I actually just got back from the ER yesterday from an awful flare up myself. Although diet is important, most of my flare-ups tend to be stress related. Remember that when you feel upset about this...it is hard for it to go away when your entire body system is sad in general. Try to be optimistic and eat easy and healthy is really the best you can do.

Weird, um...

I haven't been on this site in at least 6 months or so until now because I'm having a very similar if not the same issue.

What I've discovered is that there is one little corner to 'high me', that, if provoked, comes out. And it makes me shove myself full almost to a point of explosion. I ate 8 full meals today, my last day off before school starts again. I feel absolutely terrible being it's my third day in a row doing so. And then I get afraid and guilty about doing it, and it makes me do it again and again until I feel sick.

I get high in the evenings and sometimes on my days off to help me take a mental break from the panic attacks I get during the work week day hours as well. I kinda have been for years, more so at times or less so than others.

I've been a pretty healthy eater after using this site all of last year, until now. I lost my gym membership because I can't afford it anymore and want to quit drinking, and this leaves me at home, around lots of food, high and hungrier than a stray.

I've decided that learning to treat one extreme with another only leads you to an overindulgent personality. If i quit smoking I have to drink, if I'm nervous I have to lock my door for a week or smoke until it doesn't matter anymore, if I'm hungry I have to eat until my stomach hurts, if I open a bottle of vodka I have to finish it, I have to have the most fun possible, the most satisfaction, eat the most, buy all the shoes I want at once, one or the other or both. I'm just trying to figure out another healthier habit to pick up that can bring me pleasure to help try and phase me out of all of these other ones, until I can really shake this need for over-doing everything to make up for everything else.

Good luck in 2009, I might be stopping by here more often again as the need arises for my changes I'll be making this year.

Fitness Heart Rate/Calories burned Question...complicated? Jun 14 2008
15:24 (UTC)
2

ahhh I've been pondering this question for sooo long! glad to see I'm not alone.

I'm a naturally smaller person for the most part, and I eat a lot of calories when I'm not monitoring for anything special or trying to do anything to my diet (we're talking something like...2,500-4,000 cals daily.) The website says with my stats that on sedentary I only burn 1575 cals a day, which mathematically makes like NO sense. I haven't gained weight since I lost 9 pounds last spring, and I haven't been limiting my calories really at all.

Anyway, when I'm jogging super slow my heart rate is averagely about 198 and I'm 21, so recommended level (meaning to not get passy-outy) is to not go above 180 (it's 160-180 recommended for average healthy 20-24 yr old individuals at the cardio level btw. It's 130-160 bpm for a "fat burn" and anything below that isn't benefiting the heart much----for an average person our age anyway. Of course your situation might and most likely will be different!)

I figure maybe since my heart rate fluctuates so much, and gets so high all of the time, it can account for a high metabolism sort of effect where I burn through more calories? I mean, after drinking coffee for a few days I usually lose a little weight even! (Not water weight, I drink at least 9 glasses a day.)

So I want to know! Does elevated heart rate help to burn more calories than average???

p.s. I went to the link and it told me that cardio for 20 minutes at 160 bpm is burning 281 calories, which is grossly overestimated. When cycling at the gym on a machine for 20 minutes, the machine tells me I've bunt about 140, which is supposedly 50-100% more than what you actually burn according to my instructor at the gym. Something is definitely wrong with using that calculator for this situation, so I wouldn't listen to anything it spits out.

Every time I eat out or cook a large, special meal to have with my boyfriend I usually just don't log it anymore...(we are very busy so it happens often that I will cook his favorite meal just to get him to put down whatever electronic he's working on and come spend an hour with me in the kitchen.) I often go over 1 or 2 thousand calories the times I have logged it, and, uhh, that is really scary and depressing. I do this a couple nights a week though at least, and have been for the past month and a half, I've gained no weight at all. Therefore I have decided that it must be good for my metabolism and mentally healthier to freak out about calories a little less. The stress free-ness of it has been helping me I think. So maybe it's kinda cheating but I think it's good for me to not care about a website's report card so much.

