Vegetarian Been a veggie for 2 weeks and have not lost an ounce..... May 01 2008

The poster who listed vegan protein sources and their calorie counts didn't mention these (I got the nutritional info from calorie count):

1 serving of seitan: 90 calories and 18g of protein

1 serving of tofu: 62 calories and 6.5g of protein

1 cup of tempeh (a very large serving): 320 calories and 30.8g of protein

And you can get protein from whole grains, as you already know. I eat a lot of quinoa with beans. I also like lentil soups.

You can definitely have a very healthy diet as a vegan.

Vegetarian Just a random question about raw foodies... Apr 29 2008

This will sound gross but it's totally true:

I was writing a short article about raw foodists and interviewed a guy at the Farmer's Market who ate raw for a few years. He said that he ate no meat and was a vegan for most of that time, but he lost a lot of weight and had circles under his eyes (I know this isn't typical of every raw foodist). A survivalist type convinced him to start eating roadkill. The man I interviewed said eating freshly killed, raw groundhogs, etc, really helped his health!

Other people I interviewed were basically vegan and some said they would eat a piece of raw fish now and then, but it didn't seem that common. A couple I interviewed liked to put grains and seeds and such in a dehydrator to make crackers. They shared some spaghetti squash with me with raw marinara.

That was a few years ago, and that's pretty much all I remember.

I eat a similar diet to yours. I can maintain my weight by eating your menu. If I want to lose a couple pounds, I'll eat a huge salad with lots of veggies for either lunch or dinner. I snack on carrots or other veggies and fruit. They're usually low calorie so you can eat a lot of them!

A small portion of nuts is fine, sometimes. Are you eating raw nuts or roasted/ salted?

But really, eating a lot more vegetables helps me lose weight. You might want to check out Eat to Live.

Looks vegan!

You may want to look over this list:

Cooking whole foods yourself as opposed to eating processed food ensures that you know what you're eating. (Not that you should give up a staple like bread.)

I was a vegetarian when I was a kid (I'm a vegan now as an adult). Young teens can be cruel. Just be as calm and low key as possible and say you don't like eating meat or you don't like the way it tastes. You don't like eating dead animals. Definitely don't try to convert them and don't get on their case.

When they badger you, just ask them why they care so much what you eat. It's your life and your stomach. What are they, the food police?

Another poster was right when they said that the teasing will subside as you get older and you won't care as much what people think. It's good to have solid arguments for when someone really questions you, but I think short and simple answers are best to deflect negative attention.

It's your personal decision to be a vegetarian. Anyone who harasses you is immature or ignorant. Don't react to them and you'll less likely be a target. They'll get bored and move on.

TVP, oatmeal, trail mix (obviously), vegan jerky, apples. Boy I haven't been backpacking in a while. I think it's great you're going while four months pregnant. The exercise should be good for you.

That looks like a good plan from floggingsully.

I saw good results when I took a Pilates class in addition to taking a body sculpting class and cardio kickboxing. I like classes because sometimes I slack off when I work out by myself!

I've been told by trainers that you'll never see your ab muscles (especially as a woman) until you've burned off the fat that's on top of it. One exercise they recommend to strengthen your core muscles is the plank. Hold it for at least a minute or longer at a time.  http://exercise.about.com/od/abs/ss/abexercis es_10.htm

And gross! Those poor potatoes!

Also, where I work we use vegan boca burgers for the veggie burger, BUT the cook smears mayonnaise on it before putting it on the grill! Except when I order it I ask him to use oil, which he does.

Regarding the salsa, it doesn't need to be made with sugar. Try a different brand or make your own. It's really easy. I use fresh tomatoes, red onions, jalepenos, a little garlic, lots of cilantro, lime juice, and a little black pepper. You could also add bell peppers or any kind of peppers for that matter. Or anything else you like.

I've never been to Ireland, but I hear it's a meat and potatoes kind of place.

Hi, I've been a vegan for a year now, and I also still wear leather and wool that I bought before for the same reasons as the other posters. I haven't been as diligent about my cosmetics and bath products, but I'm trying!

I found this short video about using "safe" organic products:

http://www.howdini.com/H_view_video.php?viewk ey=2935306

They recommend this website to rate your products on how natural and safe they are to use: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/

They aren't rating products by whether or not they are vegan, just on how toxic they are.

Oops! I meant to say 3,500 calories a week.

