Thank you for the advice.  I just found a website called freedieting (dot) com, they have tools to figure out how much you burn taking into consideration your body fat percentage and activity level.  It said my maintenance is 2071, so if I run a 500 calorie deficit I should average 1500 calories, right?  They also give 7 day calorie cycling plans based on your stats.  Thanks again for the feedback!

I am 31 years old, 5' 5.5" and I weigh 160.  I am using the light activity calculation to figure out my deficit.  Clearly I am confused about how much I should be taking in.  Do you think I am not  eating enough?  I know I am burning more calories since I started exercising, but it seems scary to increase my intake so much.  How fast does the metabolism speed up when you begin to exercise regularly and build muscle?  Thanks for the replys!

I agree, and you are young, so you burn more calories than some of us just being.  How many days per week do you go to the gym? Is it super regular?  If so, you may be moderately active.

Based on your info above, and moderate activity level, you burn about 2200 cal per day.  If you log your activity level as moderate (which is accurate based on your info), you don't need to log your activity to keep track of your total burn because the site is already assuming that you're that active.  If you are setting your activity level at sedentary, then do log your activity to track your total burn.  Based on a 2200 calorie estimated burn, a 500 calorie deficit (one pound per week) would be 1700 calories per day.  Two pounds (1000 cal deficit) would be 1200/day.  I don't know if that helps.  If I were you, I would eat 1450-1650 per day, but high protien and low refined carbs.  Lots of veggies, whole grains, fruits and lean meat.

Thanks for posting this.  I get migranes too.  Stress is huge trigger for me.  So are wheat, dairy, and tomato sauce (so, pizza and pasta with red sauce are tough for me).  Chemical based odors including perfume and things like varnish, etc do it to me too.  Strange,  I had never considered some of the other things you mentioned.  I still get them sometimes.  I didn't have any for a few years due to a  series of craniosacral bodywork sessions and stress and dietary management.

Low fat, high protien diet and exercise!  Honestly- there is no magic secret recipe.  It will take some time, but it will totally be worth it.  Melkor will probably hook you up with specifics.

You can do it!

I agree that you should have it tested.  It is not terribly expensive, and your insurance should cover it, especially if you have symptoms of low function.

I don't usually feel hunger pains.  I eat a small something every 3 hours (average) and I eat mostly low calorie high fiber foods.  I think this keeps me feeling full and because the foods are low cal, I can eat a lot more than I would be able to if they were higher in calories.  You may be eating too few calories if you are young.  Teenage girls need 2800-3200 (average from my medical textbooks) calories a day, this website is great, but they haven't developed guidelines for teens.  Their guidelines are for adults, and adults need fewer calories than teens. Good luck.

I think abortion is fine until the thing is actually a person. Thats where people have the major breakdown in understanding... they see the fetus and think "oh, its gonna be a human! so ...i guess its one now!". But they are not understanding or thinking about what actually makes us human (beyond the genes).

What makes a person a person (beyond just a mass of bone and flesh)?

The key difference is the ability to think and be aware. Its sentience that gives us more percieved importance then a cow (even though our bodies are made out of much the same material). The mind is the key issue, a fetus that has not developed a mind is NOT a PERSON (simply a mass of flesh and bone).

But then comes the arguments of "potential human" .... but thats just a breakdown in understanding of time. Without getting too complicated....lets just say you cant lose what you never had....

Every time you have a period you allowed a potential human to die....you could have turned that into a person.... but you didnt...you simply let it die. Same argument, its simply overlooked because people dont care to think about it. Again, cant lose what you never had...."potential" is not the same as what already exists.

This is a slippery slope.  Are you saying that children with severe developmental disorders or those in coma are not human because they aren't cognitively aware to this (the above) extent?  How do you draw that line without moving it around in different circumstances?

I think that regardless of the stance one chooses on this issue, it needs to be generalizable and consistent- if not, it is not valid.  I am not saying that I am pro or anti in this issue, I am not trying to change anyone's mind; and I think that too often people have a purely emotionally based response that is not consistent with some of their other views (as Giggle Puppy was pointing out).

I would not recommend Splenda. You can google it and find all the bad info. on it, so I won't get into it here.

