What's wrong with not wanting extra fat? If a woman was 5'8" and 120 she would be the object of attraction. I do not feel that he was trying to get advice on his ED, I believe he is aware that he needs to gain, but doesn't want to gain fat, he would like to gain muscle. I 'think' he asked the question because he wants to better himself and is fully aware that at 120lbs he is too thin. "Yes I realize I'm underweight and I plan on doing something about that, and this is what this thread is about." -thejabronisayz Being that he is an athlete, and a devoted one at that I am sure he is around physical trainers and doctors a lot. I see his post more as... hey guys yea I'm too skinny but I don't want to be fat... what can I do to gain some muscle besides drinking protein shakes and lifting weights? We all agree that he should drink the protein shakes and in addition up his calories with whole foods as well. He also agrees to try and up his calories... "I'll just try to eat things that I can make reasonable estimates for, like apples, bananas, pita w/ hummus and such. Thanks again " My only advice to that, is that he may want to incorporate healthy fats and more protein. Maybe alvocado and hummus on a pita, a protein bar with PB (easy for on the go), also he could keep dry roasted unsalted almonds on hand for when he's not too hungry but knows his body might need some fuel. He also addressed the issue that he's just not hungry, so in my mind that means he needs to eat more calorie dense food and because he eats only certain times of the day he needs to keep easy items that are available to throw in a gym bag. |

Laura, I agree and disagree with you, I think Americans are getting out of control... he IS eating 3 balanced meals a day and is all about upping his calories. He just wants to make sure he does it in a healthy way. He is not going long periods w/o eating and it sounds like he cares about his health. Now I agree that being underweight is just as bad as being over, however I think all people do well at certain weights. I agree that it sounds like an eating disorder, but what's not an eating disorder these days?!? I would be worried about him a lot more if I found out he was skipping meals and feeling faint after working out. However we do not know that. I agree that he needs to see a doctor to determine what his best plan of action is to bulk up in a healthy way. Also, to the poster... your face looks fantastic, you are a very good looking young man! Do not worry about your face, and believe what other people tell you. I agree that at 120lbs you probably are lanky, so what you are doing (upping calories and lifting weights) would be a good idea. Again... Good Luck :)~ |

I have similar stats... this is what works for me... Pump up the exercise, eat 200 calories more (HEALTHY) and cut out the carbs (most of them). Do that for a few days and trust me... or if carbs are hard for you do something like... one day you have veggies, eggs, lean meats nuts, and the next day have some whole grains and fruit added in and alternate. This works for me. OH... and BLACK coffee up to 5 cups a day... |

First of all GO YOU! That's awesome that you're getting involved and playing sports. I must tell you being involved in HS was the best part when I look back. The biggest thing I got from T&F was learning how to run and jump, I know that sounds lame... however out in the real world sometimes you need/want to run and sometimes you need/want to jump and it's so much better when you know you can. I have a few friends that refuse to run or break a sweat... that's no life to live!!!! |

I am not blessed in that area, even at healthy weights I have had to work hard to keep the girls a little perky. PUSH UPS - GOOD BRA - BUTTERFLY/CHEST PRESSES. It does work... trust me once I stop doing these things they start to relax again and hang lower and lower... 30lbs weight, 3 reps of ten everyother day... OH and do the push ups until you can't do anymore (start with the girl ones and work your way to the mens if you can't). Good Luck~ |

I disagree with the previous post. You obviously want advice on that particular diet, so here it is: (I am not a doctor and I would suggest you talk to one) Right now it's obvious you are eating and exercising to the extent of an 120lb, 19 y/o male. With the added calories you might gain a few lbs, however if the extra calories are protein it is unlikely they will be stored as fat. You said you will be lifting weights and your muscles will need that extra protein to build up. Once your body adjusts to this new diet you may also want to try a table spoon of PB before your workouts, so you don't lose any muscle. I only say this because once your muscles become stronger your body will consume more calories. The big mistake people make when lifting is eating too little, and when you are thin to begin with your body will burn the extra muscle because it won't want to burn the extra calories because you're not eating enough. Just be safe, you don't want to ruin your metabolism before you're an adult!!! Good Luck!~ |

I disagree... I don't ever 'bulk' up on anything... only because if something good comes around I'm bound to have that too... LOL. Sooooooooo, what works for me is, everything in moderation, have a little good with your little bad. So that way when you mess up and have a little too much good you wont be WAY over your calories and you could just go for a quick jog to burn off the extra. That mentality has worked for me. However I guess I'm different, but I've lost 40lbs by doing the moderation thing. Also, nutrition is important to me, so I don't mean skip the veggies and fruit... I just mean eat well balanced like you usually would while you're on a diet and if you have that pastry or awesome pasta in moderation then just hit the gym. |

