I haven't been around much lately, but I want to say Happy Easter to all!  Smile

I don't know why, but I'm absolutely starving today... I'm already at almost 1000 calories, and craving everything I (thankfully) don't have in the house.... french fries, fish sticks, pumpkin pie --aaghhh. I don't ever eat those things, WHY is that all I want today??    :)

I'm still here too,  but a little disappointed also.  I would check in every day, but doesn't seem like anything is happening.  no challenge... no leader.... not  many people.

Maybe if it hadn't been closed, we'd have a few more that were actually interested, who knows.

I think we'll have to start a different group, same people, different name, & invite everybody....

any takers for a leader????  Wink

I just dont get how you can know exactly how many calories you are eating. It is so much work to figure it all out. I don't have the time to add up everything I am eating. Like, how many calories are in 3 medium strawberries? or 7 jelly beans, or homemade spagetti (lean meat)...Its just too time consuming to look up each ingredient.

If you are serious about knowing the calories you are actually eating in a day, you need to invest in a kitchen scale - digital is best.  that way you can weigh everything you put in your mouth, and say you eat 7 jelly beans, weigh them (OR if you eat them first, just count out 7 more if you have them, put them on the scale & see what it comes out as, then log it into cc)  you can adjust just about every item in cc database to be in ounces or grams, which is very precise.(choose "other" for serving size and input it exactly)  My teenage girls are just maintaining, but are vigilant with what they eat, so they weigh or measure everything the night before and write it down, that way they know the calories in everything they eat during the day while not home.

The problem  is that if you don't log everything you eat, you may be really surprised at how many calories are in those few small things you are eating.  ie, a few candies, a handful of chips, a couple of crackers, creamer in coffee -- they all add up quickly. on the other hand, if you're popping radishes or cucumber slices, not so many calories there!

If you are making homemade spaghetti sauce(or anything), there is a place where you can input any recipe (foods tab) and it will give you the exact nutrition info of what you are eating.  there again, some things home made can be far less calories than bought stuff, or could be more, depends on what you are using for ingredients. Some recipes for sauce I have used call for like 1/4 or 1/2 cup olive oil, I always cut it back to zero or no more than 1 TBsp, and then see the difference it makes in the calories on that one! Little changes make huge differences, and it all adds up over time.  I  adjust recipes to use extra lean ground beef or ground turkey/chicken  instead of regular beef, leave out the oil, no sugar, low salt or just use something like Mrs. Dash seasonings, then input them into the 'new recipe' area on cc and add one serving to my food log. then I tag it if I have more I will be eating at another time, or if I will make it again.  That way it's faster next time to log!

:)

I think she looks like a very happy girl that has a great home!

My best guess would be she most looks like a Lab crossed with maybe a Jindo, note the eye expression, head type, and body shape. the smaller ears than typical lab could come from here too.  cross that with the  shorter coat and droopier ears of the lab, and I think it comes close.

perhaps staffordshire could be in there too, but the expression is much closer to the Jindo, I think.  That said, she could be a mix of half a dozen unsuspecting  breeds, taking a little from each,

so to me, she most looks like a  *happy* lab cross

Who doesn't get at least 500 mg of sodium per day? (low, low sodium)    and what would be detrimental to low sodium, unless you're talking below 500mg?

Missgendale, imo  I would classify grilled chicken from any fast food menu to be "junk" mostly because of the high sodium it contains (I think McDonald's chicken is about 3/4 of the rdi) and because of  the white bun.   :)

My week.....  not the winner,  but here it is anyway:

Wednesday I had a subway salad, which I don't really classify as junk food, it has plain chicken breast pieces, low in sodium, and the rest is all veggies & low fat, low sodium dressing.  It doesn't matter tooo much if it counts or not anyway...... because I blew it yesterday (sunday) as my daughter & I shared a new york fries.  this is something I only get about twice a year or so, and my daughter & I had a nice afternoon out, and decided to splurge together; so I don't regret it, either!

Do we have another challenge yet??  Smile

OK, I can't compete with 25 glasses of water per day but I'll post mine anyway.

On a personal level, I'm  pretty happy with my intake, 72 ounces per day is my personal minimum, I feel hydrated, but I don't have to "go" every 10 minutes, LOL

Mon:  84 ounces

Tues:  72 ounces

Wed:  72 ounces

Thurs:  74 ounces

Fri:  72 ounces

Sat:  54 ounces

Sun:  72 ounces =   Total:  500 ounces

p.s. Erinlf & energygirl, what's a Nalgene??