I use Stevia. It's from a plant so it's natural/healthy. I like the Sweet Leaf brand, liquid Stevia. But they do sell it in powder form.

Stevia is horrible for you. Don't use it! It is a mutagen! It causes your internal organs to mutate!! Mostly your liver!

Okay...seriously....

I use Splenda. I love it. I don't have sweet cravings. I lose weight. And I can't have sugar or I do gain weight (insulin resistance). If you don't have problems with it, then don't worry. Some people overreact. If they only knew what was in all of their foods they would never eat.

OMG. Animals crap on vegetables in fields! Don't eat veggies! OMG, bugs crawl on grains when they are in fields! Don't eat grains! Eww! Ewww! Fruits get bugs in them!!! AAAHHH! No more fruits!!!

Seriously.

Are you serious about Stevia? Do you have links you can provide with that info?  Thanks.

I had one once.  It did not taste good and it made my stomach hurt.  I am in the "I would rather eat fresher foods" camp.  Though, if I was unable for some reason to get lunch and one happened to be offered to me, I would do that rather than go without.

Fresh, whole foods are better for you.  And imo they taste better too.  A bit more work though :)

It looks good.  I think you could go with whole milk if you are trying to gain weight.  Even make it chocolate milk (if that doesn't make it scary).  Good job getting good calories in.

One good one that I just thought of is half a bagel (or a whole one) toasted with 1 oz. cream cheese, half (or whole) avocado, tomato slices, Mrs. Dash, and sprouts.

Best of luck!

A BMI of 24 is not overweight.

Anywhere between 18 and 25 is considered healthy.

Ah. I was misled by the BMI tool on CC. It said that 24 is considered "slightly overweight"...

Some sources even say 18-26 is healthy. I think it depends how old you are. Younger may correlate with lower numbers. I know at 30, I am "normal" in terms of BMI at 25. If you are getting enough calories and nutrients, you know you are not anorexic. Sorry for that frustration in your life.

Good on ya!  That is awesome!

I got into an overeating spiral.  I would do alright during the day, but at night it was like I had no will power and the part of my brain that monitors and stops would just check out.  I would consume way more than double the calories I had eaten during the rest of the day at night.  Usually sweets too.  I have tried to purge before and I can't do it.  I am thankful for that now.

The first time I said no, I felt so powerful.  Every time you stop that behavior, you get stronger and more able to stop it again.  It become an upward spiral.  And it builds feelings of confidence (at least for me).

So, good job!

Pregnancy & Parenting What has your pregnancy weight gain/loss been like? (During and After pregnancy) Feb 02 2008

I weighed 125-130 when I became pregnant with my first.  I gained 40 pounds with her.  After she was born, I lost all but 10 pounds of it very quickly (a few weeks).  If you are planning on breast feeding, you will lose most of the weight quickly, and breast feeing has well documented benefits for baby and mom.  It is the perfect infant food.  With my son, I gained 50 pounds, and lost 40 within a few months.  I didn't have any problems with keeping on that baby weight.  I started school (at a healthy weight) when my youngest was 2, and put on 15 pounds due to the sedentary demands of being a college student.  So, school has been tough on my weight, but being a mom hasn't.

Congrats!  Remember that your nutrition is more important than the amount of weight you gain (meaning- dont worry too much if you gain 20).  You are seeing a doctor or midwife, correct?

Your BMR is the number of calories you would burn if you literally laid in your bed all day and night.  It is the number of calories you need to complete your vital functions such as heart beating, digestion, breathing, cellular metabolism, etc.

The number of calories you actually burn is much much higher.  I am betting that you will lose quickly at 1500.

I think that comparing Bikram (or any other vigorous vinyasa yoga) to pilates in terms of caloric burn is totally inaccurate.  Vinyasa is a fast paced, challenging practice.  According to Bikram Yoga of Winston, and Self Magazine:

"How many calories does one yoga class burn?*Based on the calculator on Self Magazine, we burn between 550-1000 calories per class. The amount of calories burned depends on many factors--your gender, size, weight, body type, and present condition. There are devices available that can help you determine how many calories you burn in an exercise session."

So, for someone who is in good condition, an estimate on the low side of that range would probably be in the ballpark.