Weight Loss Do men really prefer curvier girls? Apr 12 2008

First of all, the dominant cat calling annoying men are quite often not being serious when they are being jerks like that to small women. The smaller women appear more vulnerable I think to dudes and it is funnier to pick on them because they know you get it all the time, and hey, if you're stupid enough to give them your number or go hang out with them after they treated you like that, they might get some so they have no reason to stop really (other then growing up, of course.) Those are like, clubbers, dudes who think if they by you a drink their gonna get you to go home with them, or dudes with extreme senses of humor (I have mostly guys friends...it IS funny when it's not you sometimes.) Those ones are totally pulling your leg.

My lover of three years hooked up with me when I was handicapped and at my highest weight, caring least about my appearance and having the least self confidence of all time, afraid of almost all men. Now I'm back in shape and he still loves it, supports me and congratulates me constantly, although it was almost the same all along. I think he just likes anything I do and it doesn't matter. I don't think it ever matters if you are in love with somebody.

What matters to me is why the **** would you care what some 10 year old grown man has to say about your curves? He's too busy watching MTV and letting the television tell him what he wants that he can't even begin to decide for himself, and that's why I don't allow strange men to have the satisfaction of me saying a thing back to them beyond "grow up you sick, stupid f*******."

sorry if that's kinda intense lol

psh I danno. I was just voicin' an opinion, obviously the environment is suffering more than I so far that we know of anyway, and like I said I still drink it all day every day. The part I was referring to about doing stuff about it I guess was more pointing toward  more long term studies being done. An article I was reading the other week had some scientists complaining that there wasn't enough funding to do the studies and that made me sad. I didn't mean to start pointing fingers about stuff or nothin!

This is old news for sure, but it doesn't mean it's not something to be concerned about. People have known about this for years and haven't done anything about it. Is that cool or what? On top of this, my best friend is an environmentalist in grad school right now and she says NEVER EVER drink tap water, that it can even make you 'sick.' Do I still drink it? Of course I do. Do I want something to be done about it real soon? Most definitely.

if you aren't pushing yourself constantly, you will stop seeing results. You have to add more weights to your sit ups to continue toning your muscles (i use a machine, but i'm sure there is a way to do this with free weights also)

Fitness Not running as fast? Mar 08 2008
21:47 (UTC)
2

I bet that since you are still using the muscles a few times a week and getting that cardio in at all, you will be able to go significantly faster when you come back. I just got back from spring break (a week and a half off...I only exercised once!) and my first day of running I went from an average stay of 5.5 mph for 15 minutes no break to 6mph 15 minutes no break...and that isn't including the fact that I actually pushed myself up to 7 mph for 3 whole minutes in the same half hour on the treadmill! I was so proud. Also long distance training and sprinting (for speed) are taught generally as two different types of running, if you are in it for the long distance, you should be absolutely fine. My endurance tends to only grow with a nice vacation, and if I go a week without pushing myself I tend to go for longer the next as well. If you keep running here and there, you're body should be tricked into keeping your progress for next time you are pushing yourself harder, instead of receding like you may have thought. Quitting for that many weeks altogether obviously you could suffer a little from, but you seem to still be on track just fine. I wouldn't worry and keep up with the occasional practice until you get back!

Also if you do get worried, like I said, the sprinting and seeing how long/fast you can go will give you really quick results and bounce you right back if you are concerned about speed. I always try to include a section of seeing how fast I can go with my endurance section of seeing how long I can go, just to push myself a little each time in preparation for the eventual change of going a little faster for the longer run. I have been upping about .1 mph a week for my endurance section this way: I do ten minutes of seeing how fast I can go for as long as I can, then I go real slow and get down to 4.0 for 2 minutes as a little rest, and then I do the half hour run/jog/whatever speed I am up to at that point. I'm sure you could push yourself better if need be, but I am quite content with my results so far!

lifitng weights working the legs with high reps...I see a huge difference in only a week or two. Particularly the working the soleus (back of calves) really makes a shapely difference, for me at least.
Fitness I want skinny Legs Mar 08 2008
21:29 (UTC)
I am in that boat, however mine are shapeley due to muscle... I've had extremely muscular legs since I were merely a kid (probably due to all of my hiking, biking and constant blading I was always engaged in, along with genes.) I started lifting a couple of months ago and they actually increased in size, and so I am simply going to do much fewer reps on the legs from now on. This may or may not be your individual case, but for me all the shapely-ness is actually due to the muscle! Higher reps make the muscle larger, and so I am going to avoid such from now on. I have seen slight improvements in the last two weeks, if it helps at all.