First Alli is expensive!!! Save the extra money and put it towards high quality organic foods and specialty foods you usually can't afford to jump start your diet! While on my diet I have noticed that healthy food is not bad at all if you have the $$ to spend. |

| Weight Loss | Is Any One Else 5' 8 1/2'' and female? | Jan 20 2008 18:41 (UTC) |

Everyone carries weight different... with that in mind you might have no idea where you'll be happy at if you have always been heavier. For me, I'm 5'8" and 150 is thin, I have large breasts, flat stomach, and a round booty at 180 lbs, however when I am 150 lbs I can count most of my ribs and you can see my hip bones a little. I once got down to 135 and was disgusted because my back was so boney!!! My BF at the time was like GROSS, you need to gain some weight. However I guess he didn't mean 180... LOL. Oh, and some womem like to be very thin, however it's not all that healthy to be very thin when you're female. Females are made to have children, you need certain stores of fat on your body (boobs, butt) that's how were were made and that's why it's so hard for us. God made us with the intent that if there was a famine we would survive it easier then a male to care for the children. However back when that mattered we didn't have cars, internet, TV, and junk food! So what I'm trying to say is... you're tall, you may get to 180 and look and feel fantastic! Once your waist gets below 35 inches, your health can not improve much with more weight loss unless you are short with a small frame. |

Thanks everyone! I read everything and it looks like I have a lot to sort out. Just a few comments though: One of you went as far as telling me I need to take care of myself and wear make up and take a mirror and see if I would 'do' me... Just to reply to that, I want to make it clear that all of the pictures on my profile are taken at the SAME weight (the 30lb) weight gain, there for you can see what a camera can do if you think I am different weights in them. Also, I did highlight my hair, the ones that are blonder are more recent. Second of all I couldnt be active because of a heart condition, however I am an EXTREMELY active person, probably more so then the person who told me to get off of the couch. Oh and I must add, that I do wear make up, however I am also confident with wearing a little amount of make up because too much can look BAD, but that's just my style. oh and FYI, I am 5'8" 180lbs, which is not OBESE according to my BMI, and when I was 150 my BMI was 22.8. Also, my boobs are cantelopes that weight at least 10-20lbs... 36DD. For the rest of you that understood and really got to what I was wondering about... thank you for the advice. I want to get back down to 150lbs, however my weight does not define me, I'm active, young, I eat healthy, and take care of myself. I guess I need to try counseling and if that doesn't work, move on. You only live once and you might as well be happy with yourself, even if you're not a size zero :). Thanks again, I really do have a lot to think about. |

Ok well I just got called into work, so much for working at home. Thanks for the help girls, I appreciate the honesty and the concern. There really are a bunch of great people on this site! |

Jules and Jazzy You guys are right... the sex thing is killing me. When I get hit on at work I seriously consider being with another man. I'm going crazy!!! I know he's not cheating on me (I know where he is all of the time).. however he is older then me, he's 30 and has been married before. I get along with his ex wife and she said the sex stopped after she had her son and after a year she had to move on. |

fireflyeyes You're right, I think we need counseling... because after all I'm still with him because I can't imagine life without him. However I think at this point I can't imagine life without him because he makes me feel so insecure and that I can't do it on my own. I know I could make it on my own in the money department (I make more then he does). However he tells me that no one would love me as much as he does... (but I didn't think love was supposed to hurt so bad). |

undertherainbow Well my mother doesnt have any stretch marks from having 2 kids and my sister has a bunch from 2 kids. It's a toss in the air if you're going to get them and how bad... However I KNOW that I would never let him see me naked if I did get them bad. He's told me time and time again how he thinks they are gross and when he sees a woman at the beach with them he points it out makes a comment. I do have small stretch marks on my hips and boobs from puberty, however they are not noticable anymore. I've kept it a secret from him all of this time, LOL. |

| jules817... thanks for understanding! I agree with you... these 30 lbs are vanity lbs... I still can run 2 miles, hike with my dog, be active... play sports. The first few posts didn't hit the nail because they were talking about addapting a healthier life style... and I do have one and love to be active. I do understand that I am 'overwieght' according to my BMI, and agree that losing these 30 lbs will make me feel better. But there is a difference in 30 lbs and 50+ lbs. I just want to get back into my size 10's (I'm 5'9"). | |||

My husband is a good looking man HOWEVER (big however), I always have dated men that I have the upper hand in. That's just how I am, maybe it's to make myself feel better, I don't know. He's 6'5" 205 lbs, when I met him he was 185 lbs and guess what?!? The extra weight is all in his stomach. Mine happens to be in my boobs and arse. |

