| Health & Support | back to "normal"? | Jan 21 2009 01:07 (UTC) |

I see my doctors next week, and I will most definitely be talking to them about this. I'm almost seventeen, and I've been maintaining on about 1750-1950 per day. I run 4.5 miles three times a week and other than that I'm a cheerleader (but our practices are honestly just standing around for two hours). I like the ideas of learning how to properly portion out items; one of my major hurdles right now is evenly spacing meals throughout the day because I tend to backlog around 500-600 for after dinner. It is, again, a control issue. But I'm working on that! Thank you for your prompt reply! |

I absolutely agree!!!! It makes me feel like such a fatty to see these girls who are 5'4", 110 lbs, and want to lose MORE... same goes with the people who have the same stats and eat only 1,200 calories a day. i mean, i'm a recovering anorexic, by no means under- or overweight (5'4", 117 lbs) and i eat 2,000 calories a day. am i just doing something wrong here?? it makes me really confused and pissed off. |

Original Post by miiniiskiirt: Ummm 64 inches is 5'4"--my height. My doctor recommends no lower than 110 for that height. That means you, lolruchi, are perfect at the weight you are at. I'm sixteen and weigh about 112, recovering from an ED so I'm looking to gain weight. I can tell you, at our height, 103 would probably look emaciated and unhealthy depending on your build. you say you're medium build? that means you can stand to stay the same weight--or even gain a few pounds. best of luck!!! |

Haha I'm going there for dinner too :) They post the nutrition facts on the website, fyi. I always get the Singapore Street Noodles (570 for the whole thing, which is a TON of food... if you're going with family, I'm sure someone else wouldn't mind splitting it with you) and/or the Cantonese Shrimp (330) which aren't as big as the Street Noodles but again, the calories aren't that high either. Overall it's a really yummy restaurant and not too bad for you. Have fun! |

I wish to gain the ability to eat whatever my mom makes for dinner-- not have to ask her hours beforehand so that I can figure out exactly how much of each part of dinner I can eat. I wish to be a size 2... up from a 00. I don't want to repeat an experience I had last month (shopping for jeans... I asked the assistant if they had any size 26 (which is like a 2) and she took one look at me and said "I'll find you some 24s (which are 00...) you're waaaay too tiny to fit in a 26.") I wish to gain my curves back and not look the way I did when I was 10 (which is how I look now...) I wish to have my B cup back!! I wish to have my period back... I do want kids someday... I wish to be happy again and not have to worry about all of this... |

luminair-- it's called sports practice. any athlete who works out with a high school or college team will be doing at LEAST 8 hours a week. i'm sure the OP is part of one of those teams that works out a lot. cheerwiz17-- sorry to break it to ya, but everything has carbs. they're not bad, it's just a fact of life. and from experience, it's waaaay better to gain weight by eating a surplus of calories than to use a protein supplement. you probably do need a lot more calories than you are eating just to maintain your weight. best of luck!!! |

My cat LOOOOVES popcorn. like he eats it whenever he gets a chance (which isn't that often, since the only person in my house who likes it is my brother). he'll eat it one piece at a time and we found out that he's very adept at catching it if we throw pieces at him. also he likes cheez-its... kinda odd. |

english muffins with cream cheese. i have a bruegger's by me, so i have light strawberry cream cheese (eliminates the need for jam). the cream cheese gets melty if you put it on it right after toasting the english muffin. baby carrots and hummus (hummus has protein, baby carrots are carbs. plus a good way to get in a serving of veggies) oatmeallll. it's good if you put like a 1/4 cup of vanilla soymilk and some cinnamon, along with sweetener. peanut butter in a pita pocket |

ooh i like to take a tbs of skippy natural (no hydrogenated oils! yay!)--works best with creamy-- and spread it in 1/2 a sara lee pita pocket, then microwave for 30 seconds. it makes the pita a little bit crispy, and the pb melts perfectly. yumyumyum makes me hungry already. only 174 calories |

hello-- i'm your age (16) and i'm recovering from anorexia too. believe me, it's NOT fun. i hate it. but recovery is worth it because every step i make, every morsel of food i put in my mouth, distances me from the shivering stick i used to be. i'm on my way to being healthy. for months all i could think about was food, food, food---when i got to eat next, how much i'd eaten already, how little i should eat at the next meal so that i could get in x amount of calories for the day. i dwindled to 108 lbs (i'm 5'4", but really muscular... competitive gymnast and track runner) and i was cold ALL THE TIME. my hair was falling out, my bones were sticking out. but then, i said to myself, why is this worth it? is this really beautiful, to be this bony, shivering girl? no guy is going to think that's sexy. i would rather be the 124-lb, happy, healthy teenager i was before the anorexia. i keep calorie tabs in my head now, and try to make educated decisions when i go out to dinner. that's not to say that i don't utilize sites like healthydiningfinder.com to find out exactly what i should order when i go out... my parents still think that's weird. recovery is a great thing. it really is. that isn't to say its not hard, because it seems at times like everyone's against you but you (doctors telling you to eat, eat, eat... therapists asking you why you won't eat... etc. etc.) but it's worth it. the best thing you can do for your body is feed it. i eat 1800 calories a day. to gain, i ate up to 2500. but after putting on 10 lbs i'm allowed to maintain (yay!!) i think you should probably be having around 1800 if you're even a little bit active. teens need more calories anyway (which i'm still trying to get my mind around. it's a bit of a struggle with the calories still, every day.) if you're really not sure, then maybe seeing a nutritionist would help you. it was a great benefit to me. overall... i promise, you are stronger than your ed, no matter what. best of luck!! ((hugs)) |

