Weight Loss How many calories is reasonable for me to reach my goal of about 105 pounds at 5'5"? (as a young teenage girl) Jul 06 2009

http://www.bcm.edu/cnrc/bodycomp/bmiz2.html

Use this website if you are really concerned about your calorie intake. I've already plugged in your numbers:

Your BMI is 19.2. The minimum your BMI should be to be considered healthy (not underweight) is 18.5.

Your percentile is 39.5. This means 60.5% of kids your height and age weigh MORE than you.

Based on just what you do now (very active), you NEED (not optional, this is for basic bodily function) 2920 calories. For context, that is about one GALLON of Breyers triple chocolate ice cream.

You do not, I repeat IN CAPS for emphasis, you DO NOT need to lose any weight. I would expect you to grow a little more so there is absolutely no reason for you to consider weight loss. To do so would be DANGEROUS. If you want to lose "flab," start a weight training regimen or some abdominal exercises to build up that muscle. And don't be afraid of "bulking up" or gaining weight. If anything, muscle erases all the jiggly stuff you may be loathing.

For celebrity context (these are are people who are 5'5):

Tara Reid and Courtney Cox weigh about 110 (as far as I could pick out), Mia Hamm weighs about 125, LeAnn Rimes weighs 115, and this person:

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k264/waynes terr/1156148448_JessicaBarton1.jpg

weighs 108 (edit: She is also your height, about 5'5, and a model). You fit right in with the tabloid world already. Please don't try to lose any weight.

Weight Loss I weigh more than ever before Dec 15 2008
01:35 (UTC)

omg I am exactly where you are. I weight 197, after really falling off the again from 175 lb in August. But listen, every time you make a mistake, think of the next minute as a time to start over. Log it and try to stick to healthier foods for this day. Think about what you could've eaten at McDonalds that might be a little better calorie wise-so you can do it next time you go to Mickey D's. I did the same thing, every time I made a mistake, I gave up and binged. Now in Dec, I'm paying for that attitude. Just chalk it up and try to "be good" for the rest of the day. you still have at least 500-ish calories to go. You'll be surprised how little calories some foods you may like have (or how much!).

Yay! I go an "A"

90.91% to be exact. Guess I'm more suited to run for Congress than some politicians. I'm not surprised that so few (only half of "Joe the Plumbers" and less elected officials! knew that CONGRESS declares war, not the president. But then again, Congress hasn't officially declared war since 1941)

I also took a college equivalent course on Civics two years ago so I had somewhat of an advantage. I got the ones about the "Lincoln Douglas debate", "what it means  when government debt = 0", and about "why free market systems are better" wrong though.

Health & Support How do I stop binging??? Nov 23 2008

I have your exact same problem.

I'm assuming that your binge eating (if it is as severe as "I severely overeat regularly like 5,000 or more cal per day", not "I had a pint of ice cream just this once today") is resulting from some sort of sadness, anger, mixture of the two, but are the basis of unresolved feelings that, by cramming food into your mouth, you can't express. What I do is I (almost literally) drop the food, go to a place where I feel like I can yell, scream, cry (if need be) and just talk to myself (say what I'm feeling). By doing that, I gained a lot of insight into why I was binging and I sought proper psychological help for it. Now my binges are much less frequent (I still occasionally slip)

Also, if you binged in a sitting, never let "oh well, get I'll start getting back on track tomorrow" creep into your thoughts. Admit what you did, and try to do better trough the rest of the day. That attitude of giving up, I think, is the real reason I gained so much weight (80 pounds). I didn't care enough about myself to make the change, but that's another issue for my shrink...

If this has no application to your situation whatsoever or doesn't even remotely help, then, well...hi!

Health & Support I might have mono, help? Nov 22 2008
17:24 (UTC)

My ex boyfriend got really bad mono right after we started dating (my bad...), and what he did was stay in bed, used a humidifier, and drank lots and lots of water. He says that applesauce helped his throat (he couldn't really chew or swallow, and it really hurt for him to breathe, and applesauce was the only thing he could really eat) Hopefully you don't have it as bad as he did. It took him about 2 weeks to get over the really bad part and about a month to fully recover (as in, not fatigued and weak and without an appetite).

But start resting right away or it will get really, really bad and painful (that's why my ex's was so bad, he waited a whole week to see the doctor and another to find out it was mono)

Foods Instant oatmeal? Nov 22 2008
17:17 (UTC)

It really isn't bad. A tip I use to compare sugar v. fiber is the 5 more-5 less rule, the if what you are eating has 5 grams or more fiber and 5 grams or less sugar, then its rather ok because you are at least getting half of the total carbs are good ones and not bad ones.

But I actually bought the exact same brand you mentioned (cinnamon swirl flavor) and I have to say that it is quite delicious.

Weight Loss Common Mistake | Don't Make This Mistake Oct 27 2008

People don't write down what they eat. For me, it has been crucial to any recovery for my binge eating disorder and any weight loss that results.