Next challenge??  maybe we could vote by friday or saturday or sunday afternoons, that way we can get started first thing monday morning every week...

anything exercise would be good, I could use some motivation, lol

Original Post by alevin:

"A reasonable amount for a healthy human is one cup of water or any other fluid with each meal. If you have a problem with constipation you may not be drinking enough water, but if you are not constipated, you are getting plenty. "

This is actually a dangerous statement, in that some people who read this may feel justified to drink little or no water a day and feel that coffee, tea, sodas or fruit drinks are equally as good to hydrate the body.

However, let's note that coffee and tea (not herbal) actually dehydrate the body. Please note that both coffee and tea actually do have health benefits in and of themselves, but should not be relied upon as sole fluids, but actually additional water should be consumed for every cup of coffee or tea you drink. (by the way, I drink both, but I also drink sufficient water to compensate)

Sodas have a lot of sodium and sugar (or chemicals for diet soda) and should have additional water consumed to flush these out of the body, and should not be relied upon as fluids alone.

Fruit juices are excellent to drink, though even in their completely natural state have high amounts of sugar, and while drinking juices is beneficial for most people, it is beneficial to also have some water to help with the sugar content.

As far as constipation goes, many people do not understand what constipation is. Many people think "regular" is once every two days, which is erroneous. A diet replete in fiber, both soluble and insoluble and enough fluids will allow for regularity twice every day, although some people may be content with their health at once per day.

To rely upon diet plus one cup of water to get enough fluids is fine only if you are eating almost entirely raw foods, and fruit, nuts, etc. If you are eating a typical north american diet of packaged anything, cooked everything, sodas (diet or not), juices, coffee, tea etc, then you cannot get enough fluids from diet alone.

Water intake is ultimately a personal decision, but please don't recommend that "one cup of ... any other fluid" is sufficent. Otherwise, the kidneys and liver have a harder job to do and over time that can lead to reduced function or disfunction in these organs. IMHO, why take that risk?
Foods Question re: Whole Wheat Spaghetti Jan 30 2008
16:18 (UTC)
2

We have a digital scale (and I  set it to ounces)  so.... I just now weighed our whole wheat spaghetti, and once it arrived at 2 oz, it was 89 strands. However, I continued adding strands and could get 5 more on while still at 2 oz, so a TOTAL of 94 STRANDS is 2 ounces according to our scale, for average ww spaghetti.

And I agree, it is about the size of a nickle (maybe a teeny bit smaller) when you look at it, but I didn't actually get a nickle out, lol.

Though Molly,  I imagine that your friend has probably either long eaten the spaghetti or given up, LOL

I have had terrible concentration problems, losing the thread of a topic or conversation 60 seconds or so after it starts. People have often accused me of not being interested. I find it embarrassing because I sometimes have to ask more than one question to figure out what they are talking about. Until this forum, I never connected the two. I just thought they were right... I wasn't really interested.

Hi Fransen,

I have also had concentration & memory  problems in the past, and although some of that was  alleviated by taking my thyroid medication, what really helped me was taking  vitamin B9, also known as Folic Acid or Folate.

I just know how much it dramatically helped me since my Dr. put me on it.

I would suggest maybe talking to your doctor to see if that would be something you should look into?    here's a quote regarding Folate/Folic Acid/B9:

"Depression, apathy, shortness of breath, dizziness, and anemia can all result from a Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid)  deficiency. Problems with memory and impaired brain and nerve function can also result. "

"Especially at risk for this type of deficiency are the elderly, pregnant women, those who drink excessive quantities of alcohol and women taking the birth control pill."

I know it's a bit off topic, but  just  thought I'd share what worked for me.

Jewell, I think it did have something to do with weight, in that, with the medication, you have much more energy than before. Also, regarding weight, did you or do you smoke? Never mind... with 4 kids, you would never have a weight issue... lol... what happened did they grow up? Glad to see another Canadian too.

I still need some kind of metabolism boost, suggestions? Also, Jewell, in what way do you take Folic Acid.

Sorry, I've been busy and forgot about this thread, lol...

No, I didn't smoke, just busy with the kids like you said... my oldest is 20 and now lives 5 hours away, and I have 2 teenagers and a 5 year old at home.

maybe a bit off topic, but to answer your question, fransen:

As far as the Folic Acid, I started taking it because it counter-acts another medication I am on, and Folic Acid is required to keep everything in balance.  But, I noticed that it cleared up a lot of my memory issues (hypothyroid symptom that I have had for years prior), and my head is much clearer than before, and my mind is sharper.  As I said, some days I would just feel kinda like I was 'in a fog' and I just couldn't shake it.   I have researched folic acid a little, and it is especially recommended to take as you get older, to help fight some of the effects of aging. (also for those trying to get pregnant, but that's obviously not my reason!! lol)  It's just a vitamin of sorts, and completely harmless.