hi everyone, i havent posted here in a really really long time but a change in my life has brought about a new situation and a bit of a relapse into my ED tendencies. i had knee surgery last wednesday, to get my acl repaired (patellar tendon autograft). i really really needed to do the surgery so that i could continue doing gymnastics (well, after a 6-month recovery time). on wednesday i basically couldn't eat. i had maaaybe 400 calories max. on thursday, same thing. friday was worse, because the anesthesia was wearing off and i was completely nauseous and threw up. 200 calories total. saturday and sunday were a little better. i got up to 600 calories. i just haven't been hungry... all i've been doing all day is lying on the couch and either sleeping or watching tv. i eat only when i have to in order to have food in my stomach to take the vicodin painkillers. obviously, this isn't healthy. a week ago i was an active, healthy 16-year-old, working out 4 hrs a day/4 days a week & eating 1800 calories consistently, maintaining 118 lbs. at 5'3.5". now, i've been reduced to a couch potato... i know its just until my knee is healed enough to even walk again (i'm on crutches for three weeks) but i'm going crazy. the ED thoughts are telling me every time i look in the mirror how much i've gained and how my muscle tone is disappearing. one of my teammates told me how her sister got this surgery and her leg muscle atrophied so much that you could tell the difference even 2 years later. my knee is all swollen and i'm afraid that it won't go down, or will look weird for when i go back to school on thursday. gosh, sorry this is so long. i guess i really just needed to vent. i'm trying so hard to beat this ED, and this surgery is not making it any easier. there's a part of me that wants to lapse back into restricting, exercising as much as i can (weights, crunches, etc.) but im stronger than that. i am stronger than my ED. |

Thanks everybody. We scheduled the surgery for March 19th (so soon!!) so for the meantime I'm cutting back on my workout at gym so I don't have any swelling for the surgery. I'm coming to grips with the recovery time and muscle atrophy (hopefully not too much of that because I am a competitive gymnast...) I'll be sure to get an aggressive PT, rusty_thing. Rapid recovery is one thing I really want!!! Again, thank you all! |

hi everybody! its wonderful hearing everybody's success stories... l81jones, i have the same kind of problem with my parents. like last night, my mom and i got in this GIANT fight over macaroni and cheese. she wanted me to eat it, i didn't... mostly because i know it had 400+ calories in a HALF CUP (the recipe called for 4 cups of shredded cheddar.) anyway it ended up in both of us crying because we were super super stubborn and neither would change our minds. i didn't have to eat it... it felt like such a hollow victory, but even when i was healthy i didn't eat like that. i had something i was comfortable with (a sandwich) for dinner instead. this whole week has been HORRIBLE because i feel gigantic and gross (finals week-- means i can't get to gymnastics practice and still manage to study for tests to keep up good grades at the same time, so i only went twice this week instead of 4x). on top of that i'm still trying to up my calories (up to 2000 a day.) unfortunately the ED is telling me "you're not exercising, DONT EAT AS MUCH." plus, i've been using Golden Spoon frozen yogurt as a treat every day. it's not bad for you but since it is dessert i've been feeling like i shouldn't eat it so often... my mind is screwed up and its making every day such a struggle...
anyway sorry for long post. hope everybody's doing well :) |

| Foods | Scrambled vs. Hardboiled | Jan 27 2008 00:24 (UTC) |
|
The reason why the scrambled egg has more calories, and therefore a different "letter grade," is because most people prepare scrambled eggs with milk, and then also put oil in the pan to cook it. Since you just used Pam I don't think it's that big a difference--when I eat scrambled eggs I just log them as "whole, fresh" because that's what they are. So, therefore, the discrepancy is just in the way you prepare them. Hope this helps! |

| i have to agree with muttlover. i was expecting the same thing when i saw my nutritionist, and i was somewhat startled when she put me on a 1900-2100 calorie/day diet because i need to gain about 8-10 lbs. don't worry--the next time you see your nutritionist he or she will probably up your calories again. good luck! | |||

sooo my parents/nutritionist/psychiatrist have all combined and decided i need to gain 2-4 lbs a week for the next 4 weeks. i didn't think i was that underweight (111 lbs 5'4", 16 years old) but i am trying to recover. so now, it's come down to gaining weight, or giving up competitive gymnastics. of course, i'm going to try to gain the weight... but it's just overwhelmingly scary. i was hoping i could take my recovery one step at a time... dealing with the emotional issues regarding calorie counting and restricting, as well as gaining weight slowly. has anyone else had this happen to them? |

It really sounds like you could use some professional help. Only a few weeks ago I was in the same position that you're in, and it really helped me to get to talk to a nutritionist about my daily recommended caloric intake. You could stand to gain about 20 pounds (at least) and trust me (trust what everybody's been saying!) fats are NOT bad. Fats, regardless of how the name sounds, will not make you fat. In fact, you need them to process fat-soluble vitamins, which will otherwise stay unabsorbed in your system. Do yourself a favor and go see a nutritionist or someone else who has first-hand experience about helping teens with eating disorders. I know it's scary, upping calories and gaining weight. I'm in the same conundrum. Remember that the people here can help you, though, if you ever need to vent. Best of luck! |

| Oh my gosh I'm the exact same way!!!!Eating is like, one of my favorite things, but I've become obsessive about how many calories are in everything I eat, which stops me from eating what I really want to be eating.I thought I was in the minority with this... well, my eating disorder isn't really anorexia though, it's more EDNOS because I think that it stems mostly from OCD.And I'm the same too about the quantity of foods... I think, why eat that english muffin with peanut butter if I can have an apple, yogurt, and a handful of pretzels?I wish I could just remove all the ED thoughts... can't stop thinking about food. | |||

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