By tracking how many calories you are consuming, you can get a better assessment of your overall eating patterns. Waste calories on soft drinks? Eat too much at a specific time? Tendency to eat unhealthy while doing certain things (watching TV!)? All that insight can be gained from a journal.

People tend to underestimate how many calories they consume. Any time I ever lost weight, I did it by tracking my daily intake, and it also motivates me to eat up to my limit so I don't hit starvation mode or malnourish myself in an attempt to see results faster (I'm incredibly impatient, hence why I tend to give up on weight loss pretty quickly).

Weight Loss Anyone tried The Warrior Diet? Jul 31 2008

This sounds like something I used to do: binge eat. And I went from 105 to 182. Any diet that promotes starvation is b-s. That would destroy your metabolism.

Health & Support Except for pregnant women, why do people say they "crave" a food when they really just want the taste of it? Jul 21 2008
14:26 (UTC)

Well, when I had a craving, it would consume all of my thoughts and attention. The entire day, I would focus on nothing else but that food. It was debilitating, because I started severely overeating on everything (even peas! I ate two family sized bags of frozen peas when I started craving that). For me, it was partly emotional, partly physical since I was overeating on foods that had nutrients I wasn't getting on a rice-and-beans only diet. Now that I've gotten a much more varied, better diet, my cravings have been severely reduced, and they are controllable.

Health & Support need advice for preparing for a fast- please help! Jul 20 2008

I fast for Ramadan, and I find that any really protein filled breakfast keeps me mostly full. I would eat a huge breakfast (which you should do anyway) and that may help you when it comes time for dinner. Drink water first, and that might also help (because I'm assuming you don't drink water either, at least that is what I as told by my observant Jewish friends). But most importantly, I find that if I'm too focused on how to stay not hungry, I forget the whole reason of the fast. Keep your religious goal primary to any tricks to stave hunger, keep metabolism revved, whatever. Obviously, this tradition means something to you, and focus on what it means to you spiritually.  (Ramadan means something to me, which is why in the end, I stop caring about the hunger and focus on how happy God is with me that I am fasting and watch myself grow as a Muslim, and as a person-you really gain appreciation for those who suffer from hunger in our world)

Weight Loss gaining .4 lbs a day.....HELP!!! EDITED:July 20th Jul 18 2008
15:40 (UTC)

I am having that same fluctuation (between 177 to 179). But seriously, it could be all the water you're drinking (retaining itself), it could be muscle that you've gained by exercising. It could be ANYTHING. After I eat, my weight goes up to 180.

I understand the frustration watching those numbers (especially for me watching the numbers over the years go from 105 to 182) twiddle back and forth. When I feel like breaking the scale, I mentally think about how much better I feel when I get off my butt and exercise, how much healthier and happier I feel. And that doesn't come from numbers. I am happy for you that you have taken the initiative and started to invest in healthier habits. Be happy for yourself too.

Health & Support OH hey thanks all you MDs for misdiagnosing me for TEN YEARS. Good news: I do not have panic disorder Jul 11 2008

Oh, I'm sorry. My mother has the other type of bipolar disorder (the "fun" one, with the crazy highs and not-fun manic episodes) so I kinda sorta understand the situation relating to your disorder, I guess. But it's good that you are losing weight (even though through maybe unhealthy means), and seemingly putting you on better medicine than lithium. Bipolar drugs are the worst, with such ugly side effects, at least the primitive stuff I remember.

You are definitely not weak. And I'm sorry you had to wait so long for relief. I've had the opposite happen, where doctors diagnosed me with bipolar disorder, anxiety depression, regular depression, you name it. It took 10 years to figure out that I was just having issues with my family. And now, having moved away, everyone says I'm fine. Tongue outAh, doctors....

Well, this was a rant. Next time I won't lash out on a forum. I understand that some people do have health issues despite looking "thin" (like diabetes or such) and some people have eating disorders. I had one myself. I just got caught up in the whole mess of things, particularly family issues again. I just read my post again today. That definitely wasn't me thinking straight. I apologize to whomever I offended

Weight Gain Confused about my body/weight. Question Jul 08 2008
14:26 (UTC)
2

Weight training is a specific form of resistance training. Activities like pushups and other exercises that incorporate resistance are resistance training. Weight training is just resistance training with weights as resistance.Undecided umm, got all that?

While weight training, I maintain the same calorie intake. Those who up their calories while weight training are more serious bodybuilders and others who want to gain (which I don't think is your goal). Of course, doing more exercise means you are burning calories, but you don't burn a lot of calories with weight training as opposed to cardio. So don't make that mistake of eating more to compensate for calories you haven't lost.

I've had these and I love them! They are really small but really satisfying for me, and I am able to stave off hunger until lunch when I don't feel like cooking an egg white omelette (which is pretty frequently). These are great!