I've heard that about the multivitamins  too, they have to be at least 4 hours before or after thyroid med.

Squarepeg, I've never heard about any relation to hypothyroidism & low-carb diets, what is the theory?? And how does it help?

And, I haven't heard of any specific food interfering with the medication, other than not taking them close together.  Are they saying that if you eat those foods (ie. broccoli, gapefruit)  at all  that it interferes with it, or just in a certain timeframe?

thanks!  Smile

I'm hypothroid too, and like shaufel, also take levothyroxine, (eltroxin); 100 mcg and supposed to be every day, but I'm awful with taking pills, so it amounts to prob. 5 days a week too,  lol. Keep getting tested, every  6weeks to 3 months I think I was, now only once a year.

I'm a bit confused about the whole postmenopausal thing though,  because I was diagnosed when I was 24, after my first baby was about a year old.  My Dr. said it is most often that a woman gets diagnosed after a pregnancy.   I however, did not begin to take any medication (thought I was young, invincible, etc.) until I was 38.  By that time, I had to do something, I felt like I was falling asleep all the time, only with my eyes open which was especially scary when I was driving.  eeekkkYell I started off at 60 mcg, then after 3 mo, was increased to 100 mcg.  I've been on it ever since, with no problems. it's like it doesn't even exist any more.

The biggest difference  now is the energy, and mental clarity.  I also take folic acid, which helps big time with the mental clarity. I always felt like I was in a fog, some days worse than others.  But, I have always had about 3x the normal amount of hair, and that was never affected, I still have 3x more hair than most people.  But I have always had dry skin, and hair  too. Oh, and cold hands.  That's the other thing too, not so cold all the time now.  Before meds, it could be 90 degrees,  and I would still have a sweater on.

The only thing that all the Dr's said was rare, was that I never had a weight issue without taking medication, in fact I was at my all time low during this period. So for me, taking meds or not hasn't had any noticeable effect on my weight.  Now, perhaps menopause will prove to be a different matter altogether, we'll have to see....

One thing that  my Dr. never gave any instruction  about was how/when to take the thyroid medication, it was 2 years later, the pharmiscist  said it works better on an empty stomach, 1-2 hours before food, or at least 2 hours after.   I thought something that important, you'd think he would have told me, but perhaps I was the only one in the dark  lol.

I am not sure about the new fangled tests these days, but one day could be too soon.

My only other advice that helped me is to eat LOTS of spinach, or: take a folic acid supplement;

eat healthy, try not to  stress about it (at least relax if you can)

Weight Loss Cook Book Suggestions? Jan 15 2008
05:35 (UTC)

  • Depending on your budget of course, but I definitely say the slow cooker too,
  • and for time savings, I suggest looking into a pressure cooker pot, I LOVE mine.

ie. if I have time to plan ahead, I use the slow cooker, put ingredients in 1st thing in the morning, or late the night before...

IF I don't have much time, I cook SO MUCH in my pressure cooker... (and it's so simple to use)

ie. cook potatoes in 4 minutes, brown rice in 8-9 min, beans-40-45 min. (cooked from dried) It can cook a whole roast to very very tender in less than 1/2 hour. (depending on size, but usually 4-5 lbs or so)

For example, I LOVE Beans, so I make my own refried... I cook the beans (nothing else added, except maybe onion & garlic) for 45 minutes, then mash them & freeze in small containers or freezer bags for later use.

  • Kinda depends on your schedule & what you like to eat, I definitely second the motion to get a big bowl for salads too! Smile
  • Other than that, if you have the time, I think fresh everything is always best, so a good cutting board and sharp knife (or set of knives) is a great investment, so you can cut up all those yummy vegetables, fruits, etc.
    Smile

Weight Loss 2 Weeks in & going to start to excercise?? Got a Q? Jan 14 2008
22:12 (UTC)

I'm not an exercise guru by any means, but thought I'd let you know what I know (which is not that much) lol,

Initially when you start exercising, make sure you increase your water intake, muscles are known to hold onto water, and I believe that increasing the water can minimize this.  (so, it may appear that you are a wee bit heavier after starting to exercise, due to this, but it's not real weight)

Also, muscle weighs more than fat, so your weight loss rate may slow a bit, in which case you should see your clothes fitting better, but I wouldn't say you would gain weight, unless your calorie deficit isn't enough...

I hope someone else can give you more info than I can Smile