Weight Loss question about the weight loss chart Mar 08 2008
20:19 (UTC)
I was kinda wondering the same thing! the green line always says I weigh 4 pounds more for some reason, and I only log in weight like every week or two! From reading others opinions though I see how it would be more beneficial to somebody who weighs in often and regularly. It's maybe figuring things for you that you may not need it to at times if you only weigh in once in a while.

I second the running in place! I find just 5-10 minutes of that makes me feel quite a bit better if I can't make it in time to the gym before close. (With a walking around in circles warm up, of course!) or stairs can be a good warmup too. I do feel very silly but that kind of adds to the fun!

Maybe I should clarify a lil':

I'm from Ann Arbor Michigan(incase any of you know about the place...) it's known for it's wide variety of hole-in-wall delicious ethnic food places, so no chain restaurants. And for further clarification, on of the family friend chefs I was speaking of that Ivisit at least weekly is most often my boyfriends Chilean family. I couldn't ask to change ingredients, as that would be rude unfortunately!

I think I was looking for help with maybe...visualizing? Like for instance---what does 4oz of rice look like? Or meat? Is all meat similar weight? I eat a lotta fish...is that totally different ball game here? Any tips/ advice really would be nice, as I see maybe it IS infact better to log something other than nothing as this is a few times a week.

Oh and thanks for the veggie tip gijane ...we usually do d'oevres so I try to take my picking! And the alcohol thing, I had no idea. very useful, indeed, as it is somewhat a tradition to shower me with fancy beers and pisco sours

Foods Avocados Anyone??? Mar 08 2008

When I go without avocados I actually feel worse! Eating them with dinner or breakfast really helps me kick cravings for sugar and fried foods...they are very satisfying. Anyone who can't taste them forgot to salt them! And to add to the toast thing....put a few tomato slices on top...and when unconcerned about calories, first soak the tomatoes in about a tsp or more of oil with pepper and salt, and then cover with a slice of munster cheese and stick in the oven for five minutes. I like to call it a little slice of heaven!! AH now I'm hungry

In women, they usually stop vertically growing 3 years after their period or about age seventeen. They continue growing until age 21 but not necessarily vertically or quickly, and there isn't a way to tell if you've 'stopped'. For men it's generally age 25. I'm 20 and I still eat like a teen because I'm still growing---I'm really hungry, and often. Can't beat yourself up for that...and I certainly don't want to effect my maturation! I swear I've still got a dose of huge breasts coming here any minute! lol

no but seriously, in my opinion...don't stunt your growth with too harsh of a diet! What if you could be a little taller or have a little more hips??????????????????

okay, now, I didn't read page threeeee, buuuttt;

I am 5'7 (almost, a little less) 108 pounds, and my calves are 14.5 inches. My point is they may not go away, but girlfriends, I probably have the largest boot collection you will ever see (48+ pairs). How do I do it?

I wear stylish boots that are LOOSE and CLUNKY and riding boots and pixie boots and slouch boots and pirate boots and frye boots....(the list goes on.) Unless you've got like, smaller than a size 6 shoe, HELLOOO! How could you ever give up boots for your calves????? There is definitely a way to work around things, if anybody knows about the calves I certainly do, lol, 'cause mine probably ain't never going away!

Also if you wear tall loose boots, you can even wear (gasp) a mini skirt!!!

(the large boots actually make thighs appear smaller as a plus, AND mask large calves. I wouldn't give up my knee high motorcycle boots if my house was on fire!!)

Have some hope, my goodness everyone!