Young Calorie Counters At what time did you start to notice your weight? Jul 07 2008

I noticed it when my family (who are Arab and puts lots of emphasis on weight) started telling me that I needed to lose weight in order to be pretty and be attractive to a man (They told me this at age 11).

They (my aunt and my grandfather whom I live with) put me on a really strict diet and I dropped 30 pounds, but grew to resent them and started binge eating on sweets to piss them off (like I would eat 10 Little Debbie's at once or a half gallon of ice cream).

Now I'm 180 and can't control my bingeing. It's funny because when I was little, my mom and dad was poor so I went hungry alot (like days without food, and I used to eat the most). My family used to say I was beautiful back then. They started calling me fat when I was 8 (when I got put in foster care and started getting regular meals), and I've never felt beautiful since. My family ties my beauty to my weight so I've never heard them call me pretty or anything else but fat. They also make fun of me behind my back, talking about my weight to their friends and other relatives. And they wonder why I despise them.

(Isn't it just fantastic that I actually had to starve to fit my family's definition of beautiful Tongue out. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way)

If you ever read the 100 calorie pack nutrition info, you'll find that at least 25% of the calories are from fat. 100 calorie packs are a sham. There are plenty of other great foods that you can eat lots more of without consuming so many calories. Try looking up the "energy density" principle.

Foods Addicted to ASPARTAME May 31 2008

I would be careful and monitor how much you use because it can lead to metabolic disorders and cancer. The key word here is CAN. It's not incredibly dangerous, but I would limit how much I take in. It's been shown that people who drink diet sodas are 50% more likely to gain weight and that aspartame is addictive. Aspartame will not completely prevent diabetes and it does create insulin spikes like any other simple sugar.  You can always have too much of a good thing. I limit myself to two sodas w/ aspartame a week at the most (and no sodas with HFCS). Besides, a lot of the sweets with aspartame have lots of fat in them to replace the lack of sugar. There are more delicious and healthy things out there

Young Calorie Counters Dealing with being called fat... Apr 23 2008

Just remember that you are not fat! You don't have to take his guff. My family says the same nasty things to me, calling a fat slob, among other things, but it's only because they are unsatisfied with themselves and jealous of what I've achieved (Im going to be the first in my family to attend and finish college). Just remind yourself that his issue probably has nothing to do with you, and get some counseling, because if this is how you live on a regular basis, its going to come back and haunt you and you might turn to anorexia or bulimia to cope (I know how it feels, and I turned to binge eating)

Well, in terms of calories you technically haven't "screwed yourself". But nutrition isn't about just staying under a calorie limit. It's about balance in your diet, and skinny people can have heart attacks too. If you feel demoralized, just forgive yourself, and start over at that moment.

Any resources on binge eating disorder. I've had it for 9 years, and I'm trying to recover, but I'm only 17 and I'm kind of going it alone, since I don't really have a resource and can't really submit myself to intensive recuperation programs (I also technically don't fit the criteria since I don't have binges as frequently as twice a week). Any help for someone like me?

Weight Loss A little reassurance.... please!! Apr 13 2008

Good for you on the weight loss! Like sas101 said, you've probably hit a plateau. Just continue doing what you are doing, maybe change up the exercise to something more intense. Also, just because it good to do, recalculate your RMR (resting metabolic rate) because as you continue to lose weight, your RMR will shrink and you won't need as many calories to stay alive. And don't listen to your boyfriend. Trying adding in a little more drinks like coffee and tea to push up your calorie count (if you aren't already, who CAN go without wonderful coffee?!), but be careful because unregulated liquid calories will reverse weight loss (learned the hard way!).

Young Calorie Counters What can you do, physically? Apr 13 2008
15:24 (UTC)

Weight training is kind of the only physical activity that I am decent at (I used to play softball, but I wasn't that good). I took the class 9th grade, am going to take it again, and try to do weightlifting in my spare time. I've gotten kind of lazy so I've lost muscle strength, but my highest bench was 200. It's really good for when you lose weight because when you begin dropping pounds, your body needs less calories than before but you continue to eat the same amount, so you end up gaining the weight back (which is what usually happens). By working your muscles and getting them bigger, you up your metabolism and you can still consume more calories.

Fitness What counts as good solid weight training? Apr 09 2008
23:49 (UTC)

If you can do 20 reps, you need to up the weight to 8-12 reps. You may need different weights for stronger/weaker muscle groups. And be careful to avoid muscle unevenness, where a muscle ends up being stronger than its opposite. You don't want weak triceps or back problems, and focus on those lower exercises.

Motivation Weight Gaining Advice Please. Jan 03 2008

Eat carbs if you want to gain weight because your body will not tolerate overeating when it comes to protein. A human can only ingest (without feeling sick) about 700 extra protein calories as opposed to about 1,000 calories for carbs. Fit more carbs in there (good carbs, no wonder bread) . The only thing that doesn't look right is the buttered popcorn and other junk. You want to gain weight (and i assume you mean muscle, not fat)

And of course, take weight training (which I assume you are doing).