I wish you luck! Keep me posted on how it goes. What kind of workouts are you doing? I've been kind of slack over the winter but I'm trying to go to the gym more regularly again. I like to take cardio kickboxing and pilates. I also ride my bike a lot during the warmer months and get really fit doing that.

What kind of acting do you do?

What is your goal? That math seems weird. I know the basic formula for healthy weight loss is to create a deficit of 3,500 calories a week or 500 a day. So you need to consume less calories and burn more calories to do that. Like, cut out a 200 calorie latte and burn 300 calories by working out. Fill out your plate with a lot of low calorie vegetables to keep you full. Soups are very filling and low calorie usually. Eat healthy foods and don't let yourself get too hungry. Does that help at all?

Follow your Heart vegan cheese is supposed to be the best, but I got some to put on pizza and wasn't too thrilled. It was the mozzarella one and didn't have much flavor. I could have just done without. There are some good recipes out there for cheesy sauces made with nutritional yeast. And if the tofu makes a good ricotta sub then you probably don't need extra "cheese."

I'm in love with soba noodles right now. I cup is about 113 calories. Stir fry some vegetables and tofu with some garlic and ginger and some peppers or whatever you like to go on top. Throw a little Braggs liquid aminos for a soy sauce taste.

I also eat quiona and beans frequently with salad or green vegetables on the side.

I also like tempeh bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado or veganaise in whole wheat or spelt pita. Very low cal. You might even need to add a piece of fruit or a salad to make it up to 500 cals.

I love to snack on edamame, too.

Are you snacking out of boredom or because you're hungry? Are you getting enough water? Would a hot herbal tea (no calories) help your cravings?

I love to snack but I have less cravings if I have good nutritious meals that keep me satisfied and if I drink enough water and get enough sleep.

Becoming a vegetarian won't automatically mean you'll lose weight. There are plenty of vegs who live off junk food. But if you put vegetables and fruits at the bottom of your food pyramid (meaning they're the focus of your diet) and then eat whole grains, beans and other vegetarian proteins, nuts, and seeds and limit sugar and saturated fat, then I think you will see healthy weight loss. Most vegetables and fruits are low calorie and provide a lot of nutrition and can be very filling. They also contain a lot of fiber and water which means you'll move food through your system pretty quickly.

You don't even have to eat less, just eat lower calorie foods. Have a cookie once in a while if you really want it, but you'll notice your taste buds and cravings will change after a while.

Yeah, I don't think that amount of coffee is going to really harm you, gamey. Smile

I was just diagnosed with a medical condition and I have to avoid caffeine for a little while to clear it up, so it was nice to have additional reasons to avoid it.

I think I'm going to buy a juicer!

OMG I love chocolate yerba mate by Guayaki! I haven't had coffee in a few days now and this is totally a yummy replacement. I also drink ginger or peppermint tea or hot water with lemon to give me healthy energy without the caffeine. I'm used to drinking two cups of coffee a day, but I just finished reading Skinny Bitch and I'm reading Healing with Whole Foods by Paul Pitchford and they both talk about how coffee makes the body too acidic. Cancer and other degenerative diseases live in an acidic environment. I might have  a cup of coffee occasionally in the future, but I need to break the habit of having it every day.

I'm also going to try to take Skinny Bitch's advice to eat fruit in the morning before eating anything else.

How closely are you guys following their advice?

To be honest, the number one reason I'm vegan is because I get grossed out thinking about eating a dead animal, or milk that has blood and pus in it. Or if I think about eating eggs, I think of the piles of male chicks that are thrown aside and left for dead.

Other than that, I totally get that it's a good idea to be veg because of the environment, animal welfare, and health. I'm reading Skinny Bitch right now and the descriptions of animal torture are horrifying and stomach turning.

There are many different substitutions you can use for milk and eggs when baking. A wonderful cookbook for vegan treats is Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World by Isa Maskowitz. http://vegancupcakes.wordpress.com/ She runs the Post Punk Kitchen site which has many great recipes. http://www.theppk.com/. I tried the cornbread recipe and it was awesome.

I read somewhere that chickens whose eggs are labeled "free range, cage free" only have to leave their cages for five minutes a day to be considered as such. They're not necessarily happy chickens. I forget where I read that, so if someone has a source to verify it or dispute it, that'd be welcome.

Getting them from a small farm seems like a better choice.