*and I might add that some round toe flats look so cute with shapely larger calves of any size. especially with the right skirt or leggings or capris! Granted they aren't good on the ole feet...they are oh so convenient for a hot weather alternative to sandals and heels.

muttlover--

come to think of it perhaps that is why they seem so alien in person! (well, besides being tall and weird looking in the first place of course if referring to a runway model)

we can't smell their normal pheromones perhaps with an absence of normal hormonal cycles...and it can be reflected to an extent in picture reaction like the previous post about looking at faces and judging attractivity. You know like, an example of these guys doing their work would be like how when women live together their menstrual cycles tend to sync up, or the smell test (women are attracted to men's smells that reflect opposite genes of their own, and feel closer to those that smell much like the genetic makeup of their fathers.)

There is an exact science to being 'attractive' in a body structural way for women because men are (i believe it's between 70-85%) more visual when it comes to stimulation where as women base attraction (either 10-20%, I forget) on visual appearance. It's a ratio, preserving the hourglass idea again between hips waist and bust reflecting a womans ability to efficiently bear children. The being shorter or more frail simply emphasizes the femininity to many men I would imagine, but I never read about any science in that particular field.

And of course these aren't strict rules...simply something interesting I studied in an anthropology class. Thought I'd share. Lord knows what I think is attractive is definitely not the norm!

here's some fun links on the subjects

Last time I checked surgeons can't add muscle to your body O_o

No, but what does adding muscle have to do with getting a lean/flat stomach?

Abs = muscles? Or maybe my lack of sleep is finally kicking in -_-

Sorry, I misspoke. How does adding to a muscle help with making it leaner or flatter?

Weight Loss Question about fat/muscle loss Feb 29 2008
18:37 (UTC)
2

what I was saying, badandrew, is that when other people are talking about losing muscle mass, they are talking about working out usually, and you brought up an argument against other people saying that they say you lose "muscle before fat." So I was arguing back that they were not talking about the same thing. There are too many factors in this argument. Do you know what I mean?

also the desert quote is agreeing with you only on an immediate basis. You are right, on an immediate basis. If you had continued to quote me into the next paragraph you would see that starvation mode doesn't start adjusting so quickly and it takes time to start eating your muscle. Now I don't know if your friends who fasted for 14 days are in starvation mode or not, I'm not that much of an expert, but I do know you usually can't tell when you are losing muscle until it gets severe, so you don't know that unless they were tested for their lean body mass the day before fasting and the day they were done with a professional. And I don't have any actual sources here because I don't care so much if you believe me or not...that is your choice. But obviously you are being overruled here in this thread by people who are much more knowledgeable on the subject so who cares. You're right, I'm just pulling crap out of my butt to prove you wrong because...(?) Maybe some people do that, I don't know. Believe what you want, again, you are ignoring what I said completely just to give off the idea that you are completely right, which is not what I said so...whatever.

maacattack- my fitness instructor told me that you don't have to do cardio to burn mainly the 'fat calories' if you want to just powerwalk---for most people that is okay. But doing cardio burns many more of all calories more quickly, so many people opt for that as it tends to have more health benefits to the heart as well. Really I personally just stick to cardio because I am in a healthy position where I can, and I get more done more quickly---going back to what angie said, basically.

Angie and melkor probably said everything the best here. I am just putting things into much simpler terms. I'm spent!

Weight Loss What constitutes a binge? Feb 29 2008
18:26 (UTC)
1

I think everyone put it very well, what specifically constitutes it can vary from person to person and what is abnormal for them if they don't have issues. after reading that definition it worries me that I had a disorder before...in november when I first joined the site I was scared silly at the amount of calories I was consuming regularly and usually uncontrollably for fun or for no reason (in excess of 4,000.) It scared the crap out of me! It's no wonder I walked around looking like I was always pregnant and always felt like crap all of the time! I am so glad I was awakened and am trying to change and eat at normal times, normal amounts of food...and normal foods (not like chicken nuggets dipped in peanut butter with 4-5 items from taco bell and an ice cream sandwich or three, while skipping breakfast and lunch and all snacks prior....lol.) I was binging every single day or every other day, depending on my schedule and when and where we went out to eat. I was making up for it by holding back breakfast lunch and snacks, but I don't think I did it consciously or anything (like to not get fat). It was yikes! I am glad and I feel much better now, even if I still blow it sometimes here and there.

lol sorry it's so long I just...realized maybe I used to have a disorder...which is weird I guess. Cool. Hooray for fixing it.
