week even when I don't have a fight coming up - just not as intense.  I can't/won't give it up - it's the only thing I've ever enjoyed enough to stick to.

Hey Snoopini!  I found that I just wasn't eating enough as GI Jane (who always seems to know the right answer!) said.  I had to bump it up to 3000 a day to keep it in check and even then I'd still have to watch it - I Loooove to eat so even just regular overeating is a problem for me.

I have found that going low carb really helps - it's a bit hard to get used to at first but it kind of keeps my eating at bay.

As for my fight, I made weight no problem (I'm pretty good with cutting 4 lbs of water weight the night before) and I won!  TKO at 1:07 in the first round with a knee to the body.  It was really great and kinda sucked at the same time cause I worked my ass off for it.  but oh well, I'm the ISKA North American superbantamweight title holder now - bwahaha!

I have to get back into it soon now,  I've been slacking and I have a title defense in July and as usual, have another 5 or 6 lbs to cut.  blech oh well.

I have to join Spirochete & Floggingsully here on this one.  I am also a mesomorph so I gain muscle easily (for a girl) and I also kickbox competitively and train with heavy weights and I am NOT bulky.

I also have a huge appetite and I tend overeat by a large amount on a regular basis (so I'm definitely not in a caloric deficit) and I still don't bulk up.  I am muscular and athletic and strong though.

Maybe you just have the wrong idea of what bulky really is?

Hi Everyone!  I've been so busy that I haven't been able to check and see how you guys were doing and it sounds like everyone's making some real progress!  We may not have stopped our binging but at least we're starting to find out our triggers and such!  Yeah for us!

Alexw and Sharon, I'm definetly still in the for April.  On Day 4 right now and feeling good! Alexw you are doing so well!  congrats and reaching Day 10 and hopefully 11!

Sharon, I think your idea is great and I'll start! That's fantastic news that yesterday was a good day for you!  I always find the first day after the hardest and woohoo to you for making it through!

I'll try and check in on you all more often, have a great friday!

Hi Everyone, I had a busy weekend so I couldn't check in and I've got a nasty cold that I picked up yesterday.  Sharon and Alexw, I messed up I'm afraid, I had minim binge on Friday which I wasn't counting because I was still within maintenance calories and I did well on Saturday and Sunday, was at maintenance both days also.  However, yesterday I blew it.  I started feeling sick in the evening and that brought on the comfort food cravings and before I knew it, I had chalked up 4000 cals for the day.  Not happy about that.  Not super upset either.  With the amount of exercise I do, it'll be a maintenance week so no gain to worry about but it still stinks.  So I've messed up the beginning of April anyway.  I'm still in if I'm allowed, there's still 21 days in April and then my birthday at the beginning of may so I'll make that my goal.  You two are doing really well!  I just have to follow your example.

Sharon and Alex  - you two are doing so well!  keep up the good work.  I'm going to follow your example and try for the month of April also!  As extra motivation, i just found out that for my fight on the 26 I'll have to lose about 5 lbs to make weight.  I've been waiting FOREVER for another fight and I don't want to screw this up! so:

day 1 no binging!

Hi Everyone, been a few days since I could check in but it sounds like everyone is working really hard at this!  Congrats to everyone!

I did really well for Day 8 and I was having a great day 9 yesterday until about 10pm.  then Whammo - mega binge - about 3300 cals ABOVE my regular intake - ouch.  I didn't feel too too bad althought it might hurt me today (a good chunk of the binge was on super high fibre muffins - uggh).  Anyway, trying not to focus on it too much.  Today is a new day.

hiya!

Liora congrats on throwing out that chocolate! That's a huge victory! I have the same chocolate issues and you are a stronger woman than I am to do that. and thanks Alex for all the sugar info.

Also just wanted you all to know how great this thread is. Today was one of those days when I constantly caught myself thinking and wanting my favourite binge foods and then fighting to convince myself that a whole cake is not a good idea for dinner. I just kept coming back to this thread and it helped me push through.

Welcome Faustic and Claudegee! I hope you find this thread as helpful and motivating as I do!

days without binging: 7 woo hoo! Hopefully I can make it as far as Sharonclaire and kae1106

Hiya Everyone!  Back from the weekend and still binge free!  Although, weekends are kinda my safe zone and while I didn't binge, I definetely overate.  I LOOOVVVE homemade sundae's!

Monday's are soooooo hard, no more sweets until the weekend!  (I can only have them when my boyfriend's around - I don't binge when he's there so I make him take all the left over binge goodies to his house on Sunday's hee hee.)

I can do it!

Days without binging: 6 and working on #7.  just have to keep it together for a little while longer!

Hi Sharon and Kae - you two are such inspiriation - Day 9 already!  wow!

Liora, I have the same type of problem, if it's in the house, I'll eat it.  This week I haven't brought anything that I binge on into the house so when i go looking for it, it just isn't there.  I think I overdosed on veggies though tonite.  I didn't think that could happen!  Oh well, at least it wasn't bingeing!

Feel better soon Rampantbunnylove! We're all here for you.

Hiya!  I've been kickboxing for 5 years and I LOVE it.  You can definetly burn 500-700 per class but it all depends on how much you put into it.  It also depends on the kind of class also.  A Cardio Kickboxing class will burn a good amount of calories but if you are trying out an actual club that's like a karate club the first couple weeks of classes probably won't burn that much for you because you'll be working on technique a lot.

All in all though, no matter which one you try they are all good exercise and a full body workout.  There's also no limit to how much and how far you can go.  I actually fight but there are a lot of people at my gym that just do it for fun and exercise.  You'll meet lots of great people too!

Have fun!

Hey T_K, Thanks so much for the deep breathing idea!  I did that for a good 15 minutes before training on Saturday morning and even though I had an an awkward day (had to work with a new training partner) I still felt good about it.  I was able to get to some good creative visualization in too.

still nervous but psyched to get in there on Friday.

also helps that today is my last day for windsprints for this fight - I HATE windsprints.

one of my favourite milk subs is almond milk, sooo creamy and delicious especially for hot chocolate!  Almond breeze has original, vanilla & Chocolate both sweetened and unsweeted.  and only 40 cals/cup.

Thanks!  Just having the two of you respond actually helps alot as well.  I've been training for this for soooo long that everyone else I know is kinda sick of hearing about it.  I've been doing to the creative visualization but sometimes when I do that I start thinking about what could go wrong (a little bit of over anaylzing I think).  I'll definetly try the deep breathing.

ainedb,  I was like that too when I started, it just clicked for me right away.  I only do modifyed Muay Thai though (no elbows allowed where I live).
