The Lounge what is your type? May 12 2009

Essential: intelligence, kindness, sensitivity, humour, sense of purpose in life, attractive (to me) looks, emotional stability, trustworthiness, self-respect

Would prefer: sociable, good taste, common interests, arty, literary or musical, liberal views, blue/green eyes,  tall, healthy weight, own teeth and hair, financially independent (not rich just can help pay the bills), vegetarian and animal lover, creative

Not so keen on: facial hair, shaved head, smoking, obsession with appearance, commitment phobia, super conventional attitudes, narrow experience of life, religion

Can't deal with: fanatical religious or extreme political beliefs, arrogance, unreliability (and the obvious stuff like being a serial killer, etc)

Vegetarian Why the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle? Apr 29 2009
15:38 (UTC)

1) I love my pets and animals in general, so I don't feel comfortable using animals as a source of food when I don't have to

2) As others have stated, the way that some farm animals are treated is horrific

3) I've always been a bit squeamish about meat - hated the gristly bits and the texture and appearance of raw meat, and never liked eating chicken or turkey

4) I love veggie food!

I'm sure there are probably health benefits to being vegetarian, but it's never been my motivation - as far as I'm concerned a veggie diet can still include plenty of sweets, junk food and alcohol, so it's certainly not a guarantee of weight loss or good health in itself.

The Lounge What didn't your parents do for you? Apr 29 2009

I think it's possible to examine your childhood critically without feeling that you're blaming your parents for everything or failing to take responsibility for your problems. My parents were wonderful, loving people who, like everyone else, made a few mistakes. Those mistakes have helped shape who I am today, just as all the caring things they did have too. I don't think I'm being "ungrateful" by talking through these things with a therapist - that's too simplistic. For me, understanding my past is an essential part of changing my future.

My parents gave me everything they could, and I'm grateful for that, though I wish they had built up my confidence more as a child by trusting me to do things on my own and encouraging me to stand up for myself.

It's a nice idea and a great excuse for all the boozers out there. Smile  However, speaking as someone that used to have a glass or two (or three) of wine at home regularly I can tell you that cutting it right back to a glass or two a week really helped me to lose weight.  It's not just the calories or the effect or the metabolism... it's the loss of willpower and accompanying munchies that make things worse than they could be.  I'm sure others will confirm that.

absolutely....after the second drink it's harder to care, and after another one I can't focus long enough to count calories anyway. Laughing

Weight Loss do you think the size of your friends influences your weight? Mar 17 2009

definitely.... my larger friends can make me feel good when they call me 'a stick' (I am so not a stick, but it's all relative!)  On the other hand, I feel much bigger when I'm with my skinny sister and sister-in-law....

What about going to a lap dancing or strip club, is that cheating?  I don't personally think so, but I know people who would consider themselves cheated on if their partner did this.

Health & Support Alcohol poisoning.... Mar 16 2009

I can totally relate, as the same thing happened to me on Saturday! Like you, I'm not a regular binge drinker and have recently stopped drinking altogether to lose weight. But that night I went to a party, was craving a glass of wine, and just got totally carried away. I also hadn't eaten much and done a hard workout, so the alcohol went straight to my head.  I woke up with no memory of what happened, but was apparently sick in my friend's garden, smoked a cigarette (yuck!) and did something else that's too embarrassing to share here. Embarassed I felt so ashamed because I'm in my 30s and haven't been that drunk for at least 10 years!

Anyway, it sounds to me like you're doing all the right things, getting plenty of water, eating healthily, etc, and as lala says, if it was just a one-off, it probably hasn't done too much harm. I'm sure the bad feelings will wear off in time and you can put it behind you.  As for giving up alcohol, one of my friends did this because alcohol was making her feel aggressive and out of control. She feels much better now she is teetotal. Though personally I'm going to try drinking moderate amounts on a regular basis, instead of depriving myself until I'm driven to binge drink.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do :)

Vegetarian I have a confession to make... Mar 13 2009

I get cravings too, and what works for me is telling myself that I can have it if I want to. Once I feel like it's not a 'forbidden food,' the craving usually disappears.

Weight Loss Stuff About Weight Loss That Bugs Me Mar 10 2009

ha. I have a friend who specialises in backhanded compliments. She can't just say 'that's a nice dress you've got on' and leave it at that, but always has to add 'much better than the stuff you usually wear,' etc.  She also makes constant observations about what I eat. I used to find it annoying but now I just think it's funny because it's so predictable!  I'm looking forward to what she says on my wedding day. :)

Weight Loss When you reach your goal weight which actor/actress do you think you would look like, or which one would you want to look like? Mar 04 2009

I don't have the right genes or bone structure to be skinny, so I'd say Kate Winslet or perhaps Scarlett Johansson (my fiance's favourite actress!)

Weight Loss Metabolic Types...Are you eating what you should? Feb 25 2009

hmm, I'm a seriously fast oxidiser, which means I should be eating a lot of red meat - but I'm vegetarian! I wonder if that's why I get tired and hungry a lot, and crave high-protein foods?

I agree with everyone who said avocados... eating them regularly makes my hair really shiny! If you're worried about the calories in a large avocado, get some baby ones. I think they're about 150 each.

Weight Loss Anyone else trying to lose weight for a wedding? Feb 19 2009
14:05 (UTC)

my wedding day is April 4th!

This morning I was 140.8 lbs, my goal is 137-138 by the wedding (I'm 5'7).  So not too far to go, but I'm worried the stress over the next month will make it hard to stick to my healthy/alcohol-free diet....

I wouldn't go there out of choice because it's not ideal for vegetarians (I'm in the UK) but if I was part of a group eating out, I wouldn't object on principle. I occasionally go to Burger King for a veggie burger.

Weight Loss Being harrassed in public b/c of weight--a question Feb 19 2009
10:41 (UTC)

I think commenting on a woman's weight is a cheap, unimaginative way to insult her, since the majority of us are sensitive about the issue. You don't even have to be overweight to experience it. I've been called a "f***ing fat cow" several times, in nightclubs and on the street (I live in the UK), and I'm a size 6-8. One time I think it was because I turned the guy's friend down! It's horrible to be called that, so I really sympathise. Though as someone else said, it helps to think what complete losers they must be!

Health & Support Closet Eating Disorder? Feb 18 2009

For example, I was once at my ex-boyfriend's parents house, and as I finished dinner, his mum said 'well, I can see you have a healthy appetite.' I could have died. The message I heard was 'no wonder you're overweight, look how much you eat.' Which is ridiculous really because a) she was too nice to mean it like that, and b) I'm not even overweight - just not skinny!

I know I can be very irrational somtimes. :D

I've always done this too!

I get very anxious about people making comments or drawing attention to what/how much I'm eating. Even if it's just a joke, I still find it embarrassing for some reason.