Well I want to lose the weight, that's not the issue. I enjoy being healthy and feeling good about myself. HOWEVER... what I said about getting older or having a baby... after a baby you get stretch marks, and when you get old your skin is not as taught and you get wrinkles. It's a fact of life and a beautiful thing, however my husband is repulsed by the thought of it. He's constantly making fun of people that are not perfect, including me. Ok.. so it's not constant, but enough for me to question my relationship. I gained weight because of a heart condition, and surgery. I was on bed rest for almost a year, you'd think he would understand. |

| Thanks girls, it's sort of refreshing to hear two complete different sides. i guess it's something that I need to figure out... I never thought I would be with a man who was so into appearances. My father put my mother through hell for years with that stuff. It usually gets worse instead of better, I have a lot to think about. | |||

| I went cheap on my scale... 5 bucks... nothing special... old fashioned. Guess what? I don't have the same problem... the only problem I have is I have to stand on it the same way each time or the weight can fluctuate... however I figured that out the first night because if I stand to the back I lose 10 lbs... Ha ha (Yes... I go with the heavier weight...). | |||
| Weight Loss | How do I control evening hunger? | Jan 17 2008 16:45 (UTC) |
19 |
Hey, I have the same problem, calories are calories and it doesnt matter when you have them... something that keeps me full and helps me sleep comfortably... is a slice of toasted aunt mills 12 grain bread (110 calories, 6 grams of fiber) and some PB on it. I just calculate it with my daily calories and still lose a bunch of weight. Another idea is make some hot chocolate that you can sip on... that does the trick too. I figured out that if I eat dinner early I get hungry before bed, because I am hungry... I go to sleep LATE... so why not eat??? I just count the calories... don't starve yourself. Oh and to figure out if you're really hungry and not thirsty, drink water first and wait 15 minutes. Allowing yourseld to eat when you are hungry will help you in the long run, so once you lose the weight, you know what to do when you get hungry late at night... it's not that you're eating... it's what you eat and how much. |

| Weight Loss | Don't trust those lying labels! | Jan 05 2008 17:04 (UTC) |

OKAY... I have EVOO and EVOO (PAM) Spray...SOOOOOOOOOOOOO Olive oil: 1 tbsp = 14g of fat and 120 calories (so that means if you sprayed the olive oil you would have to spray an entire tbsp (if you're a cook you know that's a lot) to get 120 calories... Pam EVOO: 1/3 second spray = 0g of fat and 0 calories (this is what the label says). NOW if you look at the Ingredients it reads: EVOO, Lecithin from soybeans, water, propellent. It also says that the EVOO adds a trivial amount of fat. So, if you were to spray an entire TBSP of this spray (basically impossible) and then consume the entire meal yourself, there would be less then 14g of fat and 120 calories becuase it's mixed with water and soy. |

| Weight Loss | Dieting + Exercise = Weight Gain!?? | Jan 04 2008 16:45 (UTC) |

Happy it helped :) I am a bit heavier then you, but I've noticed when I weigh myself everyday I see it fluctuatiing even though I'm sticking with my diet. If you are eating right and exercising there is no way you're going to gain... trust me and goodluck :) Example: On Christmas I weighed 181 (down from 200!), and I stuck there for a while and I figured it was because I allowed myself to eat 1800 calories a day through the holidays, well the scale was reading 174.6 this morning... Rather drastic loss when I was just trying to maintain. It gave me inspiration, that even when I'm maintaining my weight loss I can eat more then 1800 calories if I'm active and eating healthier (the healthier the food the more you can eat!) Goes to show that we Americans eat way more calories then we think we do. |

| Health & Support | lemonade diet??? | Jan 04 2008 15:58 (UTC) |
14 |
| It's true! I watched Super Skinny Me last night on BBC, it's about two journalists that take a challenge to get down to a size 00. One of the women tried the lemonade diet... in the first week she dropped 7 lbs! That's amazing... and she was not overweight to begin with. HOWEVER (and that's a really big however) the woman who did the lemonade diet developed a severe eating disorder, all she could think about was food! Because of that she would binge and then purge and even tried laxatives. I don't think any diet that makes you develop serious health problems that might result in an early death would be a smart choice. | |||
| Weight Loss | Dieting + Exercise = Weight Gain!?? | Jan 04 2008 15:52 (UTC) |

1300 calories might be too little with exercise, you don't have much to lose! Restricting your calories that much might mean when you go off your diet it will all come back (not always though). Try something more gradual like 1500 calories and burn an extra 300 a day so you're still getting 1200 calories. Once you do that don't weigh yourself daily, just once a week in the morning and you'll see a difference. I also think the sodium tip is great too. I watched super skinny me on BBC last night and it was about two journalists that went on crash diets to become a size 00. One of the woman started off with a great trainer that had her on 1500 calories a day and a lot of exercise... she dropped 7 lbs rather fast. After that she did some more restricting diets, she did get to a size 00, however gained most of it back in 2 weeks! I used this example because both of these women did not have weight issues, and if you only need to lose 5-10 lbs then you don't either. |

| 5 and 1/2 ounces is about 5 and 1/2 bites of food... so that's what they consider a serving size. I'm sure like any other chinese place they give you WAY more then that and I'm sure it's loaded with sodium. If you split it with someone and drink a lot of water it can't be that bad. | |||
